The removal and readsorption effects of pine and oak bark grown in Korea on water pollution caused by heavy metal ions have been investigated. Bark saturated with heavy metal ions is refleshed with 0.1 N ammonium acetate and then its readsorption has been done. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Adsorption effect of pine bark is similiar to that of oak bark, and 20-40 meshed bark gives the best results. 2. 0.1 N amonium acetate of pH 7 shows more elutriative than the others such as pH 3 hydrochloric acid, pH 10 ammonium hydroxide and pH 7 water. 3 Pine bark refleshed with 0.1 N ammonium acetate gets two times as effective in adsorption as raw bark, and shows more effective than oak bark.
Four year old American ginseng plants (Panax quinquefolium L.) were grown in control and treated field plots in North Carolina, USA. Soil pH (4.4, 5.5, and 6.5), soil phosphate (19, 89 and 232 ppm) and mulch treatments (wheat straw, pine needle straw, poplar bark, oak bark, pine bark and hardwood leaves) were studied for their effects on total dry weight, total ginsenosides and 5 individual ginsenosides (A1, Rg1, Rd, Re, and Rb2). The leaf and root tissue were analyzed for ginsenosides by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The oak and poplar bark mulch treatments appeared to have the best effect upon the growth and production of roots while not significantly decreasing the ginsenoside content of the roots. The oak mulch showed a statistical increase in the ginsenoside content of the leaves.
To improve the adsorption of heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions. sawdust and bark of pine (Pinus densiflora) and oak(Quercus accutisima) were phosphorylated. The phosphorylated sawdust and bark contained phosphorous of 1.2~1.3% in the treatment for 1 hr and 1.4~1.7% for 2 hrs regardless of species and tree segments. The sawdust indicated considerable increase in the adsorption ratio of $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$ and $Cd^{2+}$, however the adsorption of $Pb^{2+}$ was a little increased. The pine sawdust was more effective in the adsorption of heavy metal ions than that of oak. While the bark indicated little adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions.

The occurrence of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) advance growth has been noticed in the deciduous oak forest being adjacent to the mature Korean pine plantation. the korean pine seedlings in the forest were regenerated naturally from harvested and transported Korean pine seeds and cones by rodents, mainly red squirrels. Mongolian oak (Quercus bariabilis), which formed dominant overstory, had close-to-normal distributions of height, diameter and age classes. Korean pine, which dominated the understory, had the reverse J-shaped height, diameter and age distributions that are expected of a shade tolerant species. Growing in the summer shade of the oak, Korean pine seedling had slow, but steady height growth during the past four decades. Total biomass of Korean pine seedling ranged from $2,835-8,541kg\;ha^{-1}$ and biomass allocation of Korean pine seedling was follows : stem (with bark) > foliage > branches > roots. Korean pine seedlings allocated more biomass to foliage and branches compare to planted Korean pine. The smaller root/shoot ratio of Korean pine seedling in the site is to believed to be result of competition for light. Contents of N and K for Korean pine seedling were greatest in foliage follow by branches, stem ad roots, while content of P was greater in the order of foliage > roots > stem > branches.
In order to find an environment-friendly method to suppress astragal stem rot caused by the isolates of Rhizoctonia solani AG 1 and AG 4, we tested an antagonistic fungus Gliocladium virens G1 was evaluated as a biocontrol agent and estimated inorganic compounds and organic materials were tested for their effect of the disease suppression. G. virens G1 effectively inhibited mycelial growth in a dual culture and caused mycelial lysis in the culture filtrate. No adverse effect was observed when examined for seed germination and seedling growth. Promoted seedling growth was observed with the seed treatment. Seeds of astragal plant were germinated higher in the sterile soil than the natural soil. Of 14 inorganics tested, alum, aluminum sulfate and calcium oxide significantly suppressed the mycelial growth and sclerotial germination. Milled pine bark and oak sawdust also suppressed the mycelial growth. Soil amended with 1% of G. virens G1 composted with pine bark (w/v) significantly controlled astragal stem rot in the glasshouse experiments.
The pretreatment of bark powder with sodium hydroxide and formalin showed the most excellent adsorption ratio, but this method could not practically be used because of the occurrence of dark-colored pigments in filtrates during pretreatment. Instead, acid and formalin were the most affirmative and effective among the pretreatment methods tested, and could be used for this purpose. Among tested species, Quercus acutissima and Robinia pseudo-accacia showed the largest amount of metal adsorption, and $Pb^{2+}$ was the best(83 to 96%) among the four heavy metals tested. The order of adsorption ratios other metals was as follows; $Cu^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$, and the ratio was approximately 45 to 55%. In addition, as the substrate amount increased, the amount of adsorbed heavy metals in subtrates gradually increased, but the adsorbed amount was not proportional to the substrate amount. The order of heavy metal adsorption was as follows; $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$. Depending on flow rate and column size, pine bark power adsorbed more heavy metals in the 5ml/min flow rate and 3.5cm column size rather than the 10ml/min and 2.0cm. However, oak bark power showed contrary results compared with pine bark powder. The adsorption of $Pb^{2+}$ occurred rapidly in the incipient stagte. Even though bark powders were repeatedly used three times, there was no change in the adsorption ratio(45%), but after four times, the adsorption ratio was significantly reduced to 35%.
