In the developing country like India, groundwater is the main sources for household, irrigation and industrial use. Its contamination poses hydro-geological and environmental concern. The hazardous waste sites such as landfills can lead to contamination of ground water. The contaminants existing at such sites can eventually find ingress down through the soil and into the groundwater in case of leakage. It is necessary to understand the process of migration of pollutants through sub-surface porous medium for avoiding health risks. On this backdrop, the present paper investigates the behavior of pollutants' migration through porous media. The laboratory experiments were carried out on a soil-column model that represents porous media. Two different types of soils (standard sand and red soil) were considered as the media. Further, two different solutes, i.e., non-reactive and reactive, were used. The experimental results are simulated through numerical modeling. The percentage variation in the experimental and numerical results is found to be in the range of 0.75- 11.23 % and 0.84 - 1.26% in case of standard sand and red soil, respectively. While a close agreement is observed in most of the breakthrough curves obtained experimentally and numerically, good agreement is seen in either result in one case.

In this study, the solubilization of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) using oil-based emulsion was investigated for aquifer remediation. The micro-sized oil emulsion has large surface areas and buoyancy force, therefore it can be effective in treating DNAPL pool of the aquifer without downward migration of DNAPLs. The emulsion was prepared using silicone oil and mechanical homogenization. And the prepared emulsion had micro-sized similar distribution: 99 % in number and 80 % in volume were less than 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As target pollutants, trichloroethylene and 1, 2 dichlorobenzene were selected. All of used DNAPLs were solubilized successfully in oil-based emulsion. Even at low oil percentage, emulsion showed good solubility against pollutants. Therefore, the remediation using oil-based emulsion was considered as an effective alternative in dealing with DNAPLs of the aquifer.

Sandy soils are generally used as a capping material to reduce the pollutants transport from the contaminated dredged sediment. However, dredged material capping is not widely used because regulatory agencies are concerned about the potential for contaminants migration through the cap. Movement of contaminated pore water from sediment into cap is mainly related to sediment consolidation during and after cap placement. To evaluate the significance of consolidation induced transport of contaminants from sediment into cap, research centrifuge tests were conducted. Centrifuge test results illustrate that advection and dispersion are the dominant contaminants transport processes and that capping reduces the potential of contaminant migration from the dredged sediment effectively.
Radon and radon progeny being natural radioactive pollutants, seriously affect the health of uranium miners. Radon reduction by ventilation is an essential means to improve the working environment. Firstly, the relational model is built between the radon exhalation rate of the loose body and the ventilation parameters in the stope with radon percolation-diffusion migration dynamics. Secondly, the model parameters of radon exhalation dynamics are uncertain and described by triangular membership functions. The objective functions of the left and right equations of the radon exhalation model are constructed according to different possibility levels, and their extreme value intervals are obtained by the immune particle swarm optimization algorithm (IPSO). The fuzzy target and fuzzy constraint models of radon exhalation are constructed, respectively. Lastly, the fuzzy aggregation function is reconstructed according to the importance of the fuzzy target and fuzzy constraint models. The optimal control decision with different possibility levels and importance can be obtained using the swarm intelligence algorithm. The case study indicates that the fuzzy aggregation function of radon exhalation has an upward trend with the increase of the cut set, and fuzzy optimization provides the optimal decision-making database of radon treatment and prevention under different decision-making criteria.
Pollutants such as heavy metals and explosives originating from the military operational ranges can be migrated to adjacent surface water body or offsite soil, and can affect to local residents and aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, Korea Ministry of the National Defense has established various guidelines for environmental management including the installation of pollutant migration prevention facilities (PMPFs) and monitoring methodologies for heavy metals in the operational range soil and effluent and sediment of PMPFs. However, current guidelines neither address the explosive compounds such as 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) nor suggest detailed environmental investigation protocol. This paper introduces the new “Environmental Management Manual for Military Firing Ranges”, which includes the environmental criteria for explosives as well as the detailed investigation protocol for the affected environmental media including soil, effluent and sediment of PMPFs.
In this study, research results on organic and inorganic pollutant migration through single and composite liner were summarized. On the basis of these summarized research results, a design program for landfill liner, which can be used to optimize the liner thickness based on the allowable ground water criteria around the landfill subsurface, was developed. A reasonable liner thickness was obtained from the program output results, in the case of the migration of $Cl^-$ ion through a single clay liner. Therefore, the developed program could be used to carry out a preliminary design for landfill liners with respect to organic and inorganic pollutants.
Simultaneous mobility reduction of explosives and heavy metals in an operational range by monopotassium phosphate (MKP) and bentonite spreading technology was investigated. Potassium ion and phosphate ion in MKP act as explosives sorption enhancer and insoluble heavy metal phosphate formation, respectively, while bentonite acts as the explosives adsorbent. Then, the decrease in surface water concentration of the pollutants and resulting risk reduction for local residents of the operational range, by MKP/bentonite application was estimated. Under untreated scenario, the noncancer hazard index (HI) exceeded unity on February, July and August, mainly due to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT); however, MKP/bentonite treatment was expected to lower the noncancer hazard index by decreasing the surface water concentration of explosives and heavy metals (especially TNT). For example, on July, estimated surface water concentration and HI of TNT were 0.01 mg/L and 1.1, respectively, meanwhile the sorption coefficient of TNT was 3.9 mg1−nkg−1Ln. However, by MKP/bentonite treatment, the TNT sorption coefficient increased to 113.8 mg1−nkg−1Ln and the surface water concentration and HI decreased to about 0.002 mg/L and 0.2, respectively. Based on the result, it can be concluded that MKP/bentonite spreading is a benign technology that can mitigate the risk posed by the pollutants migration from operational ranges.

There is growing consciousness of the environmental performance of buildings in Hong Kong. The Buildings Department, the Lands Department and the Planning Department of the Hong Kong Government issued the first of a series of joint practice notes [1] to promote the construction of green and innovative buildings. Green features are architectural features used to mitigate migration of noise and various air-borne pollutants and to moderate the transport of heat, air and transmission of daylight from outside to indoor environment in an advantageous way. This joint practice note sets out the incentives to encourage the industry in Hong Kong to incorporate the use of green features in building development. The use of green features in building design not only improves the environmental quality, but also reduces the consumption of non-renewable energy used in active control of indoor environment. Larger window openings in the walls of a building may provide better natural ventilation. However, it also increases the penetration of direct solar radiation into indoor environment. The use of wing wall, one of the green features, is an alternative to create effective natural ventilation. This paper therefore presents a preliminary numerical study of its ventilation performance using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The numerical results will be compared with the results of the wind tunnel experiments of Givoni.

A Lunar observatory not only provides ideas and experiences for space settlements from the Moon to Mars, but also puts the telescope in an optimal position to compete with space telescopes. Earth observation on the Moon's surface has the advantage of no atmospheric scattering or light pollution and is a stable fuel-free observation platform, allowing all longitude and latitude of the Earth to be observed for a month. Observing the entire globe with a single observation instrument, which has never been attempted before, and calculating the global albedo will significantly help predict the weather and climate change. Spectropolarimetric observations can reveal the physical and chemical properties of the Earth's atmosphere, track the global distribution and migration path of aerosols and air pollutants, and can also help detect very small space debris of which the risk has increased recently. In addition, the zodiacal light, which is difficult to observe from Earth, is very easy to observe from the lunar observatory, so it will be an opportunity to reveal the origin of the solar system and take a step closer to understanding the exoplanet system. In conclusion, building and developing a lunar observatory will be a groundbreaking study to become the world's leader that we have never tried before as a first step in expanding human experience and intelligence.
