Recently, the use of barrette pile is remarkably increased specially for high-rise building and bridge foundations. However, on the contrary, very few studies have been made for analyzing barrette pile behavior considering interface behavior between pile and soils around. Therefore, in this paper, these effects are evaluated by using the 3-dimensional non-linear finite element method with the results of full-scale pile load test from the fields. In addition to that, the selection of proper stiffness modulus on the pile interface is discussed.
Inclined piles are commonly used in civil engineering constructions where significant lateral resistance is required. Many researchers proved their positive performance on the seismic behavior of the supported structure and the piles themselves. However, most of these numerical studies were done within the framework of linear elastic or elastoplastic soil behavior, neglecting therefore the soil non-linearity at low and moderate soil strains which is questionable and could be misleading in dynamic analysis. The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of the pile inclination on the seismic performance of the soil-pile-structure system when both the linear elastic and the nonlinear soil models are employed. Based on the comparative responses, the adequacy of the soil's linear elastic behavior will be therefore evaluated. The analysis is conducted by generating a three-dimensional finite difference model, where a full interaction between the soil, structure, and inclined piles is considered. The numerical survey proved that the pile inclination can have a significant impact on the internal forces generated by seismic activity, specifically on the bending moment and shear forces. The main disadvantages of using inclined piles in this system are the bending forces at the head and pile-to-head connection. It is crucial to account for soil nonlinearity to accurately assess the seismic response of the soil-pile-structure system.

One solution to prevent deterioration due to expansion joint and to extend lifetime of short span bridges, is jointless integral abutment bridge. To understand behavior of pile foundation of skewed plate girder bridge with integral abutment, finite element analysis was performed for the model of different skew angle from 90。 to 50。. Comparison of stresses at pile and abutment was made for each case. It is found that effect of temperature change is major factor to influence the behavior of skewed integral abutment bridge.
In this study, a complex behavior connector is proposed to overcome the problems that may occur when small pile pipe and micro pile is used as a friction pile concept in the lower foundation of an oil sand plant where a piloti foundation is used. The individual settlement and heaving of piles were connected in one group to allow the composite behavior. This study performed to analyze the load carrying capacity to identify a complex behavior. In addition, the shape of the composite behavior connector was examined to apply the advantages of pile-group and piled raft foundations to oil sand plants. A scale model was constructed to measure the behavior of the load. The stability and weakness of the device were selected to determine the shape of the connector using the scale model testing.

The compressive capacity and the soil plugging resistance of single open-ended pipe pile were completely decreased in the previous study on the behavior of shorter single pile during simulated seaquake induced by the vertical component of earthquake. But the capacity of single open-ended pipe pile with greater penetration and the capacity of piles group with shorter penetration were expected to be stable after seaquake motion. In this study, first, 2-piles or 4-piles are driven into the calibration chamber included in saturated fine medium sand with several simulated penetrations, and the compressive load test for each piles group was performed. Then, about 95 % compressive load of the ultimate capacity was applied on the pile head during the simulated seaquake motion. Finally, In confirm the reduction of pile capacity during the simulated seaquake motion, the compressive load test for each single pile or piles group after seaquake motion was performed. During the simulated seaquake, the compressive capacity of open-ended pipe piles with greater penetration ( 〉about 27 m) was not degraded even in deep sea deeper than 220 m and soil plug within open-ended pipe pile installed in deep sea was stable after seaquake motion. Also, in the case of 2-piles or 4-pile groups, the compressive capacity after seaquake motion was not degraded at all regardless of pile penetration depth beneath seabed, sea water depth and seaquake frequency.

