  • In this paper, we propose a parameter-free smoothing method for speckle images, i.e., an adaptive least squares image smoothing technique implemented in a multistep environment. The pertinent smoothing window size at a given pixel is determined by the discontinuity measure which is defined by the ratio of the local variance and mean squares of intensity values of pixels over the smoothing window centered there. The mode of the discontinuity measure at each step is estimated to replace the noise variance parameter that is required in the adaptive smoothing. Computer simulation shows that the proposed multistep technique can smooth homogeneous regions satisfactorily while preserving fine details near boundaries.

  • Integral imaging combined with photon-counting detection has been researched for three-dimensional information sensing under low-light-level conditions. This paper addresses the extraction of distance information with photon-counting integral imaging. The longitudinal distance to the object is obtained utilizing photon-counting elemental images. The pixel disparity is estimated by maximizing the nonlinear correlation of photocounts. The first- and second-order statistical properties of the nonlinear correlation are theoretically derived. In the experiments, these properties are verified by varying the mean number of photocounts in the scene. The average distance is compared to that from the intensity information, showing the robustness of the proposed system even at low photocounts.

  • In the shadow map method, if the shadow map is magnified, the shadow has a jagged silhouette. Herein, we propose a soft shadow method that filters reshaped silhouettes analytically. First, the shadow silhouette is reshaped through sub-texel edge detection, which is based on linear or quadratic curve models. Second, an integral shadow filtering algorithm is used to accurately obtain the average shadow intensity from a definite integral estimation. The implementation demonstrates that our solution can effectively eliminate jagged aliasing and efficiently generate soft shadows.

  • In this work, we suggested the method which improves the efficiency of the face detection algorithm using Pulse-Coupled Neural Network. Face detection algorithm which uses the color information is independent on size, angle, and obstruction of a face. But the use of color information encounters some problems arising from skin-tone color in the background, intensity variation within faces, and presence of random noise, and so on. Depending on these conditions, we obtained the mean and variance of skin-tone colors by experiments. Then we introduce a preprocess that the pixel with a mean value of skin-tone colors has highest level value(255) and the other pixels in the skin-tone region have values between 0 and 255 according to a normal distribution with a variance. This preprocess leads to an easy decision of the linking parameters.

  • The morphological analysis of wear particle is a very effective means for machine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. In order to describe morphology of various wear particle, the wear test was carried oui under friction experimental conditions. And fractal descriptors was applied to boundary and surface of wear particle with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze shape and surface wear particle are share fractal dimension and surface fractal dimension. The boundry fractal dimension can be derived from the boundary profile and surface fractal dimension can be determined b)r sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. The morphology of wear particles can be effectively obtained by two fractal dimensions.

  • A novel fiber-optic sensor system is suggested in which fiber Bragg grating sensors are demodulated by a wavelength-sweeping fiber laser source and a spectrometer. The spectrometer consists of a diffraction grating and a 512-pixel photo-diode array. The reflected Bragg wavelength information is transformed into spatial intensity distribution on the photo-diode array. The peak locations linearly correspond to the Bragg wavelengths, regardless of the nonlinearities in the wavelength tuning mechanism of the fiber laser. The high power density of the fiber laser enables obtaining high signal-to-noise ratio outputs. The improved demodulation characteristics were experimentally demonstrated with a fiber Bragg grating sensor array with 5 gratings. The sensor outputs were in much more linear fashion compared with the conventional tunable band-pass filter demodulation. Also it showed advantages in signal processing, due to the high level of photo-diode array signals, over the broadband light source system, especially in measurement of fast varying dynamic physical quantities.

  • Tooth extraction after head and neck radiotherapy exposes patients to an increased risk for osteoradionecrosis of the jaw. This study reports the results of a radiographic analysis of bone neoformation after tooth extraction in a case series of patients who underwent radiation therapy. No patients developed osteoradionecrosis within a follow-up of 1 year. Complete mucosal repair was observed 30 days after surgery, while no sign of bone formation was observed 2 months after the dental extractions. Pixel intensity and fractal dimension image analyses only showed significant bone formation 12 months after the tooth extractions. These surgical procedures must follow a strict protocol that includes antibiotic prophylaxis and therapy and complete wound closure, since bone formation at the alveolar socket occurs at a slower pace in patients who have undergone head and neck radiotherapy.

  • Recently, with the development of technology, computer vision research based on the human visual system has been actively conducted. Saliency maps have been used to highlight areas that are visually interesting within the image, but they can suffer from low performance due to external factors, such as an indistinct background or light source. In this study, existing color, brightness, and contrast feature maps are subjected to multiple shape and orientation filters and then connected to a fully connected layer to determine pixel intensities within the image based on location-based weights. The proposed method demonstrates better performance in separating the background from the area of interest in terms of color and brightness in the presence of external elements and noise. Location-based weight normalization is also effective in removing pixels with high intensity that are outside of the image or in non-interest regions. Our proposed method also demonstrates that multi-filter normalization can be processed faster using parallel processing.

  • Many of non-contact measuring systems are used to estimate surface characteristics owing to their advantages of high speed and undanaged test. In this paper, a new measuring system is proposed to acquire image from CCD camera through back light illumination. Lowpass filter is very useful in view of noise removal and optimum binary image can be made through histogram equalization which is one of the histogram technique to maximize brightness intensity between workpiece and background. Laplacian operator is used to detect workpiece edge from binary image. In case of image treatment applying Laplacian operator, surface roughness is calculated by introducing conversion coefficient for coordinate of pixel which edge is composed of. In summary, the work is concerned with the development of a new technique for roughness measurement by the image processing in turning.
