  • The Shihwa constructed wetland was established for the treatment of severely polluted water from Banwoul, Donghwa and Samhwa streams, This study was focused on investigating dynamics of phytoplankton community at 5 stations of open waters in the Shihwa constructed wetland from October 2001 to July 2002. The concentration of T-N and T-P of inlet stations from the streams were decreased by flowed through the wetland. However, the TN/TP ratios at all stations were shown as a little over 16 indicating that the T-P plays an important role as a limitation factor. Phytoplankton communities were identified as a total of 413 taxa which were composed of 375 species, 21 varieties, 2 forma and 15 unidentified species. The standing crops of phytoplankton communities and chlorophyll-a concentrations ranged 330 ${\sim}$ 36, 420 cells $mL^{-1}$ and $2.5\;{\sim}\;170.7\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ respectively, and showed a decreasing tendency after flowing through the wetland at almost stations. Dominant species were 14 taxa at all stations which were Euglena oblonga, Synura spinosa, and etc. The species composition, standing crops and chlorophyll concentrations of phytoplankton communities appeared a distinct differences between open waters of inlet from stream and open waters flowed through the wetland. Theses results were affected from decreasing effects of TN, TP and SS by flowed through the wetland from inlet waters of streams.

  • In order to clarify water quality, dynamics and structure of phytoplankton communities, and red tides, the present study was carried out monthly from July to September 1998 at 19 stations in Deukryang Bay. Water temperature varied from 24.$0^{\circ}C$ to 28.6$^{\circ}C$, and salinities ranged from 25.0$\textperthousand$ to 28.6$\textperthousand$. During red tides in July, chlorophyll-$\alpha$ contents were rather high in August, it showed that phytoplankton controlled primary production in this bay. Phytoplankton was composed of 89 diatoms, 19 dinoflagellates, and 3 silicoflagellates. Phytoplankton standing crops varied from a minimum of 1.3$\times$10$^4$cells/ι(Sept., St. 17) to a maximum of 3.8$\times$10$^{6}$ cells/ι (July, St. 10). Red tides occurred in July when the standing crops averaged 1.8$\times$10$^{6}$ cells/ι. Leading the causative organisms of red tide were Prorocentrun minimum in the upper bay, Chaetoceros curvisetus in the mouth and middle part of the bay, Ceratium furca and Thazassio- sira sp. around Nokdong Harbour. Concentration of nutrients such as nitrogen was high in the upper bay, during red tides, water temperatures varied from 23.8$^{\circ}C$ to 29.7$^{\circ}C$ and salinity were 23.l$\textperthousand$ to 27.0$\textperthousand$.

  • This study was conducted to find the structure of phytoplankton community in the Hoeya river(Ulsan) from March 2000 to February 2001. The taxa of phytoplankton identified included 135 species, 5 divisions, 33 families and 82 genera. Among them, chrysophyta(diatoms) were 63 species(46.7%), chlorophyta(green algae) 47 species(34.8%), pyrrophyta(dinoflagellates) 13 species(9.6%), cyanophyta (cyanobacteria) 8 species(5.9%) and euglenophyta(euglenoids) 4 species(3.0%) respectively. Ecological important species is called frequently appearing species, red tide causative species, seawater species and pollution indicator. 22 species including Aulacoseira granulate were recorded frequently appearing species. 19 species including Ceratium furca were recorded as red tide causing species. And the pollution indicators were 33 species including Actinastrum hantzschii var. fluviatile. The highest standing crops were 3,103,441 cells/$\ell$ in August at the RW-1 and the lowest 1,245 cells/ $\ell$ in January at the RW-5. In the community analysis, the dominanance indices ranged from 0.34(October, RW-2) to 0.94(January, RW-1) and the diversity indices from 0.50(May, RW-2) to 2.57(September, RW-2). The saprobic indices were 2.43 in RW-1, 2.41 in RW-2, 2.375 in RW-3, 2.40 in RW-4, 2.43, in RW-5. Therefore, these areas were investigated "$\beta$-mesosaprobic". According to the similarity index among the stations, these areas were defined as residential district areas(RW-2 and RW-3), lower part of the dam (RW-1) and seawater areas(RW-4 and RW-5).

  • To estimate the effects of limitation nutrients for phytoplankton growth and its influences on short-term variations of a winter phytoplankton community structure, we investigated the abiotic and biotic factors of surface and bottom waters at 20 stations of inner and offshore areas from 6 to 7 February in Gwangyang Bay, Korea. Also, several algal bio-assay studies were conducted to identify any additional nutrient effects on phytoplankton assemblage using surface water for the assay. The dominant species in the bay was diatom Skeletonema costatum, which occupied more than 70% of total species in most stations (St.1-16) of the inner bay. According to a cluster and multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis based on phytoplankton community data from each station, the bay was divided into three groups. The first group included stations from the south-western parts of Myodo lsland, which can be characterized as a semien-closed eutrophic area with high phytoplankton abundance. The second group included most stations from the north-eastern part of Myodo lsland, influenced indirectly by surface water currents from offshore of the bay. The standing phytoplankton crops were lower than those of the first group. The other cluster was restricted to samples collected from offshore of the bay. In the bay, silicon (Si) and phosphorus (P) were not a major limiting factor for phytoplankton production. However, since the DIN: DIP and DSi: DIN ratios clearly demonstrated that there were potential stoichiometric N limitations, nitrogen (N) was considered as a limiting factor. Based on the algal bio-assay, in vivo fluorescence values in N (+) added experiments were higher compared to control and P added experiments. Our results suggested that nitrogen may act as one of the most important factors in controlling primary production during winter in Gwangyang Bay.

