Streptomyces blastmyceticus strain 12-6 was isolated from a forest soil sample of Cheonan area on the basis of strong antifungal activities against plant pathogenic fungi. Butanol extracts of the cultural filtrates were active against C. acutatum, C. coccodes, C. gloeosporioides, F. oxysporum, and T. roseum. Active fractions were prepared by thin layer chromatography using silica gel plate; 12-6-2 ($R_f$ 0.36), 12-6-3 ($R_f$ 0.44). Scanning electron microscopy showed that the active fractions caused a change in surface texture of fungal spores from smooth surface to wrinkled surface. The lethal effect on the spores of the active fractions varied from 56% to 100%. It was shown that the spores of C. acutatum were more sensitive to the antifungal fractions than the spores of F. oxysporum. Fluorescence staining using TOTO-1 indicated that the antifungal fractions could make the spores more sensitive to the fluorescence dye. Thus, it was suggested that antifungal agents prepared in this study exhibited the antifungal activity by damaging the plasma membrane of both fungal spores and hyphae. Identification of antifungal agents in the active fraction using GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of cyclo-(Leu-Pro) and 9-octadecenamide as major components that have already been known as antifungal substances.
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) family Malvaceae is an important crop used in food, cosmetics and pharmaceutics industries. Roselle is cultivated mainly in Upper Egypt (Qena and Aswan governorates) producing 94% of total production. Root rot disease of roselle is one of the most important diseases that attack both seedlings and adult plants causing serious losses in crop productivity and quality. The main objective of the present study is to identify and characterize pathogens associated with root rot and wilt symptoms of roselle in Qena, Upper Egypt and evaluate their pathogenicity under greenhouse and field condition. Fusarium oxysporum, Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium solani, Fusarium equiseti and Fusarium semitectum were isolated from the natural root rot diseases in roselle. All isolated fungi were morphologically characterized and varied in their pathogenic potentialities. They could attack roselle plants causing damping-off and root rot/wilt diseases in different pathogenicity tests. The highest pathogenicity was caused by F. oxysporum and M. phaseolina followed by F. solani. The least pathogenic fungi were F. equiseti followed by F. semitectum. It obviously noted that Baladi roselle cultivar was more susceptible to infection with all tested fungi than Sobhia 17 under greenhouse and field conditions. This is the first report of fungal pathogens causing root rot and vascular wilt in roselle in Upper Egypt.
Contemporary biological control system includes the use of fungi to control weeds in agricultural ecosystems and forests. Fungal pathogens of weeds that are highly virulent and specific to target weeds, and able to be produced massively by artificial culture could be applied like chemical herbicides over the weeds.(중략)
Withametelin, a steroidal compound isolated from leaves of Datura metel L.(Solanaceae), showed antifungal activity against some plant pathogenic as well as saprophytic fungi tested in vitro. Except Curvularia maculans and Colletotrichum sp., spore germination of all the other 23 fungi was inhibited significantly at 125 to 1000 ppm. Out of the 25 fungi tested, Curvularia sp., Cercospora abelmoschi, Heterosporium sp., Erysiphe cichoracearum and Ustilago cynodontis were most sensitive as there was complete inhibition of germination at 1000 ppm. Similarly, spores of Alternaria brassicae, Curvularia lunata and Helminthosporium pennisetti showed less than 3% germination at the same concentration. Rest of the fungi showed more than 15% spore germination at the same concentration.

1-Corydalmine, an alkaloid isolated from roots of Corydalis ehaerophylla inhibited spore germination of some plant pathogenic as well as saprophytic fungi e.g. Alternaria brassicae, A. brassicieola, A. solani, Curvularia lunata, C. maculans, C. sp., C. pallseens, Erysiphe pisi, Fusarium udum, Helminthosporium species, H. penniseti and a Heterosporium species. 1-Corydalmine significantly inhibited spore germination of all the fungi at 100 to 1500 ppm. It was effective against all the fungi at 1500 ppm. C. lunata was highly sensitive to this chemical even at 250 ppm.
