  • The Korean government has purchased land properties alongside any significant water bodies before setting up the buffers to secure water qualities. Since the annual budgets are limited, however, there has always been the issue of which land parcels ought to be given the priority. Therefore, this study aims to develop efficient mechanism for land acquisition priorities in stream corridors that would ultimately be vegetated for riparian buffer zones. The criteria of land acquisition priority were driven through literary review along with experts' advice. The relative weights of their value and priorities for each criterion were computed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP) method. Major findings of the study are as follows: 1. The decision-making structural model for land acquisition priority focuses mainly on the reduction of non-point source pollutants(NSPs). This fact is highly associated with natural and physical conditions and land use types of surrounding areas. The criteria were classified into two categories-NSPs runoff areas and potential NSPs runoff areas. 2. Land acquisition priority weights derived for NSPs runoff areas and potential NSPs runoff areas were 0.862 and 0.138, respectively. This implicates that much higher priority should be given to the land parcels with NSPs runoff areas. 3. Weights and priorities of sub-criteria suggested from this study include: proximity to the streams(0.460), land cover(0.189), soil permeability(0.117), topographical slope(0.096), proximity to the roads(0.058), land-use types(0.036), visibility to the streams(0.032), and the land price(0.012). This order of importance suggests, as one can expect, that it is better to purchase land parcels that are adjacent to the streams. 4. A standard scoring system including the criteria and weights for land acquisition priority was developed which would likely to allow expedited decision making and easy quantification for priority evaluation due to the utilization of measurable spatial data. Further studies focusing on both point and non-point pollutants and GIS-based spatial analysis and mapping of land acquisition priority are needed.

  • The objective of the study was to examine the distinct qualities of Dasik containing added silkworm powder. In order to discern the differences in characteristics among samples the silkworm powder was added as at ratios of (0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%), respectively. Measurements for moisture, chromaticity and mechanical and physical properties were performed, in addition to sensory evaluations. The results were as follows. The moisture contents of the Dasik samples changed as the added silkworm powder content increased. A lower L-value resulted as the amount of silkworm powder increased (p<0.05), the a and b values also showed decreasing tendencies. In the texture analysis, hardness increased as the amount of added silkworm powder increased from 0% to 40% (p<0.05). Adhesiveness was highest in the 40% silkworm powder group, and the 30% and 20% groups had the highest springiness values respectively (p<0.05). In terms of sensory quality overall surface color, texture and taste were perceived as superior for the 30% and 20% add silkworm powder groups gumminess was lowest for the 0% group (p<0.05), and overall quality was lowest for the 40% added silkworm powder group. Consequently, there was greater preference for the samples containing less than 40% added silkworm powder, and the 30% treatment had the best overall quality.

  • In order to study the effects of blanching and germination of soybean on the quality of soymilk, the soybeans were differently treated as follow; (1) blanched for 5 min at $100^{\circ}C$, (2) germinated for 2 days at $25^{\circ}C$, (3) germinated for 2 days and then blanched for 5 min at $100^{\circ}C$. The qualities of various soymilks prepared from the treated soybeans were compared with those of soymilk from the untreated soybeans. Blanching of soybeans decreased yields, solid materials, viscosity, total protein, soluble nitrogen, and total sugar of soymilk but no effect on its free sugar contents, specific gravity, and pH. The blanching, however, improved the sensory properties and decreased the n-hexanal contents of soymilk to about 1/2.4. Germination of soybeans improved the yields, physical, chemical, and sensory properties and decreased the n-hexanal contents of soymilk to about 1/5. The germination plus blanching of soybeans showed kind of combined effects of germination's and of blanching's, resulting in the decrease of n-hexanal to about 1/10 and improvement in sensory properties of soymilk.

