The present work deals with second order statistics of post buckling response of piezoelectric laminated composite cylindrical shell panel subjected to hygro-thermo-electro-mechanical loading with random system properties. System parameters such as the material properties, thermal expansion coefficients and lamina plate thickness are assumed to be independent of the temperature and electric field and modeled as random variables. The piezoelectric material is used in the forms of layers surface bonded on the layers of laminated composite shell panel. The mathematical formulation is based on higher order shear deformation shell theory (HSDT) with von-Karman nonlinear kinematics. A efficient $C^0$ nonlinear finite element method based on direct iterative procedure in conjunction with a first order perturbation approach (FOPT) is developed for the implementation of the proposed problems in random environment and is employed to evaluate the second order statistics (mean and variance) of the post buckling load of piezoelectric laminated cylindrical shell panel. Typical numerical results are presented to examine the effect of various environmental conditions, amplitude ratios, electrical voltages, panel side to thickness ratios, aspect ratios, boundary conditions, curvature to side ratios, lamination schemes and types of loadings with random system properties. It is observed that the piezoelectric effect has a significant influence on the stochastic post buckling response of composite shell panel under various loading conditions and some new results are presented to demonstrate the applications of present work. The results obtained using the present solution approach is validated with those results available in the literature and also with independent Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS).
In this paper, the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) are employed to investigate the free vibration and bending analyses of a three-layered micro-shell sandwiched by piezoelectric layers subjected to an applied voltage and reinforced graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) under external and internal pressure. The micro-shell is resting on an elastic foundation modeled as Pasternak model. The mixture's rule and Halpin-Tsai model are utilized to compute the effective mechanical properties. By applying Hamilton's principle, the motion equations and associated boundary conditions are derived. Static/ dynamic results are obtained using Navier's method. The results are validated with the previously published works. The numerical results are presented to study and discuss the influences of various parameters on the natural frequencies and deflection of the micro-shell, such as applied voltage, thickness of the piezoelectric layer to radius, length to radius ratio, volume fraction and various distribution pattern of the GPLs, thickness-to-length scale parameter, and foundation coefficients for the both external and internal pressure. The main novelty of this work is simultaneous effect of graphene nanoplatelets as reinforcement and piezoelectric layers on the bending and vibration characteristics of the sandwich micro shell.
New active "intelligent" structural systems with integrated self-sensing, diagnosis, and control capabilities can lead to a new design dimension for the next generation high-performance structures and mechanical systems. However, temperature effects to the piezoelectric transducers are not fully understood. This paper is concerned with a mathematical modeling and analysis of a laminated piezothermoelastic cylindrical shell composite exposed to mechanical, electric, and thermal fields. Generic shell equations and solution procedures are derived. Contributions of spatial and time components in the mechanical, electric, and temperature excitations are discussed, and their analytical solutions derived. A laminated cylindrical shell composite with fully distributed piezoelectric layers is used in a case study; its multi-field step and impulse responses are investigated. Analyses suggest that the fully distributed actuators are insensitive to even modes due to load averaging and cancellation. Accordingly, these even modes are filtered from the total response and only the modes that are combinations of m = 1, 3, 5, ${\cdots}$ and n = 1, 3, 5, ${\cdots}$ participating in dynamic response of the shell.
The present paper develops piezo-thermo-elastic analysis of a thick spherical shell for generalized functionally graded piezoelectric material. The assumed structure is loaded under thermal, electrical and mechanical loads. The mechanical, thermal and electrical properties are graded along the radial direction based on a power function with three different non homogenous indexes. Primarily, the non homogenous heat transfer equation is solved by applying the general boundary conditions, individually. Substitution of stress, strain, electrical displacement and material properties in equilibrium and Maxwell equations present two non homogenous differential equation of order two. The main objective of the present study is to improve the relations between mechanical and electrical loads in hollow spherical shells especially for functionally graded piezoelectric materials. The obtained results can evaluate the effect of every non homogenous parameter on the mechanical and electrical components.
Piezoelectric composite laminates are a powerful material system that offers vast options to improve structural behavior. Successful design of piezoelectric adaptive structures and testing of control laws call for highly accurate, reliable and numerically efficient numerical tools. This paper puts focus onto linear and geometrically nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of smart structures made of such a material system. For this purpose, highly efficient linear 3-node and 4-node finite shell elements are proposed. Both elements employ the Mindlin-Reissner kinematics. The shear locking effect is treated by the discrete shear gap (DSG) technique with the 3-node element and by the assumed natural strain (ANS) approach with the 4-node element. Geometrically nonlinear effects are considered using the co-rotational approach. Static and dynamic examples involving actuator and sensor function of piezoelectric layers are considered.
