  • Effects of rice straw application (particularly application method; surface placement and deep placement) on the biological nitrogen fixing activity of paddy fields and on the growth of rice plant have been investigated by the lysimeter experiment with Aragawa alluvial soil and Tochigi ando soil. 1. Nitrogen fixing activity of plow layer (0~1cm) was increased by the rice straw application, notably by the phototrophs, both deep placement and surface placement, between 1 and 2 months of initial growth stage of rice plant. 2. Surface placement method stimulated the nitrogen fixing activity more significantly them the deep placement method, and also showed good effects on the growth of rice plant. 3. The increased of effect on the nitrogen fixing activity of surface placed area was found to be originated from the applied rice straw and its neigh bouring area. 4. Nitrogen fixing activity of surface placed rice straw was rather promoted by the application of herbicides (2, 4, 6-arichlorophenyl ether) than the non-applicated plot.

  • Considering the artificial reef (AR) canyon intervals facilitated by flatly distributed placement models, the wake volumes of 25 AR sets were characterized through the following works. First, twenty-five different canyon intervals were established to investigate how the intervals affect the wake volumes of the AR placement models, each with nine cube-type ARs. Second, the element-based finite-volume method was used to facilitate flow analyses. Third, the so-called wake volume concept was adopted, and finally a reasonable placement interval was found based on the size of the wake volumes and the associated unit propagation indices. From the analysis results, it was found that a maximum wake volume of 25.18 m3 was generated when the longitudinal and transverse intervals were fixed at 6 m and 0 m, respectively. Thus, to magnify the wake volume, it is recommended that artificial reefs be placed at intervals of 6 m (3 times the reef length) in the flow direction, with no intervals in the normal direction, implicitly indicating that an intensively stacked placement model is a better option to efficiently secure a larger wake volume for the cube-type ARs.

  • In this paper, an analytical method which can predict the occurrence of plastic shrinkage cracking on concrete slabs with sequential placement is proposed on the basis of the numerical model introduced in the previous study. The influence of many design variables on plastic shrinkage cracking such as the number of layers and the time interval between layers is quantitatively analyzed through parametric studies using the analytical method. In advance, two equations are introduced to take into account the effect of sequential placement on the plastic shrinkage cracking of concrete slab; The first one is to calculate the time at which the surface of concrete slab begins to dry, and the second one is to determine the critical time interval to prevent the surface drying of previously placed concrete layers. The timing of curing and the sequence of concrete placement, which are important for the prevention of plastic shrinkage cracking, can be effectively planned using the introduced both equations without any rigorous analysis.

  • In video-on-demand systems, movies are striped across the disks of the array in a video server to support multiple access. The blocks of the movies have to be placed carefully on the disks of the array in a video server in order to avoid load imbalance across these disks as well as to achieve maximum utilization of both space and bandwidth of these disks. This paper proposes a movie placement method called the GARR (group-alternation round-robin) that is based on the dynamic disk striping method considering the popularity of movie. The GARR uses group-alternation as movie selection policy and round-robin as data placement policy, where group-alternation allocates popular movie and unpopular movie groups to disks alternately. The performance of the GARR is evaluated by simulations.

  • The proposed method for a force directed global placement algorithm exploits and extends techniques from two leading placers, Kraftwerk (& KraftwerkNC) and Mongrel. It combines the strengths of KraftwerkNC, force directed global placer, and Mongrel's ripple move technique which resolves cell overlaps effectively The proposed technique uses the force spreading technique used in Kraftwerk to optimize the ripple movement. While it is resolving the cell overlap and optimizing wire length physical net constraints are considered for timing. The experimental results obtained by the proposed approach shows significant improvement on wire length as well as on timing.

