To determine the use of waste materials as root zone soil mixtures for turfgrass culture, the effects of paper mill sludge and briquet ash on physical and chemical properties of soil and growth of turfgrasses were examined. Three turfgrass species of zoysiagrass(Zoysia japonicaSteud.). kentycky bluegrass(Poa pratensis L. 'Ram I') and creeping bentgrass(Agrostis panistris Huds 'Persucross') were cultured in 32cm diameter plastic pots containing various soil mixtures. The basic ingredients used for mixtures included sand(SD), field soil(SL), paper mill sludge(PS), sphagnum peat moss(PM) and briquet ash(BA). Seven combinations using these ingreients were mixed in different percentage by volume as follows: SD+SL+PM(80:10.10), SH+SL+PS(80:10:10), SD-PM(80:20), SD+PS (80:20), SD+BA(80:20), SD+BA+PM(60:20:20) and SD+BA+PS(60:20:20). 1. Paper mill sludge showed pH of 6.6, more than 30% of organic matter content, and higher concentrations of total N, P, k, Ca, Mg and CEC. Bulk density, fild moisture capacity and electrical conductivity of soil mixtures were increased by the comimation of 10~20% PS by volume. 2. Briquet ash showed pH of 8.0, and higher levels of P, k, Ca and Mg than those of field soiks. Bulk density, field moisture capacity and hardenss of soil mixtures were increased but vertical water flow rate and electrical conductivity were decreased by the combination of 20% BA by volume. 3. Phytotoxic effects of PS and BA on growth of turfgrasses were not found. Shoot growth of all three species was higher in soil combination of SD+BA+PS than that of SD+SL+PM added with fertilizer. However, root growth was better in soil mixtures combined with PM. Soil mixtureomposed of 60% SD, 20% BA and 20% PS by volume was most effective on growth of all three species. 4. Paper mill sludge resulted in higher N level in the leaf tissue. The contents of heavy metals such as Cd and Ph did not vary significantly among soil mixtures and species. However, the Mn level was 2~3 times higher in plants growh in mixtures containing PM compared with others, and especially it was higher in creeping bentgrass than other species.

Allelopathic activity of methanol extract from medicinal plants was determined based on the inhibition of germination, shoot and root length of Echinochloa crus-galli. The response was depended on the source of extracts and concentrations. Of the 20 test plants tested, Cnidium officinale showed most inhibition according to germination, shoot and root length of E. crus-galli. Based on the plant parts, the root extract of C. officinale had more inhibitory effect on E. crus-galli than the stem+leaf extract. Phytotoxic effects of the root extract on E. crus-galli showed 75% inhibition of seed germination, 95% inhibition of shoot growth, and 100% inhibition of root growth at the concentration of 1g/petridish. Sequential partitioning of root extract with organic solvents with increasing polarity showed that the ethylacetate fraction had the greatest inhibitory effect on E. crus-galli. Germination was not inhibited at any rate of ethylacetate fraction but shoot and root growth, were significantly inhibited even at 2mg/petridish. This indicates that the most toxic phytotoxin present in the root extract may be moderate polar compound.

These studies were carried out to investigate the toxicities of 33 registered insecticide to the American serpentine leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii. Insecticidal activities were evaluated by testing systemic action and residual effect in the laboratory, and control efficacy and phytotoxicity in the greenhouse. All insecticides used in this study did not effect on the egg of L. trifolii, although spinosad showed 70% of egg-hatch suppression. For L. trifolii larvae ($2{\sim}3$ instar), the insecticides with over 95% of insecticidal activity were abamectin, cartap, cyromazine, emamectin benzoate, diflubenzuron + chlorpyrifos. The Insecticide what showed over 90% of insecticidal activity or neonate larvae were abamectin, cartap, emamectin benzoate, diflubenzuron + chlorpyrifos and milbemectin. Only cartap + buprofezin showed over 95% insecticidal activity against L. trifolii pupae. Almost insecticides used in this study little or not effected on the adult of L. trifolii. Emamectin benzoate and milbemectin showed moderate foliar systemic effects on eggs of L. trifolii (53.3, 47.9%, respectively). However, other insecticides showed little systemic effect. For larvae and adults, all insecticides showed low systemic effects. Insecticides with over 90% residual effect for 10 days were abamectin, emamectin benzoate and milbemectin (91.4, 90.4, 91.9%, respectively). In the control efficacy test on L. trifolii 90% of control values were obtained at 14th day after treatment of the insecticides including abamectin, cyromazine, emamectin benzoate and milbemectin. Cartap and cartap + buprofezin showed slight phytotoxicity on kidney bean leaf, however, other insecticides showed no phytotoxic effects. These results indicate that abamectin, emamectin benzoate and milbemectin can be used for tile control of L. trifolii in field.
