Determination of Consolidation Characteristics in Fine Soils Evaluated by Piezocone Tests (콘 관입시험을 이용한 연약지반 압밀특성 평가)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 연약지반의 압밀계수 측정에 있어 Piezocone 관입시험을 이용할 때 관입시험자체의 정확성과 시험결과들에 미치는 여러 가지 지반공학적 영향요소들을 고려하려는데 있다. 본 연구의 연구실험방법으로는, Piezocone 관입을 위한 연약모형지반 조성을 위하여 초대형 Slurry Consolidometer에 Free Stress 상태의 Slurry를 45일간 압밀시킨 후 Automatic Computer Control Calibration Chamber (LSU/CALCHAS; Louisiana State University Calibration Chamber System)에 옮긴후 다시한번 압밀시키는 Two-Stage Consolidation Method를 사용하였다 동시에 연약모형지반내에 8개의 Piezometer를 설치하여 Piezocone 관입시 유발되는 지반 내에서의 과잉간극수압의 변환을 측정하였다. 총 25개의 Piezocone 시험중 4개는 Standard 10$\textrm{cm}^2$ Piezocone이고, 나머지 21개는 Miniature Piezocone이 사용되었다. 모형지반은 여러 가지 Boundary Condition들과 Stress Condition 그리고 Stress History등을 고려하여 조성되었다. 또한 Dissipation Test직후의 압밀특성을 확인하기 위하여 0.01초당 한 개이상의 실측점을 측정할 수 있는 Digital-Oscilloscope를 이용하였다. 특히 Dissipation Test, 즉시 Piezocone의 Filter Element에 잡히지 않는 과잉간극수압의 Initial Drop 존재에 관한 기존의 추측을 실제 실험치로 확인할 수 있었다.

  • Recently, the importance of investigation for soft ground has been raised, so that various techniques of the investigation for soft ground are being introduced and applied. In particular, Piezocone penetration test has been utilized frequently home and abroad to identify many features of grounds precisely and gain various results in accordance with dividing strata and depth constantly by measuring continuously. In this study, to identify some features of soft clays distributed in the estuary of Nakdong river, researchers conducted field tests and laboratory tests with boring tests, and analyzed and compared with Piezocone penetration test. In addition, credible Piezocone factor of communities of subjects for this study was estimated to analyze some features of undrained shear strength of clay and calculate Piezocone factor compared with corrected cone resistance and apply some statistical techniques to estimated Piezocone factor.

Piezocone Factors of Korean Clayey Soils (국내 점성토 지반의 피에조콘 계수)

  • In order to evaluate undrained shear strength of clayey soils using Piezocone Penetration Test (CPTu), piezoncone factor is utilized. Commonly, piezoncone factors determined by empirical basis were preferred, which were established by correlation between measurements of piezocone test and undrained strengths obtained from other shearing tests. However, previous studies on the empirical piezocone factors were site-specific and there have been no systematic investigations on the effect of both engineering characteristics of clayey soils and soil non-homogeneity on the piezocone factor. Accordingly, the direct application of the previous results to Korean clayey soils without verification may be inappropriate. In this study, empirical piezocone factors are evaluated by comparing 46 CPTu results of 10 test sites with undrained shear strength obtained from Field Vane Test (FVT) and laboratory triaxial tests. Their reliabilities are investigated by the comparison with the previous piezocone factors and the deviation of data distribution from the mean values. And the effects of referencing test methods and typical engineering characteristics of clayey soils such as overconsolidation ratio (OCR) and plastic Index (I$_{p}$) are examined. Because piezocone factors obtained for various soil conditions are widely distributed, it is not appropriate to use the mean value as a representative. Instead, it is recommended to apply the piezocone factors with OCR, which is found to be a major factor in deriving piezocone factor. The necessitated piezocone factors are presented.d.

  • Applying graph and correlation developed in other countries to the domestic field has limits. Therefore, it is necessary that Piezocone factor should be determined by including ground characteristics obtained from various test results in the domestic site for better application. In this study, laboratory tests and field tests were performed to find the characteristics of soft ground which was widely distributed around Siwha lake. A comparative analysis of these tests with Piezocone penetration test was performed and the Piezocone factor was estimated by correlationship analysis of undrained shear strength and cone resistance. Also, an appropriate Piezocone factor in the study site was reestimated by utilizing statistical analysis method for deriving reliable result.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 Piezocone 관입시험을 이용한 연약지반의 OCR 평가에 있어 기존의 여러 가지 해석방법들과 최근에 새롭게 제안된 방법들을 실내 모형토조에서 실측된 피에조콘 관입 실험치에 적용하여 각 해석방법들의 차이와 장단점들을 비교 분석하는데 있다. 본 연구의 연구실험방법으로는, Piezocone 관입을 위한 연약 모형지반 조성을 위하여 초대형 Slurry Consolidometer에 Free Stress 상태의 Slurry를 45일간 압밀시킨후 Automatic Computer Control Calibration Chamber (LSU/CALCHAS; Louisiana Slate University Calibration Chamber System)에 옮긴후 다시한번 압밀시키는 Two-Stage Consolidation Method를 사용하였다. 모형지반은 여러 가지 Boundary Condition들과 Stress Condition 그리고 Stress History등을 달리하여 총 5개의 지반을 조성하였다. 관입시험은 총 25개의 Piezocone 관입이 수행되어졌고, 그중 4개는 Standard 10 cm2 Piezocone이고, 나머지 21개는 Miniature Piezocone이 사용되었다. Piezocone 실험치들에 대한 여러 가지 OCR 해석방법 적용결과, Schmertmann방법은 5개 모형지반 모두에서 과다한 OCR평가를 보였으며, $B_{q}$ 방법은 일부모형지반에서 음의 OCR값으로 계산되어졌다. 그러나, Critical-Stale Soil Mechanics 와 Cavity Expansion 이론에 근거하여 Mayne(1991), Kurup(1993), Tumay et al (1995) 들이 제안한 OCR 평가방법들은 실험치와 잘맞는 경향을 보여주었다. 이와같은 이론 모델값들의 차이는 응력조건(Stress Condition)과 경계조건(Boundary Condition)들에 대한 각 해석방법들의 고려정도에 따른 결과로 판단된다.

