To investigate anticariogenic effects of extracts from pine needles and twigs, we measured the extracts' antimicrobial activities against Streptococcus mutans, their glucosyltransferase (GTase) inhibitory effects and their stabilities under various conditions of heat and pH. The 70% ethanol extracts of pine needles and twigs showed greater antimicrobial activities against S. mutans than the hot water extracts, and the pine twig extracts showed greater antimicrobial activity than the pine needle extracts. More specifically, the n-hexane fractions of the pine needles and twigs had the greatest effects against S. mutans, and their minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) was 0.6 mg/mL. The results of the extracts' GTase inhibitory effects indicated that the 70% ethanol extracts had greater effects than hot water extracts, and the pine twig extracts showed greater effects than the pine needle extracts. The antimicrobial activity against S. mutans for the pine needle n-hexane traction was greatly reduced as temperature increased, and was also largely affected by changes in pH. These results suggest that extracts from pine needles and twigs have anticariogenic effects and could be used as anticariogenic food additives.

Pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is one of the most serious pests of pine tree. Trunk injection of some nematicides in tree is well known as an effective control method. However there are some limitating factors which hindering the efficacy of trunk injection in field or potted tree. In this study we suggested easy and useful alternative screening methods of nematicides against PWN. Reproduction of PWN was influenced by tree twig moisture (high reproduction in high moisture trig) and paraffin coating was 78.6% reduced moisture loss in tested twig. There were no reproduction different in up and down site from infection site of twig at 1 month after inoculation of PWN and also distance (5 and 10 cm) from inoculation site of PWN did not influence the reproduction of PWN. Numbers of reproduced PWN were higher with decreasing diameter of twig. Numbers of reproduced PWN were similar to P. thunbergii and P. densiflora. However reproduction was increased depending on high inoculation density and longer propagation period. When inoculation of PWN on cut twig injected with emamectin benzoate 2.15% EC and morantel tartrate 8% SL in trunk of Pinus thunbergii in the field, PWN number were significantly reduced than untreated control. We suggest this screening method for PWN control agents.
Although Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) forests near temples are valuable as forests of the cultural landscape, they are likely to be deteriorated because of vegetation succession and climate changes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the vegetation structure, the pine vitality, and the site environmental characteristics of the pine forests near temples to identify the correlation between pine tree growth and location environment. We selected Chuneunsa, Wonhyosa, Jeungsimsa, and Taeansa Temples since these four areas still had the healthy pine forests. In all four studied area, the pine trees dominate the canopy layers while the deciduous broadleaf trees mostly inhabited appeared in the lower layers. The growth of pine trees in Jeungsimsa and Wonhyosa areas was not as good as Chuneunsa area where the pine trees tended to be older. We found higher total nitrogen content in soil in Jeungsimsa area than other areas, maybe because of increase in total nitrogen caused by the development of low vegetation in the area. This peculiarity may have led to the pine trees in the area to fall behind the deciduous broadleaf trees in competition for nitrogen nutrient and thus to show deteriorated growth. The altitude and the twig length showed a negative correlation as did the degree of slope and the mean importance percentage of the pine tree. In other words, the growth environment such as soil became poorer when the altitude and the degree of slope increased, and thus the growth amount and dominance of the pine trees were lower. The degree of slope showed a positive correlation with the twig length of the pine tree. Within boundaries of location environment where the pine tree forests were dominant, it seemed that growth of the pine trees was more favorable as the slope was steeper because the trees could avoid competition with deciduous broadleaf trees. On the other hand, the growth of pine trees deteriorated as the electrical conductivity of soil increased; increase in soil nutrients might have accelerated vegetation development of deciduous broadleaf trees and thus aggravated the growth environment of pine trees to negatively affect maintaining the health of the pine tree forests.

Abamectin offers great protection against Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, a well-known devastating pathogen of pine tree stands. Trunk injection of nematicides is currently the most preferred method of control. This study aimed to evaluate the potency of the commonly used formulations of abamectin against B. xylophilus. Twenty-one formulations of abamectin were evaluated by comparing their sublethal toxicities and reproduction inhibition potentials against B. xylophilus. Nematodes were treated with diluted formulation concentrations in multi-well culture plates. And, populations preexposed to pre-determined concentrations of the formulations were inoculated onto Botrytis cinerea culture, and in pine twig cuttings. Potency was contrastingly different among formulations, with LC95 of 0.00285 and 0.39462 mg/ml for the most, and the least potent formulation, respectively. Paralysis generally occurred at an application dose of 0.06 ㎍/ml or higher, and formulations with high sublethal toxicities caused significant paralysis levels at the tested doses, albeit the variations. Nematode reproduction was evident at lower doses of 0.00053-0.0006 ㎍/ml both on Botrytis cinerea and pine twigs, with significant variations among formulations. Thus, the study highlighted the inconsistencies in the potency of similar product formulations with the same active ingredient concentration against the target organism, and the need to analyze the potential antagonistic effects of the additives used in formulations.
The pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is a well-known devastating pathogen of economic importance in the Republic of Korea and other countries. In the Republic of Korea, trunk injection of nematicides is the preferred method of control. In this study, the efficacy of 16 locally produced formulations of emamectin benzoate against the PWN are compared through determining their sublethal toxicities and reproduction inhibition potentials. Nematodes were treated with varying concentrations of the tested chemicals in multi-well culture plates, and rates of paralysis and mortality were determined after 24 h. Reproduction inhibition potential was tested by inoculating pre-treated nematodes onto Botrytis cinerea, and in pine twig cuttings. Despite the uniformity in the concentration of the active ingredient, efficacy was contrastingly different among formulations. The formulations evidently conformed to three distinct groups based on similarities in sublethal activity (group 1: LC95 of 0.00768-0.01443 mg/ ml; group 2: LC95 of 0.03202-0.07236 mg/ml, and group 3: LC95 of as high as 0.30643-0.40811 mg/ml). Nematode paralysis generally occurred at the application dose of 0.0134-0.1075 ㎍/ml, and there were significant differences in nematode paralysis rates among the products. Nematode reproduction was only evident at lower doses both on B. cinerea and pine twigs, albeit the variations among formulations. Group 1 formulations significantly reduced nematode reproduction even at a lower dose of 0.001075 ㎍/ml. The variations in efficacy might be attributed to differences in inert ingredients. Therefore, there is need to analyze the potential antagonistic effects of the large number of additives used in formulations.
