A new texture segmentation-based image coding technique which performs segmentation based on roughness of textural regions and properties of the human visual system (HVS) is presented. This method solves the problems of a segmentation-based image coding technique with constant segments by proposing a methodology for segmenting an image texturally homogeneous regions with respect to the degree of roughness as perceived by the HVS. The fractal dimension is used to measure the roughness of the textural regions. The segmentation is accomplished by thresholding the fractal dimension so that textural regions are classified into three texture classes; perceived constant intensity, smooth texture, and rough texture. An image coding system with high compression and good image quality is achieved by developing an efficient coding technique for each segment boundary and each texture class. For the boundaries, a binary image representing all the boundaries is created. For regions belonging to perceived constant intensity, only the mean intensity values need to be transmitted. The smooth and rough texture regions are modeled first using polynomial functions, so only the coefficients characterizing the polynomial functions need to be transmitted. The bounda-ries, the means and the polynomial functions are then each encoded using an errorless coding scheme. Good quality reconstructed images are obtained with about 0.08 to 0.3 bit per pixel for three different types of imagery ; a head and shoulder image with little texture variation, a complex image with many edges, and a natural outdoor image with highly textured areas.
Urban environment represent one of the most dynamic regions on earth. As in other countries, forests, green areas, agricultural lands are rapidly changing into residential or industrial areas in South Korea. Monitoring such rapid changes in land use requires rapid data acquisition, and satellite imagery can be an effective method to this demand. In general, SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites acquire images with an active system, so the brightness of the image is determined by the surface roughness. Therefore, the water areas appears dark due to low reflection intensity, In the residential area where the artificial structures are distributed, the brightness value is higher than other areas due to the strong reflection intensity. If we use these characteristics of SAR images, settlement areas can be extracted efficiently. In this study, extraction of settlement areas was performed using TerraSAR-X of German high-resolution X-band SAR satellite and KOMPSAT-5 of South Korea, and object-oriented image classification method using the image segmentation technique is applied for extraction. In addition, to improve the accuracy of image segmentation, the speckle divergence was first calculated to adjust the reflection intensity of settlement areas. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the two satellite images, settlement areas are classified by applying a pixel-based K-means image classification method. As a result, in the case of TerraSAR-X, the accuracy of the object-oriented image classification technique was 88.5%, that of the pixel-based image classification was 75.9%, and that of KOMPSAT-5 was 87.3% and 74.4%, respectively.
In Korea, the guideline for the bridge safety inspection requests to assess surface degradation, including crack, efflorescence, spalling, and so on, for the rating of concrete bridges. Currently, the assessment of efflorescence is performed based on the visual inspection of expertized engineers, which may result in subjective inspection result. In this study, a novel method using a hyperspectral camera is proposed for objective and accurate assessment of concrete efflorescence. The hyperspectral camera acquires the light intensity for a number of continuous spectral bands of light for each pixel in an image, which makes the hyperspectral imaging technique provides more detailed information than a color camera that collects intensity for only three bands corresponding to RGB (red, green, and blue) colors. A stepwise assessment algorithm is proposed based on the spectral features to decompose efflorescence area from the inspected concrete area. The algorithm is tested in the laboratory test using two concrete specimens, one of which is dark colored with efflorescence on a surface while the other is bright concrete without efflorescence. The test shows high accuracy and applicability of the proposed efflorescence assessment using a hyperspectral camera.
This study proposed a face region detection algorithm using fuzzy inference of pixel hue and intensity. The proposed algorithm is composed of light compensate and face detection. The light compensation process performs calibration for the change of light. The face detection process evaluates similarity by generating membership functions using as feature parameters hue and intensity calculated from 20 skin color models. From the extracted face region candidate, the eyes were detected with element C of color model CMY, and the mouth was detected with element Q of color model YIQ, the face region was detected based on the knowledge of an ordinary face. The result of experiment are conducted with frontal face color images of face as input images, the method detected the face region regardless of the position and size of face images.
In-situ measurements are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and limited in their ability to observe currents with spatial variations in the surf zone. This paper proposes an optical image-based method of measurement of currents in the surf zone. This method measures nearshore currents by tracking in time wave breaking-induced foam patches from sequential images. Foam patches in images tend to be arrayed with irregular pixel intensity values, which are likely to remain consistent for a short period of time. This irregular intensity feature of a foam patch is characterized and represented as a keypoint using an image-based object recognition method, i.e., Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT). The keypoints identified by the SIFT method are traced from time sequential images to produce instantaneous velocity fields. In order to remove erroneous velocities, the instantaneous velocity fields are filtered by binding them within upper and lower limits, and averaging the velocity data in time and space with a certain interval. The measurements that are obtained by this method are comparable to the results estimated by an existing image-based method of observing currents, named the Optical Current Meter (OCM).

A hue-based noise-tolerant corner detector is proposed for the exact detection of the real corners in spite of the shadows and random noise. Based on the fact that the hue gradient at the border of the opaque objects' shadow is smaller than the intensity gradient in HSI (hue-saturation-intensity) color space, the effects of shadow are eliminated by introducing the hue-weighted combination of vector gradient to the proposed corner detector. Furthermore, the proposed corner detector is robust to random noise by offsetting the contribution to the corner candidate when the polarities of the color gradients of the pixel pairs are out of phase each other. Results of the experiment show that the proposed corner detector can effectively detect the real corners.

The fractal-based method for describing rubbed surface texture has aroused great interest. The determination of rubbed surface topography is believed to be extremely important in the areas of contact mechanics, adhesion and friction. In order to describe topography of the rubbed surface, the wear test was carried out with annular surfaces of wear testing specimens in dry friction. furthermore, the relation between the fractal dimensions and the frictional conditions are also investigated and fractal descriptors was applied to rubbed surface with image processing. Fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of image surface pixel. Fractal dimension increased according as the applied load and sliding distance increase. Topography of the rubbed surface can be effectively obtained by fractal dimensions.
One most feasible way to measure the concentration field in the micro-channel is using micro-LIF(Laser Induced Fluorescence) method. However, an accurate concentration field at a given cross plane in a micro-channel has not been successfully achieved so far due to various limitations in the light illumination and fluorescence signal detection. The present study demonstrates a novel method to provide an ultra thin laser sheet beam having five(5) microns thickness by use of a micro focus laser line generator. The laser sheet beam illuminates an exact plane of concentration measurement field to increase the signal to noise ratio and considerably reduce the depth uncertainty. Nile Blue A was used as fluorescent dye for the present LIF measurement. The enhancement of the fluorescent intensity signals was performed by a solvent mixture of water $(95\%)$ and ethanol (EtOH)/methanol (MeOH) $(5\%)$ mixture. To reduce the rms errors resulted from the CCD electronic noise and other sources, an expansion of grid size was attempted from $1\times1$ to 3(3 or 5(5 pixel data windows and the pertinent signal-to-noise level has been noticeably increased accordingly.

Mobile devices are becoming powerful enough to realize augmented reality (AR) application. This paper introduces two AR methods to estimate an environmental illumination distribution of a scene. In the first method, we extract the lighting direction and intensity from input images captured with a front-side camera of a mobile device, using its orientation sensor. The second method extracts shadow regions cast by three dimensional (3D) AR marker of known shape and size. Because previous methods examine per pixel shadow intensity, their performances are much affected by the number of sampling points, positions, and threshold values. By using a simple binary operation between the previously clustered shadow regions and the threshold real shadow regions, we can compute efficiently their relative area proportions according to threshold values. This area-based method can overcome point sampling problem and threshold value selection. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed methods generate natural image with multiple smooth shadows in real-time.
