The Effect of Tree Density of Pinus koraiensis Forest on the Thermal Comfort and the Physiological Response of Human Body in Summer Season (잣나무림의 입목밀도가 여름철 온열환경 및 인체 생리반응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of tree density of Pinus koraiensis forest on the thermal comfort and the physiological response of human body in summer season. As the indicators of thermal comfort were used the predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD), while the heart rate variability was used for the physiological indicator of subjects. The subjects were 15 physically healthy men and women in their 20s ($23.7{\pm}1.7$ years old). The subjects sat in each site to measure HRV for 5 minutes and the thermal comfort of each site was measured. As a results, it was proven by PMV and PPD that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density was thermally more comfortable than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density. In case of the subjects' physiological response, the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density showed significantly higher HF of HRV than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density and significantly lower LF/HF. Therefore, the findings of this study scientifically proved that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density is thermally more comfortable and physiologically more relaxing than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density.

Estimating the Impact of Plant Surface Area Increase and Physiological Activities on Fine Dust Purification (식물에 의한 표면적 증가와 생리작용이 미세먼지 정화에 미치는 영향 추정)

  • In this study, to estimate the effects of plant-induced surface area increase and physiological activity on fine dust purification, a control group was set up. We utilized both foliage plants (Spathiphyllum wallisii) and artificial plants (shaped like Spathiphyllum wallisii) to measure and compare the purification time for fine dust. The results showed that the time required for fine dust purification in each experimental group decreased by 57-64% for Type AP and 31-32% for Type P compared to the control group. Subsequently, using a Linear Mixed Model (LMM), we tested the interaction between time and each experimental group, revealing statistically significant interactions between surface area increase and time(PM10 : t=3.123, p<0.05, PM2.5 : t=3.180, p<0.05), as well as physiological activity and time(PM10 : t=4.065, p<0.05, PM2.5 : t=4.307, p<0.05), indicating the presence of interactions between each factor and the time variable. Finally, we estimated the efficiency of fine dust purification by plant factors through nonlinear regression analysis. Compared to the control group without purification factors (Type C), it was estimated that surface area increase shortened the purification time by 1.40 times and physiological activity by an average of 1.95 times, resulting in a total 2.74 times shorter purification time. Based on these results, we hypothesized that physiological activity(transpiration and absorption) has a greater impact on fine dust purification than surface area increase(biosorption). Accordingly, we emphasize the importance of vegetation management practices such as pruning and irrigation management in green spaces aimed at fine dust purification.

  • Fingerprint recognition systems are the most widely used in biometrics for personal authentication. As they become more familiar, the security weaknesses of fingerprint sensors are becoming better known. In this paper, we propose a liveness detection method that applies correlation filter to the fingerprint recognition systems. The physiological characteristic of sweat pore, observed only in live people, is used as a measure to classify 'live' fingers from 'spoof' fingers. Previous works show that detection of sweat pores and perspiration patterns in fingerprint images can be used as an anti-spoofing measure. These methods don't consider the characteristic of pores in each individual. We construct the correlation filters of each individual which are composed of their pore information. We make the final decision about the "livens" of fingerprint using correlation output. The proposed algorithm was applied to a data set of 110 live, 110 spoof fingerprint images from optical fingerprint scanner and achieved classification rate of 80%.

  • Thus far, several in vivo biosensing platforms have been proposed to measure the mechanical contractility of cultured cardiomyocytes. However, the low sensitivity and screening rate of the developed sensors severely limit their practical applications. In addition, intensive research and development in cardiovascular disease demand a high-throughput drug-screening platform based on biomimetic engineering. To overcome the drawbacks of the current state-of-the-art methods, we propose a high-throughput drug-screening platform based on 16 functional high-sensitivity well plates. The proposed system simulates the physiological accuracy of the heart function in an in vitro environment. We fabricated 64 cantilevers using highly flexible and optically transparent silicone rubber and placed in 16 independent wells. Nanogrooves were imprinted on the surface of the cantilever to promote cell alignment and maturation. The adverse effects of the cardiovascular drugs on the cultured cardiomyocytes were systematically investigated. The 64 cantilevers demonstrated a highly reliable and reproducible mechanical contractility of the drug-treated cardiomyocytes. Real-time high-throughput screening and simultaneous evaluation of the cardiomyocyte mechanical contractility under multiple drugs verified that the proposed system could be used as an efficient drugtoxicity test platform.

Effects of Chongmyung-tang on Learning and Memory Performances in Mice

  • Chongmyung-tang(CMT, 聰明湯), oriental herbal medicine which consists of Polygaglae Radix(遠志), Acori Graminei Rhizoma(石菖蒲) and Hoelen(白茯神) has effect on amnesia, dementia. In order to evaluate effect of CMT on memory and learning in mice, CMT extract was used for studies. This paper describes the effects of CMT extract on memory and learning processes by using the passive and active avoidance performance tests, novel object recognition task and water maze task. The CMT extract ameliorated the memory retrieval deficit induced by ethanol in the passive avoidance responses but did not affect ambulatory activity of normal mice. These results suggest that CMT has an ameliorating effect on memory retrieval impairment. CMT extract decreased spontaneous motor activity(SMA) in the latter sessions of memory registration in active avoidance responses. These results suggest that CMT has partly transquilizing or antianxiety effects. In novel object recognition task to measure visual recognition memory, CMT-administered mice enhanced in long term memory for 1-3 days. In water maze task to measure spatial learning, which requires the activation of NMDA receptors in the hippocampus, spatial learning in CMT-administered mice was faster than in wild-type mice. These results suggest that CMT enhances memory and activates NMDA receptors.

