In this study, we tried to obtain the optimal conditions to reduce odors generated from pig wastewater using magnesia (MgO) through in-situ test after producing a reactor for removing odors. For this purpose, the filling amount of magnesia, the injection amount of pig wastewater, the aeration method, the aeration amount and the aeration time were considered. The field experiment was conducted at Cheongwoon Livestock Farm, which has a pig wastewater reservoir. As the amount of magnesia added to the weight of wastewater (500 kg) increases, the amount of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) generated tended to gradually decrease. As a result of the test, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in the pig wastewater decreased up to 65% and 77%, respectively, for 2 days aeration after 0.8% of magnesia was added to the reaction tank. The initial pH of the pig wastewater in the reactor was 8.2, and the pH was found to be 9.2 when magnesia was added up to 0.8%. In the light of this trend, it can be known that magnesia gradually increases the pH in the pig wastewater and makes it weakly alkaline. As the pH increases, part of the ammonia gas present in the pig wastewater vaporizes into the air and the remaining part is removed by precipitation after chemical bonding with dissolved magnesium ions and phosphate ions. In order to remove the odor of pig wastewater and turn it into compost, most of the existing livestock farms go through a six-month aeration process using microorganisms. In contrast, the current study proved the effect of removing odors from pig wastewater within 2 days through chemical reactions that do not affect microbial activity.
Livestock wastewater is being discharged without treatment from Hasen's pig farm cluster in WangGoong (WG) area into the Iksan Stream, eventually flowing into the ManGyung (MG) at the upstream junction. Although it is well known that before discharge, wastewater must satisfy the pig slurry discharge standards; because of ongoing remodeling, proper treatment is not being performed. According to public records, wastewater from the WG pig farm cluster is responsible for 3.6% of MG River pollution and 2.0% of the SaeManGuem (SMG) Reservoir pollution. As a result, upstream water treatment quality has become primary concern for development of the SMG project. All physicochemical constituents and pathogenic microbes, such as chemical oxygen demand ($COD_{Cr}$), biochemical oxygen demand ($BOD_5$), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and Salmonella at the effluent of WG Plant (S-1) exceed the effluent standards. This is mainly due to insufficient wastewater treatment: the WG Plant is under renovation to increase water purification efficiency. By comparing the water quality at the S-7 junction, where the the Iksan Stream (pig farms) and the Wanggoong Stream (no pig farms) merge, it is clear that farming facilities and improper treatment can critically affect surrounding water quality. While it is clear throughout this study that the level of all physicochemical parameters and pathogenic microbes along the Stream decreased due to sedimentation, biodegradation and/or dilution. An alarming problem was discovered: the existence of pathogenic microbe count(E coli, Salmonella) in the lagoon wastewater and the stream water. Not only were high concentrations of these pathogens themselves found, but the potential existence of more serious pathogens could rise to more dangerous conditions.
Excess nitrogen (N) flowing from livestock manure to water systems poses a serious threat to the natural environment. Thus, livestock wastewater management has recently drawn attention to this related field. This study first attempted to obtain the optimal conditions for the further volatilization of NH3 gas generated from pig wastewater by adjusting the amount of injected magnesia (MgO). At 0.8 wt.% of MgO (by pig wastewater weight), the volatility rate of NH3 increased to 75.5% after a day of aeration compared to untreated samples (pig wastewater itself). This phenomenon was attributed to increases in the pH of pig wastewater as MgO dissolved in it, increasing the volatilization efficiency of NH3. The initial pH of pig wastewater was 8.4, and the pH was 9.2 when MgO was added up to 0.8 wt.%. Second, the residual ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) in pig wastewater was removed by precipitation in the form of struvite (NH4MgPO4·6H2O) by adjusting the pH after adding MgO and H3PO4. Struvite produced in the pig wastewater was identified by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. White precipitates began to form at pH 6, and the higher the pH, the lower the concentration of NH4+-N in pig wastewater. Of the total 86.1% of NH4+-N removed, 62.4% was achieved at pH 6, which was the highest removal rate. Furthermore, how struvite changes with pH was investigated. Under conditions of pH 11 or higher, the synthesized struvite was completely decomposed. The yield of struvite in the precipitate was determined to be between 68% and 84% through a variety of analyses.

Since autoheated thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) process has various advantages for the treatment of high-strength organic wastewater, active research and field application has been applied in U.S.A. and Canada, recently and the interest in ATAD process has been elevated for treating high-strength organic wastewater efficiently in Korea. Therefore, various experiments were carried out to evaluate the feasibility of ATAD process for the treatment of pig manure wastewater. The results of this study showed possibility to reuse pig manure wastewater as wet fodder or liquid compost, since ATAD process led excellent stabilization on the basis of odor and putrefaction. However. digested sludge can not be provided as wet fodder to most of hog farms without changing dry feeder system into wet system and as liquid compost to hog farms not having their own grass land. Since the results showed that the increase of temperature in reactor was resulted not from energy by biological activity. but from mechanical mixing energy. the reactor investigated in this study was against the principle of ATAD process. Therefore. if pig manure wastewater treated by ATAD can not be utilized as wet fodder. it is not economical to adopt ATAD process only for the treatment of wastewater.
