This work presents an IR-based system for parking assistance and obstacle detection in the automotive field that employs the Microsoft Kinect camera for fast 3D point cloud reconstruction. In contrast to previous research that attempts to explicitly identify obstacles, the proposed system aims to detect "reachable regions" of the environment, i.e., those regions where the vehicle can drive to from its current position. A user-friendly 2D traversability grid of cells is generated and used as a visual aid for parking assistance. Given a raw 3D point cloud, first each point is mapped into individual cells, then, the elevation information is used within a graph-based algorithm to label a given cell as traversable or non-traversable. Following this rationale, positive and negative obstacles, as well as unknown regions can be implicitly detected. Additionally, no flat-world assumption is required. Experimental results, obtained from the system in typical parking scenarios, are presented showing its effectiveness for scene interpretation and detection of several types of obstacle.
Generation of optimum planar B-spline curve in terms of minimum deviation and required fairness to approximate a target shape defined by a strip-shaped unorganized 2D point cloud is studied. It is proposed to use the location of control points as variables within the geometric optimization framework of point distance minimization. An adaptive simulated annealing heuristic optimization algorithm is developed to iteratively update an initial approximate curve towards the target shape. The new implementation comprises an adaptive cooling procedure in which the temperature change is adaptively dependent on the objective function evolution. It is shown that the proposed method results in an improved convergence speed when compared to the standard simulated annealing method. A couple of examples are included to show the applicability of the proposed method in the surface model reconstruction directly from point cloud data.
Presented in the paper is a procedure to reconstruct a triangular mesh from a point cloud. Although, the proposed procedure is based on the well-known Voronoi diagram approach, it introduces a selection method of 'Pole' to improve the quality of resulting mesh. To select the appropriate Poles for high quality of Triangular mesh, the patterns that the Poles affect to the mesh quality are carefully analyzed. It is possible to improve the mesh quality by controlling the selection method of 'Pole' in terms of distance limit. The initial mesh obtained by the proposed procedure may include invalid triangles. To relieve this problem, a slicing method is proposed to remove invalid triangles from the initial mesh. At last, correcting technique of normal vectors of generated mesh is introduced.
In this study, we suggest a new segmentation algorithm for processing airborne laser point cloud data which is more memory efficient and faster than previous approaches. The main principle is the reading of data points along a scan line and their direct classification into homogeneous groups as a single process. The results of our experiments demonstrate that the algorithm runs faster and is more memory efficient than previous approaches. Moreover, the segmentation accuracy is generally acceptable.
In this work continuous thermodynamics was adopted for describing the influence of copolymer polydispersity on phase separations in random copolymer solutions. Continuous themodynamic frameworks were formulated using the Flory-Huggin's excess Gibbs free energy model in which the concentration- and temperature-depentent terms of interaction parameter x were modified. Cloud-point curves and coexistence curves of poly(ethylene-vinylactate)/methylacetate solutions and poly(ehtylene-vinylacetate)/ethylacetate solutions were measured, and experimental data were fitted with theoretical relations formulated in this work. Calculated could-point curves were more good ageeable with experimental data than the modified Flory-Huggins's relations. Coexistence curves which were evaluated by using parameters of x estimated from experimental cloud-point curves, were found to coincide with experimental data.
Laser scanning has become a viable technique for the collection of a large amount of accurate 3D point data densely distributed on the scanned object surface. The inherent 3D nature of the sub-randomly distributed point cloud provides abundant spatial information. To explore valuable spatial information from laser scanned data becomes an active research topic, for instance extracting digital elevation model, building models, and vegetation volumes. The sub-randomly distributed point cloud should be segmented and classified before the extraction of spatial information. This paper investigates some exist segmentation methods, and then proposes an octree-based split-and-merge segmentation method to divide lidar data into clusters belonging to 3D planes. Therefore, the classification of lidar data can be performed based on the derived attributes of extracted 3D planes. The test results of both ground and airborne lidar data show the potential of applying this method to extract spatial features from lidar data.
In recent years, much study has been conducted in robotic grasping. The grasping algorithms based on deep learning have shown better grasping performance than the traditional ones. However, deep learning-based algorithms require a lot of data and time for training. In this study, a grasping algorithm using an artificial neural network-based graspability estimator is proposed. This graspability estimator can be trained with a small number of data by using a neural network based on the residual blocks and point clouds containing the shapes of objects, not RGB images containing various features. The trained graspability estimator can measures graspability of objects and choose the best one to grasp. It was experimentally shown that the proposed algorithm has a success rate of 90% and a cycle time of 12 sec for one grasp, which indicates that it is an efficient grasping algorithm.
