  • Recently, many studies have been performed to apply airborne LIDAR data to extracting urban models. In order to model efficiently the man-made objects which are the main components of these urban models, it is important to extract automatically planar patches from the set of the measured three-dimensional points. Although some research has been carried out for their automatic extraction, no method published yet is sufficiently satisfied in terms of the accuracy and completeness of the segmentation results and their computational efficiency. This study thus aimed to developing an efficient approach to automatic segmentation of planar patches from the three-dimensional points acquired by an airborne LIDAR system. The proposed method consists of establishing adjacency between three-dimensional points, grouping small number of points into seed patches, and growing the seed patches into surface patches. The core features of this method are to improve the segmentation results by employing the variable threshold value repeatedly updated through a statistical analysis during the patch growing process, and to achieve high computational efficiency using priority heaps and sequential least squares adjustment. The proposed method was applied to real LIDAR data to evaluate the performance. Using the proposed method, LIDAR data composed of huge number of three dimensional points can be converted into a set of surface patches which are more explicit and robust descriptions. This intermediate converting process can be effectively used to solve object recognition problems such as building extraction.

  • In this paper, we designed and implemented the planar monopole antenna using the coupling effect for the multi-band characteristic. A parasitic element for the multi-band characteristic based on a rectangular patch with single resonance is inserted. Spiral shaped parasitic element is used for minimizing the antenna size and obtaining the multi-resonance characteristic. The frequency characteristics are modified and optimized by varying specific parameters. By inserting an L-shaped resonator at both sides of the feed line which connected through the via hole to the ground plane, unnecessary frequency bands are eliminated. Proposed antenna dimension is $40{\times}60{\times}1mm^3$. It is fabricated on the FR-4 substrate(${\varepsilon}_r$=4.4) using a microstrip line of $50{\Omega}$ for impedance matching. By measurement results, the characteristic of the return loss under -10 dB are 1.714~2.496 GHz, 2.977~4.301 GHz, and 4.721~6.315 GHz, and the radiation patterns have omni-directional shapes.

  • In this paper, the detection of 1 g and 10 g averaged SAR on human head caused by PCS/IMT-2000 handhold phones is analyzed and discussed. Planar structured Single-Semi-disc MPA and double-Semi-disc MPA is designed and resonance characteristics with variety of design parameters are analyzed. As a result, 2.0 ㎓ center frequency, at the bandwidth of single-semi-disc MPA and double-semi-disc MPA are 15.5 % and 31 %, respectively. And monopole antenna with W4 length is designed and compared with double-semi-disc MPA in SARs. The SARs caused by double-semi-disc MPA on folder type handset are 0.811 W/kg and 0.507 W/kg and are about 32.7 % lower than monopole-1.206 W/kg and 0.7552 W/kg. While the radiation pattern of the monopole antenna is symmetrical, that of planar structured antenna is asymmetrical and SAR caused by double-semi-disc MPA is less than SAR by the monopole antenna.

  • In this paper, a vital sign sensor based on impedance variation of resonator is proposed to detect the respiration and heartbeat signals within near-field range as a function of the separation distance between resonator and subject. The sensor consists of an oscillator with a built-in planar type patch resonator, a diplexer for only pass the second harmonic frequency, amplifier, SAW filter, and RF detector. The cardiac activity of a subject such as respiration and heartbeat causes the variation of the oscillation frequency corresponding impedance variation of the resonator within near-field range. The combination of the second harmonic oscillation frequency deviation and the superior skirt frequency of the SAW filter enables the proposed sensor to extend twice detection range. The experimental results reveal that the proposed sensor placed 40 mm away from a subject can reliably detect respiration and heartbeat signals.

  • An UWB(Ultra Wide Band) antenna with band rejection characteristics is designed and implemented. A planar radiation patch with slot, parasitic elements on both sides of strip and ground plane on back side consist the proposed antenna. The slot in the radiation patch and parasitic elements contribute corresponding bands rejection characteristics. The slot contributes for WiMAX(World interoperability for Microwave Access, 3.30~3.70 GHz) band rejection and parasitic elements contribute for X-Band(7.25~8.395 GHz) rejection. Ansoft's HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator) was used to design the proposed antenna and performance simulations. Simulation result showed VSWR(Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) less than 2.0 for UWB band except for dual rejection bands of 3.30~3.86 GHz and 7.21~8.39 GHz. And VSWR measurement result for the implemented antenna shows less than 2.0 for 3.10~10.60 GHz band except dual rejection bands of 3.25~3.71 GHz and 7.25~8.46 GHz.

