The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of enhanced physiological activities in cultures isolated from Korean fermented watery Kimchi, Dongchimi, of single lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and when these three are mixed LAB as probiotics. Using the BIOLOG system and 16S rRNA sequencing, the isolates were characterized, and identified and assigned to Leuconostoc mesenteroides DK-3, Leuconostoc dextranicum DK-6, and Lactobacillus curvatus DK-13, respectively. Growth rate and pH changes, production of organic acids as metabolites, and physiological activities of the single and mixed LAB cultures, were monitored and compared. In mixed LAB cultures after 72 h of incubation, the maximum concentrations of lactic acid and acetic acid were approximately 340.5 mM and 191.9 mM, respectively, and pH changed from 7.00 to 3.62. Mixed LAB cultures were able to eliminate 96.3% of nitrite. Activities of antioxidant and ${\beta}$-galactosidase were 60.3% and 16.8 units/mg, respectively. Significant antibacterial activity of the concentrated supernatants was demonstrated against several food-poisoning bacteria. Physiological activities obtained from the mixed LAB cultures have been shown to be considerably higher than those of single LAB cultures. In conclusion, these studies demonstrate that compared to the single cultures, all physiological activities in mixed LAB cultures are significantly enhanced.

This article examines factors that influence health and quality of life. In addition to the symptomatology and physiological functioning, the influence of the psychological functioning and interpersonal relationship on the overall health and quality of life are also investigated. Using a case-study approach, a total of 70 patients suffering from allergy or asthma were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire developed by the present authors. It assessed the following six areas: Cause and onset of illness, psychological functioning, health management, trust, social support received and overall health and quality of life. Based on the transactional model (Bandura, 1997; Kim & Park, 2005), the results of the case studies have been integrated and divided into three aspects: (1) Cause and onset of illness that includes physiological and environment factors; (2) mediating influences that includes psychological functioning, health management, interpersonal relationship and social support received; and (3) outcome factor that includes symptomatology, health and quality of life. The psychological functioning includes self-efficacy (self-regulated efficacy, efficacy for enlisting social support, efficacy for managing the environment, and efficacy for overcoming difficulties), positive outlook, life goals, experience of stress, and proxy control. Interpersonal relationship includes trust of family members and the physician. Health management includes receiving proper health assessment, following the advice and prescription given by the physicians, control of the environment and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The results indicate that physiological, psychological, relational and environment factors interact with each other and affect individual's overall health and quality of life. Self-efficacy, social support received from family members, trust of physicians, and the health care system are key factors promoting healthy lifestyle and quality of life. The results indicate the need for further interdisciplinary, indigenous and cultural psychological research.
There has been an impetus in the development of biocontrol agents (BCAs) with the removal of a number of chemical compounds in the market, especially in the European Union. This has been a major driver in the development of Integrated Pest Management systems (IPM) for both pest and disease control. For control of mycotoxigenic fungi, there is interest in both control of colonization and more importantly toxin contamination of staple food commodities. Thus the relative inoculum potential of biocontrol agent vs the toxigenic specie sis important. The major bottlenecks in the production and development of formulations of biocontrol agents are the resilience of the strains, inoculum quality and formulation with effective field efficacy. It was recently been shown for mycotoxigenic fungi such as Aspergillus flavus, under extreme climate change conditions, growth is not affected although there may be a stimulation of aflatoxin production. Thus, the development of resilient biocontrol strains which can may have conserved control efficacy but have the necessary resilience becomes critical form a food security point of view. Indeed, under predicted climate change scenarios the diversity of pests and fungal diseases are expected to have profound impacts on food security. Thus, when examining the identification of potential biocontrol strains, production and formulation it is critical that the resilience to CC environmental factors are included and quantified. The problems in relation to the physiological competence and the relative humidity range over which efficacy can occur, especially pre-harvest may be increase under climate change conditions. We have examined the efficacy of atoxigenic strains of A. flavus and Clanostachys rosea and other candidates for control of A. flavus and aflatoxin contamination of maize, and for Fusarium verticillioides and fumonisin toxin control. We have also examined the potential use of fluidized-bed drying, nanoparticles/nanospheres and encapsulation approaches to enhance the potential for the production of resilient biocontrol formulations. The objective being the delivery of biocontrol efficacy under extreme interacting climatic conditions. The potential impact of climate change factors on the efficacy of biocontrol of fungal diseases and mycotoxins are discussed.

To compare the medical efficacy of original Socheongyong-tang with fermented Socheongyong-tang, we've studied the two medicines according to the search for optimal bacteria and optimal conditions, component analysis, assessment of medical efficacy and toxicity, and have the result below. The results were obtained as follows: Considering bacterial growth, $CO_2$ gas emission and pH, we examined that using 3 kinds of bacteria(S. cerevisiae KCTC 7913, L. casei KCTC 3109, L. brevis KCTC 3102) is desirable. There is no main difference in optimum conditions between incubator and shaking incubator. And it is considered that ideal fermentation time is 2 days after vaccination. As the result of componential analysis of before and after fermentation, there's a noticeable decrease of total sugar and protein. But there's no alterations in total phenolics compounds and in total flavonoid compounds that influence on medical effect. The result was interpreted that it can promote the assimilation of herbal decoction after fermentation. As the result of medical efficacy assessment, we can check out that there is more anti-oxidating effects in fermented Socheongyong-tang, whereas anti-inflammatory effects and obesity-preventing effects were favorable in original Socheongyong-tang. And there is no main difference of whitening and COX-2 removing effects between before and after the fermentation. As a result of assessing weight change, hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, we can not notice any unusual difference between before and after the fermentation. According to the results above, it is considered that we checked out the optimal bacteria and optimal conditions, advantages and disadvantages of the medical efficacy of original Socheongyong-tang and fermented Socheongyong-tang. And we suggest that there will have to be a following in-depth and systematic research on this subject in the future.