  • The phytoplankton ecology of estuarine waters was investigated in the Kyeonggi Bay from May 1981 to September 1982 on monthly basis. In this study area, a total of 228 phytoplankton species was identified. Among these taxa, the most dominant species are diatoms in this area. Tychopelagic plankton occupies 40.4% of total species. The percentage of tychopelagic plankton density ranged from 10.2% in September to 92.7% in March of monthly standing crops. From late autumn to early spring, the percentage values are more than 72%. They play an important role from late autumn to early spring in this estuarine plandton community. These tychopelagic planktons are induced from benthic diatoms. Because the bottom shear stresses generated by the tides and winds are stronger than the adhesive and tractive force of benthic diatoms, most of benthic diatoms must be resuspended into tychopelagic suspensions during autumn and winter. Paralia sulcata is the most important tychopelagic plankton as an indicator species of water mixing in the eastern coastal area of Yellow Sea. This species seems to have even broader tolerance to the environmental stress than Skeletonema costalum, and tends to fill the gaps in winter, when the phytoplandton is relatively unsuccessful. Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros debilis are dominant in other seasons. Typical blooms of phytoplankton occur in spring and early autumn, The first bloom is started by Skeletonema costatum in early May, second peak is formed by various diatom population in September.

  • Dynamics of phytoplankton community were monthly examined at two sites in Lake Juam from January to December 2003. One site is located near the Dam, an intake tower, where obtain a drinking water resource, the other site is located in the shallow region, Mundeok-bridge, the upstream or effluent part of lake. During the study, there made little the differences in physicochemical factors between two sites, but numbers of species and standing crops of phytoplankton differ remarkably. Totally, 41% of green algae and 35.8% of diatoms were comprised of total phytoplankton species, while 46.3% of dinoflagellates and 27.6% of cyanobacteria contributed in total standing crops of Phytoplankton community. Cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginora and diatom Fragilaria crotonensis dominated the Dam site during a warm season, while dinoflagellates Peridinium bipes and Asterionella formosa were at the shallow region during a cold season, respectively. According to the CCA analysis, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand and total phosphate strongly affected the growth of P. bipes with low water temperature. In addition, the increment of total nitrogen and water temperature affected biomass of a cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa. Collectively, it may suggest that the majority of annual primary production of Lake Juam is covered by two dominant species Peridinium bipes in cold season and Microcystis aeruginosa in warm season.

  • This study was conducted to investigate a seasonal variation of phytoplankton communities at 6 stations in the Hantan River from November, 2001 to August, 2002. Electric conductivity gradually increased from the upper reaches to the down reaches. DO differed not much from the upper reaches to down reaches, but it decreased at the station where the pollutants inflowed. T-N and T-P concentrations were high at station 4${\sim}$6. Chlorophyll-a concentration gradually increased at the mid and down reaches. It was high in May but decreased in August by the heavy rains. Phytoplankton communities were identified a total 354 taxa composed of 99 genus, 320species, 19 varieties, 3 forma and 12 unidentified species. There were 135 taxa of Chlorophyceae, 134 taxa of Bacillariophyceae, and the other taxa were Euglenophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Xanthophycaea, Chrysophyceae and Dinophyceae. Standing crops ranged from 8,600 to 337,100 cells/mL and it was lower in August than May by the rains. Dominant species included Achnanthes alteragracillima, Achnanthes convergens, Achnanthes minutissima and Cymbella minuta var. silesiaca which were the saproxenous species at the reaches, and were Cyclotella meneghiniana, Chlamydomonas pseudopertyi and Nitzschia which were saprophilous and eutrophic species at the down reaches. The correlation coefficients between phytoplankton standing crops and EC, BOD and T-N, T-P was 0.68, 0.60, 0.60 and 0.70, respectively. All correlation coefficients between Chlorophyceae and EC, BOD and T-P were higher than 0.6. A. convergens were negative correlations with EC and BOD, but N. palea were positive with EC, BOD, T-N and T-P.

  • Spatial distribution of phytoplankton was investigated in the southwestern sea of Korea in May 2000 in terms of phytohydrography. The sampling was done at the 0m, 30m, 50m of 15 selected stations, and permanent slides of each samples were prepared by QPS method for quantitative and qualitative analyses. Phytoplankton standing crops ranged from 3.23${\times}$10$\^$-4/ to 1.09${\times}$10$\^$-7/ cellsㆍ$\ell$$\^$-1/ in the study area. Dominant species comprised of 9 diatoms and 2 phytoflagellates, showing higher dominance of diatom and most predominance of Skeletonema costatum in all layers of most stations. Phytohydrographic results indicate that the study area might be divided into 4 categories, that is, I area is designated as neritic area where occurrence of terrestrial and coastal species is frequent, II area as intermediate area, III area as offshore area where oceanic species dominate, and IV area as other's. Especially in the II area, Skeletonema costatum was most predominant at both surface and 30m layer in most stations and represent an characteristic of northward expansion with spring massive bloom.
