Inorganic nutrient concentrations in relation to springtime physical parameters of the Yellow Sea were investigated during April 1996. Three major water masses, i.e., the Yellow Sea Warm Current Water (YSWC), Coastal Current Water (CCW) and Changjiang River Diluted Water (CRDW), prevailed in the study area. Water masses were vertically wel1 mixed throughout the study area, and nutrients were supplied adequately from bottom to surface layer. As result of ample nutrients supplied by vertical mixing together with progressed daylight condition, springtime phytoplankton blooms were observed, which was responsible for the depletion of inorganic nutrients in surface water column. Low nutrients concentration in bottom water of the central Yellow Sea (Stn. D9; nitrate: <2 ${\mu}$M, phosphate: <0.3 ${\mu}$) was associated with the entrance of YSWC which is characterized by high temperature and salinity. Influenced by runoff and vertical tidal mixing, CCW with high nutrient concentrations probably associated with China and Korea coastal waters with high nutrients concentration. For the local scale of inorganic nutrient distribution, nutrient transfers from coast to central areas were limited due to restriction imposed by tidal fronts (Stn. D6) and thus affected the horizontal nutrient profiles. Relatively high phytoplankton biomass was observed in the tidal front (Chl-${\alpha}$=12.38 ${\mu}$gL$^{-1}$) during the study period. Overall, the springtime nutrient distribution patterns in the Yellow Sea appeared to be affected by: (1) Large-scale influx of YSWC with low nutrient concentrations and CCW with high nutrient concentrations influenced by Korea and China coastal waters; (2) vertical mixing of water mass and phytoplankton distribution; and (3) local-scale tidal front as well as phytoplankton blooms alongthe tidal front.

To determine whether nitrogen (N) uptake by phytoplankton below the euphotic zone in the Yellow Sea is considerable, we measured the uptake rates of nitrate and ammonium using $^{15}N$-labeled stable isotope $K^{15}NO_{3}$ and $^{15}NH_{4}Cl$, in May and November 1997 at total 10 stations. Depth-integrated uptake rates of nitrate and ammonium over the euphotic zone during this study ranged from 1.8 to 15.3 mg N $m^{-2}$$d^{-1}$ and from 5.0 to 132.2 mg N $m^{-2}$$d^{-1}$, respectively, and ammonium uptake predominated at 9 of 10 stations (1.9-19.4 fold). Depth-integrated uptake rates of nitrate and ammonium over the whole water column ranged from 2.9 to 22.0 mg N $m^{-2}$$d^{-1}$ and from 15.7 to 175.5 mg N $m^{-2}$$d^{-1}$, respectively. The significant proportion of whole water column N uptake was attributed to uptake by phytoplankton below the euphotic zone, ranging from 13.0 to 86.2% for nitrate and from 13.8 to 67.8% for ammonium, indicating that phytoplankton N uptake below the euphotic zone is at times considerable in the study area. The results suggest that when phytoplankton below the euphotic zone in the Yellow Sea are again entrained into the euphotic zone by a certain physical forcing such as turbulent mixing and the vertical movement of thermocline, these episodic events may significantly affect the material fluxes within the euphotic zone. Furthermore, the results suggest that a portion of regenerated production estimated from $^{15}N$-ammonium uptake should be included in new production estimates, which otherwise could be underestimated in the Yellow Sea.
The influence of atmospheric aerosol on satellite ocean color data were evaluated using SeaWiFS monthly standard mapped image products. The atmospheric optical thickness (AOT) was increased in spring and summer, and it showed the strong positive correlation with remote sensing reflectance, normalized waterleaving radiance /solar irradiance, at 555 nm (Rrs555) which is a component of the satellite chlorophyll estimation. Such the high AOT and high Rrs555 pixels showed overestimation of satellite chlorophyll in spring, especially in the area which showed large phytoplankton absorption which 1s expressed by low remote sensing reflectance at 443, 490 and 510 nm (Rrs 443, Rrs490 and Rrs510).
Participating in a multi-disciplinary oceanography program in July 1997 in the vicinity of Tokdo, we studied the distributions of bacterial abundance and production along with those of phytoplankton and heterotrophic nanoflagellates. In the euphotic zone, chlorophyll a (chl a) concentrations ranged from 0.14 to 0.52 ${\mu}$g 1$^{-1}$. Bacterial abundance in the euphotic zone (0.12-0.21 ${\times}$ 10$^9$ cells 1$^{-1}$) in the study area was quite lower than that expected from the observed chi a concentration in the marine environment. The low bacterial abundance seemed to be due to active grazing pressure on bacteria. The fraction of primary production utilized by bacteria was also low(8-12%). Interestingly, surface water temperatures were love. at stations near islands compared to an offshore station located between Ulleungdo and Tokdo and the highest values of bacterial production and chi a were found at stations near islands, strongly indicating island mass effects.
Phytoplanktons and environmental conditions in the Geum River near Gongju were investigated at three stations in July, 1979. Fifty eight kinds of hytoplanktons were identified and of these, Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta in this area appeared more in the number of species than that in the Han River. The number of species of Chlorophyta was double or more at station 2 and station 3 which were situated near Gongju than at station 1, upperstream of Gongju and the number of species of phytoplankton was also higher at station 2 and station 3 than at station 1. In physicochemcial conditons, water temperature at all of three stations was lower than air temperature and pH might have no significance among these three stations. All of these three stations were characterized as the slower flowing water type of downstream in diatom river community.