  • In the mobile antenna systems for satellite multimedia communications, the active way antenna having a low sidelobe antenna pattern is described in this paper. This designed and fabricated array antenna is satisfied with international beam pattern regulation on moving states. The subarray of the proposed mobile antenna system is arranged with a stair-planar structure and non-periodic array spacing. This subarray is designed with three-layered microstrip patch as both receiving and transmitting radiator of which are improved with antenna gain and bandwidth. Also, the optimum subarray spacing is designed to make the lowest sidelobe pattern by genetic algorithm. In addition, the characteristics of a GA-perturbed array are investigated from simulated and measured beam pattern results.

  • This paper describes the development of a circularly polarized microstrip antenna, as a part of the Circularly Polarized Synthetic Aperture Radar (CP-SAR) sensor which is currently under developed at the Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MRSL) in Chiba University. CP-SAR is a new type of sensor developed for the purpose of remote sensing. With this sensor, lower-noise data/image will be obtained due to the absence of depolarization problems from propagation encounter in linearly polarized synthetic aperture radar. As well the data/images obtained will be investigated as the Axial Ratio Image (ARI), which is a new data that hopefully will reveal unique various backscattering characteristics. The sensor will be mounted on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) which will be aimed for fundamental research and applications. The microstrip antenna works in the frequency of 1.27 GHz (L-Band). The microstrip antenna utilized the proximity-coupled method of feeding. Initially, the optimization process of the single patch antenna design involving modifying the microstrip line feed to yield a high gain (above 5 dBi) and low return loss (below -10 dB). A minimum of 10 MHz bandwidth is targeted at below 3 dB of Axial Ratio for the circularly polarized antenna. A planar array from the single patch is formed next. Consideration for the array design is the beam radiation pattern in the azimuth and elevation plane which is specified based on the electrical and mechanical constraints of the UAV CP-SAR system. This research will contribute in the field of radar for remote sensing technology. The potential application is for landcover, disaster monitoring, snow cover, and oceanography mapping.

  • In this paper, we introduce a design method for a quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) with broadband characteristics of an impedance bandwidth ratio of > 2 : 1 and a gain of > 4 dBi. The QYA is fed by a microstrip line fabricated on a coplanar strip line and it consists of 3 elements; a planar dipole, a nearby director close to the dipole, and a ground plane reflector. By placing a rectangular patch-type director with large width near to the dipole driver, broadband characteristics are achieved. An optimized 3-element QYA for operation over 1.6-3.5 GHz (bandwidth ratio 2.2 : 1) is fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a size of $90mm{\times}90mm$ and tested experimentally. The results show an impedance bandwidth of 1.56-3.74 GHz (bandwidth ratio 2.4 : 1) for VSWR < 2, a peak gain of 4.41-6.53 dBi, and a front-to-back ratio (FBR) > 13.6 dB within the bandwidth.

  • In this paper, the tri-band planar monopole microstrip antenna which stimulaneously meets the three bands such as TRS, WLAN and DMB is designed. The designed antenna size was smaller using CPW-fed structure that shows a ground-plane and a patch-plane are existed at one layer. The proposed antenna is designed on FR-4 substrate with a relative dielectric constant 4.3, thickness of 1.5mm and tangent loss 0.04. The designed antenna shows that VSWR is below 2 and has good return loss below -10dB over the three bandwidths.

  • This paper presents a novel method of mutual coupling suppression between antenna elements for performance improvement in planar array antenna system. Two miniature patch antenna elements satisfied IEEE 802.1 la($5.75\~5.35\;GHz,\;5.75\~5.85\;GHz$) are used for this research, they are arrayed by half wave length interval. It is observed about -20 dB mutual coupling between each antenna element at center frequency. To suppress mutual coupling, the arrayed antennas with a reversed 'U' structure are observed below -30 dB mutual coupling at IEEE 802.1la band.