The study objective was to evaluate the enhanced removal of high concentrations of phosphorus from synthetic wastewater (solely phosphorus-containing) and real wastewater (pig manure) by using carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated steel slag. Generally, phosphorus removal by steel slag is attributed to Ca2+ eluted from the slag. However, in this study, CNT was used to control the excess release of Ca2+ from steel slag and increase the phosphorus removal. The phosphorus removal rate by the uncoated steel slag was lower than that of the CNT-coated steel slag, even though the Ca2+ concentrations were higher in the solution containing the uncoated steel slag. Therefore, the phosphorus removal could be attributed to both precipitation with Ca2+ eluted from steel slag in aqueous solution and adsorption onto the surface of the CNT-coated steel slag. Furthermore, the protons released from the CNT surface by exchanging with divalent cations acted to reduce the pH increase of the solution, which is attributed to the OH- eluted from the steel slag. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics of the CNT-coated steel slags followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of the uncoated and CNT-coated steel slags was 6.127 and 9.268 mg P g-1 slag, respectively. In addition, phosphorus from pig manure was more effectively removed by the CNT-coated steel slag than by the uncoated slag. Over 24 hours, the PO4-P removal in pig manure was 12.3% higher by the CNT-coated slag. This CNT-coated steel slag can be used to remove both phosphorus and metals and has potential applications in high phosphorus-containing wastewater like pig manure.
The Purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the Change in the operating conditions on rotary turning compost plants. The major parameters investigated were moisture content and mixing of the sawdust and pig farm wastewater. Pig farm scale composting plants with mixing rotary were used in this study. Wastes used for the study were sawdust, pig manure, urine and wastewater. When the moisture content was 75%, the compost product obtained from the plants had better physical characteristics than that obtained from the plants with moisture contents of 70%, 80% and 85%.(two a day mixing). When the turning was twice a day, the compost product obtained from the plants had better characteristics than that obtained from non-mixing.(moisture content 75%). C/N ratio, pH value and coliform bacterial population were stable in the compost.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of temperature on operating parameters for reactor in pig wastewater treatment using sequencing batch reactor method which is one of the biological treatment methods. Study was accomplished by experimental apparatus of bench scale, and the degradation rate coefficient and temperature correction factor were derived. The followings are the conclusions that were derived from this study. 1. In the characteristics of pig wastewater, concentrations of TKN and T-P were very high as 590 mg/l and 40 mg/l, respectively. 2. Removal efficiency of BOD and $COD_{Mn}$ as organic compound indicators were the highest mark as 97% at 25$\circ$C. 3. When temperature was incresed from 10$\circ$C to 25$\circ$C, removal efficiencies of TKN and T-P were proportionally increased. Especially, the former was greatly effected by temperature of reactor. 4. In experiment of bench scale, the degradation rate coefficients were increased as temperature increased, but decreased at the temperature range of 25~35$\circ$C. Temperature adjustment coefficients for $COD_{Mn}$, BOD, TKN and T-P were 1.1460, 1.1356, 1.1140 and 1.0565, respectively.
This study was carried out to improve septic tank for piggery wastewater treatment of small pig farm. Septic tank were consisted of screen tank, aeration tank with two steps, settling tank, and filtering tank. Aeration tanks were filled with ALC of ø4~5cm. All operation steps were performed by timer from influent to effluent. Septic tank decreased BOD by 94.7% from 4,298.3mg/$\ell$ to 226.3mg/$\ell$ and also decreased SS by 92.4%, from 2,231.3mg/$\ell$ to 161.0mg/$\ell$, respectively.
Deposits discharged through the cleaning mainly were cement mortar, bitumen paintings and rust pieces, and fragments of perforation, stones and gravels. Deposits were more removed through swabbing pig cleaning rather than air scouring cleaning on the whole. However, air scouring cleaning were not influenced by the constraint conditions such as a change in the diameter or the presence of the valve in water mains compare to swabbing pig cleaning. So, it was thought that air scouring cleaning might be more favorable to water distribution network cleaning in the future. After the cleaning, water quality including residual chlorine and turbidity also was improved because of the removal of a significant amount of the deposits. Therefore, if the cleaning is continuously and regularly implemented in water mains, it is expected that it will help to recover the reliability and to preserve the health of water quality.