Herbicidal effects and crop selectivity of aqueous leaf extracts of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) were evaluated against several weed species for developing sustainable weed management in organic farming. Aqueous sorghum leaf extracts were highly phytotoxic to different weed species. No broadleaf weeds were germinated in the concentration of 5 fold or higher concentrated sorghum leaf extracts and 90% of seed germination was inhibited within that range in grass species. Sorghum leaf extracts strongly inhibited the growth of different weeds by pre-emergence and foliar applications in greenhouse condition. Foliar application of sorghum leaf extracts had a higher inhibitory effect than the pre-emergence application. Broadleaf weed species were more susceptible than grasses to the application of sorghum leaf extract in foliar applications than grasses. Galium spurium, Erigeron candensis, and Rumex japonicus were completely killed at the highest concentrated sorghum leaf extract both in pre-emergence and foliar application. Most broadleaf weed species were inhibited more than 80% at pre-emergence application at 50 fold concentrated sorghum leaf extract. G. spurium, E. candensis, R. japonicus, Eclipta alba, Plantago asiatica and Portulaca oleraeea were most susceptible to sorghum leaf extract in foliar application. Growth of most broad leaf weed species was suppressed by greater than 90% at 50 fold concentrated sorghum leaf extract. Most crop species were tolerant to sorghum leaf extract but shoot growth was slightly reduced by the application of 40~50 fold concentrated extracts, Sorghum leaf extract may used to control weeds in organic fanning without affecting the growth of crop.
Fluorine is unique chemical element which occurs naturally, but is not an essential nutrient for plants. Fluoride toxicity can arise due to excessive fluoride intake from a variety of natural or manmade sources. Fluoride is phytotoxic to most plants. Plants which are sensitive for fluorine exposure even low concentrations of fluorine can cause leave damage and a decline in growth. All vegetation contains some fluoride absorbed from soil and water. The highest levels of F in field-grown vegetables are found up to $40mg\;kg^{-1}$ fresh weight although fluoride is relatively immobile and is not easily leached in soil because most of the fluoride was not readily soluble or exchangeable. Also, high concentrations of fluoride primarily associated with the soil colloid or clay fraction can increase fluoride levels in soil solution, increasing uptake via the plant root. In soils more than 90 percent of the natural fluoride ranging from 20 to $1,000{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ is insoluble, or tightly bound to soil particles. The excess accumulation of fluorides in vegetation leads to visible leaf injury, damage to fruits, changes in the yield. The amount of fluoride taken up by plants depending on the type of plant, the nature of the soil, and the amount and form of fluoride in the soil should be controlled. Conclusively, fluoride is possible and long-term pollution effects on plant growth through accumulation of the fluoride retained in the soil.
Pistia stratiotes(Water Lettuce) can be applied to remove inorganic pollutants from the wastewater for the advanced treatment. This study attempts to remove heavy metals from the secondary treated wastewater. Three different initial concentrations of heavy metals were applied as 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mg/L for Lead(Pb) and Chromium(Cr(VI)). In addition, the removal efficiency for the mixture of Lead and Chromium was also observed. The removal efficiency of Pb was in the range of 41.0~72.0% for Pb and it was in the range of 25.0~30.0% for Cr(VI) by Pistia stratiotes. The plants placed in static systems were able to remove the heavy metals in a few days of exposure. However, it was observed that the heavy metals affected produce phytotoxic effects on plants resulting in inhibition of chlorophyl synthesis, decrease in biomass production, and finally plant necrosis. The removal efficiencies of Pb and Cr(VI) by Pistia stratiotes were increased with plant growth.