It is essential to measure load transfer mechanism of pile to check the appropriateness of assumptions made for design purpose and to continuously monitor the behavior of pile foundation. Through many attempts to monitor the behavior of super-structure in civil engineering area using several optical fiber sensors have been made, application of optical fiber sensor technology on pile foundation has not been tried up to now. Load transfer of model piles during compression loading was measured by optical fiber sensors and compared with the measurement by strain gauges. Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensor system was used since it has many advantages, such as easy multiplexing, high sensitivity, and simple fabrication. Besides the model pile tests, uniaxial tension test of steel bar and compression tests of mortar specimen were carried out to evaluate the performance of FBG sensors in embedded environments. The shift of refilming wavelength due to the strain in FBG sensor is converted to the strain at sensor location and the dependence between them is 1.28 pm/${\mu}$ strain. FBG sensors embedded in model pile showed a better survivability than strain gauges. Measured results of load transfer by both FBG sensors and strain gauges were similar, but FBG sensors showed a smoother trend than those by strain gauge. Based on the results of model pile test, it was concluded that the use of FBG sensor for strain measurement in pile has a great potential for the analysis of pile load transfer.
Preventing or reducing the damage impact of lateral soil movements on piled foundations is highly dependent on understanding the behavior of passive piles. For this reason, a detailed experimental study is carried out, aimed to examine the influence of soil density, the depth of moving layer and pile spacing on the behavior of a 2×2 free-standing pile group subjected to a uniform profile of lateral soil movement. Results from 8 model tests comprise bending moment, shear force, soil reaction and deformations measured along the pile shaft using strain gauges and others probing tools were performed. It is found that soil density and the depth of moving layer have an opposite impact regarding the ultimate response of piles. A pile group embedded in dense sand requires less soil displacement to reach the ultimate soil reaction compared to those embedded in medium and loose sands. On the other hand, the larger the moving depth, the larger amount of lateral soil movement needs to develop the pile group its ultimate deformations. Furthermore, the group factor and the effect of pile spacing were highly related to the soil-structure interaction resulted from the transferring process of forces between pile rows with the existing of the rigid pile cap.

In this thesis the model tests were performed to the horizontal pull-out characteristics of a suction pile subjected to a pull in sands. For this model tests, soil conditions ($D_r$=65), three pile diameters (D=100, 150, 200mm) and five loading points (h/L=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) were changed. And the experimental results were also compared with those by the theoretical methods. The results by the experimental and theoretical analysis are as follows. The ultimate horizontal pull-out resistance by the model test increased as the loading point (h/L) moved downwards from the pile top, and the maximum value reached at the h/L=0.75. The theoretical ultimate horizontal pull-out resistance by Broms(1964) and Hong(1984) agreed well with that by the model test at h/L=0 and 0.25, but their results overestimated the experimental result at lower part of pile and the differences between the theoretical and experimental results were of great. While the horizontal loading applied at the upper part of pile, the pile moved to the horizontal direction with rotating clockwise. As the loading point moved downwards from the pile top, the rotating angle of pile was smaller.

This paper discusses the lateral behavior of single and group piles in homogeneous and non-homogeneous(two layered) soil. In the single pile, the model tests were conducted to investigate the effects on ratio of lower layer height to embedded pile length, ratio of soil modules of upper layer to lower layer, boundary rendition of pile head and tip, embedded pile length, pile construction condition, ground condition with saturate and moisture state in Nak-Dong river sand. Also, in the group pile, the model tests were to investigate the effects on spacing-to-diameter ratio of pile, pile array, ratio of pile spacing, boundary condition of pile head and tip, eccentric load and ground condition. The maximum bending moment and deflection induced in active piles were found to be highly dependent on the relative density, pile construction condition, boundary condition of pile head and tip. Based on the results obtained, it was found that the decrease of lateral bearing capacity in saturated sand was in the range of 31% - 53% as compared with the case of dry sand. Also, in the group pile, a spacing-to-diameter of 6.0 seems to be large enough to eliminate the group effect for the case of relative density of 61.8%, and 32.8%, and then each pile in such a case behaves essentially the same as a single pile. In this study, the program is developed by using the modified Chang method which used p - y method and the exact solution of governing equation of pile and it can be used to calculate the deflection, bending moment and soil reaction with FDM in non-homogeneous soil. In comparing the modified Chang method with field test results, the predict results shows better agreement with measured results in field tests.

In this study, a new design method of pile bent structure considering plastic hinge was proposed on the basis of the beam-column model. Based on the analysis results, it is found that the positioning of plastic hinge on the pile bent structure was influenced by nonlinear behavior of material and p-$\Delta$ effect. Moreover, concrete cracking began to occur at the joint section between the pile and column in case of pile bent structure with different cross-sections. The plastic hinge can be developed on the pile bent structure when large displacement was occurred, and pile bent structures can be maintained well only if it is developed on the column part. Therefore, in this study, the optimized cross-section ratio between column and pile was analyzed to induce the plastic hinge at the joint section between the pile and column. Based on this, the optimized diameter ratio of pile and column can be obtained below the inflection point of the bi-linear curve depending on the relations between column-pile diameter ratio($D_c/D_p$) and normalized lateral cracking load ratio($F/F_{Dc=Dp}$). And through this study, it is founded that in-depth limit($L_{As}$=0.4%) normalized by the pile length($L_P$) are proportionally decreased as the pile length($L_P/D_P$) increases up to $L_P/D_P$=17.5, and beyond that in-depth limit converges to a constant value. Finally, it is found that the proposed limit depth by taking into account the minimum concrete-steel ratio would be more economical design of the pile bent structure.