Korean Treatment with Samul-tang plus Yijin-tang gamibang in Patient for Migrainous Vertigo : 2 Cases Report (사물탕합이진탕 가미방 투여한 편두통성 현훈을 치료한 치험 2례)

  • This case study reports patients suffering from migraine and vertigo had treated with Samul-tang plus Yijin-tang Gamibang. Two patients had taken Samul-tang and Yijin-tang Gamibang three times a day during hospitalization in oriental hospital. One patient had been hospitalized for 2 weeks and other had been for 3weeks. We control dose of added herbs according to other symptoms like dyspepsia, sleep discomfort, flushing, heating sense and diarrhea for each patients. We measure migraine by migraine disability assessment (MIDAS) and dizziness by korean dizziness handicap inventory (KDHI). Also we measure overall improvement with Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). The main symptoms had been steadily decreased to VAS2. Patient complaing of dyspepsia, heating sense, flushing had been improved with reduction of dyspepsia and patient with diarrhea, abdominal discomofort had been improved following reduction of diarrhea. Two patients didn't agree with study because this paper was written following retrospective study but patients claimed no side effect. Samul-tang plus Yijin-tang Gamibang may be considered as a treatment of migrainous vertigo with digestive problems.

The Effect of Family Visits on Stress Responses of Patients and Their Families in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (가족면회가 심장 중환자실 환자와 가족의 스트레스 반응에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of family visits upon the stress response of patients and their families, Methods: This study was the interrupted time series design, The subjects consisted of 197 patients and 197 family members in the cardiac intensive care unit of S Hospital in Bucheon. Physiological stress responses such as blood pressure, heart rates, respiration rates, and oxygen saturation were measured using HP monitors. VAS was used to measure the emotional stress. Collected data was analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA, t-test by SPSS 17.0 statistical program. Results: The family visits did not change patients' blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration rate and oxygen saturation, However the anxiety level of patients and their family members were decreased significantly during family visits. Furthermore, 30-minute family visit reduced more effectively patient's anxiety than 15-minute family visit. Conclusion: Family visits need to be used as a means of nursing intervention to ease the emotional stress of patients and their families. In addition, increasing of visiting time should be considered.

Vitamin B6 Requirement: Indicators and Factors Affecting (비타민 B6 필요량: 영양상태 판정지표 및 영향요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to establish the selection of indicators for estimating and factors affecting the requirement of vitamin B6. There has been a need to establish the human requirements of vitamin $B_6$ since vitamin $B_6$ is thought to be involved in more than one hundred biochemical reactions as a coenzyme in the metabolism of amino acids, glucose, and lipid, and the synthesis of neurotransmitters. For the review of the literature, this study included from early findings of the sixties to studies of 2009. This study suggests that plasma pyridoxal 5' phosphate (PLP) is the best single indicator of vitamin $B_6$ status for the healthy but not for the non-healthy. Erythrocyte aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activation by PLP as an indirect measure and urinary 4-pyridoxic acid excretion as a direct measure are useful as supporting indicators. Bioavailability, nutrient interaction, physiological need, and chronic diseases may increase the requirement for vitamin $B_6$. However, these effects can not be quantified due to insufficient evidences.

  • The period and strength of the pulse on the radial artery are important physiological factors, and they have been used to diagnosis in both Western and Eastern countries for a long time and has been developed as a unique method of diagnosis at each countries. Recently, there are a lot of systems which can give diagnosis information by recording the pulse wave and analyzing the characteristics of the pulse shape. This study describes the Pulse-Wave Measurement System which is able to measure the pulse wave signal using piezoresistive sensor and the pulse wave signal measured by the developed system is transmitted to a computer on the basis of the USB Driver. It has finally shown the the pulse wave signal measured by the sender is appeared to the host PC in real time. The Pulse-Wave Measurement System used the piezoresistive sensor to measure the pulse wave signal and the differential amplifier(AD620) to amplify the pulse wave signal which is small signal. And it used the ADC to convert analog to digital for the measured analog signal and the interface with a computer. It transmitted the measured pulse signal through USB transmission module to the host computer and Labview tool shows it. This Pulse-Wave measurement system will afford comvenience of detecting pulse wave to user related to oriental medicine.

Effectiveness of Cervical Chuna Manipulation and Acupuncture in the Management of Traumatic Temporomandibular Joint Disorder : a Case Report (경추 추나 요법과 침치료를 적용한 외상성 악관절 장애 치험 1례)

  • This case report describes the effectiveness of cervical chuna manipulation in the management of traumatic temporomandibular joint disorder. A 14-year-old male developed trismus after being stuck. He received cervical chuna manipulation and acupuncture. The mouth opening range was assessed to measure disability, and the visual analogue scale to measure discomfort. This was carried out at the beginning, during and at the end of treatment. After treatment, the patient's mouth opening range was improved from 10 mm to 45 mm. Also, the visual analogue scale was decreased. This case study suggests that cervical chuna manipulation can be effective for the management of traumatic temporomandibular joint disorder.
