  • The separation of gallium and indium from the matrix elements such as zinc and other ions, especially form Fe(III) ion was studied for the determination of trace level of them in zinc ores and zinc blendes by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES). Gallium and indium were extracted from the sample solution with a solvent of tributyl phosphate(TBP). The type and concentration of acid, interferences of other ions, the ratio of aqueous phase to organic phase, TBP concentration, sripping efficiency were optimized for the effective extraction. Gallium and indium were separated from other ions in the 5N hydrochloric acid solution of the samples by the extraction with 100% TBP. In this time, Fe(III) was reduced to Fe(II) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to prevent its coextraction prior to the main extraxtion. After stripped from organic phase by the back-extraction with 0.02N HCl, they were determined in the aqueous phase by ICP-AES. This method was known to be quantitative from the overall extraction of more than 95%.

  • Electrical, optical, and structural properties of indium zinc oxide (IZO) films grown by a box cathode sputtering (BCS) were investigated as a function of oxygen flow ratio. A sheet resistance of $42.6{\Omega}/{\Box}$, average transmittance above 88% in visible range, and root mean spare roughness of $2.7{\AA}$ were obtained even in the IZO layers grown at room temperature. In addition, it is shown that electrical characteristics of the top-emitting organic light emitting diodes (TOLEDs) with the BCS grown-IZO top cathode layer is better than that of TOLEDs with DC sputter grown IZO top cathode, due to absence of plasma damage effect. Furthermore the effects of oxygen flow ratio in IZO films are investigated, based on x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultra violet/visible (UV/VIS) spectro-meter, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis results.

  • To solve low cycle efficiency of the zinc anode in Zn-air batteries by corrosion, this study examined the effects of Al as a cathodic protection additive to Zn. The Al-mixed Zn anodes were produced by mixing Zn and Al powder (1, 2, and 3 wt. %). To compare the effects of the Al additive, Si was selected under the same conditions. The morphology and elemental composition of the additives in the Zn were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry. The anti-corrosion effects of the Al and Si-mixed Zn anodes were examined by linear polarization. Cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge tests were conducted to evaluate the electrochemical performance of the Al and Si-mixed Zn anodes. As a result, the Al-mixed Zn anodes showed highest corrosion resistance and cycling performance. Among these, the 2 wt.% Al-mixed Zn anodes exhibited best electrochemical performance.

  • We prepared indium zinc oxide (IZO) thin film for cathode electrode such as an application of flat panel display by using the facing targets sputtering (FTS) method at room temperature. The effects of input power and film thickness were investigated with respect to physical and optical properties of films such as deposition rate, electrical properties, microstructure and transmittance. We could obtain properties of IZO thin films of under $10^{-3}\;{\Omega}-cm$ in resistivity and the thin films of over 90% in transmittance. Also, we obtained IZO thin films which were an amorphous structure.

  • C-axis oriented zinc oxide thin films were deposited on glass substrate by reactive Facing Targets Sputtering (FTS) system. The characteristics of zinc oxide thin films on power, inter targets distance, and substrate temperature were investigated by XRD(x-ray diffractometer), alphastep (Tencor) analyses. The Facing Targets Sputtering system can deposit thin film in plasma-free situation and change the deposition condition in wide range. The excellently c-axis oriented zinc oxide thin films were obtained at sputter pressure 1mTorr, sputtering current 0.4A, substrate temperature $300^{\circ}C$, inter targets distance 100mm. In the conditions, the rocking curve of zinc oxide thin films deposited on ZnO/Glass was $3.9^{\circ}$.

Influence of Plasma Discharge Power on the Electrical and Optical Properties of Aluminum Doped Zinc Oxide Thin Films

  • Al-doped ZnO (AZO) thin films were grown on type of glass#1737 substrates by DC magnetron sputtering. The structural, electrical and optical properties of the films were investigated as a function of various plasma discharge power. The obtained films were polycrystalline with a hexagonal wurtzite structure and preferentially oriented in the (002) crystallographic direction. The lowest resistivity was $6.0{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ with the carrier concentration of $2.69{\times}10^{20}cm^{-3}$ and Hall mobility of 20.43 $cm^2/Vs$. The average transmittance in the visible range was above 90%.

