  • A robust adaptive technique for the longitudinal control of a platoon of automated vehicles is presented. A nonlinear model is used to represent the vehicle dynamics of each vehicle within the platoon. The external disturbance such as wind gust and a disturbance term due to engine transmission variations and so on are considered. The state observer is used to avoid direct measurement of the relative velocity or acceleration between the controlled and leading vehicles or the controlled vehicle's acceleration. It is shown that platoon stability can be recovered in operation even if a speed dependent spacing policy is adopted, which incorporates a constant time headway in addition to the constant distance. The simulation results demonstrate excellent tracking even in the presence of disturbances.

  • This study developed a methodology that can reflect more realistic traffic flow to understand platoons on highways. The understanding of the phenomenon nay secure highway safety and authoritative credibility in highway planning. In this study platoons generated by 'random effects' of cars are modeled, and this model is validated using a real data set acquired from the Jayu Expressway in Kyonggi Province, Korea.

  • Platooning of vehicles is an efficient traffic management model that improves traffic flow and fuel consumption. Especially, it is necessary to reduce computational load and networking overhead in automated connected vehicle systems. Because it is important to maintain the size of the platoon group appropriately for efficient platoon operation, this study proposed a dynamic grouping scheme for platooning in an automated vehicle system. The proposed scheme is analyzed by a mathematical model based on Markov chain. From the performance evaluation, it was confirmed that the proposed scheme appropriately controls the size of the platoon group.

  • Vehicle platooning through wireless communication and automated driving technology has become realized. Platooning is a technique in which several vehicles travel at regular intervals while maintaining a minimum safety distance. Truck platooning is of keen interest because it contributes to preventing truck crashes and reducing vehicle emissions, in addition to the increase in truck flow capacity. However, it should be noted that interactions between vehicle platoons and adjacent manually-driven vehicles (MV) significantly give an impact on the performance of traffic flow. In particular, when vehicles entering from on-ramp attempt to merge into the mainstream of freeway, proper interactions by adjusting platoon size and inter-platoon spacing are required to maximize traffic performance. This study developed a methodology for establishing operational strategies for truck platoonings on freeway on-ramp areas. Average speed and conflict rate were used as measure of effectiveness (MOE) to evaluate operational efficiency and safety. Microscopic traffic simulation experiments using VISSIM were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various platooning scenarios. A decision making process for selecting better platoon operations to satisfy operations and safety requirements was proposed. It was revealed that a platoon operating scenario with 50m inter-platoon spacing and the platoon consisting of 6 vehicles outperformed other scenarios. The proposed methodology would effectively support the realization of novel traffic management concepts in the era of automated driving environments.

  • In this paper, we present a remote control strategy for vehicles moving in an intelligent Vehicle Highway System(IVHS). We study a method for optimal off-line scheduling of a limited communication channel that is used for lead vehicle control in a platoon. The deviated distance from the desired trajectory is used for defining a cost functional that measures the performance of the system with communication constraints in relation to the desired system without communication constraints. The optimal communication sequence is obtained by simulations.

  • It has been employed TRANSYT-7F and NETSIM to evaluate the validity and effectiveness of improvement on TSM(Transportation Systems Management). But T7F is hard to describe platoon compression and dispersion in actually, and NETSIM takes a long time for network coding, calibration and have difficulty in setting up saturation flow. While Shockwave Model have advantage which can describe platoon compression and dispersion in actually and shorten hours, convenience of application. But Shockwave Model apply unrealistic traffic flow relation ship(U-K curve) and simplify platoon because of difficulty in calculating shockwave's position and cross. For solving limitation of existing shockwave models, It develop new model with 2-regime linear model, New platoon model, Extended shockwave, etc. For verifying the validity of the proposed model, it was compared with delay of T7F and NETSIM by offset variation. In conclusion, it is thought that proposed model have outstanding performance to simulate traffic phenomenon.

  • The ubiquitous transportation system environments make it possible to collect each vehicle's position and velocity data and to perform more sophisticated traffic flow management at individual vehicle or platoon level through V2V and V2I communications. The VISSIM simulation experiments were performed to address the issues in developing the preventive congestion management algorithm proposed in the companion paper. Traffic flow stability measures were developed based on the platoon profile, which enables us to explicitly consider traffic flow stability in traffic flow management. Traffic flow management strategies according to the traffic flow states were proposed: Maintain the equilibrium speed for free flow state, maintain the traffic flow stability by platoon control for critical state, and surpress the shock wave propagation for congested state. And finally potential benefit of the proposed traffic flow management scheme was evaluated based on the simulation experiment results. It is considered that extensive field experiments should be performed to confirm the simulated results.

  • To improve traffic congestion, reduce fuel consumption, and improve the stability of truck operations, truck platooning, in which several trucks are organized in a single platoon, is being actively researched globally. Compared to the operation of a single truck, the operation of a truck platoon requires more caution before the actual operation because an accident of one vehicle in the platoon can lead to an accident with all the vehicles in the platoon. Therefore, this study examined the types of trucks and cargo suitable for truck platooning to prevent safety accidents. The review showed that a closed-van-type truck is appropriate for truck platooning to prevent falling objects during driving. In the case of cargo types, it is necessary to exclude liquids and dangerous goods defined in related laws from truck platooning.
