  • This study was performed to investigate the behavior of vapor phase of fuel mixtures with different piston bowl shapes(F, B, and R-type) in a optically accessible engine. The images of liquid and vapor phases were captured in the motoring engine using exciplex fluorescence method. Fuel was injected into atmospheric nitrogen to prevent quenching phenomenon by oxygen. Injection pressure is 5.1MPa. Two dimensional spray fluorescence image of vapor phases was acquired to analyze spray behaviors and fuel distribution inside of cylinder. Four injection timings were set at BTDC $90^{\circ},\;80^{\circ},\;70^{\circ},\;and\;60^{\circ}$. With a fuel injection timing of BTDC $90^{\circ}$, fuel-rich mixture level in the center region was highest in a B-type piston. With a fuel injection timing of BTDC $60^{\circ}$, R-type piston was best. R-type piston shape was suitable under enhanced swirl ratio and late injection condition and B-type piston shape was right in a weak swirl ratio. It was found that the piston bowl shape affected the mixture stratification inside of cylinder.

  • This paper presents a research about free piston linear engine (FPLE) fueled with hydrogen, in which, the numerical models are built to simulate the operation during the full stroke of the engine. Dynamic model, linear alternator model and thermodynamic model are used as the numerical models to predict piston velocity, in-cylinder pressure and electric power of FPLE. The spark timing and air gap length are changed to provide information for the prediction. Beside, the heat transfer problem is also investigated in the paper. The results of research are divided by two parts, including motoring mode and firing mode. The result of motoring mode showed that there is validation between simulation and experiment for volume and pressure in cylinder. For firing mode, by increasing spark timing, the velocity of piston, peak pressure and electric power also increase respectively. Beside, when increasing air gap length, the electric power increases accordingly while the motion of piston is not symmetric. The effect of heat transfer also observed clearly by reducing of the peak pressure, velocity of piston and electric power.

  • Combustion chamber crevices in SI engines are identified as the largest contributor to the engine-out hydrocarbon emissions. The largest of crevice region is the piston ring pack crevice. To predict and understand the oxidation process of piston crevice hydrocarbons, a 3-dimensional numerical simulation method was developed. A engine shaped computational mesh with moving grid for piston and valve motions was constructed. And a 4-step oxidation model involving 7 species was used and the 16 coefficients in the rate expressions were optimized based on the results from a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism for the oxidation condition of engine combustion chamber. Propane was used as a fuel in order to eliminate oil layer absorption and liquid fuel effect.

  • There are many factors which influence on the performance of a diesel engine. The piston bowl shape and swirl ratio are important factors to enhance the fuel-air mixing and flame propagation. In this study, calculations of the flow field in the cylinder of the diesel engine were carried out using the CONCHAS-SPRAY code for different bowl shapes and swirl ratios. In the case of constant swirl ratio, vortices which affect fuel-air mixing, evaporation and flame propagation are generated more strongly and consistently in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber than in the flat piston type. With this strong squish effect, injected fuel droplets are widely diffused and rapidly evaporated in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber. Especially a strong squish is developed and large and strong vortices are generated in the edge cutted bowl piston chamber. As the swirl ratio increases, it is found that a large and strong squish and vortices are generated in the combustion chamber and also fuel droplets are diffused into the entire combustion chamber.

  • The friction loss between piston rings and cylinder liner is due to the tension of the piston rings. Lubricant is usually supplied to reduce the friction. However, the sliding speed of the piston varies during the reciprocating cycle and is very low near TDC(Top Dead Center)/BDC(Bottom Dead Center), where the hydrodynamic lubrication cannot be sustained. Since the lubrication regime is shifted from the hydrodynamic to the boundary lubrication near TDC/BDC, wear particles are easily generated so that the friction loss becomes bigger and bigger due to the plowing effect of wear particles. In this study, for the purpose of reducing the friction loss, an undulated surface is adopted to the cylinder liner to trap wear particles. The friction force variations, which are measured by strain gaged, show that the concept of undulated surface is one of the promising methods to effectively reduce the friction between piston rings and cylinder liner.

  • Recently, wash plate type hydraulic axial piston motors are being in extensively used in the world, because of simple design, lightweight, effective cost. But the structural problem of swash plate type hydraulic axial piston motor is the limited angle of swash plate and lateral force having a undesirable effect in piston. To solve these problems. a connecting rod mechanism. which is commonly used in hent axis type motors, is considered to be applied the swash plate cype motor. In this paper, kinematic analysis is done on the connecting rod mechanism. A series of formula are derived and numerical calculations are done for a set of motor parameters.

  • The distribution of oil film thickness in piston were measured by induced fluorescence method. A Xe lamp was used as light source. Coumarine-6 was mixed with oil as the fluorescent dye. Fluorescent signal which is proportional to the oil film thickness was acquired by CCD camera and transmitted to the personal computer as video signal. In order to solve the problem of measurement system, irregular distribution and unstability of light intensity, as well as to know the relationship between the oil film thickness and output signal, three different calibration techniques were used. Motoring and firing tests were performed in a single cylinder research engine with transparent liner. By analyzing the oil film thickness converted from the photographed image, it was observed that each of three piston rings scrapes the oil both upward and downward and oil film thickness is not uniform horizontally at a given piston land. The amount of oil in each land was considerably affected by the engine load. It is thought that the blow-by gas blows the oil down to the crankcase.

  • A friction force measurement system using the floating liner method was developed to study the frictional behavior of piston rings. The measurement system was carefully designed to control the effect of the piston secondary motion and the temperature of cylinder wall and oil. The friction force between the barrel shaped piston ring and the cylinder liner, was measured under the condition of flooded oil supply. The measured friction forces were classified into five frictional modes with regard to the combination of predominant lubrication regimes(boundary, mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication) and stroke regions(midstroke and dead centers). The modes could be identified on the Stribeck diagram of the friction coefficients and the dimensionless number of ㎼/p, where the friction coefficients are evaluated at near the midstroke and dead centers.

  • In order to investigate the relationship between the ring gap ratio and oil consumption, the axial motion of piston ring was measured by capacitance technique. The pressures of each land and the motions of each ring were calculated by orifice-volume method in which it is assumed that the ring gaps are the only gas leakage paths. The calculated results were compared with the measured ones. Consequently, it is known that the increase of ring gap ratio has the effect of lifting the first ring. The calculated results were roughly in accordance with those measured. Therefore, it is possible to predict the effect of design variables on the pattern of ring motion. It is known that the lift off of first ring accompanied by the increase of ring gap ratio make rise of oil consumption.

  • The wide open throttle performance and piston temperatures were measured by the change of fuel : gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas(LPG). Bench test method was developed and experimented to study the effect of temperature on the formation of carbon deposit. The bench test results were confirmed by measuring the piston temperature and observing the deposit production rate at an actual engine running condition. Results show that if the fuel of spark ignition engine is changed from gasoline to LPG, the output power decreases about 10% and the piston temperatures increase about 40~55$^{\circ}C$. In actual engine tests, because of this temperature increase, it was observed that the quantity of carbon deposit in the top ring groove increased in a big degree. Consuquently, it is known that the fing sticking may occur if the gasoline engine was rebuilt to LPG fuelled engine. Therefore, in order to preserve the durability of LPG fuelled engine, it is necessary to lower the piston temperature by hardware modificationor to reduce the carbon deposit by the improvement of engine oil.
