The Effect of Global outsourcing on the Environment (글로벌 아웃소싱이 환경에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • As Global value chain(GVC) is deepening, the importance of intermediated good trade is growing in international trade issues. Such facts lead to much discussions about the relation between Global Outsourcing and pollution. This study analyzed the effect of Global outsourcing on Environment using the data including 21 industries for 2004-14. $CO_2$ intensity is used as a proxy for the environment variable and to measure Global outsourcing and I employed the method suggested by Feenstra and Hanson(1999), Amiti and Wei(2006). To examine the effect Global outsourcing on the Environment more precisely, this paper controlled the factors that can affect the environment level on the basis of the theory suggested by Copeland and Taylor(1994). In the methodology, System GMM is employed to solve endogenous problem. The results show that for overall industries, Global outsourcing effect cannot be identified and for polluting industries, the result is identical. However, Global outsourcing has a negative effect on the pollution level for China and developing countries. In other words, as Global outsourcing is increasing, the national pollution level is decreasing.

Cost Structure of Korean Manufacturing Industries connected with the Central Government's Environmental Investment (중앙정부의 환경투자 관련 제조업의 비용분석)

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the cost structure of the Korean manufacturing industry in relation to the central government's environmental investment(CGEI below) by applying translog variable cost function. Important findings are as follows. First, sufficiency degree of CGEI of 0.7230, less than optimal level of 1, causes production inefficiency. Therefore, central government should forward a strategy to raise CGEI to meet appropriate standards. In addition, inspite of the deficiency of CGEI, shadow priceis lower than market price due to q-value of 0.9572, yielding unfavorable conditions for CGEI. However, CGEI brings about increase in output, variable cost saving, and economies of scale of firms. Second, by comparing this study with an existing study(2010), we have discovered the following facts. In both studies, we find that there are deficiency of investment, unfavorable conditions in investment, economies of scale, and output increase due to investment. However, the current study has found that, CGEI, which shows efficiency by positive(+) shadow price, saves variable cost. Therefore, firms suffer from production inefficiency due to variable cost caused by a shortage of efficient CGEI. Moreover, the previous study conducted in 2010 found that investment in prevention of environmental pollution(IPEP below), which indicates inefficiency by negative(-) shadow price, cannot reduce variable cost. In such circumstances, firms yield abnormal production efficiency based on variable cost savings caused by inefficient IPEP. For this reason, firms should raise IPEP to optimal level to reduce IPEP inefficiency to achieve production efficiency by reducing variable cost.

  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulates an emission of greenhouse gases by creating an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) to reduce environmental pollution. In propulsion system field, studies are under way on Energy Saving Device (ESD), which can improve propulsion efficiency with the propeller, to reduce the EEDI. Among the studies, the study of Pre-Swirl Stator (PSS) has been actively conducted from long time ago. Recently the variable pith angle type pre-swirl stator has been studied to improve the propulsion efficiency in non-uniform flow fields of the Stern. However, for traditional design methods, no specific design method has been established on the blade or location of radius. In this study, proper design method is proposed for each blade or location for radius according to hydrodynamic pitch angle.

A Comparative Study on Factors Affecting Housing Satisfaction of Elderly and Non-Elderly Households (고령가구와 비고령가구의 주거만족도 영향요인 비교연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the factors affecting the housing satisfaction of elderly households in comparison with non-elderly households, and to present policy implications in terms of housing welfare policies. For this purpose, this study used ordered logit model analysis using '2019 Housing survey data'. As a result of the analysis, in the case of individual/housing characteristics, the analysis results of the non-elderly household model and the elderly household model were similar. However, in the case of regional characteristics, non-elderly households living in the metropolitan area showed higher housing satisfaction than non-elderly households living in the non-metropolitan area, whereas the elderly households living in the metropolitan area had lower housing satisfaction than the elderly households living in the non-metropolitan area. In addition, the satisfaction variable of neighborhood/environmental characteristics that had the greatest impact on the housing satisfaction of non-elderly households was found to be crime prevention status satisfaction, and the satisfaction variable of neighborhood/environmental characteristics that had the greatest impact on the housing satisfaction of elderly households was air pollution satisfaction. The results of the analysis can be used as various reference materials when establishing housing welfare policies for elderly households.

