The planktonic shrimp, Acetes chinensis Hansen, 1919 inhabits the coastal areas of the Info-West Pacific, Korea, China, Taiwan, and Japan and is most abundant along the coastal areas of Yellow Sea. Several studies have locally examined aspects of reproductive biology of the species such as reproductive cycle, spawning, maturity, breeding pattern and fecundity. (omitted)
Slope sedimentation on the modern west Florida continental margin is controlled by pelagic carbonate accumulation and off-shelf sedimentation of neritic carbonates and terrigenous fines. Production and deposition of pelagic carbonates by planktonic foraminifera and coccoliths have played a significant role in the total slope sedimentation and are mainly promoted by sea-surface productivity. Organic carbon data reflect the relatively high biological productivity in surface waters, indicating high accumulation of biogenic calcareous sediments. The surface-water productivity in the study area is supported by the relation among microfossil assemblages, carbonate mineralogy and sedimentary organic carbon.
Metal-based drugs, such as 1,10-phenanthroline, have demonstrated anticancer, antifungal and antiplasmodium activities. One of the 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives compounds (1)-N-2-methoxybenzyl-1,10-phenanthrolinium bromide (FEN), which has been demonstrated an inhibitory effect on the growth of Candida spp. This study aimed to explore the in vitro antifungal activity of FEN and its effect on the membrane integrity of Candida albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of FEN against planktonic C. albicans cells were determined using the broth microdilution method according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Cell membrane integrity was determined with the propidium iodide assay using a flow cytometer and were visualized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Planktonic cells growth of C. albicans were inhibited by FEN, with an MIC of $0.39-1.56{\mu}g/mL$ and a MFC that ranged from 3.125 to $100{\mu}g/mL$. When C. albicans was exposed to FEN, the uptake of propidium iodide was increased, which indicated that membrane disruption is the probable mode of action of this compound. There was cells surface changes of C. albicans when observed under SEM.
Microorganisms can attach firmly to food contact surface material and the resitance of adherent bacteria differ markedly from planktonic cells. Therefore, adherent cells are a potential contamination problem to the food preparation because of their high resistance. to sanitation and heat treatment. This study was carried out in order to investigate growth and decontamination of Listeria monocytogenes attached to stainless steel, glass and plastic. Listeria monocytogenes cells could attach to all types of surface at three temperatures after contact times for 24 hrs. The numbers of adherent cells were greater at higher temperatures, but not increased with incubation time. When recovery of adherent cells was investigated, after 24 grs, the numbers of adherent cells were about 10$^{7}$ , 10$^{10}$ , 11$^{11}$ at 4$^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, 3$0^{\circ}C$ repectively. Planctonic cells decreased by 2 log cycles after exposure to the domestic sanitizer. Adherent cells showed high resistance to domestic sanitizers and that was dependent upon surface materials studied, being greatest on plastic followed by stainless steel and glass. Adherent cells were more resistant to heat treatment than planktonic cells. When adherent cells were exposed to the temperature of 5$0^{\circ}C$, 55$^{\circ}C$, 57.5$^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, their populations did not decrease significantly. When the temprature increased to 6$0^{\circ}C$, cells attached to all types of surfaces were completely inactivated for 10 min.

The summer distributions of planktonic microbial communities (heterotrophic and phtosynthetic bacteria, phtosynthetic and heterotrophic nanoflagellates, ciliate plankton, and microphytoplankton) were compared between inner and outer areas of Lake Sihwa, divided by an artificial breakwater, located on the western coast of Korea, in September 2003. The semi-enclosed, inner area was characterized by hyposaline surface water (<17 psu), and by low concentrations of dissolved oxygen (avg. $0.4\;mg\;L^{-1}$) and high concentrations of inorganic nutrients (nitrogenous nutrients $>36\;{\mu}M$, phosphate $>4\;{\mu}M$) in the bottom layer. Higher densities of heterotrophic bacteria and nanoflagellates also occurred in the inner area than did in the outer area, while microphytoplankton (mainly diatoms) occurred abundantly in the outer area. A tiny tintinnid ciliate, Tintinnopsis nana, bloomed into more than $10^6\;cells\;L^{-1}$ at the surface layer of the inner area, while its abundance was much lower ($10^3-10^4\;cells\;L^{-1}$) in the outer area of the breakwater. Ciliate abundance was highly correlated with heterotrophic bacteria (r = 0.886, p < 0.001) and heterotrophic flagellates (r = 0.962, p < 0.001), indicating that rich food availability may have led to the T. nana bloom. These results suggest that the breakwater causes the eutrophic environment in artificial lakes with limited flushing of enriched water and develops into abundant bacteria, nanoflagellates, and ciliates.
