Recognizing a polyhedron by network constraint analysis

  • The present paper describes a method of recognizing a polyhedron employing the notion of network constraint analysis. Typical difficulties in three-dimensional object recognition, other than shading, reflection, and hidden line problems, include the case where appearances of an object vary according to observation points and the case where an object to be recognized is occluded by other objects placed in its front, resulting in incomplete information on the object shape. These difficulties can, however, be solved to a large extent, by taking account of certain local constraints defined on a polyhedral shape. The present paper assumes a model-based vision employing an appearance-oriented model of a polyhedron which is provided by placing it at the origin of a large sphere and observing it from various positions on the surface of the sphere. The model is actually represented by the sets of adjacent faces pairs of the polyhedron observed from those positions. Since the shape of a projected face gives constraint to that of its adjacent face, this results in a local constraint relation between these faces. Each projected face of an unknown polyhedron on an acquired image is examined its match with those faces in the model, producing network constraint relations between faces in the image and faces in the model. Taking adjacency of faces into consideration, these network constraint relations are analyzed. And if the analysis finally provides a solution telling existence of one to one match of the faces between the unknown polyhedron and the model, the unknown polyhedron is understood to be one of those memorized models placed in a certain posture. In the performed experiment, a polyhedron was observed from 320 regularly arranged points on a sphere to provide its appearance model and a polyhedron with arbitrarily postured, occluded, or imposed another difficulty was successfully recognized.

A case of malignant dysgerminoma in a slaughtered dairy cow (도축 젖소에서 발생한 악성 난소생식세포종 증례보고)

  • An abnormally enlarged right ovary and a mass in fat surrounding the right kidney were discovered in a dairy cow during routine postmortem examination at slaughter. The ovary was dark reddish and multinodular in shape. Numerous cystic structures were identified in the mass. Histopathologically, the ovary was completely replaced with large, uniform, polyhedral neoplastic cells containing vesicular nuclei and prominent nucleoli. The mitotic index was high. In the lymphatic vessels, tumor emboli were observed. Another mass in the fat surranding the right kidney had the same histological features as the ovarian mass. This animal was diagnosed with malignant dysgerminoma and metastasis to other peritoneal organs.

A STUDY ON IN VIVO AND IN VITRO AMALGAM CORROSION (아말감의 구강내 부식 및 인공 부식에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the in vitro and in vivo corrosion products of low and high copper amalgams. The four different types of amalgam alloy used in this study were Fine cut, Caulk spherical, Dispersalloy, and Tytin. After each amalgam alloy and Hg were triturated according to the directions of the manufacturer by means of the mechanical amalgamator(Amalgam mixer. Shinhung Co. Korea), the triturated mass was inserted into a cylindrical metal mold which was 12mm in diameter and 10mm in height. The mass was condensed by 150Kg/cm compressive force. The specimen was removed from the mold and aged at room temperature for about seven days. The standard surface preparation was routinely carried out by emery paper polishing under running water. In vitro amalgam specimens were potentiostatically polarized ten times in a normal saline solution at $37^{\circ}C$(potentiostat : HA-301. Hukuto Denko Corp. Japan). Each specimen was subjected to anodic polarization scan within the potential range -1700mV to+400mV(SCE). After corrosion tests, anodic polarization curves and corrosion potentials were obtained. The amount of component elements dissolved from amalgams into solution was measured three times by ICP AES(Inductive Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry: Plasma 40. Perkim Elmer Co. U.S.A.). The four different types of amalgam were filled in occlusal and buccal class I cavities of four human 3rd molars. After about five years the restorations were carefully removed after tooth extraction to preserve the structural details including the deteriorated margins. The occlusal surface, amalgam-tooth interface and the fractured surface of in vivo amalgam corrosion products were analyzed. In vivo and in vitro amalgam specimens were examined and analyzed metallographically by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope: JSM 840. Jeol Co. Japan) and EDAX(Energy Dispersive Micro X-ray Analyser: JSM 840. Jeol Co. Japan). 1. The following results are obtained from in vitro corrosion tests. 1) Corrosion potentials of all amalgams became more noble after ten times passing through the in vitro corrosion test compared to first time. 2) After times through the test, released Cu concentration in saline solution was almost equal but highest in Fine cut. Ag and Hg ion concentration was highest in Caulk spherical and Sn was highest in Dispersalloy. 3) Analyses of surface corrosion products in vitro reveal the following results. a)The corroded surface of Caulk spherical has Na-Sn-Cl containing clusters of $5{\mu}m$ needle-like crystals and oval shapes of Sn-Cl phase, polyhedral Sn oxide phase. b)In Fine cut, there appeared to be a large Sn containing phase, surrounded by many Cu-Sn phases of $1{\mu}m$ granular shapes. c)Dispersalloy was covered by a thick reticular layer which contained Zn-Cl phase. d)In Tytin, a very thin, corroded layer had formed with irregularly growing Sn-Cl phases that looked like a stack of plates. 2. The following results are obtained by an analysis of in vivo amalgam corrosion products. 1) Occlusal surfaces of all amalgams were covered by thick amorphous layers containing Ca-P elements which were abraded by occlusal force. 2) In tooth-amalgam interface, Ca-P containing products were examined in all amalgams but were most clearly seen in low copper amalgams. 3) Sn oxide appeared as a polyhedral shape in internal space in Caulk spherical and Fine cut. 4) Apical pyramidal shaped Sn oxide and curved plate-like Sn-Cl phases resulted in Dispersalloy. 5) In Tytin, Sn oxide and Sn hydroxide were not seen but polyhedral Ag-Hg phase crystal appeared in internal space which assumed a ${\beta}_l$ phase.

  • ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was synthesized by solvothermal synthesis using ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ seed, precursor of fine boehmite (Al(OOH)) or gibbsite ($Al(OH)_3$), and 1, 4-butanediol solvent. The seed content and precursor type were selected as variables in order to synthesize ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$. The formation time of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was reduced and the size of the particles was decreased with addition of the seed. When the seed content was increased, the size of the synthesized ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was reduced. Morphologies of the as-synthesized ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ with ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ seed were polyhedron-shaped, while the shape was plate-like or polyhedral without the seed, depending on the additives or the average particle size of the boehmite precursor. The aggregation of as-synthesized ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ from boehmite was smaller than that from gibbsite. As-synthesized ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, with 140 nm size, was obtained by using the seed and boehmite precursor.

Spontaneously Occurring Chemodectoma in a Yorkshire Terrier Dog

  • A 7-year-old, intact female Yorkshire terrier dog was presented for coughing, anorexia, chest pain and dyspnea. Right lateral thoracic radiograph demonstrated a large mass shape on the heart base with decreased cardiac silhouette and severe right deviation of the trachea with the heart shifted to the left thoracic wall was observed on the ventrodorsal thoracic projection. Echocardiographic examination revealed a large rounded mass compressing left atrium around the heart base without signs of pericardial effusion. On computed tomographic (CT) findings, sagittal CT images depicted the possibility of cranial vena caval invasion and heart base involvement of the mass associated with biatrial compression. Dorsal CT image revealed the right deviation of trachea due to the heart base mass and markedly shrunk lung space was detected on the transverse CT image. Because the dog suddenly had died during the recovery from anesthesia after finishing CT scan, necropsy was performed. On gross findings, a large and lobulated mass was located at the base of the heart. A poorly-demarcated, infiltrative, multilobulated tumor composed of polyhedral cells in solid cellular sheets was confirmed based on histopathologic examination. This dog was diagnosed as a chemodectoma. This case report describes the clinical findings, diagnostic consistency of thoracic radiography, echocardiography and CT, and histopathologic confirmation in a spontaneously occurring chemodectoma with a Yorkshire terrier dog.

  • Nuclear polyhedrosis virus was successfully infected the continuous Sf cell line. At 12hrs post-infectio(P.I), the cell lost the motility and the nuclei of the cells were hypertrophied. At 24hrs P.I, the cells were somewhat abnormal form and PIB formation was observed. At 48hrs, the PIBs formed in all cells. PIBs in the nuclei were released in the culture media at 72hrs P.I. By the observation of NPV morphogenesis by electron microscopy at 13hrs P. I, the virogenic stroma formed in the nucleus, and nucleocapsids formed. At 48hrs P.I, many nucleocapsids were bundled and then occluded in PIB, and PIBs were matured. PIB shapes were mostly tetragonal and a polyhedron was about $3{\sim}10{\mu}m$ in size. Virions were rod shape. nucleocapsids ranging in size $30{\sim}40{\times}300{\sim}400nm$.

