  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of extracts supplements of pine nut cone on the broiler performance and the cholesterol content, the lipid oxidation of serum and meat of broilers. The control group was fed a common basal diet without antibiotics and the treatment group were fed a common basal diet with extracts of pine nut cone of 500ppm(T1), illite 1% +extracts of pine nut cone of 500ppm(T2), pine nut cone powder of 2.5%(T3) for 5 weeks. The weight gain and the feed intake were significantly higher treatment than control. The cholesterol content of serum was significantly decreased in T1, T2 group. The breast was also significantly decreased in T1, T2 group. The thigh was not different among treatment, but the cholesterol content of serum was significantly lower in T1, T2 treatment than control. TBARS of the brest and the thigh showed significantly lower than control. POV of the brest and the thigh showed different among treatment, but there were no correlations among treatment.

A Comparative Study on the Relationship between Tree Form and Volume in Stands of Pinus koraiensis and Larix leptolepis (잣나무의 낙엽송림(落葉松林)에 있어서 수형(樹型)과 재적간(材積間)의 관계(關係) 비교(比較))

  • Noticed that large number of the Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.) has lost its typical excurrent tree from by removal of apical shoot in the process of cone harvesting, the investigation and analysis for the species were made on the basis of the relationship among DBH, total height, merchantable height, and merchantable volume, compared with normally grown Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis Gordon). One hundred sample trees for each species were selected in the same aged stands for the study. Results have indicated that the pine has shown abnormal height growth pattern mainly by the disturbance of external artificial force. The pine's forked and/or crooked stems by the reason lave led the result of less merchantable volume in the same DBH classes. Consequently, the pine would have undesirable tree form in terms of timber production, unless free from apical shoot disturbances. Considered to the merit of the Korean white pine that can produce timber and pine nuts, management alternatives for the pine stand were suggested to achieve maximum rate of return for the silvicultural investment.

Improvement of Milk Fatty Acid Composition for Production of Functional Milk by Dietary Phytoncide Oil Extracted from Discarded Pine Nut Cones (Pinus koraiensis) in Holstein Dairy Cows

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of adding phytoncide oil extracted from Korean pine nut cone by-product to the diet of dairy cows on milk yield and compositions, fatty acid characteristics, complete blood count and stress response. A total of 74 Holstein cows were used for 30 days and divided into two groups. Each group was given a basal diet (C) or an experimental diet containing phytoncide additives at 0.016% (T) in feed. The results showed that phytoncide feeding had no effect on milk yield. In addition, there were no observed effects on milk composition, but the ratio of fatty acid in milk was significantly affected by the phytoncide diet, and it showed a positive effect. Not only were the major functional fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid increased, but also ${\omega}6:{\omega}3$ fatty acid ratio was reduced in milk of T group (p<0.05). In blood analysis, the complete blood count showed no significant difference between C and T group on all parameters. However, the cortisol concentration was significantly decreased in T group compared to control (p<0.05). Taken together, we suggest that phytoncide oil does not have a great influence on the physiological changes, but can be a potential feed additive that improves the milk fatty acid and stress resilience in dairy cows. In addition, it will contribute to the development of feed resource, a reduction in feed cost and a lessening of environmental pollution.
