  • The reinforced concrete flat plate system provides architectural flexibility, clear space, reduced building height, simple formwork, which consequently enhance constructibility. One of the serious problem in the flat plate system is brittle punching shear failure due to transfer of shear force and unbalanced moments in column-slab connection. Since the use of high strength concrete recently has become in practice for reinforced concrete structures, it is highly desired to establish the structural design method for flat plate construction using high strength concrete. In this paper, interior column-slab connection constructed with high strength concrete were tested under lateral and gravity loads to evaluate their strength and behavior. The test parameters were slab reinforcement ratio and the gravity load levels.

  • This paper is to study the response of flat plate slab-column connections consisting of various types of shear reinforcement and steel plate subjected to gravity loadings, mainly punching shear forces using the non-destructive testing, spectral analysis of surface waves and structural experiments. The base specimen failed due to punching shear generated from the gravity. The three other types of slab shear reinforcement and steel plate showed effective in resisting punching shear for these types of connections under gravity loading. This study has focused in evaluating the velocity response of a Surface wave during the early age as the poured concrete specimens have been hardened, the possibility of damage detection in the slab-column connection and the relationship between the punching shear forces and the surface wave velocities under the condition that the punching shear forces had gradually increased until the flat plate slab in slab-column connection had been failed.

  • Main topics in this study is a new structural detail for connection between H-Steel or SRC column and flat plate slab. We carried out to evaluate the punching shear performance of H-steel or SRC column + RC slab system for vertical load and lateral load. From the test results structural characteristics - yield moment, yield rotation, maximum moment, deformation capabilities ect. - are obtained and evaluated. In this paper as a shear reinforcement for supporting region of plate closed stirrup type and shear band are used, and their test results are compared.

  • This paper systematically investigated the mechanical performance of the weak-axis cover-plate connection, including a beam end monotonic loading test and a column top cyclic loading test, and a series of parametric studies for exterior and interior joints under cyclic loading using a nonlinear finite element analysis program ABAQUS, focusing on the influences of the shape of top cover-plate, the length and thickness of the cover-plate, the thickness of the skin plate, and the steel material grade. Results showed that the strains at both edges of the beam flange were greater than the middle's, thus it is necessary to take some technical methods to ensure the construction quality of the beam flange groove weld. The plastic rotation of the exterior joint can satisfy the requirement of FEMA-267 (1995) of 0.03 rad, while only one side connection of interior joint satisfied ANSI/AISC 341-10 under the column top cyclic loading. Changing the shape or the thickness or the length of the cover-plate did not significantly affect the mechanical behaviors of frame joints no matter in exterior joints or interior joints. The length and thickness of the cover-plate recommended by FEMA 267 (1995) is also suitable to the weak-axis cover-plate joint. The minimum skin plate thickness and a design procedure for the weak-axis cover-plate connections were proposed finally.

  • The prediction of the low cycle fatigue (LCF) life of beam-column connections requires an LCF model that is developed using specific geometric information. The beam-column connection has several geometric variables, and changes in these variables must be taken into account to ensure sufficient robustness of the design. Previous research has verified that the finite element model (FEM) can be used to simulate LCF behavior at the end plate moment connection (EPMC). Three critical parameters, i.e., end plate thickness, beam flange thickness, and bolt distance, have been selected for this study to determine the geometric effects on LCF behavior. Seven FEMs for different geometries have been developed using these three critical parameters. The finite element analysis results have led to the development of a modified LCF model for the critical parameter groups.

  • This paper summarizes full-scale gravity-load test results on CFT column-to-RC flat plate connections reinforced with shearhead. CFT construction has many structural and constructional advantages over conventional steel and RC column construction and is gaining wide acceptance. Meanwhile the use of RC flat plate system in the basement and residential floors of tall buildings is often mandatory to reduce story height and enable rapid construction in domestic practice. Combining CFT column and flat plate floor is expected to result in further rapid construction. However, the issues related to connecting CFT column to RC flat plate have not been fully addressed yet. Several promising connecting schemes by using steel shearhead were proposed and tested in this study. Test results showed that the proposed connection can exhibit the punching shear strength higher than RC flat plate counterparts. An empirical formula that can reasonably predicts the punching shear strength of the proposed connection was also proposed.

  • This study propose cutting body portion-high strength mechanical fasteners to improve deformation capacity of High strength bolts, which are the mechanical fasteners used for End-plate connections. And, we report that loading test results of steel beam-to-column connection using high deformation capacity-high strength bolts in accordance with SAC2000 loading program. As a result, the initial stiffness and the maximum strength of the connection using high deformation capacity-high strength bolts, are approximately the same in comparison with those of the end-plate connection using the existing high strength bolts. But the deformation capacity of the connection is more than twice as much as those.

  • The purpose of this research was focused on substantiating an effects of tendon-layouts and compressed stress($=f_{pc}$) induced by post-tensioning on seismic performance of post-tensioned flat plate slab-column connection designed as non-participating system. To accomplish this purpose, an experimental research of flat plate exterior slab-column connections subjected to gravity load and reversed lateral displacement history are presented. As a result, tendon-layout is a main variable to influence failure mechanism, dissipated energy and lateral deformation capacity. Furthermore, compressed stress ($=f_{pc}$) induced by post-tensioning enhanced the seismic performance of flat plate slab.

  • This study has been motivated to evaluate the practicality of numerical simulation of impedance monitoring for damage detection in steel column connection. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, the theory of electro-mechanical (E/M) impedance responses and impedance-based damage monitoring method are outlined. Secondly, the feasibility of numerical simulation of impedance monitoring is verified for several pre-published experimental examples on steel beams, cracked aluminum beams, and aluminum round plates. Undamaged and damaged steel and aluminum beams are simulated to compare to experimental impedance responses. An aluminum round plate with PZT patch in center is simulated to investigate sensitive range of impedance responses. Finally, numerical simulation of the impedance-based damage monitoring is performed for a steel column connection in which connection bolts are damaged. From the numerical simulation test, the applicability of the impedance-based monitoring to the target steel column connection can be evaluated.

  • Flat plate structures under lateral load are susceptible to the brittle shear failure of plate-column connection. To prevent such brittle failure, strength and ductility of the connection should be ensured. However, according to previous studies, current design methods do not accurately estimate the strength of plate-column connection. In the present study, parametric study using nonlinear finite element analysis was performed for interior connections. Based on the numerical results, a design method for the connection was developed. At the critical sections around the connection coexist flexural moment and shear developed by lateral and gravity loads, and maximum allowable eccentric shear stresses were proposed based on the interactions between the flexural moment and shear, The proposed method can precisely predict the strength of the connection, compared with the current design provisions. The predictability of the proposed method was verified by the comparisons with existing experiments and nonlinear numerical analyses.
