Improvement of Physical and Drying Properties of Large Diameter and Long Axis Moso Bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) Poles Using Heat Treatment

  • This study aimed to convert underutilized moso bamboo into high-value added products such as fences, interior materials, lighting fixtures, and accessories. Green moso bamboo poles with a diameter of approximately 10 cm and a length of approximately 3.7 m were heat treated at 140℃ using a large-scale kiln. The processing time was meticulously adjusted through various stages, including pretreatment (6-8 hours at 60℃), cooking (8-10 hours at 100℃), steaming (26-30 hours at 120℃), heating (4-6 hours at 140℃), and finally, cooling (below 80℃). A meticulously designed heat treatment process has enabled efficient mass production of moso bamboo poles with improved qualities, including minimal splitting, moisture levels below 3%, and a specific gravity of 1.05. The focus of this study was to present the physical and drying properties, such as color, dimensional change, specific gravity, moisture content, and splitting, observed during the heat treatment process.

  • In this study, the Atterberg limit and grain-size analysis were carried for the purpose of investigating the influence on drying and organic matter of Ulsan marine deposited clay. The results revealed that Atterberg limit was decreased and grain-size distribution was variable on drying. The presence of organic matter also influenced on the physical properties of the soils. The physical properties of marine deposited clay were variable on drying, so that we recommended grain-size analysis and Atterberg limit test were performed under the wet condition of the soils after sampling.

실 단면 형상과 니트 구조 인자가 흡한속건 소재의 수분이동 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Yarns Cross-Sections and Structure Parameters of Its Knitted Fabrics to Moisture Transport of Perspiration Absorption and Fast Dry Fabrics)

  • This study examined the water absorption and drying properties of the thirteen types of the knitted fabrics for sports wear. These physical properties were analysed with relation to the constituent fiber cross-sectional shape and structure parameters of the knitted fabrics by regression analysis. Absorption and drying properties of the knitted fabric specimens were increased with increasing the porosity of the constituent yarns, which was attributed to the capillary channels in the yarns. The water absorption and drying properties were increased and decreased with increasing tightness factor and stitch density of the knitted fabric. The absorption property of the knitted fabric for perspiration absorption and fast dry sport-wear clothing was mostly influenced mostly by fiber cross-sectional shape and its characteristics, whereas, drying property was dependent on the structural parameters of the knitted fabric such as tightness factor and stitch density. Therefore, superior perspiration absorption and fast drying knitted fabric could be obtained in the fabric structure with optimum tightness factor and stitch density, and constituent yarn structure with non-circular fiber crosssection and high porosity. GATS method and MMT method are used to measure sweating fast drying properties and it is necessary to carry out studies using these measurement methods in order to compare with the results of this study.

온풍건조 조건에 따른 증절간 고구마의 물리적 특성과 기호도 (Physical Properties and Preference of a Steamed Sweet Potato Slab after Mild Hot Air Drying)

  • Two kinds of steamed sweet potatoes were dried with mild hot air to improve quality, convenience and preference as a snack. Steamed sweet potatoes were dried at temperatures ranging from 35 to $65^{\circ}C$ for 12 hr, and moisture contents, colors, texture, and taste were evaluated. The lowest moisture content was 0.25% at $65^{\circ}C$. Color values (L, a, b and ${\Delta}E$) decreased with increasing drying temperature and drying time in both chestnut-sweet potatoes and pumpkin-sweet potatoes. Reducing sugars and soluble solids increased quickly at high drying temperatures. The highest hardness value for chestnut-sweet potatoes was $26.31\;kg_f /cm^2$when they were dried at $65^{\circ}C$ for 12 hrs. Springiness and cohesiveness were higher than those in chestnut-sweet potatoes. The highest taste score was for a dried chestnut-sweet potatoes at $55^{\circ}C$ for 6 hr and a dried pumpkin-sweet potatoes at 45 or $55^{\circ}C$ for 6 hr.

