  • Purpose: This study was to evaluate the effect of coloring liquids on the shear bond strength between zirconia and veneering ceramic. Methods: Zirconia(15 mm in diameter, 2.5 mm in thickness; n=40) used in the experiment were divided into 5 groups depending on the coloring liquid. Each specimen were polished using a polishing machine(LaboPol-2, Struers, UK). A cylinder of veneering porcelain(6 mm in diameter, 3 mm in thickness) was fabricated and fired on zirconia surfaces. The shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine(Model 4302, Instron, USA). All data were analyzed statistically using a one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons test. After the shear bond test, fracture surfaces were examined by SEM. Results: Colored zirconia showed a higher shear bonding strength than that of uncolored zirconia except for colored zirconia immersed in Zirkonzahn coloring liquid. In particular, colored zirconia immersed in Kuwotech coloring liquid showed the highest shear bond strength. After the shear bond test, mixed failure patterns were mainly observed in the failure between zirconia and veneering ceramic. Conclusion: Coloring liquid enhanced the shear bond strength zirconia and veneering ceramic than uncolored zirconia.

  • Monolayers of graphite can be grown by fine controlled surface graphitization on the surfaces of various metallic and semiconducting materials. Epitaxial graphene grown on polished silicon carbide crystal surfaces has drawn much attention due to well known vacuum annealing procedures from surface analysis methods, especially scanning tunneling microscopy(STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy(STS). In this study, we have grown single layer and few layer graphene on silicon terminated 6H-SiC(0001) crystals. The growth of graphene layers were observed by low energy electron diffraction(LEED) patterns. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements were performed to illustrate the electronic structure which may display some clue on the influence of the underlying structure. Spatially resolved STS results acquired at the edges of epitaxial graphene show in detail the electron density of states, which is compared to theoretical calculations. STM measurements were also done on graphene films grown by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) and transferred onto a SiC(0001) crystal. These observations may provide a hint for the understanding of carrier scattering at the edges.

  • Wake-induced aerodynamics of yawed circular cylinders with smooth and grooved surfaces in a tandem arrangement was studied. This pair of cylinders represent sections of stay-cables with smooth surfaces and high-voltage power conductors with grooved surfaces that are vulnerable to flow-induced structural failure. The study provides some insight for a better understanding of wake-induced loads and galloping problem of bundled cables. All experiments in this study were conducted using a pair of stationary section models of circular cylinders in a wind tunnel subjected to uniform and smooth flow. The aerodynamic force coefficients and vortex-shedding frequency of the downstream model were extracted from the surface pressure distribution. For measurement, polished aluminum tubes were used as smooth cables; and hollow tubes with a helically grooved surface were used as power conductors. The aerodynamic properties of the downstream model were captured at wind speeds of about 6-23 m/s (Reynolds number of 5×104 to 2.67×105 for smooth cable and 2×104 to 1.01×105 for grooved cable) and yaw angles ranging from 0° to 45° while the upstream model was fixed at the various spacing between the two model cylinders. The results showed that the Strouhal number of yawed cable is less than the non-yawed case at a given Reynolds number, and its value is smaller than the Strouhal number of a single cable. Additionally, compared to the single smooth cable, it was observed that there was a reduction of drag coefficient of the downstream model, but no change in a drag coefficient of the downstream grooved case in the range of Reynolds number in this study.

  • Statement of problem. There have been previous studies about instability according to screw material by means of calculating preload in tightening screw or recording of the torque necessary to loosen screw after tightening screw. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate screw joint stability through the analysis of fitness at the mating thread surfaces between implant and screw after tightening screws made of different materials. Material and methods. In this study, screws were respectively used to secure a cemented abutment to a hexlock implant fixture; teflon coated titanium alloy screw and titanium alloy screw(Steri-Oss), gold-plated gold-palladium alloy screw and titanium alloy screw(Implant Innovation), gold screw and titanium screw(AVANA Dental Implant System). Each abutment screw was secured to the implant with recommended torque value using a digital torque controller. Each screw was again tightened after 10minutes. All samples were cross sectioned with sandpaper and polished. Then samples were evaluated with an scanning electron microscope analysis. Results. In titanium alloy screw, irregular contact and relatively large gap was present at mating thread surface. Also in teflon-coated titanium screw, incomplete seating and only partially contact was present at the mating thread surface. In gold-plated gold-palladium alloy screw, relatively close and tight contact without the presence of large gap was present by existing of gold coating at the mating thread surfaces. In gold alloy screw, relatively small gap between the mating components was seen. Conclusions. This result suggested that gold plated gold-palladium alloy screw and gold alloy screw achieved a greater degree of contact at the mating thread surfaces compared to titanium alloy screw and teflon-coated titanium alloy screw.