Estimation of Soft Ground Piezocone Factors at Gwangyang, Jeonnam (전남 광양지역 연약지반의 피에조콘계수 산정)

  • Using the results from laboratory soil test, field vane test and piezocone penetration test, the engineering characteristics of the soft ground at east side of Gwangyang Port, which is located at south coast of Jeollanam-do, were investigated and optimal piezocone penetration test depth was derived to calculate piezocone factor. In this paper, the results of 61 laboratory soil tests, 226 times of field vane tests and 26 piezocone penetration tests were used. The result of laboratory soil test suggested that some physical properties such as specific gravity, moisture content, liquid limit and plastic index and others are higher than other south coast regions, meanwhile uniaxial compression strength, undrained shear strength, defined as mechanical property, appeared to be relatively small, distributed widely. According to the plastic chart, the ground was classified as high compressibility clay and low compressibility clay, mostly represent to Type 3 clay by Robertson (1990)'s classification chart. Piezocone factor was calculated by empirical method, based on the undrained shear strength which was obtained by the field vane test. According to the analysis with 3 different depth range, to set the appropriate measured depth range of piezocone penetration for comparation, using average value of the range of 5 times the vane length showed the highest correlation.

A Study on Determination of Piezocone Coefficients of Soft Clay Ground (연약지반의 피에조콘계수 결정에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, piezocone coefficients of clays (Hwasung, Gunsan, Changwon, Busan) were analyzed from piezocone penetration tests those accompanied with vane shear and UU tests. Piezocone coefficients of west sea clays (Hwasung, Gunsan), i.e, Nkt is 12.6 and Nqu is 8.8, while those of south sea clays are 16.5 and 9.2 respectively. The difference of liquid limit between south and west clays causes main roles those which west sea clay is generally lower than 50%, i.e, CL, and liquid limit of south sea clay is mostly higher than 50%, i.e CH. Piezocone coefficients obtained from several tests show similar trends even though they still have some differences depending on each test. However, they show clear differences depending on liquid limit. Therefore, piezocone coefficients need to be used with caution depending on LL.

Influence of Penetration Rate on Piezocone Penetration Test (변형율 속도가 콘관입시험에 미치는 영향)

  • 본 연구에서는 콘관입속도가 콘관입시험 결과에 미치는 영향을 연구하기 위하여 LSU/CALCHAS(Louisiana State University Calibration Chamber System)를 이용한 미니 Piezocone의 관입시험이 수행되었으며 그 결과를 비교 분석하였다. 10회의 미니 Piezocone 관입시험이 Ko 조건에서 수행되었으며 33% kaolin, 67% sand mixture가 시료로 사용되었고, 콘관입속도 0.3, 0.6cm/sec, U1(filter element at the cone tip), U2(filter element above the cone base), OCR=1, 10 의 조건이 다양하게 적용되었다. 시험결과 Cone Resistance, Excess Pore Water Pressure, Sleeve Friction 은 U1, U2 두 종류의 콘에 대해서 모두 관입속도가 커짐에 따라 증가하였으나 OCR의 증가에 따라서는 감소하였으며 U1의 Excess Pore Water Pressure가 U2 경우보다 크게 측정되었다.

  • 본 연구에서는 비등방성 응력조건 하에서 콘 관입속도가 콘 관입시험 결과에 미치는 영향을 연구하기 위하여 유한요소해석 및 Calibration Chamber를 이용한 Miniature Piezocone의 관입시험이 수행되었으며 그 결과를 비교 분석하였다. 비등방성을 고려하기 위하여 Anisotropic Soil Model이 유한요소해석에 이용되었으며 LSU/CALCHAS(Louisiana State University Calibration Chamber System)가 Miniature Piezocone의 관입시험에 이용되었다. 콘 관입속도의 영향이외에도 OCR 및 필터위치의 영향을 고찰하였다.