  • Rice cultivars of Goami2 (G2), Baegjinju (BJJ), and Sulgaeng (SG) with different amylose contents were developed by mutation breeding via N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) treatment to Ilpumbyeo (IP), high japonica rice. They were identified by different appearances such as grain size, color, and shape. In this experiment, the compositional and physical qualities of those cultivars were examined. The G2 rice classified as a high-amylose rice cultivar was significantly higher in its non-digestable carbohydrates contents. Linoleic and oleic acid were composed of 70~75% of all fatty acids composition regardless of milled and brown rice, except G2 rice in which palmitic acid was the major fatty acid followed by linoleic acid and oleic acid in order. Major amino acids were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and hydroxy lysine. It was found that cysteine contents were higher in the cultivars of endosperm mutant rice. The DSC analysis revealed that enthalpy was the highest in BJJ followed by SG, IP, and G2 rice. The lowest enthalpy of G2 might be attributable to the higher amylose content. Ilpumbyeo in its cooked rice form showed the highest in Toyo value and less in hardness, but G2 was vise versa. Results of gelatinization and cooked rice properties suggest that G2 was less suitable for cooked rice, but has a potential for functional ingredients from nutritional point of view. The BJJ and SG could be used for traditional cooking as well as for processed foods.

  • In a trial involving 72 pigs, the effects of market weight and gender on the carcass and pork quality characteristics were investigated. A total of 72 pigs were divided into 3 groups(95-104, 105-110 or 111-120kg), market weight was assigned to 2 gender group (gilt or boar). The carcass characteristics (carcass weight, backfat thickness or grades) were determined on those carcass, longissimus muscle was removed from each left side at 5th to 13th rib and meat qualities were evaluated. The carcass weight and backfat thickness of pigs slaughtered at 111-120kg were increases than the other weights. The carcass grade of pigs slaughtered at 105-110kg had higher then at pigs slaughtered 94-104kg. Compared with boars, gilts carcass had higher in carcass weight and backfat fat. The pH$\_$u/, drip loss and cooking loss tended to similar for market weight and gender, meat of boars had higher shear force values than gilts (p<0.05). The meat color tended to similar for market weight and gender. The total myoglobin content of gilts slaughtered at 95-104kg and boars slaughtered at 111-120kg had higher than the other weight and gender. The meat of gilts had higher springiness and brittleness than boars (p<0.05). These results imply that the carcass characteristics (carcass weight and backfat thickness) could be affected by market weight and gender, meat of gilts was improved the shear force values and texture properties when compared to boars.

  • For gas hydrate exploration, long offset multichannel seismic data acquired using by the 4km streamer length in Ulleung basin of the East Sea. The dataset was processed to define the BSRs (Bottom Simulating Reflectors) and to estimate the amount of gas hydrates. Confirmation of the presence of Bottom Simulating reflectors (BSR) and investigation of its physical properties from seismic section are important for gas hydrate detection. Specially, faster interval velocity overlying slower interval velocity indicates the likely presences of gas hydrate above BSR and free gas underneath BSR. In consequence, estimation of correct interval velocities and analysis of their spatial variations are critical processes for gas hydrate detection using seismic reflection data. Using Dix's equation, Root Mean Square (RMS) velocities can be converted into interval velocities. However, it is not a proper way to investigate interval velocities above and below BSR considering the fact that RMS velocities have poor resolution and correctness and the assumption that interval velocities increase along the depth. Therefore, we incorporated Migration Velocity Analysis (MVA) software produced by Landmark CO. to estimate correct interval velocities in detail. MVA is a process to yield velocities of sediments between layers using Common Mid Point (CMP) gathered seismic data. The CMP gathered data for MVA should be produced after basic processing steps to enhance the signal to noise ratio of the first reflections. Prestack depth migrated section is produced using interval velocities and interval velocities are key parameters governing qualities of prestack depth migration section. Correctness of interval velocities can be examined by the presence of Residual Move Out (RMO) on CMP gathered data. If there is no RMO, peaks of primary reflection events are flat in horizontal direction for all offsets of Common Reflection Point (CRP) gathers and it proves that prestack depth migration is done with correct velocity field. Used method in this study, Tomographic inversion needs two initial input data. One is the dataset obtained from the results of preprocessing by removing multiples and noise and stacked partially. The other is the depth domain velocity model build by smoothing and editing the interval velocity converted from RMS velocity. After the three times iteration of tomography inversion, Optimum interval velocity field can be fixed. The conclusion of this study as follow, the final Interval velocity around the BSR decreased to 1400 m/s from 2500 m/s abruptly. BSR is showed about 200m depth under the seabottom

