Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) causes a significant economic loss in the swine industry not only in Korea but also all over the world. Andong and Hapcheon region were selected for Area Regional Control (ARC) programme to reduce the shedding of PRRS virus (PRRSV) and decrease PRRS outbreaks. Before conducting the PRRS ARC, sera of pigs were tested for both antibody using ELISA and antigen using RT-PCR, then phylogenetic classifications was analysed. Pigs of 138/275 (50.2%) in Andong and 352/425 (82.8%) in Hapcheon were seropositive. Also, the RT-PCR results revealed that 27 heads (8.2%) in Andong, 112 heads (22.0%) in Hapcheon were positive for PRRSV antigen. PRRSVs were mainly detected between the ages of 40 to 60 days. PRRSV ORF5 regions were used to determine genetic clusters based on previous report. All PRRSV type I detected in both Andong and Hapcheon were classified as Cluster I. The PRRSV type II isolates in Andong were assorted to Cluster II, whereas the PRRSV type II isolates in Hapcheon were the viruses were unassembled into any cluster except one identified to Cluster III. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that new clusters of PRRSVs type II were prevalent in Hapcheon.
Anthracnose symptoms were frequently observed on fruits of peach trees grown in Yeongi in Korea during disease survey in August from 2000 to 2005. The disease incidence was as high as 40% at its maximum in the orchards investigated. A total of 24 isolates of Colletotrichum species were obtained from the anthracnose symptoms, out of which 20 were identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and the four remaining ones as C. acutatum based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Two isolates of each C. gloeosporioides and C. acutatum caused anthracnose symptoms on the fruits by both wound and unwound inoculation, which were similar to those observed in the orchard. The symptoms appeared more rapidly by the wound inoculation than by the unwound inoculation. There was no difference in pathogenicity between the C. gloeosporioides and C. acutatum isolates tested. In Korea, only C. gloeosporioides has been recorded as the causal fungus of anthracnose of peach tree. This is the first report that C. acutatum also causes anthracnose of peach tree in Korea.
Bacterial leaf spot by Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria has been known to cause serious problem in red pepper in Korea. However recent survey showed that most smptoms in the leaves were mixed with two different symptoms one was leaf spot and the other was canker. bacteria isolated from canker were identified as Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis on the basis of biochemical and physiological characteristics. The causal bacteria were non-motile rod-shaped and Gram-positive. The lesions on pepper leaves appeared at first as small blisters or pimple-like white spots which enlarged in size at a later stage. The centers of some of the spots became necrotic and brown and were surrounded by a white halo. Pathogenicity tests were performed on pepper cv. Alchan seedling by spraying of bacterial suspension. During 1997 and 1998 total 17% of 527 fields surveyed were infected by C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis. The canker of red pepper caused by C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis was first identified in this study in Korea, and new name "gueyangbyung" was tentatively given to the disease.
Xanthomonas citri pv. glycines (Xcg) is a major pathogen of soybean (Glycine max) in South Korea, despite the availability of soybean varieties with some resistance. We conducted a nationwide survey of the incidence and severity of bacterial pustule caused by Xcg. The percentage of infected fields was 7% to 17% between 2015 and 2017. We characterized the diversity of a nationwide collection of 106 Xcg isolates based on avrBs3 banding patterns. The isolates fell into 11 groups, each represented by a type strain; only two of these were similar to isolates collected from 1999 to 2002. The diversity of Xcg strains increased and the dominant strains changed between 1999 and 2017, with three new type strains comprising 44% of the isolates examined in 2012 to 2017. Pathogenicity tests did not show evidence for a shift in the races or aggressiveness of Xcg strains. Korean soybean cultivars, including the widely-grown Daewon cultivar, were susceptible to the 11 new type strains. The cultivar CNS, which carries the rxp resistance gene, was susceptible to most type strains, including two representing 83% of the Korean Xcg strains. In contrast, Williams 82, which also carries rxp, showed resistance to at least five type strains. Collectively, these results suggest that Williams 82 has resistance loci in addition to rxp. The widespread distribution of Xcg, the high virulence of the current endemic strains, and the low resistance of most Korean soybean cultivars collectively favor widespread disease in Korea in years that are favorable to pustule development.
