The purpose of this study is to compare calculated pollutant loadings using pollutant load unit factors and vector type coverage, and expected mean concentration(EMC) and raster type of digital elevation model(DEM). This study is also focusing on comparison of the advantages and the disadvantages of the two methods, and seeking for a method of calculation of pollutant loadings using DEM. Estimation of pollutant inputs using pollutant load unit factors has limitations in identifying seasonal variations of pollutant loadings. Seasonal changes of runoffs should be considered in the calculation of pollutant loadings from catchments into reservoirs. Evaluation of pollutant inputs using runoff-coefficient and EMC can overcome these drawbacks. Proper EMC and runoff-coefficient values for the Koeup stream catchments of the Koheung estuarine lake were drawn from review of related papers. Arc/Info was employed to establish database of spatial and attribute data of point and non-point pollutant sources and characteristics of the catchments. ArcView was used to calculate point and non-point pollutant loadings. Pollutant loads estimated with either unit factors-coverages, i.e., pollutant load unit factors and vector coverages f point sources and land use, or EMC and digital elevation mode(DEM) were compared with stream monitoring loads. We have found that some differences were shown between monitoring results and estimated loads by Unit Factors-Coverage and EMC-DEM. Monthly variations of pollutant loads evaluated with EMC-DEM were similar to those with monitoring result. The method using EMC-DEM can calculate accumulated flows and pollutant loads and can be utilized to identify stream networks. A future research on correcting the difference between vector type stream using flow direction grid and digitalizing vector type should be conducted in order to obtain more exact calculation of pollutant loadings.
Discharge characteristics of pollutant loadings from sewage systems were estimated in the catchment area of a reclaimed area - Saemangeum -. Pollutant loadings were estismated according to the discharge pattern of small treatment facilities. BOD pollutant loadings produced by population were 84,380kg/day, which were composed of nightsoil 35% and sewage 65%.
In order to control the water quality in rivers or lakes, it is needed to evaluate accurate amount of pollutant loadings from watersheds. The daily pollutant loadings were simulated using the pollutant loading calculation model which was composed of mathematical equations superimposed on the TANK model. The calibration of runoff and pollutant loading parameters were carried out with observed data, using a trial-and-error method. In addition, the proposed model was applied to evaluate its applicability for the representative watershed, the Bokha river watershed, Icheon city, Korea. The parameters of SS and T-P showed large values in the first tank while T-N showed large in the second tank. As a result of simulating the daily pollutant loadings by the pollutant loading calculation model, all of SS, T-N and T-P loadings were increased or decreased according to the amount of runoff discharge. Especially, it was apparent that SS and T-P loadings were significantly influenced by the runoff variation when it was rain. These results could partly explain that SS and T-P would occur mainly from the surface runoff while T-N would occur from both surface and subsurface flow.
Discharge characteristics of pollutant loadings from domestic systems were estimated in the catchment of a reclaimed area, Saemankeum. Pollutant loadings was estimated according to the discharge pattern of small treatment facilities. Recycled-fertilizer system was dominant in this area.
A hydrologic and water quality monitoring network were established in the Balkan-reservoir watershed, which has 29.79 $km^2$ in size, to analyze the characteristics of pollutant loading from an agricultural small watershed. Soil type, land use, hydrologic soil group, population and livestock were also surveyed to make clear the pollutant sources and to calculate the pollutant loadings by the unit loading factor method which was proposed by the Ministry of Environment. From the 5-year hydrologic monitoring results, sub-watersheds located in the upstream of the reservoirs showed higher average runoff ratio. The calculated daily pollutant loadings by the unit loading factor method from HP#2 sub-watershed in the downstream of Balkan reservoir, were much greater than observed.
Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was selected as a tool for assessing the effect of pollutant sources on the total loads from the Chungju Dam upstream watershed. The model was constructed through calibration of parameters related to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), which was based on the runoff and sediment modeling performed in the previous research. Using this, the spatial and temporal pollutant loadings by source type were investigated. Results of this study indicated that in most forested upstream sub-watersheds, pollutant loadings from point sources were very low, and total loadings by point and non-point sources were also insignificant. On the other hand, in #14 sub-watershed including Jecheon city, the loadings by point source were relatively considerable. For the whole watershed, non-point sources accounted for 99% of sediment, 97% of N, and 93% of P loads. And monthly non-point source loadings were concentrated on rainy summer season, while point source loadings of N and P kept nearly constant throughout the year and were high on dry winter season relative to non-point source.
In recent years the human impact on the environment becomes increasing lift threatening, calls for the better management of resources. In field of water quality of river flow, the best way to conserve water quality is specific efforts to control the pollutant loadings and treat the loadings in the basin to reduce the discharge of pollutant loadings to river. But in general the water quality influenced by the dam discharge. Especially in dry season, it is more dominant way to improve the water quality which contaminated with the pollutant loadings from the basin. The dam discharge amounts of the 2 dams in the Keum River that maintain the down stream water quality were estimated for the year of 1999, 2001, 2006, 2011, in case of irrigation and non-irrigation seasons. The pollutant loadings for the basin are estimated with the planning of treatment plants construction schedule for every sub-basins. The river flow rates were considered low flow as 2.33 year low flow and 10 year low flow. The QUAL2E model was used as a tool of simulation.
In this study, the material cycle model was applied to suggest alternative management of water quality for Jeju Harbor. The distribution of COD, DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) and DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphorus) concentrations was reasonably reproduced by simulations on the model area of the Jeju Harbor using a material cycle model. The simulations of COD, DIN and DIP concentrations were performed under the conditions of 20∼100% pollution loadings reductions from pollution sources. In case of the 100% reduction of the input loads from Sanzi river, concentrations of COD, DM and DIP were reduced to 39%, 78% and 52%, respectively at Jeju harbor. In contrast, in case of the pollutant loadings reductions from sediment, the effect of DIN and DIP reduction relatively seemed to increase around the center of study area. The 95% reduction of the pollutant loadings from river and sediment is required to meet the COD and nutrients concentration of second grade of ocean water quality criteria.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of water quality in Jeju harbor and to estimate pollutant loadings discharged into Jeju Harbor. To know characteristics of water quality in Jeju harbor, and pollutant loadings of Sanzi river, we have investigated from August, 2000 to May, 2001. The results showed that the concentrations of COD, DIN and DIP were in the range of 1.00∼4.85 mg/L (mean 2.15 mg/L), 2.14∼74.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at/L(mean 12.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at/L) and 0.52∼4.00 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at/L(mean 1.18 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at/L), respectively. These values were under III class of seawater quality criteria. The ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus was lower than 16 except for Station 1 in Jeju harbor. Therefore, nitrogen was playing an important role in phytoplankton growth as limiting factor in Jeju harbor. The mean values of eutrophication index were exceeding 1, which was the eutrophication criteria. The results of estimating pollutant loadings at Sanzi river are 0.30 ton/day for COD, 300 kg/day for DIN and 18.0 kg/day for DIP, respectively.