Spatial-temporal Assessment and Mapping of the Air Quality and Noise Pollution in a Sub-area Local Environment inside the Center of a Latin American Megacity: Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Bogotá Campus

  • The construction, development and maintenance of an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable campus involves the integration of measuring tools and technical information that invites and encourages the community to know the actual state to generate positive actions for reducing the negative impacts over the local environment. At the Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Campus $Bogot{\acute{a}}$, a public area with daily traffic of more than 25000 people, the Environmental Management Bureau has committed with the monitoring of the noise pollution and air quality, as support to the campaigns aiming to reduce the pollutant emissions associated to the student's activities and campus operation. The target of this study is based in the implementation of mobile air quality and sonometry monitoring equipment, the mapping of the actual air quality and noise pollution inside the university campus as a novel methodology for a sub-area inside a megacity. This results and mapping are proposed as planning tool for the institution administrative sections. A mobile Kunak$^{(R)}$ Air & OPC air monitoring station with the capability to measure particulate matter $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, Ozone ($O_3$), Sulfur Oxide ($SO_2$), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Oxide ($NO_2$) as well as Temperature, Relative Humidity and Latitude and Longitude coordinates for the data georeferenciation; and a sonometer Cirrus$^{(R)}$ 162B Class 2 were used to perform the measurements. The measurements took place in conditions of academic activity and without it, with the aim of identify the impacts generated by the campus operation. Using the free code geographical information software QGIS$^{(R)}$ 2.18, the maps of each variable measured were developed, and the impacts generated by the operation of the campus were identified qualitative and quantitively. For the measured variables, an increase of around 21% for the $L_{Aeq}$ noise level and around 80% to 90% for air pollution were detected during the operation period.

Pollution Abatement Costs and Labor Demand in Korea Manufacturing Industries (제조업의 환경오염방지지출과 노동수요)

  • In this study, we try to find out the effect of private companies' environmental protection activities on the labor demand of companies in Korea manufacturing industries with empirical practice from 1992 to 2002. One of the main difficulties in this empirical work is to identify the effect of environmental protection activities on the labor demand, because the effect can be mixed with the effect of traditional production technologies on the labor demand. We follow the suggestion of Morgenstern et al. (2002) to identify the effect but which is not enough because of endogeneity between the production technology improvement and pollution reduction. So we propose a Fixed-effect Instrumental Variable estimation method as an estimation strategy. The estimation results support the positive relationship between the labor demand increase and the increase in pollution abatement costs. Therefore, we can conclude that the environmental protection activites of Korea manufacturing industries from 1992 to 2002 can help job creation without making a big burden for business activities when we consider the share of pollution abatement costs among total production costs is around 1% during that time.

Input Variables Selection by Principal Component Analysis and Mutual Information Estimation (주요성분분석과 상호정보 추정에 의한 입력변수선택)

  • This paper presents an efficient input variable selection method using both principal component analysis(PCA) and adaptive partition mutual information(AP-MI) estimation. PCA which is based on 2nd order statistics, is applied to prevent a overestimation by quickly removing the dependence between input variables. AP-MI estimation is also applied to estimate an accurate dependence information by equally partitioning the samples of input variable for calculating the probability density function. The proposed method has been applied to 2 problems for selecting the input variables, which are the 7 artificial signals of 500 samples and the 24 environmental pollution signals of 55 samples, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed methods has a fast and accurate selection performance. The proposed method has also respectively better performance than AP-MI estimation without the PCA and regular partition MI estimation.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze contributing factors to the perception of elderly's residential problems and satisfaction. The sample in this study consisted of 556 elderly husband and wives over 55 years old living in Seoul Daejeon Jeonju and Daegu. Statistics employed for the analysis were frequencies means one-way anova and umltiple regression analysis. The results could be summarized as follows. Deficiency of privacy was the worst status and then noise and air-pollution and the level of facilties in residential space. And the perception of residential problems could be affected by age health the type of family the number of family the ownership of house the type of house location and the economic status The significant variable positively related to the residential satisfaction were the healthy conditon of eldely ownership of house living in multihousing the perception of privacy and high level of facilities in the house.

Enhancement of Vertical Atmospheric Dispersion Due to Roughness (조도에 기인한 연직방향 대기확산의 증대)

  • Many atmospheric dispersion models have been based on the Gaussian distribution concept of plume spread. In application of Gaussian plume dispersion models, vertical dispersion coefficient 3 has been known as a sensitive variable. Vertical diffusivity K2 (=Oz2/2t) tends to increase with surface roughness, and the value of K3 in urban area is larger than that in rural area due to heat emission as well as increased roughness. Though Pasquill proposed a modification scheme for qz vs x system of Pasquill-Gifford under consideration of roughness effect in 1976, there appears not to be realistic reexamination on the modification scheme. In this study literature review on the effect of terrain or roughness on venical plume dispersion has been carried out in order to improve the prediction results of atmospheric pollution concentration. Again a few research objectives on vertical atmospheric dispersion in complex terrain were Proposed.

  • The detection of engine misfire events is one of major concerns in engine control due to its negative effect on air pollution and engine performance. In this paper, a misfire detection system based on crankshaft angular speed fluctuation is developed. Synthetic variable method is adopted for the preprocessing of crankshaft angular speed. This method successfully estimates the work output of each cylinder by finding the effect of combustion energy on the crankshaft rotational speed or acceleration after virtually removing the effect of the internal inertia forces from the measured crankshaft speed signals. The detection system is developed using neural network with the revised synthetic angular acceleration as input which is derived from the preprocessing. Mathematical simulation is carried out for developing and verifying the misfire detection system. Finally, the reliability of the developed system is validated through an experiment.
