The wall in a subway structure is easily subject to crack occurrence since its expansion and shrinkage associated with hydration heat reaction is constrained by the slab. The greater problem is that the crack in the wall may be developed to pass through thickness and eventually deteriorate the structure due to rusting of reinforced steel. Thus, this study aims at controlling thermal cracks as much as possible and determining an optimized size of concrete placement through hydration heat analysis. For this study, effects of placement height, length, temperature and types of cement on the thermal cracks were evaluated by temperature rise, thermal stress and crack index. As results of parametric study, it was found that placement height and length do not have an effect on the temperature rise but have significant one on thermal stress which relates to direct possibility of thermal crack occurrence. This means that proper selection of size balancing internal constraint with external one is much more important than reducing the placement height and length simply. In order to prevent from thermal cracks most effectively, in addition, it was noted to reduce placement temperature and to use the cement blended with mineral admixture.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the gingival response to the location of the crown margin and the gingival response to the period of crown placement. Twenty one patients were selected for this study. The patients fitted into the research condition. The crown margins of anterior teeth were located at crest and supragingivally. The crown margins of posterior teeth were located at crest, subgingivally and supragingivally. Plaque index and gingival index were measured before tooth preparation and 1 week,4 weeks, 6 weeks after crown placement. The results were as follows: 1. There was no significance in the gingival response to the location of crown margin in short term period. 2. As the period of crown placement was extended, plaque index and gingival index were gradually increased. 3. Plaque index and gingival index of tooth surfaces were increased in the order of the interproximal surfaces, lingual surfaces and buccal or labial surfaces.

Pick and placement systems need high speeds and reliability for the position alignment process of semiconductor packages in picking up and placing them on placement trays. Image processing is usually adopted for position aligning where finding out the most suitable method is considered most important aspect of the process. This paper proposes a method for judging the performance of different image processing algorithms based on the PCI (Process Capability Index). The PCI is an index which represents the error distribution acquired from many experimental data. The bigger the index, the more reliable the results or the lower the deviation. Two compared and candidate methods are Hough Transform and PCA (Principal Component Analysis), both of which are very suitable for oblong or rectangular type packages such as BGA's. Comparing the two approaches through a CPI with enough experimental results leads to the conclusion that the PCA is much better than the Hough Transform in not only reliability, but also processing speed.

The objective of optimal placement of dampers for a structure is to maximize the effective-ness of the vibration control with the same number of dampers. While many optimal placement methods of linear viscous dampers have been proposed and used, there are only a few methods for MR dampers. Here some optimal location indices for M dampers are proposed, which are similar to those for linear viscous dampers and show how large the structural responses on each floor are. Every time an additional MR damper is implemented, the optimal location index on each floor is measured, and then the next damper is installed on the floor with the maximum location index. In these sequential procedures, the peak interstory drift, the peak interstory velocity and the absolute acceleration of each floor are selected as the optimal location indeices. Four different earthquakes with various scales are loaded to the 20-story nonlinear benchmark building model (Otori et al. 2000, 2002). Passive On/on algorithms are used in order to represent the control algorithm of M dampers.

Optimization of the collocated piezoceramic sensor/actuator placement is investigated numerically and verified experimentally for vibration control of laminated composite plates. The finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite plates with the piezoceramic sensor/actuator. The structural damping index(SDI) is defined from the modal damping(2$\omega$ζ) . It is chosen as the objective function for optimization. Weights for each vibrational mode are taken into account in the SDI calculation. The gradient method is used for the optimization. Optimum location of the piezoceramic sensor/actuator is determined by maximizing the SDI. Numerical simulation and experimental results show that the optimum location of the piezoceramic sensor/actuator is dependent upon the outer layer fiber orientations of the plate, and location and size of the piezoceramic sensor/actuator.

To manage and query moving objects efficiently in MMDBMS, a memory index structure should be used. The most popular index structure for storing trajectories of moving objects is 3DR-tree. The 3DR-tree also can be used for MMDBMS. However, the volume of data can exceed the capacity of physical memory since moving objects report their locations continuously. To accommodate new location reports, old trajectories should be migrated to disk or purged from memory. This paper focuses on migration policies of a main memory index structure. Migration policies consist of two steps: (i) node selection, (ii) node placement. The first step (node selection) selects nodes that should be migrated to disk. The criteria of selection are the performance of insertion or query. The second step (node placement) determines the order of nodes written to disk. This step can be thought as dynamic declustering policies.

The paper presents a multi-objective optimization strategy for a multi-type sensor placement for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of long span bridges. The problem is formulated for simultaneous placement of strain sensors and accelerometers (heterogeneous network) based on application demands for SHM system. Modal Identification (MI) and Accurate Mode Shape Expansion (AMSE) were chosen as the application demands for SHM. The optimization problem is solved through the use of integer Genetic Algorithm (GA) to maximize a common metric to ensure adequate MI and AMSE. The performance of the joint optimization problem solved by GA is compared with other established methods for homogenous sensor placement. The results indicate that the use of a multi-type sensor system can improve the quality of SHM. It has also been demonstrated that use of GA improves the overall quality of the sensor placement compared to other methods for optimization of sensor placement.

The closed-loop state and input observer is a pole-placement type observer and estimates unknown state and input variables simultaneously. Pole-placement type observers may have poor performances with respect to modeling error and sensing bias error. The effects of these ill-conditioning factors must be minimized for the robust performance in designing observers. In this paper, the steady-state performance of the closed-loop state and input observer is investigated quantitatively and is represented as the estimation error bounds. The performance indices are selected from these error bounds and are related to the robustness with respect to modeling errors and sensing bias. By considering both transient and steady-state performance, the main performance index is determined as the condition number of the eigenvector matrix based on $L_2$-norm.

This paper deals with the problem of placement/sizing of distributed piezo actuators to achieve the control objective of vibration suppression. Using the mean square response as a performance index in optimization, we obtain optimal placement and sizing of the actuator. The use of genetic algorithms as a technique for solving optimization problems of placement and sizing is explored. Genetic algorithms are also used for the control strategy. The analysis of the system and response moment equations are carried out by using the Fokker-Planck equation. This paper presents the design and analysis of an active controller and optimal placement/sizing of distributed piezo actuators based on genetic algorithms for a flexible structure under random disturbance, shows numerical example and the result.
