• This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a bioabsorbable bone hemostatic agent comprising poly (ethylene glycol-propylene glycol) copolymers (PEG-PPG) on hemostasis and osteogenesis. Bilateral 3 mm diameter calvarial defects were created in 99 male Sprague-Dawley rats. The defects were filled with PEG-PPG or bone wax. The defects of control group were left unfilled. Virtual autopsy was performed to evaluate bioabsorption. The calvaria were subjected to x-ray microtomography (microCT) and histological examination. Bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured using microCT; furthermore, white blood cell count and histological examination were performed. After application of PEG-PPG and bone wax, immediate hemostasis was achieved. Autopsy revealed that PEG-PPG disappeared within 48 h at the application site; in contrast, bone wax remained until 12 weeks. The PEG-PPG and control groups showed significantly more osteogenesis than the bone wax group with respect to BV/TV and BMD at 3, 6, and 12 weeks (p < 0.05). Histology revealed that the bone wax group exhibited little bone formation with inflammation. In contrast, PEG-PPG and control groups showed significantly more qualitative osteogenesis than the bone wax group (p < 0.01). In conclusion, PEG-PPG showed immediate hemostasis and was absorbed to allow progressive osteogenesis.

  • Poly(crown ether)s as a functional polymer materials have powerful and selective complexation properties with a large number of metal cations and have advantage of facility of their recovery and modification of their complexation properties in contrast to their monomeric analogues. Poly(crown ether)s having pendant macrocyclic groups can easily form 2:1-type crown ether ring-to-cation complexes with particular metal ions which are a little larger than the cavity of the crown ether ring. • Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of alcohol YBCO suspensions on the Ag wire electrode is studied. Poly(ethylene glycol) was coordinated to a structure formed by the EPD process with YBCO particles. The suspension is characterized in terms of zeta potential and conductivity. The d.c electric fields of 200-300 V/cm are applied for 1-10 min. The optimal condition for the EPD allows modifying the properties and microstructure of the deposited films. Superconducting coatings with nanometer-sized pores and a preferred orientation along the c-axis were prepared from the result with chemically modified precursor solution. In contrast, YBCO coatings of submicrometer-sized pores and randomly orientated grains were prepared from the solution without PEG.

  • Silica-filled rubber compounds have slower cure characteristics than carbon black-filled ones due to the adsorption of curatives on the silica surface. Fatty acid was used as a cure activator along with zinc oxide in a sulfur cure system. Poly(ethylene glycol), PEG, was used in silica-filled rubber compounds to prevent adsorption of the curatives on the silica surface. In this study, influence of the size of fatty acid and PEG on properties of silica-filled NR compounds was investigated. It was found that the size of fatty acid and PEG affected the curt: characteristics and physical properties. The cure rate becomes faster as the PEG size increases. By increasing the size of fatty acid or PEG, the delta torque of the compound decreases while the Mooney viscosity increases. The modulus of the vulcanizate decreases with increasing the molecular weight of fatty acid or PEG. The experimental results were explained by the filler dispersion and by the prevention of the curative-adsorption on the silica surface.

  • Crosslinked poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) were prepared by ultraviolet irradiation of low molar mass, liquid PEGs in the presence of benzophenone (BP) as a photoinitiator. The networks obtained have been characterized by DSC, IR, and contact angle measurements, and their water absorption and equilibrium swelling have been examined. The percent of gel formed and degree of swelling of the networks in water were dependent on the amount of BP in the reaction mixture, irradiation time and molar mass of PEG. Gel fraction yield exceeded 84%, and equilibrium swelling in water varied from 49 to 244%.