Dimension analysis was used to estimate biomass and net primary production(NPP) in a 36-year-old Japanese red pine (Pines densiflora S. et Z.) natural forest in Kangwondo. Best estimation was made by the equation model of $Wt=aD^bH^c$ where Wt is weight in kg, D is DBH in cm, and H is total tree height in m. Total aboveground biomass was estimated at 198.82 t/ha. Organic matter was distributed in the Japanese red pine stand as follows ; bolewood 68.8%, live branches 16.5%, bolebark 5.4%, foliage 4.6%, dead branches 3.7%, and cones 0.6%. Net primary production was estimated at 15.87 t/㏊/yr and was distributed: bolewood 44.5%, live branches 30.9%, foliage 14.1%, current twig 7.1%, and bolebark 3.3%. Leaf efficiency was estimated at 1.876. The power equation for biomass and IVPP yielded similar results as the results for Pines densiflora in Japan.
This study was performed to investigate the toxicity of 39 registered insecticides to the susceptibility, systemic effect, and residual effect and control effect against Pine sawyer beetle, Monochamus saltuarius. Eleven kinds of chemicals such as fenitrothion, fenthion, phenthoate, phosphamidon, dinotefuran, actamiprid, clothianidin, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam, esfenvalerate+fenitrothion, and fipronil were showed 100% insecticidal activity both in body spray and twig dipping bioassay. Among these chemicals, fenitrothion and fenthion were showed 100% insecticidal activity when sprayed at 4000 times diluted solutions, and phenthoate, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam and fipronil were showed 100% insecticidal activity when sprayed at 2000 times diluted solution. Root systemic effect was showed 100% mortality in phosphamidon, clothianidin, thiamethoxam, and 77.7% in thiacloprid. In residual effect, fenitrothion and thiamethoxam were showed 80% mortality fifteen days after treatment (DAT), and fenthion, phosphamidon, clothianidin were showed 80% mortality ten DAT, fenitrothion, thiamethoxam, fipronil showed 100% mortality in seven DAT, thiacloprid was showed 100% mortality in three DAT. Fenthion and phenthoate were showed 100% mortality one DAT. In the control effect, 6 kinds of chemicals were showed 100% mortality one DAT and all chemicals showed 100% mortality three DAT.
Susceptibility and persistence of Japanese pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus adults, and acute contact toxicity, foliage contact toxicity, and residual toxicity to honeybee, Apis mellifera were evaluated by using 5 kinds of neonicotinoid pesticides. All neonicotinoids pesticides showed over 80% mortality 48 hour after body spray treatment. However, only 2 kinds of acetamiprid ME and acetamiprid+buprofezin showed over 80% mortality in the twig dipping treatment. All of the five neonicotinoides pesticides used in M. alternatus adults showed residual effect of 60-80% mortality, but the efficacy decreased rapidly after 1 day of treatment. Acetamiprid ME showed the lowest toxicity in the acute and foliage contact toxicity test of A. mellifera. The residual toxicity of leaves on A. mellifera was very low in acetamiprid ME and acetamiprid+buprofezin. However, the residual toxicity of all pesticides treatments decreased to 10-30% after 1 day of treatment and further decreased with time. These results indicate that acetamiprid ME among five neonicotinoid agents showed a high insecticidal activity in the M. alternatus adults, while it exhibited relatively low contact and residual toxicity in the A. mellifera. It is thought that acetamiprid ME can be effectively used for the control of the M. alternatus adults as vector of pine wilt disease.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag as soil conditioner in a nursery and two natural forests. The BOF slag was applied at rates of 0, 4, 8, and 12 t/ha for seedbed nursery of three tree species-Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis and Amorpha fruticosa; and 0, 10, 20, and 40 t/ha for Pinus densiflora natural forests located at two sites. In case of the nursery study, the significant increase in soil pH and contents of Ca, Mg, $SiO_2$, Fe and Mn was noticed after six months of the BOF slag application. Dry weight of Pinus densiflora seedlings with BOF slag treatments was lower compared with that of control. There were no significant differences among treatments in dry weight of Larix leptolepis seedlings. Dry weight of Amorpha fruticosa seedlings, which are deciduous species and grow rapidly at seedling stage, increased significantly and T/R ratio decreased as BOF slag rate increased. The differences of effects of BOF slag application on the seedlings of tree species may be attributed to the differences of optimum pH range of the species. In Pinus densiflora natural forests, there were no significant differences in soil pH and contents of $SiO_2$, Fe and Mn among the treatments, but these values became higher as BOF slag rate increased. Contents of Ca in soil became significantly higher as BOF slag rate increased. There were no significant differences among treatments in net production of mature Pinus densiflora trees, but BOF slag rate of 10ton/ha showed the highest net production. Young Pinus densiflora trees at the plots of BOF slag rate of 10 t/ha showed significantly higher root collar diameter growth rate and twig net production than those of other treatments. It may be given as a conclusion that BOF slag application in nursery and forest soil increased soil pH and contents of Ca, $SiO_2$, Fe and Mn in soil and they showed the ability of BOF slag to be used as a soil conditioner in strongly acid soil.