  • Pick and placement systems need high speeds and reliability for the position alignment process of semiconductor packages in picking up and placing them on placement trays. Image processing is usually adopted for position aligning where finding out the most suitable method is considered most important aspect of the process. This paper proposes a method for judging the performance of different image processing algorithms based on the PCI (Process Capability Index). The PCI is an index which represents the error distribution acquired from many experimental data. The bigger the index, the more reliable the results or the lower the deviation. Two compared and candidate methods are Hough Transform and PCA (Principal Component Analysis), both of which are very suitable for oblong or rectangular type packages such as BGA's. Comparing the two approaches through a CPI with enough experimental results leads to the conclusion that the PCA is much better than the Hough Transform in not only reliability, but also processing speed.

  • Wireless sensor networks are useful to various unmanned monitoring application such as monitoring environments, surveillance system, unmanned space exploration, and so on. Due to the inappropriate placement of sensor nodes, there are some problems, for example, low connectivity and high overlapped sensing area. These problems can make it difficult for the data collection and lead to a waste of energy. In this paper, we propose a node relocating method to resolve the inappropriate placement of sensor nodes. Given monitoring area, we place sensor nodes randomly and find redundant nodes and move them to uncovered area. Through the simulation, We show that the proposed method is viable and efficient compared with the existing randomly locating method.

  • This study investigates a new optimal placement method for viscous dampers between structures in order to prevent pounding of adjacent structures with different dynamic characteristics under earthquake effects. A relative displacement spectrum is developed in two single degree of freedom system to reveal the critical period ratios for the most risky scenario of collision using El Centro earthquake record (NS). Three different types of viscous damper design, which are classical, stair and X-diagonal model, are considered to prevent pounding on two adjacent building models. The objective function is minimized under the upper and lower limits of the damping coefficient of the damper and a target modal damping ratio. A new algorithm including time history analyses and numerical optimization methods is proposed to find the optimal dampers placement. The proposed design method is tested on two 12-storey adjacent building models. The effects of the type of damper placement on structural models, the critical period ratios of adjacent structures, the permissible relative displacement limit, the mode behavior and the upper limit of damper are investigated in detail. The results of the analyzes show that the proposed method can be used as an effective means of finding the optimum amount and location of the dampers and eliminating the risk of pounding.

  • Dowel bars in the jointed concrete pavement are used to both provide load transfer across pavements joints and prevent the joint faulting leading to longer service life. On the contrary, the misplacement of dowel bar can provide negative results including the joint freezing(locking) that may cause the joint spatting and unexpected mid-slab cracking. The dowel bar can be placed using the assembly or dowel bar inserter (DBI) during the concrete pavement construction. In the domestic practice of the concrete pavement construction, the dowel bar is placed using the assembly method. This study primarily focuses on the comparison of these two dowel placement methods using the field data from the KHC test road in which both dowel placement methods have been applied to a certain length of the concrete pavement. The field data regarding the alignment of the dowel bars placed by both methods was collected using MIT-SCAN2, a nondestructive measuring equipment, and processed to compute Joint Score and Running Ave. Joint Score which are used as indicators of the dowel bar performance. The comparison of the methods for the dowel bar placement using these indicators shows that the DBI method provided much better alignment of the dowel bars reducing the risk of joint freezing than the assembly method. In order to improve the quality of the dowel bar placement using the assembly method, the current weak points of the assembly method including the fabrication, storage, and installation of dowel bar assembly were investigated and the solution was suggested. The improved dowel bar sets based on the suggested solution have been applied to an actual practice of the concrete pavement construction. The field data shows that the improved assembly method suggested in this study can highly reduce the risk of joint freezing.

  • The method of Mack and Skillings (Technometrics, 23, 171-177, 1981) is a nonparametric multiple comparison method in a randomized block design with replications. This method is likely to result in loss of information because each block is ranked using the average of observations instead of repeated observations. In this paper, we proposed a new nonparametric multiple comparison method in the randomized block model with replications using an alignment method proposed by Hodges and Lehmann (The Annals of Mathematical Statistics, 33, 482-497, 1962) that extend the joint placement method proposed by Chung and Kim (Communications for Statistical Applications and Methods, 14, 551-560, 2007). In addition, Monte Carlo simulation compared the family wise error rate and power with the parametric method and the nonparametric method.