  • In lower abdominal MRI scan, patients have been tested by physically contacting with the body array coil. In this study, we have designed the acrylic assistant equipment (ACR) which allows the contactless scan of the patient to the coil and evaluated the feasibility by comparing the acquired images with ACR to those obtained without ACR. We tested 10 cases (F: 5, m: 5) by using the Ingenia $3.0T^{TM}$ MR system and dStreamTM torso coil (Philips Healthcare, Netherlands). We implemented T1 AX TSE and eTHRIVE (GRE) techniques. The scanned images were quantitatively and qualitatively assessed. In qualitatively, the TSE shows 4.44 and 4.56 mean values with and without the ACR and 4.34 and 4.28 at the GRE, respectively. In quantitatively, the TSE shows 12.15 CNR, 17.95 SNR and 12.71 CNR, 18.96 SNR with and without the ACR. And GRE shows 17.72 CNR, 22.59 SNR and 18.26 CNR, 24.47 SNR with and without the ACR, respectively. We have designed and implemented the acrylic assistant equipment to lower abdominal patients. Our data indicate that it is possible to obtain similar image qualities to current lower abdominal MRI scan without the physical contact to the patient.

  • In order to understand distribution characteristics and pollution of heavy metals in the artificial Lake Shihwa in the vicinity of Kyunggi Bay in relation with huge environmental changes, various environmental samples including seawaters, surface sediments and settling particulate matters were collected from Lake Shihwa in 2004. Due to extreme pollutant discharge from various anthropogenic sources such as the Banweol and Shihwa Industrial Complexes and cities, the highest metal concentrations in the samples such as waters, sediments and settling particulate matter were found in inner part of the lake. High metal contents (Cu, Zn and Hg) in sediments were observed at Sts. 2-4 and 9. The contents of Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb in SPMs were high at St. 5 and low in the outer part of the lake. Spatial distribution of heavy metals were mainly controlled various biogeochemical factors and physical mixing as well as input of industrial and municipal wastewaters. Although tile environmental qualities of heavy metals in the lake have been improved partially due to inflow of outer seawater, it is not clear to reach a good environmental quality. Therefore, further environmental programs should be conducted continuously for environmental improvement.

  • Quality evaluation of fish muscle was conducted in olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus fed with control or experimental diet containing 0.3% of Obosan (Sungam Co., Korea). Sensory panel members preferred the experimental fish were more preferable than those of control (P<0.01 or 0.05). The difference test was shown that the experimental fish muscle is more firm elastic and palatable than the control ones (P<0.01 or 0.05). The physical properties of meats from fish fed a diet containing Obosan improved qualities with compared to those of control meats. The total amount of free amino acids in muscles from control fish (31.7 mg/100mg), especially with the significant increase of glutamic acid, proline, glycine, alanine and methionine. In all nucleotides and their related compounds, ATP was the most abundant in muscles from fish fed a diet containing Obosan (about 1.9 fold compared to mean of control), however, IMP was more abundant in control muscles.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of muffin made with tagatose which substituted sugar. Moisture contents were measured and Texture Profile Analysis was carried out during 3 day storage. 3 types of muffin, T0 (no tagatose added, sugar was the only sweet taste source), T25 (tagatose : sugar = 25:75(w/w), and T50 (tagatose : sugar = 50:50(w/w) were prepared. As the tagatose contents increased, the Maillard reaction proceeded more, so the color of the muffin crust was darker. Moisture contents of muffins decreased during storage, up to 2 days of storage, moisture contents of T25 and T50 were higher significantly, but at the 3rd day of storage, no differences were detected among samples. In the texture profile analysis, hardness, chewiness and fracturability were higher as the tagatose contents increased. Springiness and cohesiveness did not show any differences between T0 and T25 significantly. In the sensory evaluation, T0 got the lower points on the crust color value, but the crust colors were not significantly different among samples. Other characteristics like crumb color, moistness, sweetness, flavor and overall acceptance were not different significantly. As a result, when synbiotic and low-calorie tagatose was partly added to muffin up to 50 % as sugar substitute, overall qualities of those muffins were not different with only sugar added ones, even moisture contents were higher but color was a little bit darker, so tagatose can be used on making healthy muffins successfully.