Monthly variations of phytoplankton communities were conducted to the investigation at five stations in mid and lower parts of the Nakdong River from December 1995 to November 1996. The phytoplankton communities were identified a total 456taxa which were composed of 136 genera, 427 species, 27 varieties and 2 forma. The standing crops of phytoplankton communities ranged from 2.7 to 52.8 (${\times}$10³)cells·ml$^{-1}$ during the investigation periods. Bacillariophyceae was the dominant classes at all stations. The dominant species were 7taxa and the standing crops of these ranged from 18.3 to 95.1% of the standing crops of phytoplankton communities. The dominant species in the mid parts (st. 1, 2) of this river system were benthic species such as Navicula gregaria, N. viridula var. rostellata and Nitzschia palea, however it was planktonic species (Stephan discus hantzschii, Golenkinia radiata) and meroplanktonic species (Aulacoseira ambigua, A. granulata) in the lower parts (st. 3, 4, 5). The seasonal variations of the dominant species in the lower parts were appeared to the planktonic species (S. hantzschii) from winter to spring, and were the meroplanktonic species (A. ambigua and A. granulata) in from summer to fall. The lower parts of the Nakdong river were entropic states because the dominant species were composed A. ambigua, A. granulate and S. hantzschii which were indicators of entropic water quality. The interrelationships between total standing crops and environmental factors(water temperature, pH, NH$_4$, NO$_2$, NO$_3$ and PO$_4$) were low positive or negative coefficients. S. hantzschii had low positive or negative relations with water temperature, NH$_4$, NO$_2$, NO$_3$ and PO$_4$. As the result, the variations of standing crops of phytoplankton were not caused by a single factor but controlled by the complex factors.
Time-series sediment traps were deployed at 1,000 m water depth of the northwestern subtropical Pacific from July 2009 to June 2010, with the aim of understanding temporal and spatial variations of sinking-particle fluxes. The opening and closing of the traps was synchronized at 18-day periods for 20 events. Total mass fluxes showed distinct seasonal variations with high values for the summer-fall seasons and relatively low values for winter-spring. This seasonal variation at two stations was characterized by a distinct difference in $CaCO_3$ fluxes between the two seasons. The enhanced $CaCO_3$ flux in the summer - fall seasons might be attributed to an increased planktonic foraminiferal flux. Total mass flux at FM10 station was nearly 50% higher than that at FM1 station. The difference in $CaCO_3$ fluxes between two stations contributed nearly 70% of the difference of total mass fluxes. The $CaCO_3$ flux was a major component controlling temporal and spatial variation of sinking - particle fluxes in the western subtropical Pacific Ocean.
Biofilm-related infections of Candida albicans are a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients, especially those with immunocompromised status. Options of the antifungal drugs available for successful treatment of drug-resistant biofilms are very few, and as such, new strategies need to be explored against them. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of phenylpropanoids of plant origin against planktonic cells, important virulence factors, and biofilm forms of C. albicans. Standard susceptibility testing protocol was used to evaluate the activities of 13 phenylpropanoids against planktonic growth. Their effects on adhesion and yeast-to-hyphae morphogenesis were studied in microplate-based methodologies. An in vitro biofilm model analyzed the phenylpropanoid-mediated prevention of biofilm development and mature biofilms using XTT-metabolic assay, crystal violet assay, and light microscopy. Six molecules exhibited fungistatic activity at ${\leq}0.5mg/ml$, of which four were fungicidal at low concentrations. Seven phenylpropanoids inhibited yeast-to-hyphae transition at low concentrations (0.031-0.5 mg/ml), whereas adhesion to the solid substrate was prevented in the range of 0.5-2 mg/ml. Treatment with ${\leq}0.5mg/ml$ concentrations of at least six small molecules resulted in significant (p < 0.05) inhibition of biofilm formation by C. albicans. Mature biofilms that are highly resistant to antifungal drugs were susceptible to low concentrations of 4 of the 13 molecules. This study revealed phenylpropanoids of plant origin as promising candidates to devise preventive strategies against drug-resistant biofilms of C. albicans.