  • Wear and wear transition mechanisms during sliding as a function of time in Al2O3 have been studied to understand the wear behaviour of brittle ceramic materials. Commercial Si3N4 ball was rotated against flat Al2O3 specimens which were hot pressed and polished using upto 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diamond paste. Paraffin oil was used as a lubricant. Experimental data show that wear of Al2O3 is separated into distinct two stages, i.e., initial stage of slow wear and final stage of rapid wear. Microstructural observations at worn surface show that wear occurs through grooving and grain pull-out in the initial and final stage respectively. TEM observations beneath the worn surfaces show that grain pull-out starts to occur by the propagation of grain boundary cracks induced by dislocation pile-up throughthe surface.

  • This paper describes the surface polishing characteristics of a flat and free surface ferromagnetic substance(SM45C) that magnetic abrasive polishing processed. The effects of the various working factors on the surface roughness are clarified by experiments respectively, such as magnetic flux density. rotation speed of magnetic head. working gap, feed rate of workpiece. diameter of magnetic abrasives. and shape of workpiece. On the basis of these experiments, the polishing mechanism is discussed and the characteristics of the polishing process are described. In addition, it is found experimentally that die & mold surfaces are also polished precisely by this process

  • Ferroelectric $Sr_{0.3}Ba_{0.7}Nb_{2}O_{6}$ (SBN30) thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/$SiO_{2}$/Si(100) substrates by ion beam sputtering. During annealing treatment at $750^{\circ}C$, poling was attempted by applying dc voltage bias across polished surfaces. Phase relation, microstructure and crystallization behavior were examined using XRD and FE-SEM. Ferroelectric hysteresis characteristics were also determined where both remanent polarization and coercive values decreased with the increase of bias voltage. The measured remanent polarization and coercive field values at 5 V and 10 V bias were $36{\mu}C/cm^2$, $10{\mu}C/cm^2$ and 100kV /cm, 80kV /cm, respectively.

  • Tribological behavior of the diamond-like carbon (DLC) films sliding on floppy disk has been investigated. Hydrogenated DLC films have been prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using methane and hydrogen mixture in different volume ratios on ferrite substrates. DLC films show lower friction coefficients (0.2~0.4) than those of the uncoated ferrite(0.4~0.5). DLC films containing more hydrogen exhibit higher wear resistance. To investigate the roughness effect on wear, the substrates were polished with SiC papers prior to deposition. Too fine or too rough DLC surfaces result in poor wear resistance. Wear resistance of annealed DLC films at higher temperature slightly increases with respect to as-deposited film.

  • Copper (Cu) has been widely used for interconnection structure in intergrated circuits because of its properties such as a low resistance and high resistance to electromigration compared with aluminuim. Damascene processing for the interconnection structure utilizes 2-steps chemical mechanical polishing(CMP). After polishing, the removal of abrasive particles on the surfaces becomes as important as the polishing process. In the paper, buffing process for the removal of colloidal silica from polished Cu wafer was proposed and demonstrated.

  • The biaxial fracture behavior of alumina ceramics was studied using ball-on-3-ball test. The polished surfaces of alumina specimens were indented at 0mm, 1mm, 2mm, 3mm apart from the center of the specimen along path A, passing between the two supporting balls from the center of the specimen, and along path B, passing above the three supporting balls from the center of the specimen. The fracture strength of the indented specimens was measured using the ball-on-3-ball test, a kind of biaxial strength test. The fracture strength increased with increasing the distance from the center to indented position. The fracture strength of the specimen indented along path B was higher than that of the specimens indented along path A. It was presented that the fracture caused by tangential stress rather than radial stress when the indented positions are 1mm and 2mm from the center of the specimen. This phenomenon was in good agreement with FEM analysis.