A Cytoplasmic Polyhedrosis Virus Isolated from the Oriental Tobacco Budworm, Heliothis assulta Guenee (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (담배나방 세포질다각체병 바이러스의 동정 및 병원성에 관한 연구)

  • A cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus isolated from the oriental tobacco budworm, Heliothis assulta (HaCPV), was studied on morphology of the polyhedron and virus particles, analysis of viral protein and nucleic acid, and bioassay of the HaCPV to determine the feasibility of application as a microbial control agent. The shape of polyhedron was hexagonal ranging 0.5-3.7 ${\mu}m$ and the virus particles were icosahedral outline measured 55 nm in diameter. Polyhedral protein was composed of a major polypetide of 24.3 Kd and 5 minor components and virus particle had seven polypeptides ranging in 28.0 Kd-133. 6 Kd by the SDS-P AGE. The genome of virus was segmented with 10 double stranded RNA in the total mol. wt. of 18.08 Md ranging in 0.65 Md -2.79 Md. The $LC_{50}$ values of the HaCPV to the 3rd instar of H. assulta larvae were calculated to $2.895{\times}10^5PIBs/ml$. The $LT_{50}$ values in the concentration of $5.0{\times}10^{6}PIBs/ml$ was 16.4 days.

Effects of Pre-synthesized $BaTiO_3$ Addition on the Microstructure and Dielectric/ Piezoelectric Properties of $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_{0.94}Ba_{0.06}TiO_3$ Piezoelectric Ceramics

  • Due to the environmental issue vast research is going on to replace the widely used lead contented piezoelectric materials. Bismuth sodium titanate (abbreviated as BNT) based bismuth sodium titanate-barium titanate (abbreviated as BNBT) ceramic was prepared by using modified method rather than conventional mixed oxide method. This modification was made to improve the properties of BNT based ceramic. In this procedure $BaTiO_3$ (abbreviated as BT) was prepared using conventional mixed oxide method. Analytical grade raw materials of $BaCO_3$ and $TiO_2$ were weighted and ball milled using ethanol medium. The mixed slurry was dried and sieved under 80 mesh. Then the powder was calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. This calcined BT powder was used in the preparation of BNBT. Stoichiometric amount of $Bi_2O_3$, $Na_2CO_3$, $TiO_2$ and BT were weighted and mixed by using ball mill. The used calcination temperature was $850^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Calcined powder was taken for another milling step. BNBT disks were pressed to 15 mm of diameter and then cold isostatical press (CIP) was used. Pressed samples were sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The SEM microstructure analysis revealed that the grain shape of the sintered ceramic was polyhedral and grain boundary was well matched where as the sample prepared by conventional method showed irregular arrangement and grain boundary not well matched. And sintered density was better (5.78 g/cc) for the modified method. It was strongly observed that the properties of BNBT ceramic near MPB composition was found to be improved by the modified method compare to the conventional mixed oxide method. The piezoelectric constant dB of 177.33 pC/N, electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$ of 33.4%, dielectric constant $K_{33}^T$ of 688.237 and mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ of 109.37 was found.

  • Pd-POSS nanoparticles were produced from the reaction of palladium (II) acetate and octa(3-aminopropyl)octasilsesquioxane octahydrochloride (POSS-${NH_3}^+$) in methanol at room temperature. Pd-POSS nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 60-80 nm were the highly ordered spherical aggregates. In contrast, Pd nanoparticles with a size of 4.0 nm were obtained when POSS-${NH_3}^+$ was not introduced. Pd-POSS/PAA nanocomposites of Pd-POSS nanoparticles and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were fabricated by utilizing ionic interactions between positively charged Pd-POSS nanoparticles and negatively charged carboxylate groups of PAA. PAA was used as a cross-linker for the preparation of hybrid nanocomposites with the controlled organized structures of Pd-POSS nanoparticles. That is, the self-organization of Pd-POSS nanoparticles was formed into the shape of continuous lines by using PAA as a cross-linker. The composition, structure, surface morphology, and thermal stability of the Pd-POSS/PAA nanocomposites were studied by FE-SEM, AFM, TEM, FT-IR, and TGA.
