Aerosol charge neutralizers with various radioactive sources have been used to apply an equilibrium charge distribution to aerosols of unknown charge distribution. However, the performance of aerosol charge neutralizers is not well known, especially for highly charged particles. Measurements of highly charged particles are needed in air cleaning devices, e.g. electrostatic precipitator, bag filter with a pre-charger, and electrical cyclone. In this study, the particle charging characteristics of two different aerosol charge neutralizers were experimentally investigated for singly charged monodisperse particles and highly charged polydisperse particles. One has radioactive source of $^{85}$ Kr (beta source, 2 mCi) and the other has $^{210}$ Po (alpha source, 0,5 mCi). The air flow rate passing through each aerosol charge neutralizer was changed from 0.2 to 2.5 L/min. The results show that the charge distribution of singly charged monodisperse particles passing through the $^{85}$ Kr aerosol charge neutralizer is well agreed with the Boltzmann equilibrium charge distribution at an air flow rate of 0.3 L/min, However, it deviates from the equilibrium charge distribution when the air flow rates are 0.6, 1,0, and 1,5 L/min, On the other hands, the effect of air flow rate is insignificant for the $^{210}$ Po aerosol charge neutralizer. The non-equilibrium character in charge distribution of highly charged polydisperse particles passing through the $^{85}$ Kr aerosol charge neutralizer greatly depends on the air flow rate, however it is insensitive to the air flow rate for the $^{210}$ Po aerosol charge neutralizer.
The modified engineering methodology and the modified electronic circuit in classical ultrasonic principles were applied to ultrasonic aerosol nebulizer for inhalation toxicology study of cadmium aerosol. 1532.96ppm Cd nebulizing solution was used to generate cadmium aerosol for particle size analysis with the modifying source and inlet temperatures. The results of particle size analysis for cadmium aerosol were as following. The highest particle counting for source temperature 20℃ was 399.75 × 10² in inlet temperature 100℃ and particle diameter 0.75㎛. The highest particle counting for source temperature 50℃ was 399.70 × 10² in inlet temperature 50℃ and particle diameter 0.75㎛. The highest particle counting for source temperature 70℃ was 411.14 × 10² in inlet temperature 100℃ and particle diameter 0.75㎛. The ranges of geometric mean diameter were 0.74-0.79㎛ in source temperature 20℃, 0.65-0.72㎛ in source temperature 50℃, and 0.65-0.80㎛ in source temperature 70℃. The smallest geometric mean diameter was 0.65㎛ in source temperature 50, 70℃ and inlet temperature 20, 50℃, and the largest geometric mean diameter was 0.80㎛ in source temperature 70℃ and inlet temperature 100℃. The ranges of geometric standard deviation were 1.71-1.80 in source temperature 20℃, 1.27-1.61 in source temperature 50℃, and 1.27-2.29 in source temperature 70℃. The lowest geometric standard deviation was 1.27 in source temperature 50, 70℃ and inlet temperature 20, 50℃, and the highest geometric standard deviation was 2.29 in source temperature 70℃ and inlet temperature 100℃. Generated aerosol for cadmium inhalation toxicology study was polydisperse aerosol with the above geometric standard deviation 1.2. The ranges of mass median diameter(MMD) were 1.75-2.25㎛ in source temperature 20℃, 1.27-1.61㎛ in source temperature 50℃, and 1.27-2.29㎛ in source temperature 70℃. The smallest MMD was 1.27㎛ in source temperature 50, 70℃ and inlet temperature 20, 50℃, and the largest MMD was 2.29㎛ in source temperature 70℃ and inlet temperature 100℃. Cadmium chloride concentration in nebulizing solution affected the particle size and distribution of cadium aerosol in air. MMO for inhalation toxicology testing in OECD and EU is less than 3㎛ and EPA guidance is less than 4㎛. In our results, in source temperatures of 20, 50, 70℃, and inlet temperatures of 20, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250℃ were conformed to the those guidance.
