  • A huge number of carbon steel piping components installed in the secondary system of nuclear power plants are exposed to aging mechanisms such as FAC (Flow-Accelerated Corrosion), Cavitation, Flashing, and LDIE (Liquid Droplet Impingement Erosion). Those aging mechanisms can lead to thinning of the piping components. To manage the wall thinning degradation, most of utilities in the world predict the wall thinning rate based on the computational program such as CHECWORKS, COMSY, and BRT-CICERO, evaluate the UT (Ultrasonic Test) data, and determine next inspection timing, repair or replacement, if needed. There are several evaluation methods, such as band, blanket, and strip methods, commonly used for determining the wear of piping components from single UT inspection data. It has been identified that those single UT evaluation methods not only do not consider the manufacturing features of pipes, but also may exclude the data of the most thinned point when determining the representative wear rate of piping components. This paper describes a newly developed single UT evaluation method, E-Cross method, for solving above problems and introduces application examples for several pipes and elbows. It was identified that the E-Cross method using the length and width of UT data excluded the most thinned points appropriate as the single UT evaluation method for thinned piping components.

  • In general, pipelines at nuclear power plants are affected by various types of degradation mechanisms and may be ruptured after gradually thinning. FAC (Flow-Accelerated Corrosion) is typical aging mechanism affecting the secondary side piping system. In Korea nuclear power plants, CHECWORKS program have been used for management of wall thinning damages. However, sometimes, CHECWORKS program shows wrong results at the stage of NFA (Network Flow Analysis) in case of complex pipelines. This paper describes the calculation results of pressure drop in a complex pipeline and single line by using the CHECWORKS program and the analysis results are compared with those of engineering calculation results including errors between them.

  • High temperature and high pressure heavy water flows through the pipes in atomic power plants. The curved parts of pipes are critical parts in that they change the direction of steam flow, and these parts are especially affected by severe wear. Therefore, most pipes in atomic power plants are tested by non-destructive examination by workers who use ultrasonic sensors to measure the wall thickness of pipes. But not only are these pipes located in a very dangerous environment, but the space is also very limited. For the safety of workers, it is necessary to design a device that uses a mobile robot that can inspect curved pipes. This paper presents the design and construction of a small device that can generate the necessary contact forces between ultrasonic sensors and pipe walls in a limited space. And a mobile robot is used in place ortho worker for successful non-destructive examination.

  • CFD analysis was performed to figure out flow behavior in the inlet plenum of new research reactor where coolant is injected to the flow tubes with the fuel assembly. The computation results showed that large-scale vortices are generated in the inlet plenum by flow stream injected from inlet pipe. These vortices are divided into small vortices and reversed their revolution. They may lead to flow-induced vibration of fuel assembly, moreover, which has been regarded as a cause of fretting wear of fuel assembly. Also there is an another important thing that average velocity of each flow-tube is uneven showing difference in maximum 18%. So it has been suggested that perforated baffle will be installed to prevent the formation of vortex in the inlet plenum. Two perforated baffles, one is flow skirt and the other is muffler type flow straightener, were proposed and their effect was evaluated using commercial CFD code, Fluent. According to CFD analysis for two perforated baffles, it was confirmed that both of them can prevent or reduce vortex formation in the inlet plenum and make average velocity of each flow tube more even.

  • A prototype of combustion zone monitoring system as been developed and installed into tuyeres of the blast furnace. The system consists of CCD(charge coupled device) cameras, sonic flow meters, an image processor and a personal computer. The personal computer collects raceway luminance data and operational data from the image processor that is connected to the color CCD camera from the blast furnace process computer, respectively. In addition, the sonic flow meters supply coal injection rate data to the personal computer. Then, the personal computer evaluates the combustion conditions with the raceway inspection algorithm. This integrated monitoring system allows us to detect abnormal raceway conditions and the clogging status of coal injection pipe. The image processing techniques of the system enable us to effectively monitor unburnt coal sticking to tuyere tip and injection lance wear conditions. Such a developed system ensures rapid and precise raceway inspection. The image processing capability of the system has helped operator to early detect both the unburnt coal sticking problem and the errosion problem of injection lance. Furthermore, the system could control the abnormal raceway condition based the the analysis results obtained from combustion monitoring.

  • There are many case studies and application cases in abandoned mines for hydraulic filling method filled by slurry or paste form, but research on the pneumatic filling is not applied in Korea. The damage of steel pipe is occurred by wear due to the flow of filling material in the bent area of steel pipe in traditional pneumatic filling method. In this study, the new pneumatic filling method was developed using a newly devised improved nozzle to improve the above problem. The model test for mine filling was performed in the laboratory for the simulated accessible or inaccessible mine cavities, and the filling efficiency by the results obtained from the test was calculated. The filling efficiency was analyzed from the variation of outlet angle, feed rate and grain size of sand in model test of simulated accessible mine cavity. The superiority of improved pneumatic filling method was proved through the analysis of filling efficiency by the results obtained from each model tests of gravitational, traditional, and improved filling method in simulated inaccessible mine cavity.

  • It is of great economic importance to minimize the cylinder wear and the consumption rate of cylinder oil in a large two-stroke diesel engine. The motor-driven cylinder lubricator was first developed fur a large two-stroke marine diesel engine made in $W{\ddot{a}}rtsil{\ddot{a}}a$ Switzerland Ltd. by the joint research of industry-university. In this study, the effects of revolution speed, plunger stroke and cylinder back pressure on maximum discharge and delivery pressures, delivery delay duration, and oil feed rate are experimentally investigated by the home-manufactured cylinder lubricator. The maximum discharge pressure with a spot of 0.03 m and the maximum loss pressure at spots of 5, 6.78 and i 0 m away from the end of lubricator slot are increased as plunger stroke, revolution speed and back pressure are elevated, and the delivery delay duration is shortened as plunger stroke, revolution speed and oil pipe length are increased. Also, oil feed rate is increased as plunger stroke and revolution speed are raised, but lowered as the back pressure is increased.

  • The desulfurizers facility is cylindrical shape. To operate properly it needs nozzles cleaned, get rid of lime adhesion and sludge, repair the wear and corrosion of facility regularly. For this purpose, workers shall access the ceiling or vertical wall at high place. Ordinary scaffoldings such as steel pipe scaffolding or system scaffolding have been using so that workers can access them. With these ordinary scaffoldings, openings around cylindrical wall are inevitable which make workers can expose always to the risk of falling. The purpose of this study is to develop customized scaffolding to minimize the openings to prevent workers form falling during maintenance it. It consists of a hexagonal central tower and six trapezoidal outer towers. And the bracing among the towers have connected each other for self-standing and for maintaining the structure of towers. Span decks, the circumference footstools, steps, etc. are laid on each floor. The safety is reviewed by structural analysis and performance test. With this study, openings each floor of this scaffold are removed. The gap between the cylindrical wall and the edge of the work stage is approximately 100 mm. Therefore, we expect that workers can work safely and efficiently.