A state-space method is developed to investigate the time-dependent behaviors of an angle-ply cylindrical shell in cylindrical bending with surface-bonded piezoelectric layers. Both the interfacial diffusion and sliding are considered to describe the properties of the imperfect interfaces. Particularly, a matrix reduction technique is adopted to establish the transfer relations between the elastic and piezoelectric layers of the laminated shell. Very different from our previous paper, in which an approximate numerical technique, i.e. power series expansion method, is used to deal with the time-dependent problems, the exact solutions are derived in the present analysis based on the piezoelasticity equations without any assumptions. Numerical results are finally obtained and the effects of imperfect interfaces on the electro-mechanical responses of the laminated shell are discussed.
Active control of nonlinear vibration of stiffened functionally graded (SFG) cylindrical shell is studied in this paper. The system is subjected to axial and transverse periodic loads in the presence of thermal uncertainty. The material composition is considered to be continuously graded in the thickness direction, also these properties depend on temperature. The relations of strain-displacement are derived based on the classical shell theory and the von Kármán equations. For modeling the stiffeners on the cylindrical shell surface, the smeared stiffener technique is used. The Galerkin method is used to discretize the partial differential equations of motion. Some comparisons are made to validate the SFG model. For suppression of the nonlinear vibration, the linear and nonlinear control strategies are applied. For control objectives, the piezoelectric actuator is attached to the external surface of the shell and the thin ring piezoelectric sensor is attached to the middle internal surface of shell. The effect of PID, feedback linearization and sliding mode control on the suppression of vibration for SFG cylindrical shell is presented.
In this research, the dynamic stability and nonlinear vibration behavior of a smart rotating sandwich cylindrical shell is studied. The core of the structure is a functionally graded material (FGM) which is integrated by functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) layers subjected to electric field. The piezoelectric layers at the inner and outer surfaces used as actuator and sensor, respectively. By applying the energy method and Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of sandwich cylindrical shell derived based on first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The Galerkin method is used to discriminate the motion equations and the equations are converted to the form of the ordinary differential equations in terms of time. The perturbation method is employed to find the relation between nonlinear frequency and the amplitude of vibration. The main objective of this research is to determine the nonlinear frequencies and nonlinear vibration control by using sensor and actuator layers. The effects of geometrical parameters, power law index of core, sensor and actuator layers, angular velocity and scale transformation parameter on nonlinear frequency-amplitude response diagram and dynamic stability of sandwich cylindrical shell are investigated. The results of this research can be used to design and vibration control of rotating systems in various industries such as aircraft, biomechanics and automobile manufacturing.
Vibration analysis of embedded functionally graded (FG)-carbon nanotubes (CNT)-reinforced piezoelectric cylindrical shell subjected to uniform and non-uniform temperature distributions are presented. The structure is subjected to an applied voltage in thickness direction which operates in control of vibration behavior of system. The CNT reinforcement is either uniformly distributed or functionally graded (FG) along the thickness direction indicated with FGV, FGO and FGX. Effective properties of nano-composite structure are estimated through Mixture low. The surrounding elastic foundation is simulated with spring and shear constants. The material properties of shell and elastic medium constants are assumed temperature-dependent. The motion equations are derived using Hamilton's principle applying first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Based on differential cubature (DC) method, the frequency of nano-composite structure is obtained for different boundary conditions. A detailed parametric study is conducted to elucidate the influences of external applied voltage, elastic medium type, temperature distribution type, boundary conditions, volume percent and distribution type of CNT are shown on the frequency of system. In addition, the mode shapes of shell for the first and second modes are presented for different boundary conditions. Numerical results indicate that applying negative voltage yields to higher frequency. In addition, FGX distribution of CNT is better than other considered cases.

In this paper, viscous fluid induced nonlinear free vibration and instability analysis of a functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) cylindrical shell integrated with two uniformly distributed piezoelectric layers on the top and bottom surfaces of the cylindrical shell are presented. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are selected as reinforcement and effective material properties of FG-CNTRC cylindrical shell are assumed to be graded through the thickness direction and are estimated through the rule of mixture. The elastic foundation is modeled by temperature-dependent orthotropic Pasternak medium. Considering coupling of mechanical and electrical fields, Mindlin shell theory and Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Nonlinear frequency and critical fluid velocity of sandwich structure are calculated based on differential quadrature method (DQM). The effects of different parameters such as distribution type of SWCNTs, volume fractions of SWCNTs, elastic medium and temperature gradient are discussed on the vibration and instability behavior of the sandwich structure. Results indicate that considering elastic foundation increases frequency and critical fluid velocity of system.
