Performance of a Planar Leaky-Wave Slit Antenna for Different Values of Substrate Thickness

  • This paper presents the performance of a planar, low-profile, and wide-gain-bandwidth leaky-wave slit antenna in different thickness values of high-permittivity gallium arsenide substrates at terahertz frequencies. The proposed antenna designs consisted of a periodic array of $5{\times}5$ metallic square patches and a planar feeding structure. The patch array was printed on the top side of the substrate, and the feeding structure, which is an open-ended leaky-wave slot line, was etched on the bottom side of the substrate. The antenna performed as a Fabry-Perot cavity antenna at high thickness levels ($H=160{\mu}m$ and $H=80{\mu}m$), thus exhibiting high gain but a narrow gain bandwidth. At low thickness levels ($H=40{\mu}m$ and $H=20{\mu}m$), it performed as a metasurface antenna and showed wide-gain-bandwidth characteristics with a low gain value. Aside from the advantage of achieving useful characteristics for different antennas by just changing the substrate thickness, the proposed antenna design exhibited a low profile, easy integration into circuit boards, and excellent low-cost mass production suitability.

Localization for Mobile Robot Navigation using Color Patches Installed on the Ceiling (천정 부착 칼라 패치 배열을 이용한 이동로봇의 자기위치 인식)

  • A localization system to estimate the position as well as movement direction of mobile robots is proposed in this paper. This system implements a camera fixed on a robot and color patches evenly distributed and mounted on the planar ceiling. Different permutations of patch colors code information about robot localization. Thus, extraction of color information from patch images leads to estimation of robot position. Additionally, simple geometric indicators are combined with patch colors to estimate robot's movement direction. Since only the distribution of patch colors has to be known, the analysis of patch images to is relatively fast and simple. The proposed robot localization system has been successfully tested for navigation of sample mobile robot. Obtained test results indicate the robustness and reliability of proposed technique for robot navigation.

  • Nitric oxide (NO) has been reported to have many roles in vivo ranging from the neurotransmitter in brain to the relaxant in smooth muscles. Recently, using inside-out patches, Bolotina et al. Dual Polarized Array Antenna for S/X Band Active Phased Array Radar Application

  • A dual-band dual-polarized microstrip antenna array for an advanced multi-function radio function concept (AMRFC) radar application operating at S and X-bands is proposed. Two stacked planar arrays with three different thin substrates (RT/Duroid 5880 substrates with $\varepsilon_r$=2.2 and three different thicknesses of 0.253 mm, 0.508 mm and 0.762 mm) are integrated to provide simultaneous operation at S band (3~3.3 GHz) and X band (9~11 GHz). To allow similar scan ranges for both bands, the S-band elements are selected as perforated patches to enable the placement of the X-band elements within them. Square patches are used as the radiating elements for the X-band. Good agreement exists between the simulated and the measured results. The measured impedance bandwidth (VSWR$\leq$2) of the prototype array reaches 9.5 % and 25 % for the S- and X-bands, respectively. The measured isolation between the two orthogonal polarizations for both bands is better than 15 dB. The measured cross-polarization level is ${\leq}-21$ dB for the S-band and ${\leq}-20$ dB for the X-band.

Fast Axis Estimation from 3D Axially-Symmetric Object's Fragment (3차원 회전축 대칭 물체 조각의 축 추정 방법)

  • To reduce the computational cost required for assembling vessel fragments using surface geometry, this paper proposes a fast axis estimation method. Using circular constraint of pottery and local planar patch assumption, it finds the axis of the symmetry. First, the circular constraint on each cylinder is used. A circular symmetric pot can be thought of unions of many cylinders with different radii. It selects one arbitrary point on the pot fragment surface and searches a path where a circumference exists on that point. The variance of curvature will be calculated along the path and the path with the minimum variance will be selected. The symmetric axis will pass through the center of that circle. Second, the planar patch assumption and profile curve is used. The surface of fragment is divided into small patches and each patch is assumed as plane. The surface normal of each patch will intersects the axis in 3D space since each planar patch faces the center of the pot. A histogram method and minimization of the profile curve error are utilized to find the probability distribution of the axis location. Experimental results demonstrate the improvement in speed and robustness of the algorithms.

