  • 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate known as efficient biomass pretreatment reagent was used for the extraction of lignin from rigida pine wood (pitch pine), which was called to ionic liquid lignin (ILL), and chemical structural features of ILL were compared with the corresponding milled wood lignin (MWL). The amounts of phenolic hydroxyl groups (Phe-OH) was determined to 10.0% for ILL and 7.2% for MWL, respectively, where those of methoxyl groups (OMe) were 4.9% for ILL and 11.0% for MWL, respectively. The weight average molecular weight (Mw) of ILL (3,995) were determined to ca. 1/2 of that of MWL (8,438) and polydispersity index (PDI: Mw/Mn) suggested that the lignin fragments were more uniform in the ILL (PDI 1.36) than in the MWL (PDI 2.64). The temperature (Tm) corresponding to maximum decomposition rate (Vm) of ILL ($306.6^{\circ}C$) was ca. $35^{\circ}C$ lower than that of MWL ($341.9^{\circ}C$), suggesting that ILL was thermally unstable than MWL, as evidence from the lower Tm for ILL. Moreover, the structural characteristics of ILL and MWL were confirmed by spectroscopic analyses (FT-IR and $^{13}C$-NMR), and these results indicated ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate) was chemically or physically bound to ILL.

  • Both the control and heated specimen of oak, hornbean, alder, poplar, red pine and pitch pine among domestic commercial species and taun imported were used for radial and tangential shrinkage and movement that occurred on changing the relative humidity of the atmosphere from 90 percent to 60 percent at $25^{\circ}C$. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The radial and tangential shrinkage of the control and heated hornbean and oak wood, except alder, of high specific gravity showed greater than species with low specific gravity. The ratio of tangential to radial shrinkage was 1.46 for taun to 2.70 for alder. Green volume specific gravity of the heated and soaked specimen of all species except poplar decreased 1.5 to 3.1 percent. Shrinkage of the heated specimen increased more than that of the control specimen, and antishrink efficiency of all timbers except alder had negative value. Shrinkage from green to air dry of treated specimens increased more than case of total shrinkage, and radial shrinkage of those specimen increased greater than tangential shrinkage. 3. The movement of the heating specimen for 120 hours decreased than those of the control and the heating specimen for 240 hours. The movement of heating oak, poplar, red pine and pitch pine (or 240 hours increased rather than those of the control specimen.

  • The objective of this study was to manufacture the wood based roughage using lumber from thinning of oak and pitch pine (Pinus rigida). And the study also aimed to investigate a feed value evaluation of wood based roughages. To investigate the optimization condition of steam-digestion treatment for roughage, the wood chips of oak and pitch pine were steam-digestion treated at $160^{\circ}C$ under pressure 6 atm depending on treatment times (60 min, 90 min and 120 min) followed by the content of essential oils analyzed. The essential oil content of steam-digestion treated roughages for 90 min and 120 min were under 0.1 mL/kg. The evaluation of feed value was carried out from steam-digestion treated roughages for 90 min through feed chemical composition analysis, NRC (National research Council) modeling, ruminal degradability analysis and relative economic value analysis. The feed chemical compositions including DM (dry mater), CP (crude protein), EE (ether extract), NDF (neutral detergent fiber), ADF (acid detergent fiber), ADL (acid detergent lignin), NFC (nonfiber carbohydrate) in oak roughage were 95.4, 1.36, 3.11, 90.05, 83.85, 17.33, 6.50%, respectively, and in pitch pine roughage were 94.37, 1.33, 5.48, 87.89, 86.88, 30.56, 6.32%, respectively. Both roughages showed low level of protein and very high level of NDF. The TDN (total digestible nutrient) levels using NRC (2001) model in oak and pitch pine roughages were 40.55, 31.22%, respectively. The ruminal in situ dry matter degradability was higher in oak roughage (23.84%) than in pitch pine roughage (10.02%). The economic values of oak and pitch pine rough-ages were 235, and 210 \, respectively.

  • The feasibility of treating three softwood(Japanese larch pitch pine, and Korean pine) thinned logs by double-diffusion treatment processes was investigated. Some posts were incised before immersion, and others were imersed in hot copper sulfate solution. Comparison among species indicated that. in general, pitch pine was most treatable and Japanese larch least treatable. For all three species, almost all treatment schedules gave consistently good penetration and high net retention, but very steep gradient of preservative distribution. As expected, the treatability was increased by the extension of immersion time, increased concentration of treating solution, incising. and heating of the first solution. Of the variables tested, it appears that heating of the first solution is the most important. From the data in this paper, it may be concluded that, if the first solution is not heated, the best schedule is #3. If the first solution is healed. it appears the best schedules are #10 or #11. Since heating of the first solution improves the treatability. schedules # 10 or :#11 are recommended if the cost of heating might be justified. The data presented in this paper indicate that double-diffusion treatment processes seem to offer a promise as a comparatively effective and easy-operating method of treating thinned logs for the small-scale production of treated stock.

  • The optimal woodchip production system was developed and the production cost of a forest woodchip fuel was calculated for utilizing the pitch pine, which covers around 480,000ha nationwide. the marginal price of the woodchip fuel considering the factor of supply price, electricity and heat selling price as well as capacity factor were suggested and the economic sensitivity analysis was conducted for various scenario. The most important variable which determine economic feasibility was a fuel cost for the power generation facility. If the electricity price is higher than the current SMP(System Marginal Price) or the capacity factor is higher than 80%, there fully is a benefit to consume the woodchip fuels produced in the suggested production system in this study. In addition, the additional benefit becomes more obvious when considering REC(Renewable Energy Certificate) and CDM(Clean Development Mechanism). Therefore, it is strongly suggested for domestic power generation sector to utilize the forest biomass fuel to achieve the obligatory target of RPS.

  • The object is to optimize the best condition of organosolv pretreatment process with sulfuric acid as a catalyst. As a material, Pitch pine (Pinus rigida) was ground and sieved through 40-mesh screen, and Celluclast and $\beta$-glucosidase were used as enzymes for enzymatic hydrolysis. Pretreatment processes were carried out in the minibomb, and 20 g of materials with 200 ml of 50% ethanol solution (v/v) with 1% sulfuric acid as a catalyst. Pretreatment temperature was varied from $150^{\circ}C$ to $190^{\circ}C$, and time was varied from 0 to 20 min. Then, residual materials were used for enzymatic hydrolysis. The best conditions were selected by estimating followed enzymatic hydrolysis rate and degradable rates after pretreatment process. The highest value of enzymatic hydrolysis rate was obtained as 55 - 60% at 160 and at $180^{\circ}C$, but the value decreased under more severe conditions. As the residual rates decreased under severe conditions, it infered that the decrease of sugar contents limits enzymatic hydrolysis rates. Combined with enzymatic hydrolysis rate, degradable rates and H-factors, the temperatures at $160^{\circ}C$ for 20 min and at $180^{\circ}C$ for 0 min were concluded as the optimized conditions where have the lowest H-factor value for considering energy input.