To remove $Zn^{2+}$(422 ppm) and $Mn^{2+}$(53.1 ppm) from Sambo mine runoff(the total amount of heavy metals : 107 ppm) in Whasung, packed bed column tests were run in two stages plastic columns. The non-treated bark(Pinus densiflora, Quercus accutisima) of each 6 kg were placed into columns. The height and diameter of column were 60 cm and 45 cm, respectively. Flow rate ranged to 1 ${\ell}$/min for 15 days. The concentration of heavy metal ions in filtrate was determinded periodically. By the treatment of oak bark the initial concentration of $Zn^{2+}$ was maintained under 10 ppm(the adsorption rate: 64%) for 24 hr, while pine bark kept the initial concentration of $Zn^{2+}$ under 20 ppm(the adsorption rate: 53%) for 15 hr. However the initial concentration of $Mn^{2+}$ was reduced only to 10.6~18.6 ppm (the adsorption rate: 20~35%) until 10 hr. Thereafter, the adsorption of $Mn^{2+}$ by bark decreased rapidly. There was little difference in the adsorption ratio of $Mn^{2+}$ between oak and pine bark. The use of bark to remove $Zn^{2+}$ in Samba mine runoff was effective, but it wasn't proper to remove $Mn^{2+}$.
In this study, pitch pine (Pinus rigida, PIR) and Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica, QUM) pellets were fabricated with bark or/and drying waste liquor (DWL) of larch (Larix kaempferi, LAK) as an additive. Based on the results of fuel characteristics of the pellets, optimal conditions for producing the high-quality pellets were provided. In the analysis of chemical composition, bark contained holocelluose and lignin of 90% and over. DWL had 0.1% solid assumed to sugars which are generated from the oven-drying of LAK logs. QUM showed high ash content (2.2%) by containing of bark in the sawdust. Bark and DWL of LAK had high ash content of 4% and over. Calorific values of all specimens and additives were higher than that of the $1^{st}$-grade standard of wood pellets designated by NIFOS (18.0 MJ/kg). PIR and QUM pellets were fabricated with additive of 2 wt% based on the solid weight of oven-dried sawdust using a piston-type flat-die pelletizer, and thus ash content and calorific value of the pellets did not affect by the use of additive. Durability of the pellets increased with the use of additive. Durabilties of pellets, which were fabricated with bark as an additive and DWL as a controller of moisture content for sawdust, did not differ from those of pellets without additives and were lower than those of pellets either with bark or DWL. However, use of both bark and DWL for the production of wood pellets might be favorable because it can make a profit from the collection process of DWL. Based on the results of fuel characteristics of the pellets, QUM and PIR pellets were produced by a flat-die pelletizer. Moisture content (MC), bulk density and durability of the pellets improved with the use of additive. Particularly, sawdust MC of 10% and the addition of bark or DWL for PIR as well as sawdust MC of 12% and the addition of bark for QUM might be optimal conditions for the production of high-quality pellets. Except for the ash content of QUM pellets, other properties of PIR and QUM pellets exceeded the $1^{st}$-grade wood pellets standards of NIFOS.
This study is to analyze the characteristics of typical Korean wood ashes from twelve trees, oak tree needles and pine bark, which are common in the area, and to suggest their applications in ash glaze making. The chemical analysis of the ashes shows that the main component of wood ash is CaO while wood bark ash consists of $SiO_2$, and leaf ash consists of CaO and $SiO_2$. The results of the study are as follows: Ashes made from the wood of Acasia, Popular and Jujube contained relatively high amounts of Fe$_2$$O_3$ and MgO compared to other tree ashes. The ashes had yellowish green color glaze. From the result of W analysis they presented the highest chroma. Therefore these ashes are good for making transparent glaze. From the result of W analysis Grapevine, pear and oak wood ashes containing the highest amounts of Fe$_2$$O_3$, MgO, P$_2$O$\_$5/ and MnO presented yellowish green color glaze compared to other ashes are suitable for making opaque glazes because of their showing stable and opacity phenomena. Pine tree, Platanus and Zelkova wood ashes consist of high amounts of CaO and P$_2$O$\_$5/ compared to other tree ashes. So they showed the most vivid and bluish green color glaze among 12 ashes. Therefore, they would make a good celadon glaze. Birch, oak and chestnut tree ashes have high content or MnO which affects on glaze color with small amount. These ashes presented yellowish green color not as much strong as Acacia ash, Poplar ash, Jujube tree ash. These are good for Irabo glaze.
This study was designed to investigate the adsorption of heavy metal ions by untreated bark according to the treatment conditions of aqueous solution. The effect of temperature and pH of aqueous solution, particle size of bark, addition of light metal ions on the adsorption was examined, and the competition in adsorption among heavy metal ions was also evaluated. te The adsorption ratio of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ increased with increasing themperature of solution from $-5^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$ however, it was relatively constant at temperatures between $10^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$. The adsorption ratio of $Cr^{6+}$ increased continuously with increasing the temperature of solution. The maximum adsorption ratio of $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Pb^{2+}$ was noted at pHs ranged 6 to 7; however, the adsorption ratio declined sharply on either sides of the optimum. The adsorption ratio of $Cr^{6+}$ decreased continuously with increasing the pH of solution. The adsorption ratio increased as decreasing the particle size of bark, and there was little differences in adsorption tendency between pine and oak bark. By the addition of $Ca^{2+}$ or $Mg^{2+}$(10~25 ppm), the adsorption ratio of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ increased. An increase of the adsorption ratio was higher in oak bark than in pine bark. However, the adsorption ratio of $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cr^{6+}$ was not affected by the addition of light metal ions. As the mixed solution of 2 or 3 kinds of heavy metal ions($Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$) was treated with the untreated bark, the adsorption of $Zn^{2+}$ decreased considerably because of the competitive adsorption among heavy metal ions. Also the adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ was more and less reduced. However the adsorption of $Pb^{2+}$ was not affected by the presence of other heavy metal ions.
