In order to study the effect of modified atmosphere storage on extending shelf life of mushrooms, oyster mushroom and Shiitake were wrapped with polyethylene film (PE, $50\;{\mu}m$), and stored at $0.5^{\circ}C$. Mushrooms packed with conventional hardboard box (4kg) lost marketability within $5{\sim}6$ days due to weight loss, shrinkage, browning, spore formation and/or mycellium growth. PE-packing could prevent or retard the deterioration of the mushrooms in the aspects of appearance, texture, discoloration, and microbial contamination. This situation can be best characterized by the reduced respiration rate resulted from the elevated level of carbon dioxide and the reduced level of oxygen in the bag. Although the appearance of the oyster mushroom was maintained for one month, its shelf life was limited to 15 days because of tissue softening. Discoloration of the pileus of shiitake mushroom appears to be the most important factor to determine its marketability. For example, extension of shelf life of Dongo was limited to 15 days, principally due to the browning of the pileus. Shelf life of Hawgo whose color of the pileus changed little over the experimental period, however, could be extened to more than one month.

'Shingo' pears were seal-packaged in polyethylene (PE) film with different thickness of 0.04. 0.06, 0.07, and 0.08mm and stored for five months in an experimental storehouse with the temperature varyine 0 to $7^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity varying 86 to 89%. The atmosphere in PE film bags was modified to 5-l4% oxygen with 3-5% carbon dioxide depending on the film thickness and the storage period. Packaging of pears with PE film effectively reduced the weight loss, which resulted in good appearance after 5 months' storage, while non-packaged pears showed a slight wilt. Decay occurrence was not significantly different among the treatments. but role browning occurred a little more in packaged lots than in non-packaged lot. The sensory panel rated the pears front 0.07mm-thick bag highest in flavor, texture, and juiciness, which might be due to the high sugar content and low titratable acidity. The firmness of pear flesh decreased with the stogare time and its change was found to be highly correlated with that of cellulase activity (correlation coefficient= -0.946). Thisresult indicated that cellulase might be one of the enzymes responsible for the softening of pear fruit during storage.

This study was carried out to develop a method of grain drying ststem that can be done by forcing the heated-air directly into the grains within the sack. The air duct was pushed into the central position of the grain-deposited sack and the heated-air was forced to flow in the radial direction. The system is referred here as the unit sack drying system. At a first step of this study, an air flow resistance tester was constructed to measure the resistance of air flow to grains in cooperated with some different sack materials, the sack materials, the tested were rice-straw bag, sack of polyethylene film, and jute sack In addition, unit sack drying system was constructed to investigate the drying characteristics of the dryer. on this dryer, two kind of terminal air ducts were attached and tested to examine its effects on uniform drying, and also, aseries of drying test was performed to trace the effect of increasing air flow rate on uniform drying. The results are as follows: 1) Resistance of air flow for each sack material was increased almost proportional to the increasing rate of air flow. Experimental data showed little significant differences of the air flow resistance among the materials. 2) From the comparison with air flow resistance of sack material and that of roughrice, it was indicated that airflow resistance of sack material was much higher than that of rice rough Therefore, in the unit sack drying sysle in which air flow is destined to face the sach material after leaving the grain, it was suggested that air flow would be inuniform to each part of grain within sack because of much higher air flow resistance of sack material than that of grain, and the fact would results inuniform grain drying. 3) Drying test on the unit sack drying system in cooperated with different type of terminal air ducts showed that high speed air is better for uniform drying than in high pressure. with the drying system which was assembled with the air ducts delivering higher speed air, there also involved a problem of significant inuniform drying. Therefore, any means to improve the inuniform drying should be undertaken for practical use. 4) A series of drying test with in creasing air flow rate resulted that increasing air flow rate in the unitsack drying system gave little effect on uniform drying, therefore, it is recommened to change its drying system for drying grain uniformly.