An antiviral producing bacterial strain was isolated from a ginseng rhizosphere in Kangwon province of Republic of Korea. In order to identify the bacterial strain, microbiological, physiological and biochemical tests were performed, along with RAPD, 16S rRNA, 16S-23S rRNA ITS (intergenic spacer region) and DNA-DNA hybridization analyses. The bacterium was found to be a strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens, which was designated as Gpf01. The strain was grown in Muller-Hinton (MH) broth, and the culture supernatant obtained was filtered through a $0.45{\mu}l$ filter. It was further boiled at $100^{\circ}C$ and tested in two experiments for its ability to control a yellow strain of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV-Y). In the first experiment, boiled culture filtrate (RCF) was treated on one half of the leaves of Chenopodium amaranticolor followed by CMV- Y inoculation on both halves. In the second experiment, BCF was treated on the lower leaves of Nicotiana tobacum var. Xanthi-nc, with the CMV-Y mechanically inoculated onto the upper untreated leaves. In the first experiment, BCF treatment was able to considerably reduce the number of viral lesion, and in the second experiment, plants treated with BCF showed no visible viral symptoms compared to the Muller-Hinton (MH) media treated controls 15 days post inoculation (dpi), and remained symptomless throughout the study period. Thus, Gpf01, identified as P. fluorescence, was able to produce an antiviral component in the culture filtrate, which was found to be heat stable, non-phytotoxic and effective in local as well as systemic hosts of CMV.
Certain ericaceous understory plants of temperate forests proliferate following forest clearcutting and fire. Rapid vegetative growth of these plants may affect conifer regeneration due to their strong competitive abilities and allelopathic properties. Planted conifers in these shrub-dominated habitats experience "growth check" which may result in a loss of productivity or in extreme cases total failure of forest regeneration. This growth check phenomenon is exemplified in Calluna Sitca spruce Scots pine ecosystems of western Europe, Kalmia black spruce ecosystem of eastern Canada and Gaultheria-cedar/hemlock ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Dynamics of Kalmia black spruce ecosystem following disturbance was used to explain the mechanism of conifer growth inhibition and their regeneration failure. It is argued that in addition to competition for nutrients, Kalmia allelopathy plays a major role in growth inhibition of black spruce. This conclusion is supported by the results of various field, laboratory and greenhouse experiments. Eight phenolic compounds were isolated and identified from the leaves of Kalmia angustifolia, four of which are known to be highly phyotoxic to black spruce. Methods of overcoming the allelopathic effects of Kalmia in order to enhance black spruce regeneration in Kalmia-dominated sites are discussed.
This study was conducted to investigate the phytotoxic effects of 19 essential oils on seed germination and initial growth of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). We found that anise, cinnamon, citronella, clove, geranium, lemongrass, mustard and pine oils completely inhibited germination of rapeseed at $100{\times}$ dilute solution. Based on the inhibition rates of rapeseed emergence and initial growth, three essential oils (cinnamon, clove, and geranium) were selected as potential bio-herbicides. Under pre-emergence applications of cinnamon, clove, and geranium oils at 90 kg ai $ha^{-1}$, rates of rapeseed emergence were 7.1, 25.0, and 3.6% and its initial growth were 22.0, 9.9 and 11.0%, respectively.
The compatibility of herbicide use for soybean cultivation was evaluated from the field and pot trials. Comparing with the check plot, the effects of herbicides at their several doses on the phytotoxic stability of crop plants and on the weeding efficacy were studied. Statistically significant differences were found among the doses, and not among herbicides and interactions between herbicide and dose. Risks on the compatibility for crop plant and weeding efficacy were recognized from the excess-dosed treatments of herbicides tried.