With a diode corona charger, which is a component of ELPI(Electrical Low Pressure Impactor), aerosol particles are charged to make electrical detection possible before they are collected by the impactor. We designed and evaluated two cylindrical corona chargers, each of which had a central corona needle electrode. For the performance evaluation of each corona charger the polydisperse dioctyl sebacate(DOS) particles, with diameters of 0.1∼0.8 $\mu$m and NaCl particles, smaller than 0.1$\mu$m, were used. The particles were then led through an electrostatic classifier (TSI model 3081) to classify monodisperse aerosol with minimal size deviation. After evaluating the wall loss of the particles in the corona charger, we measured the product of penetration and number of charges, Pㆍn, to evaluate the corona charger efficiency at high positive voltages of 4, 5, 6 kV.

A SMPS(scanning mobility particle sizer) system measures the number size distribution of particles using electrical mobility detection technique. An aerosol charge neutralizer, which is a component of the SMPS, is a bipolar charger using a radioactive source to apply an equilibrium charge distribution to aerosols of unknown charge distribution. However, the performance of aerosol charge neutralizers is not well known, especially for highly charged particles. In this study, the effect of the particle charging characteristics of two aerosol charge neutralizers on the measurement using a SMPS system was experimentally investigated for highly charged polydisperse particles. One has radioactive source of $^{85}$ Kr (beta source, 2 mCi) and the other has $^{210}$ Po (alpha source, 0.5 mCi). The air flow rate passing through each aerosol charge neutralizer was changed from 0.3 to 3.0 L/min. The results show that the non-equilibrium character in particle charge distribution appears as the air flow rate increases although the particle number concentration is relatively low in the range of 1.5∼2x10$^{6}$ particles/㎤. The low neutralizing efficiency of the $^{85}$ Kr aerosol charge neutralizer for highly charged particles can cause to bring an artifact in the measurement using a SMPS system. However, the performance of the $^{210}$ Po aerosol charge neutralizer is insensitive to the air flow rate.
Many commercial air purifiers currently have deployed granular activated carbon (GAC) filters for removing volatile organic compounds in the indoor air. GACs are generally used to remove gaseous contaminants in the air through adsorption by the inner surfaces of pores. In addition, airborne particles can be also filtered by the surface adsorption of the GACs, which can improve the life-time of the particulate filters. In this study, the filtration efficiency of GACs to ultrafine particles through surface adsorption was investigated at different volume flow rates by deploying a continuous particle filtration system. The polydisperse sodium chloride (NaCl) particles were generated by a set of an atomizer and a diffusion dryer, and then mixed with particle-free air at different volume flow rates. The penetration of ultrafine particles and pressure drop for each experimental condition were measured to figure out the effect of the volume flow rate on the surface adsoprtion of the GACs to particles, ~ 2 mm. The particle filtration efficiency of the GACs decreased as the volume flow rate increased from 4 to 14 lpm. However, the 5 times thicker GAC filter layer decreased the penetration of ultraparticles than a preious study. The filtration efficiency of the single granule was also higher than the previous result in the literature with smaller granule filter materials.
This paper describes a condensation-evaporation method (CEM) to produce size-controlled spherical silver nanoparticles by perturbing coagulation and coalescence processes in the gas phase. Polydisperse silver nanoparticles generated by the CEM were first introduced into a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) to select a group of silver nanoparticles with same electrical mobility, which also enables to make a group of nanoparticles with elongated structures and same projected area. These silver nanoparticles selected by the DMA were then in-situ sintered at ${\sim}600^{\circ}C$, and then they were observed to turn into spherical shaped nanoparticles by the rapid coalescence process. With the assistance of modified converging-typed quartz reactor, we can also produce the 10 times higher number concentration of silver nanoparticles compared with a general quartz reactor with uniform diameter. Finally, the spherical silver nanoparticles with 30 nm were electrostatically deposited on the surface of silicon substrate with the coverage rate of ~4%/hr. This useful preparation method of size-controlled monodisperse silver nanoparticles developed in this work can be applied to the various studies for characterizing the physical, chemical, optical, and biological properties of nanoparticles as a function of their size.