In the modified atmosphere packaging of powdered infant formula, the oxygen inside the package may cause its quality deterioration and needs to be minimized for quality preservation. A way of oxygen scavenger inclusion in the single-serve package without contacting the product was devised for removing oxygen residing initially and permeating through the seal layer during the storage. A polyethylene/pulp multi-layer porous filter bag of 5 × 7 cm containing 13 g of powdered infant formula was packaged in an 8 × 9 cm size aluminium laminated film package with a Fe-based oxygen scavenger of 1.8 g. After nitrogen flushed packaging, the active packages were stored at 30℃ for 254 days with periodical quality measurement. The active package could remove the initial residual oxygen of 1.4% completely and maintain absence of oxygen for the whole storage, which contributed to reduced oxidation observed in lower product peroxide value compared to that of the product in the control package. There was no influence of packaging treatment on content of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, reaction product of initial nonenzymatic browning. The devised oxygen-scavenging single-serve package showed a potential to improve the preservation of infant formula powder and extend the shelf life.
This study was conducted to investigate the changes in some physicochemical properties, including pH, moisture and ash content, Ca, Na, Mg, K, crude saponin and codonoposide, of cultivated Codonopsis lanceolata, which were packed with woven polypropylene(WP) or low density polyethylene(LDPE, thickness 0.04 mm) bag and stored at $4^{\circ}C\;or\;20^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. pH of the juice of fresh Codonopsis lanceolata was 5.3 and decreased significantly during storage. Storage temperature exerted more influence upon the content of moisture and ash than package materials. The concentration of Ca, Mg, Na and K were 427.3mg, 203.4mg, 10.2mg, and 619mg per 100g dry matter respectively. The contents of Ca and Na were not changed significantly, but the contents of Mg and K were decreased during room temperature storage. It was revealed that the juices of stored sample had darkened and redness and yellowness were somewhat deeper than those of fresh sample. 1g of the cultivated Codonopsis lanceolata had 29.3mg of crude saponin and 3.78mg of codonoposide, and the changes of them during storage at various conditions were not significant.
This study was carried out to find out the possibility of suppressing the root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) of vegetable crops in vinyl house by soil solarization between crop seasons at Suweon in August, 1986. Soils in vinyl house were sterilized by polyethylene film of 0.03 mm thick with and without inner tunnel within a house(single and double layer solarization), and soil temperatures and nematode densities at 5, 15 and 30cm soil depth were recorded. Rootknot nematodes in soil contained in a vinyl bag were completely killed within 48hr at $40^{\circ}C$ in an incubator. With double layer treatment, the highest temperatures were $48.7^{\circ}C$ at 15cm and $45.2^{\circ}C$ at 30cm soil depth when outdoor temperature was $30^{\circ}C$, and the lethal temperature above $40^{\circ}C$ was recorded for 17 days with 7hr per day at 5cm soil depth from Aug 1 to Aug 31. Due to the increased temperature, root-knot nematode densitiy was suprressed 96,74 and 54% with sigle layer solarization and 100,99 and 98% with double layer solarization at 5,15 and 30cm soil depth, respectively. It is concluded that double layer solarization during hot summer will provide a sufficient level of suppresson on root-knot nematodes remnant in the soil of vegetable crops in vinyl house.

