  • The root of Rumex crispus(Polygonaceae) has been used as one of many oriental medicines ofr the treatment of cathartics, juandice and skin diseases etc. Recently, it is reported as one of anticancer agents and a remedy of acute hepatitis in many traditional medicines. Also, the seed of this plant has been used as a folk medicine for the treatment of digestion problems, liver diseases and many sorts of tumors. In this study we have collected the seed of this plant in rural area and investigated the efficacy of hepatoprotective activity from liver cell damage induced by carbon tetrachloride on mice with methanol extracts, ethylacetate and butanol fractions of this plant

Flavonoids with anticomplement activity from Persicaria lapathifolia

  • Persicaria lapathifolia Gray (Polygonaceae) is a common weed in Korea. This plant and other Persicaria species including P. orientale and P. pubescens have been used as an analgesic and stomachic as well as for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and malaria. During the screening program of plant extracts, MeOH extract of P. scabrum showed anticomplement activity and the MeOH extract was partitioned with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and buthanol. EtOAc fraction showed strong activity and activity guided separation yielded eight flavonoids. Two known galloylated and a novel ferulloylated flavonoid glycosides showed strong anticomplement activity. Other flavonoid glycosides, kaempferol 3-O-${\alpha}$-$\sub$L/-arabinopyranoside, kaempferol 3-O-${\beta}$-$\sub$D/-glucopyranoside, kaempferol 3-O-${\beta}$-$\sub$D/-galactopyranoside, quercetin 3-O-${\alpha}$-$\sub$L/-arabinopyranoside, quercetin 3-O-${\beta}$-$\sub$D/-glucopyranoside, quercetin O-${\beta}$-$\sub$D/-galactopyranoside did not showed anicomplement activity.

  • The plants medicinal resources of Mt. Chu-woL were investigated 21times from APril, 1975 to August , 1977 and from JuLy, 1988 to August 1989In orther to analyze the vegetation of Chu-woL mountain area , medical wildplants structure and distribution. MedicaL wild plants of Chu-woL moun-tain consisted of 113 familis, 428 species in alL. The resources of important herb drugs were Polypodiaceae, Graminea, Liliaceae , Polygonaceae,Ranunculaceae, Brassicaceae, Rosaceae , Fabaceae, Apiaceae, tabiatae, so-lanaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Campanulaceae, Compositae. The herb drugswere comparatively more than in other mountains in our country .

  • The plants medicinal resources of southern area(Soraksan, Bughansan, Odesan, Gwanagsan, Sollaegsan, Gyeryongsan, Sogrisan, Deogyusan, Chinsan, Jogyesan, Mudeungsan, Hallasan) ofkorea were investigated 10 times from May 1,1992 to November 30,1992In order to analyze the vegetation of southem area, medical wild plants structure and distr:~bution.Medical wild plants of southern area consisted of 94 familis,284 specis in all. The resources of impor-tant herb drugs were Polypodiaceae, Graminea, Liliaceae, polygonaceae, Ranunculaceae,Brassicaceae, Rosaceae, Favaceae, Apiaceae, Ldbiatae, Solanaceae, Companulaceae, Compositae.The herb drygs were comparatively more thanin other mounteins in our country.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the distribution of anticancer medicinal plants in Chonbuk area. The major results are as follows; 1. The total number of anticancer medicinal plants were reported 40 families and 83 species. 2. The results of classfied, order Tubiflorates which took majority among others, had 4 Family respectively. 3. A number of species classified by orders are as follows; 13 genus and 13 species in Family Compositae, 6 species in Family Rosaceae, 5 species in Family Leguminosae, 4 species in Family Labiatae and Family Polygonaceae and 3 species in Family Ranunculaceae, Family Rubiaceae respectively.

Weed Flora of Golf Fields in Korea College of Agriculture Kyungpook National University (골프장에 발생하는 잡초종)

  • About 117 weed species composed of 44 annuals, 26 biennials, and 47 perennials belonging to 36 families were identified from golf fields in both Anyang an Taegu country clubs on May and September, 1989. Graminae was the most widely occuring family covering 21 species, followed by 14 species in compositae, 8 species in leguminosae, polygonaceae and caryophyllaceae respectively, and 5 species in cyperacae etc. The highest numbers of weed species occured in the rough area in golf fields, followed by tee, fairway and green area in orders. The dominant weed species in golf fields based on importance value and frequency were Digitaria Sanguinalis, Poaannua, Polygonum aviculare, Trifohum repens, Plan tago asiatica, Capsella bursa-pastoris Rumx acetocella and Kyllinga brevifolia.

