This study aims to estimate the biological decomposition capacity of MPC(Microorganism Porous-Concrete). MPC has specific surface area formed by inside pores, and bio compound was added to those pores to reduce pollutants loading. To evaluate the water purification capacity of MPC, we carried out the comparative studies using different media types [GPC(General Porous-concrete), CPC(Compound porous-concrete), LPC(Lightweight aggregate porous-concrete)] under the condition of CFSTR, and different retention times (30, 60 and 120 min). We also estimated the purification capacity of MPC under different concentrations of pollutant loadings. The MPC showed higher efficiency in water purification function than other conventional porous concretes with efficient decrease rates of SS, BOD, COD, and nutrient concentrations. In the comparison experiment for different retention times, MPC showed the highest removal efficiency for all tested pollutants in the longest retention time(120 min). In the long period test, the removal efficiencies of MPC concrete were high until 100 days after the set up of the operation, but began to decrease. Outflow flux was invariable compared with inflow flux so that extra detention time for media fouling such as back washing is not needed. But the results suggested that appropriate management is necessary for long-term operation of MPC. As the final outcome, MPC using bio organisms is considered to be efficient for stream water purification when they used as substrates for artificial river structure.
The phosphorus contribution rate on water quality of North and South-Han River, and Gyungan-cheon by effluents from environmental fundamental facilities located in upstream basin of Paldang Lake were analyzed. QUALKO2 model was selected for the analysis of contrubution rate, and was constructed considering the location of the main point sources and all facilities in study area. The pollutant loading rates and arrival rates for each unit-watershed in study area were calculated for model operation. For the calibration and verification of model, 2006 water quality dataset from Ministry of Environment and the effluent loadings of the environmental fundamental facilities were used. Reliability Index (RI) method was used to estimate the validity of the results of calibration and verification. The phosphorous contribution rate(%) for each environmental fundamental facility were analyzed by excepting the effluent loading of the facility. The contribution rate was analyzed for each facility, facility groups separated by each main river and each unit-watershed. The main results of analysis for each facility are as follows; (i) the phosphorous contribution of B1 facility is 50%, which is the highest phosphorous contribution rate among those of nine facilities in the North-Han River Basin; (ii) the highest phosphorous contribution is 55.6% from J facility among eight facilities in the Gyungan Stream Basin; (iii) 40% from E treatment facility is the highest among those of twenty eight facilities in the South-Han River Basin.
Growth in population and urbanization has progressively increased the loadings of pollutants from non-point sources as well as point sources. Separated sewer overflows(SSO) have been considered as a major cause of water-quality deterioration of natural water-courses in the vicinity of the heavily urbanized areas. The factors defining the magnitude and occurrence of SSO are site-specific. It is important to know exact properties of pollutants contained in SSO to address water quality impacts that are caused by SSO inputs to the receiving waters. Site and event parameters found to have significant influences on urban runoff pollutant EMCs include total event rainfall, antecedent dry period, rainfall intensity. In this study, a field survey was carried out in some selected areas of Cheongju city. Literature from previous similar studies was consulted and some important factors affecting the runoff characteristics of urban drainage areas were analyzed for some selected survey points. It was found that the factors most affecting BOD are the number of dry days prior to rainfall and the intensity of the rainfall. The factor most affecting CODcr is the number of dry days prior to rainfall. The factors most affecting SS are the amount of rainfall and the number of dry days prior to rainfall. The factor most affecting TN is the amount of rainfall. The factor most affecting TP is the amount of rainfall and the number of dry days prior to rainfall.
SWAT-K model is a modified version of the original SWAT, and is known to more accurately estimate the streamflows and pollutant loadings in Korean watersheds. In this study, its hydrological components were compared with those of HSPF in order to analyse the differences in total runoff including evapotranspiration(ET), surface flow, lateral flow and groundwater flow from the Chungju Dam watershed during $2000{\sim}2006$. Averaged annual runoff with SWAT-K overestimated by 1%, and HSPF underestimated it by 3% than observed runoff. Determination coefficients($R^2$) for observed and simulated daily streamflows by both the models were relatively good(0.80 by SWAT-K and 0.82 by HSPF). Potential ET and actual ET by HSPF were lower in winter, but similar or higher than those by SWAT-K. And though there were some differences in lateral and groundwater flows by two models because of the differences in hydrological algorithms, the results were to be reasonable. From the results, it was suggested that we should utilize a proper model considering the characteristic of study area and purposes of the model application because the simulated results from same input data could be different with models used. Also we should develop a novel model appropriate to Korean watersheds by enhancing limitations of the existing models in the future.

Abstract Over the last several decades, crop production in the United States increased largely due to the extensive use of animal waste and fertilizers as plant nutrient supplements, and pesticides for crops pests and weed control. Without the application of animal waste best management, the use of animal waste can result in nonpoint source pollution from agricultural land area. In order to increase nutrient levels and decrease contamination from agricultural lands, nonpoint source pollution is responsible for water quality degradation. Nonpoint source pollutants such as animal waste, ferilizers, and pesticides are transported primarily through runoff from agricultural areas. Nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, can be a major water quality problem because they cause eutrophic algae growth. In 1985, it was presented that Watershed/Water Quality Monitoring for Evaluation BMP Effectiveness was implemented for Nomini Creek Watershed, located in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The watershed is predominantly agricultural and has an aerial extent of 1505 ha of land, with 43% under cropland, 54% under woodland, and 3% as homestead and roads. Rainfall data was collected at the watershed from raingages located at sites PNI through PN 7. Streams at stations QN I and QN2 were being measured with V-notch weirs. Water levels at the stream was measured using an FW-l Belfort (Friez FWl). The water quality monitoring system was designed to provide comprehensive assessment of the quality of storm runoff and baseflow as influenced by changes in landuse, agronomic, and cultural practices ill the watershed. As this study was concerned with the Nomini Creek Watershed, the separation of storm runoff and baseflow measured at QNI and QN2 was given by the master depletion curve method, and the loadings of baseflow and storm runoff for TN (Total Nitrogen) and TP (Total Phosphorus) were analyzed from 1987 through 1989. The results were studied for the best management practices to reduce contamination and loss of nutrients, (e.g., total nitrogen and total phosphorus) by nonpoint source pollution from agricultural lands.