City-Scale Modeling for Street Navigation

  • This paper proposes a semi-automatic image-based approach for 3-dimensional (3D) modeling of buildings along streets. Image-based urban 3D modeling techniques are typically based on the use of aerial and ground-level images. The aerial image of the relevant area is extracted from publically available sources in Google Maps by stitching together different patches of the map. Panoramic images are common for ground-level recording because they have advantages for 3D modeling. A panoramic video recorder is used in the proposed approach for recording sequences of ground-level spherical panoramic images. The proposed approach has two advantages. First, detected camera trajectories are more accurate and stable (compared to methods using multi-view planar images only) due to the use of spherical panoramic images. Second, we extract the texture of a facade of a building from a single panoramic image. Thus, there is no need to deal with color blending problems that typically occur when using overlapping textures.

  • In this paper, we present a new combined field integral equation (CFIE) formulation for the analysis of electromagnetic scattering from arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional perfectly conducting and piecewise homogeneous dielectric composite body. The conducting/dielectric structures are approximated by planar triangular patches, which have the ability to conform to any geometrical surface. The surface covering the conducting body is replaced by an equivalent surface electric current and the surface of the dielectric by equivalent electric and magnetic currents. The all equivalent currents are approximated in terms of RWG (Rao, Wilton, Glisson) functions. The objective of this paper is to illustrate that the CFIE is a valid methodology in removing defects, which occur at a frequency corresponding to an internal resonance of the structure. Numerical results are presented and compared with solutions obtained using other formulations.

Templated solid-state dewetting of thin films

  • Solid-state dewetting of thin films is a process through which continuous solid films decay to form islands. Dewetting of thin films has long been a critical issue in microelectronics and much effort has been made to prevent the process and enhance the stability of films. On the other hand, dewetting has also been purposely induced to create arrays of particles and other structures for applications, including plasmonic structures and catalysts for growing nanotube and nanowire. We have investigated ways of producing regular structures via templated dewetting of thin films. Mainly, two different approaches have been used in our works to template dewetting of thin films: periodic topographical templating and planar patterning of epitaxially-grown films. Dewetting of topographically-patterned thin films results in the formation of nanoparticle arrays with spatial and crystallographic orders. Morphological evolution during templated-dewetting of single crystal films occurs in deterministic ways because of geometric and crystallographic constraints, and leads to the formation of regular structures with smaller sizes and more complex shapes than the initial patches. These results will be reviewed in this presentation.

Enhanced-Gain Planar Substrate-Integrated Waveguide Cavity-Backed Slot Antenna with Rectangular Slot Window on Superstrate

  • A novel substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed slot antenna is proposed in this study to achieve enhanced-gain performance. The peak gain is remarkably improved with the use of an SIW cavity and metallic superstrate. The superstrate comprises a single rectangular slot window and two half-wavelength patches. The gain can be enhanced by combining the in-phase radiating fields. Further, the 10 dB bandwidth of the proposed antenna ranges from 2.32 GHz to 2.49 GHz, which covers the wireless local area network band. The measured peak gain is 9.44 dBi at 2.42 GHz.

  • 가상현실이나 인터넷 웹지도 서비스와 같이 3차원의 실세계를 시스템 상에 그대로 재현(reconstruction)하기 위해서는 정교하고 세밀한 3차원 도시모델이 필수적이다. 이러한 3차원 도시모델의 자동생성은 원격탐사 및 사진측량 분야에서 많은 연구가 수행되고 있다. 이러한 연구들은 다양한 센서 데이터와 기 구축되어 있는 GIS자료를 이용하여 건물, 도로, 지형 등의 도시모델을 자동으로 생성하고자 한다. 그러나 대부분의 연구에서 추출한 각 기본요소(primitives)-평면패치(planar patches), 에지(edges), 모서리(corners)에 대한 국부적인 정제(refinement)는 수행하였으나, 생성한 건물 모델에 대한 광역적인 조정을 통한 정규화에 대한 연구는 미비한 상태이다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 데이터로부터 생성된 B-rep (boundary representation) 형태의 건물 모델에 대하여 기하학적인 제약요소(constraints)를 이용한 정규화(regularization) 방법론을 제시하고자 한다. 제안하는 방법은 건물의 Domain Knowledge에 기반하여 도출한 건물을 구성하는 기본요소(primitives)간의 인접성, 직교성, 평행성, 교차성 등의 다양한 제약조건을 이용하여 광역적으로 조정한다. 시뮬레이션 데이터에 적용한 결과의 분석을 통해 제안된 정규화 방법을 통해 오차가 포함된 건물모델이 보다 정형화된 형태로 조정되었음을 확인하였다.
