Since the oil price has been significantly jumped for several years, a heavy oil of low quality has been mainly used in the diesel engine of the merchant ship. Thus, a combustion chamber of the engine has been often exposed to severely corrosive environment more and more because temperature of the exhaust gas of the combustion chamber has been getting higher and higher with increasing of using the heavy oil of low quality. As a result, wear and corrosion of the engine parts such as exhaust valve, piston crown and cylinder head surrounded with combustion chamber are more serious compared to the other parts of the engine. Therefore, an optimum repair welding for these engine parts is very important to prolong their lifetime in a economical point of view. In this study, Inconel 625 filler metal were welded with GTAW method in the cast steel which would be generally used with piston crown material. And the corrosion properties of weld metal, heat affected and base metal zones were investigated using electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and impedance etc. in 35% $H_2SO_4$ solution. The weld metal and base metal zones exhibited the highest and lowest values of hardness respectively. Furthermore, the corrosion current density of the weld metal zone revealed the lowest value, having the highest value of hardness. The corrosive products with red color and local corrosion like as a pitting corrosion were considerably observed at the base metal zone, while these morphologies were not wholly observed in the weld metal zone. In particular, the polarization characteristics such as impedance, polarization curve and cyclic voltammogran associated with corrosion resistance property were well in good agreement with each other. Consequently, it is suggested that the mechanical and corrosion characteristics of the piston crown can be predominantly improved by repair welding method using the Inconel 625 electrode.
The purpose of this study was to observe characteristic properties through the polarization curves and EMPA images from 4 different types of amalgam obtained by using the potentiostats (EG & G PARC) & EPMA (Jeol JSM-35), to investigate the degree of corrosion of each phase of amalgam on the oxidation peak, and to identify corrosion products from the corroded amalgam by use of X-ray diffractometer(Rigaku). After each amlgam alloy and Hg were triturated as the direction of the manufacturer by means of the mechanical amalgamator(Shofu), the triturated mass was inserted into the cylindrical metal mold which was 12mm in diameter and 10mm in height and was condensed by means of routine manner. The specimen was removed from the mold and stored at room temperature for about 7 days. The standard surface preparation was routinely carried out. Anodic polarization measurement was employed to compare the corrosion behaviours of the amalgams in 0.9% saline solution(pH6.8~7.0) and artificial saliva (pH6.8~7.0) at $37^{\circ}C$. The open circuit potential was determined after 30 minutes' immersion of specimen in electrolyte and the potential scan was begun at the potential of 100mV cathodic from the corrosion potential. The scan rate was 1mV/sec and the surface area of amalgam exposed to the solution was 0.64$cm^2$ for each specimen. All the potentials reported are with respect to a saturated calomel electrode (SCE). EPMA images on the determined oxidation peaks of each amalgam in artificial saliva were observed. X-ray diffraction patterns of each sample were recorded before and after polarization in artificial saliva (Aristaloy, Caulk Spherical, Dispersalloy and Tytin: at +770mV, +585mV, +8.10m V and +680m V respectively) by use of a recording diffractometer. Nickel filtered Cu $K_{{\alpha}_1}$ radiation was used and sample was scanned at $4^{\circ}(2{\theta})/min.$ from $25^{\circ}$ to $80^{\circ}$. The following results were obtained. 1. Oxidation peak potential in artificial saliva shifted to more anodic direction than that in saline solution. 2. The corrosion potential of high copper amalgam was more anodic than the potential of low copper amalgam. 3. The current density was lower in artificial saliva than in saline solution. 4. One of the corrosion products, AgCl was identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. 5. ${\gamma}_2$ phase was the most susceptible to corrosion and e phase was stable in low copper amalgam and ${\eta}$' phase and Ag-Cu eutectic were susceptible to corrosion in high copper amalgam.
The combined use of indium and polysorbate 20 (Tween 20) was considered as a new inhibition technique for zinc corrosion. Zn and Zn-In alloy coatings were prepared by electrodeposition and their morphology and composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The corrosion inhibition effect of indium and Tween 20 on zinc was investigated by polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The corrosion inhibition efficiencies obtained from Tafel and EIS analyses are well in agreement. Zinc corrosion can be inhibited to some extent by the individual use of indium and Tween 20 and higher corrosion inhibition efficiency can be obtained by the combined use of indium and Tween 20.
In this paper, both theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed to examine the effects of key operating parameters on the cell performance of a DMFCs (i.e., methanol feed concentration and operating temperature). For experiment, the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) were prepared using a conventional MEA fabrication method based on a catalyst coated electrode (CCE) and tested under various cell temperatures and methanol feed concentrations. The polarization curve measurements were conducted using in-house-made $25cm^2$ MEAs. The voltage-current density data were collected under three different cell temperatures ($50^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, and $70^{\circ}C$) and four different methanol feed concentrations (1 M, 2 M, 3 M, and 4 M). The experimental data indicate that the measured I-V curves are significantly altered, depending on these conditions. On the other hand, previously developed one-dimensional, two-phase DMFC model is simulated under the same operating conditions used in the experiments. The model predictions compare well with the experimental data over a wide range of these operating conditions, which demonstrates the validity and accuracy of the present DMFC model. Furthermore, both simulation and experimental results exhibit the strong influences of methanol and water crossover rates through the membrane on DMFC performance and I-V curve characteristics.