  • In Condebelt press drying system, the temperature difference between top and bottom plate of Condebelt transfers water to bottom side, Fine fibers, stickies , ink , and various inorganic materials are also migrated to the fine wire located at the bottom plate by highly pressurized moisture flow. As a result, the fine wire contaminated by plugging of these fine and sticky materials can cause many problems such as blistering or partial crushing of paper. The contaimination of fine wire leads to a deterioroated strength together with uneven physical properties of paper. In this paper, froth-flotatiion method, which is commonly used in the field of ONP recycling process, were adopted to separate the contaminants in KOCC as a new fiber fractionation method. Standard deviation of paper strength and brighteness decreased of Condebelt fine wire were measured to investigate the effect of contaminants removal . The standard deviations of paper strength obtained from the flotated accept were not dependent on the number of condebelt press drying . However, in the case of untreated KOCC, the standard deviations were increased as press drying repeated. This indicates that the contaminant gives uneven physical properties to the paper by wire plugging . Optical and SEM images clearly illustrate the effect of contaminants on the wire condition.

Water Absorption and Dimensional Stability of Heat-treated Fast-growing Hardwoods

  • A common problem with fast-growing hardwoods is dimensional instability that limits use of their wood. In this study, we investigated the effects of pre-drying methods, temperatures, and heating duration on the specific gravity, water absorption, and dimensional stability of three tropical fast-growing hardwoods, jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba Roxb.), sengon (Falcataria moluccana Miq.), and mangium (Acacia mangium Willd.). Wood samples were pre-dried by two methods (fan and oven at $40^{\circ}C$), and heat treatments were performed at three temperatures (120, 150, and $180^{\circ}C$) for two different time periods (2 and 6 hours). The specific gravity, water absorption, dimensional stability, and structural changes of the samples were evaluated. The results revealed that heat treatments slightly reduced the specific gravity of all three wood species. In addition, the heat treatments reduced water absorption and significantly improved dimensional stability of the samples. Oven pre-drying followed by heat treatment at $180^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours resulted in good physical improvement of jabon and sengon wood. Fan pre-drying followed by heat treatment at $180^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours improved the physical properties of mangium wood. The heat treatment shows a promising technique for improving the physical characteristic of fast growing hardwoods.

건조방법에 따른 마의 품질특성 (Quality Properties of Korean Yam by Various Drying Methods)

  • 본 연구에서는 생마의 적정 건조방법을 알아 보고자 동결건조, 냉풍건조 및 열풍건조 방법으로 마를 건조시 각 건조 방법의 최적 조건을 조사하고, 3가지 건조 방법에 따른 마의 식품학적 품질 특성을 비교 평가하여 최적 건조방법을 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 동결건조시 $40^{\circ}C$ 이하로 가열하면서 건조 시키면 건조후 마고유의 색, 향, 맛과 점질성이 생마와 거의 같은 수준으로 유지되었다. 열풍건조나 냉풍건조의 경우 건조후 마의 색이 연한 백색이나 미색을 나타내지 않고 갈변되었다. 향이나 맛의 경우 냉풍건조시는 마 고유의 향이나 맛이 감소되었으며 열풍건조에서는 마 고유의 향이나 맛이 감소되었을 뿐 만 아니라 가열취나 구수한 맛도 나타났다. $40^{\circ}C$ 동결건조 마는 생마와 유사한 0.0160 Pa.s의 겉보기 점도를 나타내었으나 열풍건조와 냉풍건조는 생마의 반 이하 수준으로 점도가 감소하여 점질성을 거의 나타내지 않았다. 결론적으로 생마의 식품학적 주요 특성인 점질성, 색, 마 고유의 향과 맛을 유지하며 분산성과 용해성을 높이는 건조 방법으로는 동결건조가 가장 좋은 것으로 평가되었으며, 분말화시 분말의 용도에 적합한 용해성 및 분산성 같은 물성이 높게 나타나는 적정 입자 크기는 $40{\sim}60{\;}mesh$ 사이인 것으로 나타났다.

