  • Physics image and interest are factors that influence physics learning. Freshmen enter an engineering college under various learning conditions when they were in high school. Understanding physics image and interest according to characteristics of freshmen will help college physics education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the physics image and interest of freshmen in an engineering college according to their gender and physics course completion in high school and discuss the educational implications of college students on physics learning. The subjects of the study are 664 first grade students in engineering college. We analyzed physics image and interest of students according to gender and physics course completion in high school. Physics image is analyzed using semantic analysis. As a result of the analysis, the physics image is different according to the physics course completion. Interest in Physics depends on gender and physics course completion. Finally, we discuss the educational implications of college physics learning for engineering students.

  • In this paper, current research papers on Physics Problem Solving were analyzed according to the types of research purpose, method, subject and content of Physics, by using 3 Proceedings and 4 kinds of Journal, that is, the International Workshop(1983, Paris, France) and Conference (1983, Utrecht, The Netherlands) and Seminar(1987, Cornell University, U. S. A.) on Physics Education, and Journal of Research in Science Teaching (1984-1990) and Science Education (1986-1990). and Inter national Journal of Science Education(l987-1988) and Cognitive Science(1989-1990). There were 98 research papers on Problem Solving and among them 37 papers on Physics Problem Solving were selected for analyzing. The results of analysis are as follows; 1) The studies on Model of Novice Student were 22(59%), And those on Model of Desired Preformance, on Model of learning and on Model of Teaching were all much the same. 2) The theoretical studies were 10(27%), and the experimental ones 27(73%). Among the experimental studies, there were 16(59%) by using the written test, and 7(26%) by using the thinking aloud method. 3) The studies about university students as subjects were 20(54%). Probably, it seems the reason that most of researchers on Physics Problem Solving were professors of university or graduate students. 4) Among the various fields of Physics, the studies on Mechanics were 24(63%) and those on E1ectromagnetics 6(16%). or graduate students.

  • General Physics CAI Program was developed for university science and engineering student. The program was restricted in the field of mechanics and was mainly aimed for individual tutorial. This project was supported by Government. Department of Education, physics attending their general physics classes in university. The program was written in BASIC and constructed by frame, 4 professors and 6 graduate students were involved in the project. Summary of this study is as follows. 1. The theory of CAI was illuminated from a new point of view to enhance usefullness of CAI. Also the structure of frame type CAI was studied. 2. The program was developed as follows 1) The program consisted of main program, pretest routine, tutorial routine, final test routine, and several other routines for program control. Whole program was written in BASIC. 2) 20 problems for pretest, 90 problems and subsequent hints and solutions for tutorial, 20 problems for final test were developed. 3) According to student's pretest result, tutorial course was routed through several different courses which contain different number of problems 4) The expected rate of achievment for final test was set to 75%. 5) Data of students response to problems including number of tries and time used were recorded for the purpose of achievment analisys 3. 22 students went through whole course and the results were as follows. 1) Pretest marks were widly distributed from 20 points to 100. It means that achievement of high school physics course were not enough. 2) Throughout tutorial course, students who had got higher mark in pretest answered correctly in the first trial at a higher rate of 78 %. Overall rate of correct answer in the second trial was distributed appropriatly. 3) Average mark of final test was 78.8 points, rather a higher rate of achievement than expected. This means that the program was constructed well.

  • We report experimental behaviors of condensed $^{87}Rb$ atoms responding to changes in the trap potential of the atomchip. The two-types of adiabatic and non-adiabatic overall changes were implemented by changing the ramp-down speed of the chip-wire current, which can dominantly modify the one-axis magnetic field gradient. Under the adiabatic process, a pure condensate stayed in the initial spin state and collectively oscillated with both monopole and dipole modes, while an atomic cloud above the critical temperature exhibited sound waves in a dense ultracold gas. On the other hand, Bose-Einstein condensate atoms with non-adiabatic perturbation were split into spatially different positions by spin states through spin-flip. We investigated the split ratio among spin states depending on final evaporation frequency. Potential changes, of course, cause collective oscillations regardless of the changing process.

  • When an electron is transferred to $C_{60}$, the bond structure is distorted due to the electron-lattice interaction and a polaron-like state is formed. The evolution process of the bond distortion is studied by the dynamical equation of atomic lattice, and time-dependent changes of the bond lengths are determined. Then it can be estimated that the relaxation time to form the polaron-like state is a fraction of a picosecond.

  • We investigate how the frequency and the Fourier amplitude of the pulse wave behave as the contact pressure of the sensor on the skin increases. The results are that the fundamental frequency of the pulse wave hardly changes and the Fourier amplitude has several different patterns depending on the personal constitution, and its patterns are classified. We also show that the classified patterns can be related to the different pulse types by the magnitude of the pressure required to reach the maximum Fourier amplitude and the range of the pressure at which the maximum Fourier amplitude is maintained.

  • We have studied the effects of incoherent pumping on EIA at the transition between the $F_g=2$ ground state and the $F_e=3$ excited state in $^{85}Rb\;D_1$-line. Generally, the studies about EIA have been done in the cycling transition, where the population has no loss to other states. In the case of EIA by using the $^{85}Rb\;D_1$ transition line, the population is transferred to the other hyperfine state due to optical pumping. We incoherently pumped the atoms from $F_g=3\;to\;F_g=2$ with the pumping beam, which is resonant at the transition from $F_g=3\;to\;F_g=2$. We were able to observe the effects of incoherent pumping depending on the power and the polarization of the pumping beam.
