The Study on the Dynamics and Friction Characteristics of Piston Skirt with Consideration of Mixed Lubrication

  • This paper reports on the dynamics and friction characteristics of piston skirt with consideration of mixed lubrication. Piston skirt is an important part of the engine that transforms fuel into mechanical energy. The durability and low friction characteristics are important recent issues in piston skirt design. In this paper, the piston skirt motion is analyzed with consideration of mixed lubrication and piston skirt tilting motion. The entire trajectory of piston motion is obtained by using transient numerical method. Also various parameter studies are performed for piston skirt design and the development of lower frictional engine.

  • A piston assembly is very important because it directly receives the energy generated during combustion process. Surely, the friction and lubrication of piston-ring pack do an important role in the performance and fuel economy of an engine. In fact, the friction loss in piston-ring pack is the biggest portion to the whole engine friction. Therefore, the improvement of lubrication quality and friction loss in piston-ring pack will be directly related with the improvement in the performance and fuel economy of an engine. Meanwhile, the oil consumption and blow-by gas through piston-cylinder-ring crevices have to be controlled as less as possible. In these two aspects, the study on the optimized design of piston-ring pack has to be carried out. In this study, for the efficient design of piston-ring pack, it is focused to develop a basic computer program that predicts the inter-ring pressure, the motion of ring and the blow-by gas through a crevice volume model between adjacent rings, and the oil film thickness and the friction computed by lubrication theories.

  • This paper considers analysis of the lubrication between the piston ring and the cylinder liner. Piston ring lubrication analysis considering oil transport is important because oil consumption is an essential factor to design the piston assembly. To develop the lubrication analysis program for the piston ring, oil continuity condition and open-end boundary assumption are used for computational boundaries. Results show that oil continuity can be almost satisfied at any crank angle in and out of the piston ring clearance. Therefore the amount of oil consumption and the dynamic behavior of ring pack can be estimated using this algorithm. And it can be known that the effective width may be smaller than the full width of the piston ring, so oil starvation condition should be considered for the lubrication analysis of the piston ring.

  • A friction tester to measure friction force generated at the interface between the piston ring and the cylinder liner was developed. Modified piston ring is bar-shaped and 100mm long. Surface of the modified piston ring is machined by the profile grinding machine to be formed as a shape of an arc of a circle. Measured data are treated as mean effective friction force and power loss. From this test it can be confirmed that friction force is deeply affected by surface shape of the piston ring and viscosity of supplied oil. Friction force is deeply affected by surface shape of the piston ring and viscosity of supplied oil. Friction force is decreased and power loss is increased with increasing velocity. And it is known that region of mixed lubrication is broader than estimated with theoretical analysis. it is expected that this tester can be used as the optimization tool of the surface shape of the piston ring at the first stage of development of the piston rings.

A Study on the Characteristics of Volumetric Efficiency of an Axial Piston Pump considering Piston Tilting

  • This paper presents the characteristics of volumetric efficiency of an axial type piston pump considering the piston tilting. A numerical analysis is carried out in order to obtain the pressure distribution considering the fluid inertia at the notch of the valve plate. The cylinder pressure variation and the discharge flow rate are measured experimentally according to the operating conditions such as supply pressure, rotational speed, and viscosity of the working fluid by using the cam type test apparatus. Leakage is also measured considering piston tilting. The characteristics of the volumetric efficiency are analyzed with respect to various operating conditions and leakage is also analyzed according to the piston tilting angle. Results are applicable to improve the design of an axial type piston pump.

  • A numerical analysis between the piston and cylinder in swash plate type hydraulic piston pumps under reciprocating motion is presented. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are used simultaneously to solve the Reynolds equation In the clearance and the equation of motion for the piston. The tapered piston showed stable behaviors regardless of their initial eccentric conditions in the clearance and the reciprocating speed affect highly on the piston end trajectories. Therefore, the results of present study can be used other types fluid machineries.

  • It is important not only to reduce the casting defects of piston but also to improvement in the mechanical properties(hardness) of piston for the air compressor. The blow hole is typical casting defects in the conventional cast of aluminium alloy(AC8A-T6) piston. Because of the heat treatment method, mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy for piston was decided on the heat treatment method and cycle. Therefore, we tested on the development of mechanical properties and on the casting defects of piston for the air compressor in accordance with the heat treatment and casting condition. After the heat treatment and casting was carried out as several times, and was compared with the imported piston. As a result of several investigations; microstructure, hardness and casting defects of piston was changed under the influence of the heat treatment and casting method. When the cooling rate was controlled and the uni-cast method used, it bas the same mechanical properties and microstructure.

  • The hydraulic piston using a hydrostatic bearing has been used widely due to its satisfying performance at very high pressurized circumstance and relative higher power density in comparison to conventional one. For high pressurization, enhanced efficiency and long durability of the hydraulic piston, the design of hydrostatic bearing is at issue, which is installed between piston shoe and swash plate. The performance of the hydrostatic bearing is influenced significantly by the assembly of the piston shoe consisting of circular land and recess. In this study, to estimate the performance of the hydrostatic bearing, the characteristics for lubrication of the assembly of the piston shoe were investigated by measuring a leakage rate of hydraulic fluid under an experimental condition, where a rotating velocity of the piston, hydraulic pressure and temperature of the hydraulic fluid were changed systematically. In addition, a film thickness of the hydraulic fluid on the piston shoe was measured and compared to theoretical one.

  • Surface hardness is one of the major sources on wear in the oil hydraulic axial piston pump. To increase the performance of the oil hydraulic axial piston pump, it is need to know the surface layer characteristics in the sliding contact parts of them. This paper reports an experimental study on surface treatment characteristics in the piston of the oil hydraulic axial piston pump. We investigated surface wear with not only surface hardness and surface roughness but also material of the piston. We obviously observed that the surface hardness of piston in the oil hydraulic axial piston pump plays an important role to high power density and remain long life.

  • In this paper, an experimental study has been carried out to develop an aluminum forged piston which has good mechanical properties. Through the experiment, the cavity filling, microstructure and mechanical properties of the final product are investigated with respect to chosen process parameters, which are die shape, heat-treatment condition and preform shape. The mechanical properties of the forged piston are compared with these of the cast piston. As the results, an appropriate die-shape is obtained to produce a perfect piston. The suitable heat-treatment condition and preform-shape are found to good hardness and minute microstructure in the forged piston. And we could obtain the mechanical properties(tensile strength, elongation and hardness) of the forged piston are superior to these of the cast piston.