The effects of packaging treatments with either low density polyethylene (LDPE) or polypropylene (PP) films on the quality of leaf lettuce were evaluated. It was also stored within a plastic bag (LDPE and PP films) with 4 pelf orated holes (6mm diameter). Changes in weight loss, color difference, anthocyanin, chlorophyll, water content, and general appearance (shape of lettuce) ware investigated Total weight of leaf lettuce packaged within non-pelf orated films decreased slowly over the storage periods at 5 and $20^{\circ}C$. The weight loss of leaf lettuce showed no significant difference between non-pelf orated and perforated films at $20^{\circ}C$. General appearance in leaf lettuce stored at $20^{\circ}C$ was not significantly affected by packaging treatments with LDPE and PP films. The shelf life of non-packaged leaf lettuce at $5^{\circ}C$ was 8 days, whereas packaging treatments with LDPE and PP films showed freshness in leaf lettuce for 30 days of storage. Total chlorophyll and water contents of leaf lettuce packaged within pelf orated and non-pelf orated films decreased gradually during storage. However, no remarkable changes in color difference, levels of chlorophyll and anthocyanin, and water contents were observed in leaf lettuce packaged within perforated and non-pelf orated films. In this experiment, leaf lettuce packaged within LDPE or PP films without any punching holes at $5^{\circ}C$ was the most desirable for extending the quality. These results suggest that non-pelf orated packaging treatment in combination with low storage temperature could be effective in prolonging the shelf life of leaf lettuce
The effects of hydrocooling and packaging type on the quality attributes of fresh-cut crown daisies (Chrysanthemum coronarium var. spatiosum) were investigated by examining weight loss, respiration, vitamin C content, total chlorophyll content, microbial load, and sensory properties during storage at 4 and 10$^{\circ}C$. Fresh crown daisies were trimmed and washed with cold water (1 and 5$^{\circ}C$) as well as tap water (10$^{\circ}C$) 3 times each for 30 sec. They were then packaged in PP (polypropylene) film bags or PETE (polyethylene terephthalate) trays, and stored for 9 days at 4 and 10$^{\circ}C$, respectively. In general, weight loss was reduced as a result of the washing and packaging. The respiration rate increased slowly during storage at 4$^{\circ}C$, and the vitamin C and total chlorophyll contents of the crown daisies packaged in PETE trays decreased gradually during storage. Finally, the treatments consisting of hydrocooling and then packaging in PETE trays resulted in approximately 1-2 log CFU/g reductions in microbial load.

Master packaging system consists of an inner individual package and secondary outer package. During the stages of chilled transport and distribution, the combination of primary individual package and secondary package was used to maintain a modified atmosphere for shiitake mushrooms. During the retail stage at higher temperature ($25^{\circ}C$), the primary individual package was exposed to display conditions after dismantling of the secondary packaging. The master packaging system was constructed to contain eight individual $30-{\mu}m$ thick polypropylene film bags of 500 g shiitake mushrooms inside a $40-{\mu}m$ low-density polyethylene bag. Carbon dioxide absorbent material [$Ca(OH)_2$] and/or moisture absorbent (superabsorbent polymer) were designed in their required amounts based on respiration characteristics and then applied to the outer secondary packaging in sachet form. Gas concentration of the packaging, temperature, and humidity were monitored throughout transport and storage. The quality of shiitake mushrooms was measured at the retail stage to determine the packaging effect. During the distribution stage of 108 h, $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentrations in the master packaging system were maintained at 9~11% and 1~4% in the inner packaging, respectively, which are good for quality preservation. Compared to the control, the master packaging with $CO_2$ and/or moisture absorbents improved mushroom preservation and particularly reduced decay.
Storage in the form of brown or milled rice saves space and cut cost rather than storage of rough rice, the common way of grain storage in Korea. But, brown or milled rice may be more susceptable to grain aging and sensory change than rough rice. Rice stored in government warehouse for 20 months after harvest was hulled into brown or milled rice and packaged with kraft paper bag (paper package), polyprophylen (PP package), and polyethylene (PE package). Then, after those rice packages were stored under room condition for one year, we investigated germinability, fat acidity, and sensory change to determine milling and packaging effects. Germinability of rough and brown rice was decreased significantly after long-term storge. In germination rate, Chucheong cultivar was lower than Milyang #23, brown rice was lower than rough rice, but there was no differences within packaging materials. TTC test which had a significant correlation with germinability can be used as a handy procedure for predicting grain germination. Fat acidity was increased as the order of rough < milled < brown rice in terms of milling, and PP < paper < PE package in terms of packaging materials. Especially, storage of brown rice increased fat acidity above 30 mg KOH, indicating one of characteristics of grain aging. To prevent from high fat acidity it was necessary to store in forms of rough grain with paper or PP packaging and milled rice with paper, or PP, or PE packaging. In sensory test of stored grain, eating quality in brown rice was the worst because of acidification of fatty acid. Also, eating quality of stored grain became worse as fat acidity increased.
