  • More recently, unsteady flow in small-diameter pipes plays a major role in liquid propellantrocket systems, hydraulic and pneumatic control system, and elsewhere. And it has shown that line dynamics can have a marked effect on the hydraulic system characteristics. In this paper, transfer function of hydraulic lines with an accumulator and an outlet orifice is' developed and compared with experimental data from frequency response tests at various airvolume(V.) and the location of accumulator(ld1t), so that their performance may be correctly and easily predicted and the design of the systems incorporating them improved. The obtained results are as follows: 1. The dynamic response of hydraulic lines may be analyzed more accurately by use of the viscous term(22) in unsteady laminar flow. 2. There was good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results of this investigation, and hydraulic systems with liines included an accumulator can be analyzed more accurately by use of the pressure transfer function given by eq. (16). 3. For the mitigation of surge in hydraulic lines, it is more effective that the location ofaccumulator is close to the pipe outlet side. 4. According to the gas volume of accumulator is increased(the sealing pressure is close tomean line pressure), the damping effect of pressure wave is improved.

  • The brake systems of the rolling stocks are generally consisted of electrical and mechanical brake systems. Because of its inherent structure of the each brake system, the electrical brake system is mainly used at the high speed range while the mechanical brake system is used at the relatively lower speed range. It is desirable for the rolling stocks to apply the entire electrical brake system. However, since the brake force from electric brake system is not enough to stop the rolling stock within the legal stop distance. Therefore, the mechanical brake system is indispensable to rolling stocks. In general, the vast majority of the world trains are equipped with mechanical braking systems which use compressed air as the force to push block on to wheels or pads on to discs. These mechanical systems are known as air brake or pneumatic brakes. For the air brake system, basically huge scale air compressor is equipped and the long pipe line is complexively connected. Since mass of these air brake components, it is difficult to be a light weight equipment and the long pipe line raise the maintenance problem. In order to overcome these problems of air brake system, the hydraulic brake system is proposed in this research. The hydraulic brake system makes the whole weight of brake equipment be light and large braking force can be applied. Therefore, in this research, the validity and advantages of applying the hydraulic brake system are reviewed.

  • In this paper, a soft robotic arm which can prevent impact injury during human-robot interaction is introduced. Two degrees of freedom joint are required to realize free movement of the robotic arm. A robotic joint concept with a single degree of freedom is presented using simple inflatable elements, and then extended to form a robotic joint with two degrees of freedom joint using similar manufacturing methods. The robotic joint with a single degree of freedom has a joint angle of $0^{\circ}$ bending angle when both chamber are inflated at equal pressures and maximum bending angles of $28.4^{\circ}$ and $27.1^{\circ}$ when a single chamber if inflated. The robotic joint with two degrees of freedom also has a bending angle of $0^{\circ}$ in both direction when all three chambers are inflated at equal pressures. When either one or two chambers were pressurized, the robotic joint performed bending towards the uninflated chambers.

  • Recently, various AR-based product design methodologies have been introduced. In this paper, we propose technologies for enhancing robust augmentation and immersive realization of virtual objects. A robust augmentation technology is developed for various lighting conditions and a partial solution is proposed for the hand occlusion problem that occurs when the virtual objects overlay the user' hands. It provides more immersive or natural images to the users. Finally, vibratory haptic cues by page motors as well as button clicking force feedback by modulating pneumatic pressures are proposed while interacting with virtual widgets. Also our system reduces gabs between modeling spaces and user spaces. An immersive game-phone model is selected to demonstrate that the users can control the direction of the car in the racing game by tilting a tangible object with the proposed augmented haptic and robust non-occluded visual feedback. The proposed methodologies will be contributed to the immersive realization of the conventional AR system.

  • In this study, a new type of energy absorbers with a functionally graded thickness is investigated, these type of absorbers absorb energy through expanding-folding processes. The expanding-folding absorbers are composed of two sections: a thin-walled aluminum matrix and a thin-walled steel mandrel. Previous studies have shown higher efficiency of the mentioned absorbers compared to the conventional ones. In this study, the effect of thickness which has been functionally-graded on the aluminum matrix (in which expansion occurs) was investigated. To this end, initial functions were considered for the matrix thickness, which was ascending/descending along the axis. The study was done experimentally and numerically. Comparing the experimental data with the numerical results showed high consistency between the numerical and experimental results. In the final section of this study, the best energy absorber functionally graded thickness was introduced by optimization using a third-order genetic algorithm. The optimization results showed that by choosing a minimum thickness of 1.6 mm and the exponential coefficient of 3.25, the most optimal condition can be obtained for descending thickness absorbers.

  • The aim of this study was to establish a breathing assist system for saxophone players with breathing problems. Although the saxophone is a popular wind instrument with a reed in its mouthpiece, it can be difficult for people with breathing problems to play this instrument, as it requires adequate breath support for deep and even long breaths. To solve this problem, the authors propose a breathing assist device, which functions like a pneumatic master-slave amplifier, for saxophone players with breathing problems. First, the proposed device is fabricated. Second, the effectiveness of the breathing assist device as a master-slave amplifier is confirmed through experiments. Third, the dynamic characteristics of the device are tested up to 10 Hz, and they demonstrate that the device responds well for up to approximately 5 Hz.

  • Piping systems play an important role in gas and oil transferring system. In the piping system, there are many elements, such as valves and flow meters. In order to check their normal operating conditions, each signal from each element is displayed on the monitor in the pipe control room. By the way, there are several accidental cases in the piping system even if all signals from the local elements are judged to be normal on the monitor in the control room. Further, opposite cases often happen even the monitor shows abnormal while the local elements work normal. To overcome this abnormal functions, it is not so easy to construct the environment in which sensors detecting the working states of all elements installed in the piping system. In this paper, a new non-contact measurement technique which can calculate the elements' delicate displacements by using a PIV(particle image velocimetry) and diagnose their working states by using a neural network is proposed. The measurement system consists of a host computer, a micro system, a telescope and a high-resolution camera. As a preliminary test, the constructed measurement system was applied to measure delicate vibrations of mobile phones. For practical application, a pneumatic system was measured by the constructed system.

  • Many studies have examined robot control using human bio signals but complicated signal processing and expensive hardware are necessary. This study proposes a method to recognize a human's hand motion using a low-cost EMG sensor and Flex sensor. The method to classify movement of the hand and finger is determined from the change in output voltage measured through MCU. The analog reference voltage is determined to be 3.3V to increase the resolution of movement identification through experiment. The robotic hand is designed to realize the identified movement. The hand has four fingers and a wrist that are controlled using pneumatic cylinders and a DC servo motor, respectively. The results show that the proposed simple method can realize human hand motion in a remote environment using the fabricated robotic hand.