Lake Doam watershed was surveyed to evaluate non-point source discharge characteristics and discharge load including several water quality parameters in Song Stream from July 2009 to July 2011. Concentrations of water pollutants were high during the rainfall period, especially, SS, TP and COD showed increasing tendencies toward cumulative water discharge but TN did not show much difference. SS, TP and COD had an initial flush effect of over 50 mm rainfall event but there was no clear tendency for rainfalls below that level. Event mean concentration (EMC) regarding the rainy and dry period showed large differences. Especially rainy season EMC (SS, TP, COD) demonstrated an increasingly high tendency. EMCs of COD, SS, TN and TP measured for twelve rain events were as high as 26.1, 866.0, 4.68 and 0.605 mg $L^{-1}$, respectively. COD, SS, TN and TP loadings from the highland agricultural region of the Song Stream watershed were 34,263, 1,250,254, 2,673 and 933 kg $yr^{-1}\;km^{-2}$, respectively, which were relatively higher than the results of other stream systems. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that long-term monitoring and non-point pollution reduction programs for the highland agricultural area to continue. Furthermore, this non-point source pollution loading research acquired from the highland agricultural area could be the base for reassessment.

A long-term water quality study has been initiated by the Korean Ministry of Environment(MOE) - The G-7 Project--in cooperation with two national research institutes, an University research tn and a consulting firm. This study includes the development of computer software for total water quality management system, so called ISWQM (Integrated System of Water Quality Management). ISWQM includes four major components: a GIS database; two artificial intelligence (AI) based expert systems to estimate pollutant loadings and to provide cost-effective wastewater treatment system for small and medium size urban areas; and computer programs to integrate the database and expert systems. ISWQM is to provide user-friendly Decision Support System (DSS) for water quality planners. A GIS was used to create spatial database which stores all the necessary data to n DSS. GIS was also used to integrate the four components of ISWQM from data creation to decision making through Graphic User Interface (GUI). The results from the first phase of this study showed that GIS would provide an effective tool to build DSS using expert system.
The objective of this study was to develop and apply a water quality simulation model for the evaluation of ungaged watershed. The Modified WASP5 consisted of three sub-models, LOAD-M, DYN-M, and EUT-M. LOAD-M, an empirical model, estimates runoff loadings using point and non-point source data of villages. Daecheong Dam watershed was selected for the research to calibrate, verify and application of Modified-WASP5. LOAD-M model was established using field data collected from all items of water quality and water quantity gaging stations of the watersheds, and was applied to the ungauged watersheds, taking the watershed properties under consideration. The result of water quality simulation using ModifiedWASP5 shows that the observed BOD data of Yongpo and Daechong Dam in 1999 were 0.8 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L, and simulated data were 0.9 mg/L and 0.9 mg/L, respectively. In case of 1999, average BOD concentrations were 0.8 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L. Simulated concentration showed 1.1 mg/L and 1.5 mg/L, respectively. Generally, the simulation results were in good agreement with the observed data. This study was focused on formulating an integrated model for evaluating ungauged watersheds. Even though simulation results varied slightly due to limited availability of data, the model developed in this study would be a useful tool for the assessment and management of ungauged watersheds.
Despite the widespread use of GIS over the past ten years, it has been limited application for regional modeling of pollutant loadings such as sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus(non-point source pollution), The goals of this study were to: select important processes and parameters of watersheds that contribute to non-point source pollution degradation, develop a ranking model to use the environmental geologic data and verify the model by comparing results with existing water quality data(Chung-ju Lake) for specific watersheds, The GIS database consisted of topography, geology, soils, precipitation, rainfall erosivity, land use, and watershed boundaries. The index(NPSP) for assessing non-point source pollution was comprised in the following three seperate components: soil loss index(SLI) assesses the potential soil erosion and sedim-ent delivery from field to stream; run-off potential ratio(R.P.R) predicts the potential production of surface runoff; chloropgyll-a index ranks the potential manure(animal or human) production within a watershed. The GIS model was a valuable tool to assess the impact of environmental pollation in watersheds.

In this study, we conducted water-quality analysis of wastewater and in-situ flow measurement using automatic flow rate measuring instrument to identify characteristics of wastewater in urban areas, and collected samples in gutter fur storm water drain, rainfall bucket, and aqueduct of pipe from roof, and outfalls of basins to examine the contribution by pollution origins such as base wastewater, atmospheric washing, runoff by roof surface, runoff by road surface, erosion of sewer sediment. In the result, the concentration of pollutants reached peak in the beginning of rainfall due to first flush, was 3 to 10 times higher than average concentration of dry period, and was lower than that of dry period due to dilution of storm water. In the analysis of the contribution by pollution origins, the ratio of load by sewer sediment resuspension to the total pollution load was 54.6% fer COD, and 73.3% fur SS. Accordingly, we can reduce the total pollutant load by periodical dredging and washing of sewer sediment, and control the loadings by overflow of combined sewer overflows.