Increased Serum Leptin Levels and Leptin mRNA Gene Expression by Zinc Depletion in Rats

  • Zinc deficiency has been shown to result in poor appetite, causing anorexia. However, the role of zinc in the regulation of food intake is not well understood. In the present study, we hypothesized that zinc deficiency dysregulates circulating leptin level and leptin mRNA gene expression, and that whether these changes were occuring as a direct result of, or as a compensatory effect of zinc deficiency in rats. After an adaptation period of 4 weeks, Sprague Dawley rats were provided with three different level of zinc, as one week of a Zn-adequate (30 mg/kg) diet, then two weeks of a Zn-depletion (1 mg/kg ), and finally by two weeks of a Zn-repletion (50 mg/kg) diet. At the end of each dietary experimental period, one third of the 26 rats were killed. Zinc levels of blood subfractions (plasma, yee blood cells and mononuclear cells) and in the liver were substantially decreased, despite the fact that food intake was not substantially decreased during the Zn-depletion period. Serum leptin concentration was significantly increased during the zinc depletion period. Leptin mRNA in adipose tissue was also shown to be highly expressed during the Zn-depletion period. Presumably, increased leptin level and leptin mRNA induction during Zn-depletion conditions may be the cause of lowered appetite which is the common symptom of Zn-deficiency. In conclusion, These increases in circulating leptin levels and in leptin gene expression would be the direct result of, rather than the compensatory effect of, zinc deficiency.

The Copper, Cobalt, Iron, Selenium and Zinc Status of Cattle in the Sanyati and Chinamhora Smallholder Grazing Areas of Zimbabwe

  • The trace mineral status of cattle in the smallholder grazing areas of Sanyati and Chinamhora in Zimbabwe was evaluated during the rainy and dry seasons of 1994 and 1995. The evaluation was done in terms of mineral concentration in blood plasma. Plasma copper in calves, steers and cows in the dry season was; Sanyati: 0.55, 0.59, and 0.61; Chinamhora: 0.59, 0.58, and $0.60{\mu}g/ml$, respectively versus a normal of $0.65{\mu}g/ml$. In the rainy season, copper was deficient at both sites (averaging $0.56{\mu}g/ml$ and $0.59{\mu}g/ml$ at Sanyati and Chinamhora, respectively). Plasma selenium in the dry season was 0.017, 0.025, and $0.017{\mu}g/ml$ for calves, steers and cows, respectively at Sanyati versus a normal of $0.03{\mu}g/ml$ and therefore considered to be deficient. Iron, zinc and cobalt were found to be generally high and therefore unlikely to be deficient. Copper and selenium are recommended in salt licks in these environments.

Development and Validation of a Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry Method for the Determination of ε-Acetamidocaproic Acid in Rat Plasma

  • A simple and rapid liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the quantification of ${\varepsilon}$-acetamidocaproic acid (AACA), the primary metabolite of zinc acexamate (ZAC), in rat plasma by using normetanephrine as an internal standard. Sample preparation involved protein precipitation using methanol. Separation was achieved on a Gemini-NX $C_{18}$ column ($150mm{\times}2.0mm$, i.d., 3 ${\mu}m$ particle size) using a mixture of 0.1% formic acid-water : acetonitrile (80 : 20, v/v) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 200 ${\mu}l/min$. Quantification was performed on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer employing electrospray ionization and operating in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) and positive ion mode. The total chromatographic run time was 4.0 min, and the calibration curves of AACA were linear over the concentration range of 20~5000 ng/ml in rat plasma. The coefficient of variation and relative error at four QC levels were ranged from 1.0% to 5.8% and from -8.4% to 6.6%, respectively. The present method was successfully applied for estimating the pharmacokinetic parameters of AACA following intravenous or oral administration of ZAC to rats.