To explore limiting factors of spring bloom caused by waste disposal after dumping activity commenced in the Yellow Sea, we used a 1-dimensional temperature-ecological coupled model. The vertical structure of temperature and vertical diffusivity (Kh) are calculated by the temperature model with sea surface temperature using the 2.5 layers turbulence closure scheme. The ecological model applied results at the temperature model consisted of five state variables (DIN, DIP, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and detritus) forced by photosynthetically available radiation. We simulate year-to-year variations of plankton and nutrients using the coupled model from 1998 to 2000 and compare results of the model with observed data. It turned out that temperature is the growth factor of spring bloom in dumping area. During the winter the weak stratification made sufficient supply of the accumulated nutrients from the sea bed into the upper water column and led to the bloom in the coming spring. Radiation also turned out to be another important factor of spring bloom in the study area. Insufficient radiation of March 1999 showed low chlorophyll-a concentration despite sufficient nutrients in the surface.
Chemical oxygen demand (COD), phytoplankton cell number and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), sediment mean grain size and ignition loss were studied to determine their temporal trends in the study area. Historical data of COD, cell number and Chl-a were gathered from the late 1960s or early 1980s to 1997, and trends in temporal domain were obtained from a simple regression. Sediments for grain size and ignition loss (as organic contents in sediments) were sampled from the Chokchon macrotidal flat bimonthly from September 1990 to November 1996, and were analyzed using the decomposition method of time series analysis. In general, the first three data showed increasing trends based on regression analysis. The trends of sediment grain size fluctuated in a neutral pathway while those of ignition loss yielded no increasing pattern. In contrast with the suggestions from Ahn and Choi (1998) who reported a coarsening variation in sediment grain size to be a cause of the directional and remarkable changes of macrofaunal communities in this area, we could not find such a corresponding variation pattern from our samples. In diagnosing eutrophication, a paradoxical phenomenon was encountered between the trends in water column (COD, cell number and Chl-a) and sediment (ignition loss) data. In this paper, we inferred the possible processes that produce the discrepancy. Some explanations and biological responses to eutrophication were predicted and discussed.
After a great mortality owing to abnormal oceanographical condition and fungal disease in 1973 hanging cultch lines per raft has been reduced to 450 from 558, and oyster production per raft has also been decreased. It seems to be result of dense culture of oysters and its resulting accumulation of waste materials on the sea bottom in the farm area. The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of rearing density and the degree of eutrophication in Geoje Bay for 6 months from June through November in 1977. Total area of this bay is about $48.9\;km^2$, and the area of registered oyster farms as of November in 1977 is around $10.9\;km^2$, which is about $22.3\%$ of this bay. Water Quality during summer season was shown as transparency 5.5 m, COD 1.5ppm, degree of oxygen saturation $90.6\%$ in upper and middle layers and $82.2\%$ near bottom, chlorophyll-a 3.0 mg/m^3, and phytoplankton $8.7\times10^4\;cells/l$. In superficial mud in August COD was 35.4 mg/g, total sulphide 0.24 mg/g, and phaeophytin $43.7\;{\mu}g/g$dry mud. These values indicate that water qualify in this bay is so far excellent but quantities of chemical oxygen demend and sulphide in bottom mud show maximum level or a little over eutrophication standard.
Effects of iron and/or chelator addition on primary production in the equatorial Upwelling system were studied during the TOGA(Tropical oceans and Global Atmosphere) and EPOCS (Equatorial Pacific ocean Climate Studies) cruises in June and November-December of 1989. Changes in the phytoplankton biomass and the degree of iron stress were estimated using the changes in vivo fluorescence before and after the addition of DCMU, which is an inhibitor of photosynthetic electron transposer system. Nitrate uptake was measured using /SUP 45/N labeled KNO$_3$ to estimate the new production. When samples were taken from the Upwelling area where nitrate concentration was higher than 5 uM, there were significant differences between the control and cheated iron treatments in vivo fluorescence and in nitrate uptake capacity. However, CFC (Cellular fluorescence capacity) did not show any significant difference between the control and treatments until nutrient limitation becomes severse and cells become shifted-down. Outside of the Upwelling area where surface nitrate concentration was low (below 0.5 uM), there was no significant difference between the control and treatments in vivo fluorescence and CFC. It is evident that primary and new production in the equatorial Pacific Upwelling region are limited by the availability of iron. However, the physiology of phytoplankton indigenous to this region does not appear to be iron stressed judging from CFC values.
The present study evaluated water quality variation, limiting nutrient, and sediment of a shallow eutrophic lake (Lake Ilgam) in the metropolitan area from 2000 to 2002. According to annual mean chl.a ($77.2{\pm}36.6\;{\mu}g/l) and TP ($66.6{\pm}20.5\;{\mu}g/l) concentration and trophic state index (>60), Lake llgam was in very eutrophic status. Both inorganic nitrogen ($NH_3-N$ and $NH_3-N$) and phosphorus (SRP) concentrations in the water column increased during winter and spring, but decreased during summer followed by the phytoplankton development. Evidence for phosphorus and nitrogen as being the potential limiting nutrients for phytoplankton growth was supported by the ratio of DIN/DIP (by mass) (${\sim}$835.8), TSI derivations analysis, and algal growth potential bioassay. Based on the results of TSI derivations, strong nutrient limitation by both N and P occurred from September to November when P content in sediment (114.6 mg P/kg) was relatively low compared with the summer. Sediment contained a large amount of nitrogen (TKN: 4,452${\pm}$283.0mg N/kg dry sediment). Phosphorus content in sediment (TP: 313${\pm}$155 mg P/kg) was relatively low with temporal change. P release rate (0.29${\pm}$0.02 mg $m^{-2}$$day^{-1}$) was high under the aerobic condition at pH 9. These results indicate that the sediment could play an important role as a source of a limiting nutrient, and temporal change of P content in the sediment is closely related with water quality, especially algal biomass change in Lake llgam.