Cold arc welding of cast iron has been widely used with repair welding of metal structures. However its welding is often resulted in the galvanic corrosion between weld metal zone and heat affected zone(HAZ) due to increasing of hardness. In this study, corrosion properties such as hardness, corrosion potential, surface microstructures, and variation of corrosion current density of welding zone with parameters of used electrodes for cast iron welding were investigated with an electrochemical evaluation. Hardness of HAZ showed the highest value compared to other welding zone regardless of kinds of used electrodes for cast iron welding. And its corrosion potential was also shifted to more negative direction than other welding zone. In addition, corrosion current density of WM in polarization curves was qualitatively smaller than that of HAZ. Therefore galvanic corrosion may be apparently observed at HAZ. However galvanic corrosion may be somewhat controlled by using an optimum welding electrode.
Ferroelectric Sr0.8Bi2.4Ta2O9 stock solutions were prepared by MOD(Metaloganic Decompostion) process. The phase transformation for the layered perovskite of the SBT thin films by changing RTA(Rapid her-mal Annealing) temperatuer from 700$^{\circ}C$to 780$^{\circ}C$ were observed using XRD and SEM. Layered perovskite phase began to appear above 740$^{\circ}C$ and then SBT thin films were annealed at 800$^{\circ}C$ for 1hr for its com-plete crystallization. The specimens showed well shaped hysteresis curves without post annealing that car-ried out after deposition of Pt top electrode. The SBT thin films showed the asymmetric ferroelectric pro-perties. It was confirmed that the properties were caused by interface effect to SBT and electrode by leak-age current density measurement and asymmetric properties reduced by post annealing. At post annealing temperature of 800$^{\circ}C$ remanant polarization values (2Pr) were 6.7 9 ${\mu}$C/cm2 and those of leakage current densities were 3.73${\times}$10-7 1.32${\times}$10-6 A/cm2 at 3, 5V respectively. Also bismuth bonding types of SBT thin film surface were observed by XPS.
In this study, Pt/Pd (1.1), PtPd (2:1) and PtPd (3:1) binary catalysts and Pt/Ru/Pd (5:4:1) ternary catalyst were designed. The catalysts were synthesized by impregnation method using $NaBH_4$ as a reducing agent. A good catalyst for methanol oxidation requires low on-set potential, stable durability and low activation energy. In order to investigate the catalytic activity for the methanol oxidation, electrochemical measurements such as cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were peformed in sulfuric acid with/without methanol solution. In order to calculate the activation energy of the reaction, electrochemical measurements were also tested at different temperatures. For investigation of the structural analysis such as particle size and alloying, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis were used. In order to identify the role of the Pd and to determine the composition of the surface of the Pt/Pd nanoparticles, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was investigated. The XPS spectra of Pd showed that Pd appears only as a metallic state in the binary catalysts. The chemical states of Pt in PtPd catalysts are both metallic and oxidative. Polarization curves and power density data were obtained by testing the DMFC unit cell performance of PtPd and PtRuPd catalysts. These data showed that Pt/Pd (2:1) and Pt/Ru/Pd (5:4:1) have better performance than Pt and Pt/Ru, respectively.

Pb(Zr,Ti)O₃[PZT] thin films were prepared on a highly (100) oriented LaNiO₃[LNO] and a randomly oriented LNO by sol-gel process. The PZT thin films on a highly (100) oriented LNO show a high (100) crystal orientation (F=100 %), those on a randomly oriented LNO show a random crystal orientation (F=60 %). All the PZT layer have a flat and dense microstructure with large columnar grains and their grain size are 25 nm. In the ferroelectric curves at electric field of 40 kV/cm, a highly (100) oriented PZT/LNO samples show coercive field, E/sub c/=10 kV/cm and remanent polarization, P/sub r/=14.5 μC/㎠, while a randomly oriented PZT/LNO sample show E/sub c/=10 kV/cm and P/sub r/=5.4 μC/㎠.

The surface characteristics of Ti/TiN films coated on sintered stainless steels (SSS) by electron beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD) were investigated. Stainless steel compacts containing 2, 4, and 10wt%Cu were prepared by the electroless Cu-plating method, which results in increased homogenization in the alloying powder. The specimens were coated with Ti and TiN with a 1.0$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness respectively by EB-PVD. The microstructures were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The corrosion behaviors were investigated using a potentiosat in 0.1 M $H_2$$SO_4$, and 0.1M HCl solutions and the corrosion surface was observed using SEM and XPS. The Ti coated specimens showed rough surface compared to Ti/TiN coated specimens. Ti and Ti/TiN coated SSS revealed a higher corrosion and pitting potential from anodic polarization curves than that of Ti and Ti/TiN uncoated SSS. In addition, Ti/TiN coated SSS containing 10wt% Cu exhibited good resistance to pitting corrosion due to the formation of a dense film on the surface and the decrease in interconnected porosity by electroless coated Cu.

Electro chemical corrosion tests were conducted on two structural steels, SS400 and SM490A, in various solutions with different pH values, All materials showed typical active corrosion behaviors in the solutions, and corrosion potential and current density were measured from the slopes obtained from the Tafel curves using linear polarization method. Corrosion potential increased in the acidic region and then decreased depending on the pH values of the solutions. All materials showed the fast corrosion rate in artificial acid rain(pH=4.7), but the slower corrosion rate was observed in NaOH solution(pH=12.0) for SS400 and in distilled water(pH=7.0) for SM490A, respectively, which is thought to come from the difference in chemical composition of two alloys. Generally homogeneous corrosion occurred in acid rain condition, and almost no corrosion was observed in distilled water in both alloys. NaOH solution produced more corrosion than distilled water, and more corrosion had progressed in SS400 than in SM490A in $3.5\%$ NaCl solution.