전처리 농축 정도에 따른 Aloe Vera gel의 동결건조분말의 물성 (Physical Properties of Freeze-Dried Powder of Aloe Vera Gel with Respect to the Concentrating Degree as Pre-Treatment)

  • 농축시킨 Aloe vera gel을 동결건조하였을 때 그 농축도 차이에 의한 최종 건조분말의 물성 변화를 비교분석하였다. 분말의 최종 수분함량은 거의 차이가 없었으며. 점성 측정에서는 높은 농축 조건의 경우 전형적인 shear thinning 현상과 non-Newtonian 유체의 속성을 나타냈다. 이에 비하여 낮은 농축 조건의 경우 Newtonian 액체의 성질과 고형분이 입자가 아닌 풀린 형태로 존재할 때 나타나는 현상을 보였다. 분말이 물에 용해되는 동안 전기전도도의 변화를 실시간으로 측정한 결과 평형상태에 도달하였을 때, 가장 높은 농축 조건에서 전기전도도가 가장 낮게 나타나, 비전해질성 물질의 용해도가 가장 큰 것으로 해석되었다. 분말의 등온흡습성에서는 농축이 증가할수록 수분 흡착과 결합수의 양이 작아지는 것으로 분석되었다. 결과적으로 Aloe vera gel을 농축하여 동결건조할 때는 그 농축도에 따라 점성, 현탁시 전기전도도에 따른 용해성, 등온흡습성이 변하는 것으로 나타나, 특정 품질의 동결건조제품을 얻기 위해서는 그에 대한 농축의 최적화가 필요한 것으로 생각된다.

The Effects of Multiple Recycling on Deinkability, Optical and Physical Properties of Recycled Paper

  • This study examined the effects of multiple recycling on deinkability and properties of recycled paper from laser computer printout(LCPO). First, alkaline paper with a 20% printed area was disintegrated by TAPPI standard disintegrator. After dewatering , the pulp was followed by flotation, handsheet making, and drying at room temperature, in order. A sequence of printing , disintegrating, flotating , handsheet making and drying was one recycling cycle and this cyclic treatment was repeateed from zero to five times. The residual ink content in recycled handsheets by SEM-EDXA and Py-GC analyseswas increased slightly as recycling number increase. After five cycles of recycling the ISO brightness of recycled handsheets dropped to about 90% of the original brightness. However, it had a gain of 10% in opacity. The most of physical properties of recycled handsheets were decreased as recycling numbers increase except of for tear strength.

습윤 및 건조과정에서의 톱밥내 물리적 성상과 공기투과성의 변화 (Comparison of physical properties and air permeability in the sawdust during wetting and drying procedure)

  • 본 연구에서는 퇴비화에서 첨가제로 주로 사용하고 있는 톱밥을 대상으로 수분 혼합방식으로서의 습윤과정과 건조과정에서의 수분함량별 톱밥의 물리적 성상의 변화로 인한 공기투과성의 차이점을 파악하고자 하였다. 수분증가에 따라 겉보기밀도는 증가하며, 공기공극은 감소하였다. 그러나 습윤 및 건조과정에서 동일한 수분함량일지라도 습윤과정의 공기공극이 건조과정에 비하여 높게 나타나고 있어 습윤과정이 퇴비화 매체 내에서의 공기이동에 유리한 물리적 성상을 보이고 있다. 또한 수분이 증가함에 따라 톱밥 입자크기가 커지며, 수분함량 40%부터 60% 구간에서 습윤과정이 건조과정에 비하여 큰 입자를 형성하였다. 또한, 습윤과정에서는 수분이 증가함에 따라 공기공극이 작아짐에도 불구하고 수분함량 60% 정도에서 차감압력이 가장 낮아지고 이후 수분 포화상태에 도달하면 급격히 증가하고 있다. 건조과정에서는 습윤과정과는 다르게 포화상태에서부터 수분이 감소함에 따라 차감압력이 지속적으로 감소하는 경향을 보이고 있다. 퇴비화에서 주로 활용되는 건조기준 수분함량 0.67(습량기준 40%) 이상의 수분함량 구간에서 유입 공기유량이 동일할 경우 습윤과정이 건조과정에 비하여 차감압력이 낮아 공기투과성이 개선되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 동일한 수분함량에서의 차감압력은 유입 공기유량에 비례하여 증가하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 실험결과로서, 퇴비화공정에서 매체내의 공기이동성을 원활하게 하기 위하여는 습윤과정이 적절하며 수분함량 60% 정도가 최적의 운영조건이라 판단된다.