In the course of a searching natural antifungal compounds from plant sources, we found that the methanol extract ($3,000\;{\mu}g/ml$) of Malus domestica fruits had potential of control against rice blast (Magnaporthe grisea) and tomato late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Under bioassay-guided purification, we isolated phloretin, a phenolic compound, with in vivo antifungal activity against M. grisea. By 1-day protective application of phloretin ($500\;{\mu}g/ml$), the compound strongly inhibited the disease development of M. grisea and P. infestans on rice and tomato seedlings, respectively. And red pepper anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum coccodes also was moderately suppressed. However, rice sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani AG1), and barley powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei) were hardly controlled. In addition, the compound showed in vitro antifungal activity against some plant pathogenic fungi including Phytophthora capsici, Alternaria panax, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, R. solani AG4, and M. grisea. This is the first report on the antifungal activity of phloretin against plant pathogenic fungi.

Screening tests against six plant pathogenic fungi were performed in order to develop biopesticides. Actinomycetes were used to discriminate Bacillus thuringiensis for wide use as a microbial pesticide. From more than 100 actinomycetes tested, twelve strains showed potent antifungal activities. We report in vivo screening results from fermentation broths of these twelve strains and identification of the strain taxa.
Antifungal activity of compost teas was evaluated in vitro and in vivo experiments. In vitro test, fourteen compost teas were produced using five different composts and through six different methods for compost tea production. Eleven pathogenic fungi were used as indicators of antifungal activity of compost teas. In vivo test, one of the compost teas used in vitro test was sprayed to cucumber leaves which were infected with powdery mildew in order to evaluate antifungal activity of compost tea. From the results of the tests, it was found that all compost teas used this study showed antifungal activity and the proper application of compost teas against pathogenic fungi for obtaining optimal effects was important to know.
Serratia marcescens co-cultured with various phytopathogenic fungi, including Rhizopus stolonifer, Helminthosporium allii, Pyricularia oryzae, Fusarium oxysporium and Collectothricom cassiicola, in an LB- agar medium containing 1.5% swollen chitin, significantly inhibitied fungal growth. Fungal hyphae grew rapidly outward from the culture dish center, but the hyphal extensions of the pathogenic fungi were significantly inhibited in a perimetric contact area with S. marcescens. This was especially evident in pathogenic fungi which have a high chitin content in their cell walls. The extracellular chitinase activities of S. marcescens were increased seven fold by the addition of 1.5% swollen chitin to the LB-broth, compared to chitinase activities in a culture medium without chitin. The type of induction was dependent on the various forms of chitin used. When the culture supernatant of S. marcescens or the chitinases of Streptomyces griceus purchased from Sigma Chemical Co., were incubated with the mycelium of F. oxysporium, the mycelium gradually burst as cultivation time progressed and completely lysed after incubation for 2 days. On the other hand, E. coli extract did not hydrolyze the F. oxysporium mycelium at all. These data showed that the chitinolytic activities of S. marcescens play important roles in the biochemical control of phytopathogenic fungi.
A kind of naphthoquinone, plumbagin was purified and identified from the leaves of Nepenthes $ventricosa\;{\times}\;maxima$ through solvent extraction, silica gel column chromatography, and recrystallization. The yield (0.51%) was higher than that of the root of Plumbago scandens (0.26%), P. capensis (0.15%), and N. thorelii (0.092%). It exhibited antifungal activity against all plant pathogenic fungi tested, Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus niger, Bipolaris oryzae, Fusarium oxysporum, Phytophthora capsici, Rhizoctonia solani, Rhizopus stolonifer var. stolonifer and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. The minimum inhibitory concentration values ranged from about 4.8 to $56.6\;{\mu}g/ml$ against the above eight fungi and R. solani was the most sensitive.
