  • In this study, a plastic bottle recycling bin system that utilizes an infrared sensor was implemented. The proposed system consists of a recognition unit, a control unit, an alarm unit, and a driving unit. The recognition unit detects the plastic bottle, measures the distance between the plastic bottle and the infrared sensor, extracts the value of the bottle, compares the extracted value with a standard range, and then transmits the control value to the control unit if the extracted value of the bottle is outside the standard range. In this case, the result of the presence or absence of a brand label or bottle cap is transmitted to the controller. The control unit opens the entrance of the recycling bin or alerts the alarm unit according to the result value transmitted from the sensor unit. In order to implement the proposed system, the recognition unit was implemented with an infrared sensor, and the control unit was made with an Arduino IDE controller, based on the C programming language. Additionally, the recognition unit and the control unit are able to communicate using analog signals. The proposed system accurately judges the presence or absence of a brand label and bottle cap of plastic bottles according to a predetermined algorithm. It then blocks the entrance of the recycling bin when a brand label or bottle cap is still attached. As the amount of waste discharged per person is relatively high and the majority of such waste is incinerated rather than recycled, the system proposed in this study is expected to increase the recycling rate of plastic bottles.

  • The purpose this study was to analyze the factors related to the disposal behavior of college students in recycling resources. Recycling resources were classified into four categories: paper, glass, cans and plastic. The data used this study were collected through questionnaire on 420 college students living in Jeju island. The data were analyzed by using SPSS WIN program and the methods of frequency, average, standard deviation, percentage, internal consistency method, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe's multiple range tests. The study results can be summarized as follows. Disposal behavior of paper was influenced by pocket money, of glass by sex and housing type, and of cans by housing type. Mother's education level was related to the disposal behavior of college students in recycling resources. In addition, the results showed that environment-friendly conscious and purchasing behaviors affected the disposal behavior of college students in recycling the resources of paper, glass, cans and plastic. The environment-friendly consciousness of college students was the most influential factor in the disposal behavior in recycling resources.

  • It is widely known that agricultural plastic waste incineration by farmers may cause big forest fire or fine dust in rural areas. Hence, how to increase the rate of collection and recycling of the agricultural plastic waste is of concern to policy makers especially for rural environment. The purpose of this study is to find the determinants of the collection rate of agricultural plastic waste. This study used the data from 'Research on Agricultural Waste' by the Korea Environment Corporation from year 2012 to 2015 for 163 regions. This study found that the compensation rate for collection, the frequency of collecting services, and the quality of waste are important to increase the collection rate. And the regions with more elderly and low income people are more likely to have higher collection rate. Finally, the chief producing regions that are specialized in a certain crop shows higher collection rate.

  • Due to the environmental problem caused by plastics largely used in various fields, the importance of recycling is being emphasized. A research on material separation of ABS and PS mixed plastic waste, using a triboelectrostatic separator, was carried out for recovery the ABS. As a results of research on charging characteristic for choosing charging material, it was confirmed that ABS was optimum charging material for a tribo-charger in the material separation of ABS and PS. In the material separation using ABS charger, ABS grade of 99.5% and recovery of 92.5% were achieved at 20 kV, splitter position +2 cm from the center and 30% relative humidity. Therefore, material separation technique for recycling ABS and PS mixed plastic waste was established.

  • Since most of the waste plastics are incinerated and landfilled for the plastic treatment, the environmental friendly processes must be introduced. The plastic utilization of plastic to the blast furnace as a substitutional fuel was developed as a useful recycling method of waste plastics, and commercialized in several ironmaking company in Europe and Japan. Present study was carried out to understand the effect of plastic injection on blast furnace process continuously by using the foundry blast furnace in POSCO. The coke replacement ratio turned out to be 0.98 with the waste plastic injection up to 13.8 kg/thm of injection rate, and there were no significant effect of the kinds of injection plastics on the replacement ratio in this test operation. The permeability in the furnace became worse and the heat load in the lower part of blast furnace was increased with increasing the injection rate of waste plastics. As the rate of plastic injection were increased, the top gas utilization and shaft efficiency were also decreased from the Rist diagram analysis.

  • This article portrays the authors' clinical experience of a complex case of lower extremity reconstruction using a recycled pedicle from 10 years old free latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap to supply a new free anterolateral thigh flap for proximal tibia wound defect reconstruction. It provides clinical evidence that muscle neovascularization occurs and supports the dogma peripheral tissue neovascularization. This case stipulates that recycling of pedicle is feasible, when used with appropriate strategy and safety and also provides evidence for the long-term survival of greater saphenous vein grafts in lower extremity reconstruction.

  • This study was conducted in order to remove Poly vinyl chloride(PVC) from the waste plastic film mixture. The fittings of Air Table was modified to increase the separation efficiency of PVC and PE(poly ethylene). PE and PVC was successfully separated from PVC-PE film mixture with the yield of PE 90% or more and with his grade of 99% or more, using the improved Air Table. The details of the separation condition and results will be discussed in this paper. Dry separation, Waste plastic film, PVC, Air Table. The details of the separation condition and results will be discussed in this paper.

  • Small household appliances such as electric rice cooker, a vacuum cleaner, an electric fan, etc. are diverse and complex due to the materials and components and waste streams from the manufacturing processes. In the present study, physical characterization of small e-wastes was analyzed on major items including electric rice cooker after manual dismantling. Small household appliances is an important potential source of waste plastic, however, recycling plastics from small e-waste is still unusual. The present communication gives results of separation processes on black plastics and the limitations of these sorting processes in used small household appliances.
