Fabrication of Prototype vuv Spectrometer & Liquid Target System Containing Hydrogen

  • The vuv spectrometer for ITER main plasma measurement is designed as a five-channel spectral system. To develop and verify the design, a two-channel prototype system was fabricated with No. 3 (14.4-31.8 nm) and No. 4 (29.0-60.0 nm) among the five channels. For test of the prototype system, a hollow cathode lamp is used as a light source. The system is composed of a collimating mirror to collect the light from source to slit, and two holographic diffraction gratings with toroidal geometry to diffract and also to collimate the light from the common slit to detectors. The overall system performance was verified by comparing the measured spectral resolutions with the calculated spectral resolutions. And we also have developed liquid jet target system. This study is about a neutron generator, which is designed to overcome many of the limitations of traditional beam-target neutron generators by utilizing a liquid target. One of the most critical aspects of the beam-target neutron generator is the target integrity under the beam exposure. A liquid target can be a good solution to overcome damage to the target such as target erosion and depletion of hydrogen isotopes in the active layer, especially for the ones operating at high neutron fluxes and maintained relatively thin with no need for water cooling. In this study, liquid target containing hydrogen has been developed and tested.

Plasma Concentrations of Vitamins E and A, and Effects of Vitamin E Supplementation on Oxidative Stress and Immune Status in Korean Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetic Patients

  • Plasma concentrations of Vitamins E and A were measured in 15 non-insulin dependent Korean female subjects and 15 age-matched normal subjects using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. No differences were found in plasma Vitamin E concentrations between the 2 groups. Plasma Vitamin A concentrations were higher in subjects with non-insulin dependent diabetes melitus (NIDDM). The effects were evaluated of 4 weeks of daily supplementation of 400 mg Vitamin E on plasma levels of these two vitamins. In addition, the effects were observed for Vitamin E supplementation on oxidative stress and immune-related compound productions in non-insulin dependent diabetic patients and control subjects. After treatment with Vitamin E, plasma Vitamin E concentrations were significantly elevated in both groups. Basal plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBABS) were identical, and a decreased level of TBARS caused by Vitamin E was observed only in the diabetic group (0.02739$\pm$0.0024 versus 0.01814$\pm$0.0008 nmols malondialdehyde equivalents/dl plasma ; p<0.05). The basal and after-treatment levels of immunoglobulins A, G, M were identical in control and diabetic groups, indicating that Vitamin E did not appear to alter gross humoral responses in this study. However, elevation of Complement 3 ($C_3$) was noticed due to Vitamin E supplementation, revealing a possible effect of vitamin E on one aspect of humoral immunity, Furthermore, an increase in prostaglandin E_2 ($PGE_2$) levels in diabetic patients was normalized by Vitamin E supplementation. This suggests indirectly that the depressed cell-mediated response due to elevated $PGE_2$ could be normalized. For the definitive antioxidant intake recommendations for prevention and treatment of adverse effects of non-insulin dependent diabetes, evidence from intervention trials like this study should be collected. The present data suggests that Vitamin E may oxen some protective effects against oxidative damage and might have beneficial effects of partial immune-stimulation.

  • Achiral-chiral column switching HPLC assay was developed to allow the separation and quantification of the enantiomers of terbutaline in human plasma by means of fluorescence detection. Plasma samples were prepared by solid-phase extraction with sep-pak silica, followed by HPLC assay. The enantiomers of terbutaline and the internal standard were separated from the biological matrix on a silica column, and the two enantiomers were resolved and quantified on a Sumichiral OA-4900 column. The two columns were connected by a switching valve equipped with silica trap column, The trap column was used to concentrate the terbutaline in the eluent from the achiral column before back flushing onto the chiral phase. For each enantiomers, the assay was linear between 2.5-125 ng/$m\ell$ (r=0.9999) and detection limit was 1.0 ng/$m\ell$ .

  • To study the pharmacokinetics of triflusal, more reliable and sensitive analytical method of triflusal in plasma sample was developed. Analytical method of triflusal in human plasma was developed using semi-microbore HPLC equipped with automated column switching system. p- Toluic acid, which is structural analogue of triflusal. was used as an internal standard and 2 M HCI was employed as a stabilizer.   • We have investigated the breakdown properties in liquids by high voltage pulse system. High voltage pulse power system is consisted of the Marx-generator with two capacitors (0.5 ${\mu}F$, withstanding voltage is 40 kV), to which the charging voltage can be applied to maximum 30 kV DC, spark gap switch and charging resistor of 20 $M{\Omega}$. We have made use of tungsten pin electrodes of anode-cathode (A-K), which are immersed into the liquids. The breakdown voltage and current signals are measured by high voltage probe (Tektronix P6015A) and current monitor (IPC CM-1.S). Especially the high speed breakdown or plasma propagation characteristics in the pulsed A-K gap have been investigated by using the high speed ICCD camera. We have measured the electron temperature through the Boltzmann plot method from the breakdown spectrums. Here the A-K gap has been changed by 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm. The used liquids are distilled water and solution of salt (0.9 %). The output voltage and current signals at breakdown in distilled water are shown to be bigger than those in saline solution. The breakdown voltage and current characteristics in liquids will be discussed in accordance with A-K gap distances. It is also found that the electron temperatures and plasma densities in liquids are decreased in conformity with A-K gap.

  • Crystallization behavior of the bulk metallic glass (BMG) during compression and tension was studied in the supercooled liquid region (SLR). Rod samples of the BMG alloy were produced by consolidating gas atomized powders of $Cu_{54}Zr_{22}Ti_{18}Ni_6$ using spark plasma sintering. The crystallization behavior in these samples was examined by tackling changes in thermal property during heating the samples in DSC. The present BMG alloy was firstly decomposed and then crystallized during annealing in the SLR. The phase decomposition from the original amorphous phase was retarded by the compressive stress, while it was accelerated by the tensile stress.

  • To increase the ink transfer rate in the micro-gravure-offset printing, the liquid transfer process between two separating plates is investigated. During the liquid transfer process, in which one plate is fixed and the other one moves vertically, a sessile droplet is separated into two droplets. The volume ratio of the two droplets depends on the contact angles of the two plates. In a numerical study of the ink transfer processes, liquid transfer between two parallel separating plates and between a trapezoidal cavity and an upward moving plate are simulated, as models of the printing of ink from the offset pad onto the substrate and the picking up of ink from the gravure plate by the offset pad, respectively. Also, in experimental study, to obtain various surface contact angles, chemical treatment, plasma treatment, and electrowetting- on-dielectric (EWOD) surface are considered. The transfer rate between two plates is calculated by analyzing the droplet images. From the results, the optimal surface contact angles of the units of the micro-gravure-offset printing can be characterized.

  • A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (LC/MS/MS) method for the determination of tiropramide in human plasma was developed. Tiropramide and internal standard, cisapride were extracted from human plasma with MTBE at basic pH.