Nitric oxide (NO) is a small diffusible molecule which plays an important role in various physiological activities. NO is a notable molecule, functioning as a cytotoxic agent and cellular messenger. There has been considerable interest in NO production by activated macrophages because this gaseous metabolite plays a fundamental role in the cytotoxic and cytostatic effects of macrophages towards invasive micro-organisms and tumour cells. No is a bioactive free radical that has been implicated in many physiological functions, plays a critical role during inflammation and therefore constitutes a potential target for developing therapeutics for inflammatory diseases. The use of medicinal plants by the population has been an important alternative the resource in the treatment of various diseases. Its growing acceptance in the medical community has been due to the fact that several plants with biological activities have been scientifically investigated and their efficacy and safety have been proven. A new health paradigm may be evolving that would place emphasis on the positive aspects of diet, identifying components that are physiologically active and that contribute to the prevention of disease onset. It has been increasingly difficult to evaluate the impact of new bioactive materials and food products on the well being of society. Thus, testing systems for both health function and toxicity have become very elaborate, complex, and interrelated, making their interpretation difficult and open to controversy. To select the proper starting materials, to screen the appropriate health functionality and to determine the efficacy of product, a reliable, reproducible, sensitive and predictive assay is required. Particularly, in uitro assay is the first stage in preclinical test on physiologically active materials and have many advantages in terms of time, cost and convenience. However, several factors as well as some limitations should be considered in this assay system. This presentation, therefore, will address the use of in uitro assays for evaluating physiological functionality of foods coupled with general consideration.
Purpose: The purpose of this study were to examine the incidence of lymphedema and to compare to physiological and psychosocial symptoms between breast cancer patients with lymphedema and without lymphedema. Method: Four hundreds fifty women with breast cancer receiving mastectomy were recruited from two out-patient breast clinics of A and S university hospitals in Seoul, Korea from October, 2004 to May, 2005. Lymphedema was defined by circumferential measurement. Differences greater than 2cm between the affected arm and normal arm were considered to be lymphedema. A descriptive design was used for this study and data was collected using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent t-test. Results: Lymphedema developed in 112(24.9%) of the 450 subjects. Subjects with lymphedema reported more severe sensation change of arm and more depression and confusion than subjects without lymphedema. Range of motion of shoulder as a physical indicator and social support, however, were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: Lymphedema is recognized as an unpleasant and uncomfortable consequence of breast cancer-related treatment. Therefore, more research is needed to evaluate the impact of lymphedema on quality of life in patients with lymphedema and the efficacy of nursing intervention.
Purpose: This study aims to conduct a systematic review of the physical, psychosocial and physiological effects of Tai Chi exercise in elderly. Method: 37 articles from Medline search of foreign journals (1966-2006) were surveyed by the key words 'Tai Chi', 'Tai-chi program' and 'Tai-chi and elderly' limiting the range to age 65 or older, choosing clinical trial and randomized controlled trial research in English articles. Four articles were excluded due to methodological study, pilot study and review. The research was analyzed according to health status of the subjects, styles and forms of Tai Chi exercises, factors for physical, psychosocial and physiological measures. Result: A short forming Yang style was commonly used in chronic diseases and health for elderly. Variable outcome measures were used in Tai Chi studies relating to balance, muscle strength, walking and mobility, flexibility and cardiorespiratory function in physical measure, quality of life, depression, self-efficacy, health status, cognition and impact questionnaire in psychosocial measure, lipids, insulin resistance and hormone in physiological measure. Conclusion: Tai Chi exercise appears to have physical and psychosocial benefits and also appears to be safe for elderly and chronic diseases. It is suggested that future studies analyze statistical part of systematic reviews through meta analysis.
This study investigated science self-efficacy, sources of science self-efficacy, and creative personality by grade and gender. For this study, 495 $3^{rd}-6^{th}$ elementary students were participated. The findings showed that there was no significant difference by grade and gender in science self-efficacy. In sources of science self-efficacy, there was significant differences by gender, but not by grade. $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ graders' scores about 'vicarious experiences' and 'physiological and affective states' were higher than the those of $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ graders. Among creative personality, $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ graders' scores about 'motivation' and 'challenge' were higher than those of $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ graders. Comparing the scores among sources of science self-efficacy, the mean scores of 'social persuasion' were relatively low than other sources. This showed that praises and encouragement of teacher, parents and friends had not been sufficient. In terms of variables' influences on science self-efficacy, multiple regression results showed that 'mastery experiences' in sources of science self-efficacy had the most explanatory power and 'social persuasion' had the second explanatory power. 'Patience' in creative personality showed the third explanatory power. The variables' influences on science self-efficacy showed differences by grade and gender.
It has been well known that mushroom polysaccharide extracts have superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities. So we studied the efficacy and anti-oxidative effect of mushroom(Auricularia auricula U.) in rats treated with water and ethanol extracts of Auricularia auricula U after inducing dryness of skin by the application of detergent. The results of the research for of the efficacy and anti-oxidative effect Auricularia auricula U. are as follows thats. Weight gain and feed intake in animals treated with water extracts and ethanol extracts are significantly higher(p<0.05) than animal treated with detergent. Animals treated with water extracts of Auricularia auricula U. compared to animals treated with ethanol extracts have the higher HDL-cholesterol levels in the blood and the lower LDL-cholesterol levels in the blood. SOD-like activity of the ethanol extracts of Auricularia auricula U. was $27.39{\pm}1.61%$ at 2000ppm.