  • Polyphenol QGR (quercetin 3-O-beta-(2"-galloyl)-rhamnopyranoside) was isolated from Persicaria lapathifolia (Polygonaceae). In this study, we investigated inhibitory effects of QGR and its building blocks (quercitrin, quercetin and gallic acid) on superoxide anion and NO productions in unopsonized zymosan-stimulated murine macrophages Raw264.7. QGR and quercetin showed potent inhibitory effects on unopsonized zymosan-induced superoxide anion production with IC50 values of 3.2 uM and 4.8 uM, respectively. (omitted)

  • The present study was conducted during the period July 18-August 11, 1981, at the four industrial complexes(Pohang, Ulsan, Onsan, and Yeochon) using the naked eye method. The study included the survey of plant species growing within a 2km from the area of pollution source, selection of plants tolerant to air pollution and effects of pollution on their growth. The results obtained are as follows; 1) Vascular plants surveyed as to industrial complexes consist of 90 families, 6 subfamilies, 213 genera and 290 species. Major plant families and species for each area are as follows: 1) Pohang area: 54 families, 102 genera and 126 species Leguminosae(16) Graminae(11), Compositae(9) Rosaceae(9) 2) Ulsan area: 61 families, 131 genera, and 158 species Compositae(17) Gramineae(16) Leguminosae(15) Rosaceae(9) Polygonaceae(9) Solanaceae(6) 3) Onsan area: 46 families, 98 genera, and 158 species Compositae(12) Gramineae(12) Leguminosae(12) Rosaceae(6) Polygonaceae(6) 4) Yeochon: 71 families, 150 genera, and 188 species Rosaceae(15) Leguminosae(15) Compositae(14) Graminese(14) Polygonaceae(8) Salicaceae(6) 2. Table 1 shows tolerant plants to air pollution in this study. 3. The following plants may be recommended as planting species at the industrial complex area. Leguminosae: Amorpha fruticosa L. A systematic study of the Polygonum amphibium L. complex (Polygonaceae) based on chloroplast DNA sequences (엽록체 DNA 염기서열에 근거한 물여뀌 종집단(마디풀과)의 분류학적 연구)

  • The Polygonum amphibium complex (Poygonaceae) is a highly polymorphic taxon that can grow in aquatic environments as well as in moist terrestrial habitats. Aquatic and terrestrial plants of the P. amphibium complex vary significantly in morphology and exhibit very complicated patterns of morphological variation, resulting in the description of numerous infra-specific taxa. Principal components analysis of 107 individuals of the P. amphibium complex from Asia and North America using 11 morphological characters showed that the aquatic plants can be discerned from the terrestrial plants by leaf size, shape, and petiole length. In contrast, both aquatic and terrestrial plants collected from the same population or locality shared identical sequences in the matK, psbA-trnH IGS, rbcL-accD IGS and trnL-trnF regions of the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA), suggesting that aquatic and terrestrial forms of the P. amphibium complex are not genetically diverged; morphological differences between the two forms are probably due to the differences in environmental conditions of the habitats. In addition, results from the morphological analysis and the maximum parsimony analysis of the cpDNA data set revealed that the plants from Asia including Korea, Japan, China, Mongolia and Russia Far East are diverged from those in North America and Europe, suggesting that the Asian populations should be recognized as a distinct variety, P. amphibium var. amurense Korsh.

Water Extract of Rhei Rhizoma Prevent Production of Reactive Oxygen Species and Loss of Mitochondrial Membrane Potential in a Hypoxia Model of Cultured Neurons (배양 신경세포의 저산소증모델에서 대황 물추출액의 항산화 및 사립체막전위 소실 억제 효능)

  • Rhei Rhizoma (RR; 大黃) consists of the underground parts (rhizome and root) of Rheum officinale Baill. and Rheum palmatum L. (Polygonaceae), and is widely used in Southeast Asian folk medicine to alleviate liver and kidney damages. In this study, we investigated into the efficacy and mechanism of RR water extract in supporting neuronal survival in a hypoxia model of cultured rat hippocampal neurons. RR exhibited no cytotoxicity up to 10 ${\mu}g$/ml and exhibited neurosupportive effects at 2.5 ${\mu}g$/ml in normoxia. When RR was added to the culture media on 10 days in vitro (DIV10) and given a hypoxic shock (2% $O_2$/5% $CO_2$, 3 hr, $37^{\circ}C$) on DIV13, RR exhibited neuroprotective effects on 5 days post-shock. $H_2DCF$ stainings indicated that RR effectively prevents ROS production in both normoxia and hypoxia. JC-1 stainings showed that RR prevents dissipation of MMP in hypoxia. These results indicate that RR protects neurons by suppressing ROS production and MMP loss.
