  • Space and time resolved discharge images from an atmospheric pressure non-thermal Ar plasma jet have been observed by a ICCD camera to investigate the electron temperatures. Plasma jet device consisting of a syringe electrode inserted into a glass tube has been introduced. A high voltage is applied to the syringe electrode. The syringe needle has an outer diameter of 1.8 mm, an inner diameter of 1.3 mm, and a total length of 39.0 mm. The needle is inserted into a glass tube of outer diameter 2.4 mm and inner diameter 2.0 mm, and a total length of 80.0 mm. The Ar plasma propagation speed on the cathode has been shown to be about 2.1 km/s at input discharge voltage of 3.6 kV, discharge current of 19.9 mA and driving frequency of about 45 kHz. Particularly, the electron temperature in plasma jet were found to be about 1.8 eV at input discharge voltage of 3.6 kV and driving frequency of 45 kHz, respectively.

  • Tri-acetyl-cellulose(TAC) film surface was modified by atmospheric-pressure plasma technique to obtain the hydrophilic functional groups and improve the contact angle. TAC film was modified with N2 plasma ionized in dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) reactor under atmospheric pressure. We measured the change of the contact angle and the surface energy with respect to the plasma treatment conditions such as plasma treatment power, discharge gap and N2 gas flow rate. As the plasma treatment speed of 100[mm/sec], the plasma treatment power of 1.5[kW], discharge gap 2[mm] and the $N_2$ gas flow rate 140[LPM], the best contact angle and the highest surface energy were obtained. The degree of hydrophilization depended strongly on the plasma-treating time and discharge power.

  • We have studied on plasma diagnosis, characteristics of the glow discharge at the several different conditions of pressure, discharge current and such. The discharge onset voltage and onset current decreased as pressure increase, the general trend was nearly in agreement with the left regions of Paschen's curve. As normal glow discharge, discharge voltage was constant according to discharge current.

  • Discharge property of plasma jet devices is investigated for the application to the doping processes of crystalline solar cells and others. Current-voltage characteristics are shown as the typical normal-glow discharge in the various gas pressure of plasma jets, such as in the atmospheric plasma jets of Ar-discharge, in the ambient pressure of atmospheric discharge, and in the ambient Ar-pressure of Ar-discharge. The discharge voltage of atmospheric plasma jet is required as low as about 2.5 kV while the operation voltage of low pressure below 200 Torr is low as about 1 kV in the discharge of atmospheric and Ar plasma jets. With a single channel plasma jet, the irradiated plasma current on the doped silicon wafer is obtained high as the range of 10~50 mA. The temperature increasement of wafer is normally about $200^{\circ}C$. In the result of silicon wafers doped by phosphoric acid with irradiating the plasma jets, the doping profiles of phosphorus atoms shows the possibility of plasma jet doping on solar cells.

  • This study investigated the degradation of N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicator of the generation of OH radical) by using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. The DBD plasma reactor of this study consisted of a quartz dielectric tube, titanium discharge (inner) and ground (outer) electrode. The effect of shape (rod, spring and pipe) of ground electrode, diameter (9~30 mm) of ground electrode of spring shape and inside diameter (4~13 mm) of quartz tube, electrode diameter (1~4 mm), electrode materials (SUS, Ti, iron, Cu and W), height difference of discharge and ground electrode (1~15.5 cm) and gas flow rate (1~7 L/min) were evaluated. The experimental results showed that shape of ground electrode and materials of ground and discharge electrode were not influenced the RNO degradation. The thinner the diameter of discharge and ground electrode, the higher RNO degradation rate observed. The effect of height gap of discharge between ground electrode on RNO degradation was not high within the experimented value. Among the experimented parameters, inside diameter of quartz tube and gas flow rate were most important parameters which are influenced the decomposition of RNO. Optimum inside diameter of quartz tube and gas flow rate were 7 mm and 4 L/min, respectively.

  • The electro-optical characteristics of several functional layers over the MgO protective layer were studied during the continuous discharge of an AC-PDP. In order to observe the degradation of each functional layer on the MgO protection layer, we measured the surface morphology, cathodoluminescence (CL) spectrum, the secondary electron emission coefficient (${\gamma}$) and the discharge characteristics after 500 hours of discharge during the operation of the AC-PDP.

  • In this study, the electron behavior was investigated numerically in order to obtain guidelines for design and operation of a new plasma source by a magnetic neutral loop discharge (NLD). The optimum plasma production was investigated by using a 3-dimensional simulation model which enables the electron behavior calculation from source region to downstream region. The results showed that the high-density plasma produced around the magnetic neutral loop (NL) is transferred from the NL region to the downstream region along magnetic force lines. Also the avaraged electron energy is increased with the normalized RF electric field (F), which can be used to characterize the plasma production efficiency of NLD system. Considering the relation between F and plasma production, in-depth plasma control can be achieved at a given specific process condition.

  • This study aims to inactivate Artemia sp. (Zooplankton) in ballast water through the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma process. The DBD plasma process has the advantage of enabling direct electric discharge in water and utilizing chemically active species generated by the plasma reaction. The experimental conditions for plasma reaction are as follows; high voltage of 9-22 kV, plasma reaction time of 15-600 s, and air flow rate of 0.5-5.5 L/min. The results showed that the optimal experimental conditions for Artemia sp inactivation were 16 kV, 60 s, 2.5 L/min, respectively. The concentrations of total residual oxidants and ozone generated by plasma reaction increased with an increase of in voltage and reaction time, and the concentration of generated air did not increase above a certain amount.

  • The characteristics of the reset and the address discharges of an alternating current Plasma Display Panel (ac PDP) were studied using 2-dimensional numerical discharge cell simulation. We investigated the wall charge variations during the reset discharge adopting ramping reset pulse and the subsequent addressing discharge. The roles of the ramping reset scheme can be divided into two stages, each electrode gathers wall charges during ramping-up of the initial stage and the built-up wall charges are lost during ramping-down of the later stage. Address discharge does not only change the wall charge distributions on the address and the scan electrodes but also on the sustain electrode. The increase in the wall charges on the sustain electrode was observed with the variation of the applied voltage to the sustain electrode during the address period. The increase of the applied voltage to the sustain electrode during the address period is expected to induce the decrease of the sustain voltage during the display period.

  • Research was performed to increase the efficiency of a plasma reactor for $H_2$ yield. In the preceding studies $H_2$ was increased by adding Ni as a transitional metal catalyst and $TiO_2$ as a photocatalyst. In these experiments, it was found that distilled water, discharge frequency, and electrode configuration had a significant impact on $H_2$ generation. A substantial amount of hydrogen yield was observed at 2 kHz of discharge frequency and 12 kV of applied voltage. Within this favorable discharge conditions, the weight rate of $TiO_2$ and Ni powders was investigated. Plasma phenomenon was measured by electrical, optical and acoustical devices. It was found that emitted light, electric current and acoustical signals acquired from the discharge demonstrated systematical correlation. Changing the electrode's configuration allowed discharge distribution along the perimeter of the electrode's tip, which increased the density of streamers and plasma energy loadings, as the value of inception voltage for the discharge propagation decreased.