As preventive measures for bonsai exports, nematodes were isolated from 55 bonsai samples of five coniferous species (Chamaecyparis pisifera, Juniperus chinensis, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii, and Taxus cuspidate) from all 15 bonsai gardens in Korea. Nematodes belonging to 21 genera in 7 orders were isolated from the 55 bonsai samples. Among plant-parasitic nematodes, Tylenchus spp. was the most frequently isolated (14.9%), followed by Ditylenchus spp. (10.5%), Aphelenchoides spp. (9.5%), Aphelenchus sp. (5.5%), Criconemoides sp. (4.0%), Helicotylenchus sp. (0.7%), Hemicycliophora sp. (0.7%), Mesocriconema sp. (0.7%), Tylenchorhynchus sp. (0.7%), and Paratylenchus sp. (0.4%). Among nonparasitic nematodes, Cephalobina was the most frequently isolated nematodes (26.5%), followed by Rhabditida (19.3%), Dorylaimida (17.8%), Pangrolaimida (14.5%), Plectida (6.5%), Tryphylida (6.2%), Mononchida (3.3%), Alaimida (2.9%), Monhysterida (2.5%), and Triplonchida (0.4%). Based on these results, we conclude that there is no problematic plant-parasitic nematode in bonsai gardens of Korea.

In 2010, foliar symptoms were observed in the paprika leaves in Jinju city, Korea. Beet western yellows virus (BWYV) was identified in paprika by using the large-scale oligonucleotide chip assay. To investigate the occurrence of BWYV, a survey was performed on various crops, including paprika, from 2011 to 2014. Further, the presence of BWYV was consistently verified through literature survey from 2015 to 2017. BWYV infection has been identified in Solanaceae crops (bell pepper, hot pepper, and paprika), various weeds, and green peach aphids and it occurs on a nationwide scale. Cultivation using organic methods involved natural enemies and showed a high BWYV infection rate, which was more than that for conventional cultivation methods in greenhouse. The complete genome sequence of BWYV isolated from paprika was determined for the first time. The genome of the BWYV-Korea isolate consists of 5750 nucleotides and has six open reading frames. Sequence identity results showed maximum similarity between the BWYV-Korea isolate and the BWYV LS isolate (identity > 90%). This study is the first report of BWYV infecting paprika in Korea. The survey revealed that BWYV is naturalized in the domestic ecology of Korea.
Anthracnose symptoms severely occurred up to 50% on leaves of English ivy growing in greenhouses in Cheongwon area of Korea during disease survey in April, 2000. The symptoms developed as concentric spots with dot-like acervuli on leaves of the plant. A total of 24 isolates of Colletotrichum sp. were obtained from the spotted lesions and identified as Colletotrichum trichellum based on the morphological and cultural characteristics. Leaf spots similar to the original anthracnose symptoms were induced on the host leaves by artificial inoculation with the isolates of the fungus. This is the first record of C. trichellum causing anthracnose of English ivy in Korea.

Serve outbreaks of anthracnose were observed on perilla plants grown in greenhouses and open fields in several locations in Korea during the disease survey from 1997 to 2000. A total of 53 isolates of Colletotrichum spp. and Glomerella sp. was obtained from diseased perilla plants and identified based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Forty isolates were identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, three isolates as C. coccodes, five isolates as C. dematium, and the other five isolates as Glomerella cingulata, the teleomorph of C. gloeosporioides. All isolates of C. gloeosporioides tested by artificial inoculation were strongly virulent on perilla plants, but isolates of the other species were weakly or not virulent. Anthracnose symptoms induced on the perilla plants by artificial inoculation with the isolates of C. gloeosporioides were similar to those observed in the fields. This study revealed that C. gloeosporioides is the main causal fungus of perilla anthracnose.
Anthracnose symptoms severely occurred up to 100% on leaves of May lily grown in four locations in Korea during a disease survey in 2001. The symptoms appeared as circular to irregular spots with brown to dark brown discoloration on leaves of the plant, and severely infected leaves blighted. A total of 35 isolates of Colletotrichum sp. was obtained from the spotted lesions and identified as Colletotrichum liliacearum based on the morphological and cultural characteristics. Leaf spots similar to the original anthracnose symptoms were induced on the host leaves by artificial inoculation with the isolates of the fungus. This is the first report that C. liliacearum causes anthracnose of May lily.
