Two diketones, 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione(PD) and 2,3-butanedione (BD) were investigated as new visible light photosensitizers for a dental resin composite of bis-GMA in order to improve photopolymerization effect. And the photopolymerization efficiency of mixed photosensitizers, PD-CQ and DA-CQ, was studied. Photopolymerization effect of photosensitizers were compared with that of camphorquinone(CQ), the most widely used photosensitizer. The photopolymerization efficiency of bis-GMA containing the photosensitizer increased with irradiation time. The increase was in the order: BD < CQ < PD. The photopolymerization efficiency of this mixture was not so efficient as CQ or PD.
Purpose: To perform a comparative study on curing shrinkage according to the thickness of photopolymerization resin. Methods: Stainless steel molds of 2, 4, and 6 mm heights were prepared. The 2, 4, and 6 mm-height molds were classified as the 2H, 4H, and 6H groups, respectively. A photopolymerization resin was injected into the stainless steel mold. Photopolymerization was carried out using a photopolymer machine. During photopolymerization, the wavelength and intensity of 400~405 nm were set to 10, the highest intensity among 1~10. Photopolymerization was performed for 30 min per specimen (each group=10). The inner and outer areas of the specimen were measured. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis H test (α=0.05). Results: In terms of the inner and outer diameters of the photopolymerization resin specimen, the 2H group contracted the most, whereas the 6H group contracted the least. A statistically significant difference was found between the groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The amount of light irradiation of the photopolymerization resin must be adjusted according to the thickness.

A new photochemically bifunctional epoxy and dimethacrylate compounds were synthesized for investigating the photosensitivity under UV irradiation. Photosensitivity of the synthesized chalcone-based compounds was investigated by using UV-visible absorption and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies. The result of spectroscopic analysis substantiated that the two chalcone-based compounds have functions of both photocrosslinking and photopolymerization by UV exposure in the presence of photoinitiator. Two kinds of photochemical reactions proceeded competitively during UV exposure. Particularly, we studied the effect of photopolymerization on the rate of photocrosslink due to cycloaddition in the two oligomeric compounds.
The photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA) with phenylsilane wasperformed. The molecular weights of the poly(MMA) containing SiH moieties were increased with augment of molar ratio of PhSiH3 over MMA by cross-linking via hydrosilation at the expense of isolated yield. Phenylsilane apparently influenced on the photopolymerization as a chain transfer agent and solvent.
Three t-amines, 4-(dimethylamino)benzoic acid (ABA), 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde (MBA), 4-(dimethylamino)benzophenone (MBP), were investigated as new visible light photoinitiators for a dental resin composite of UDMA in order to improve photopolymerization effect. Three t-amines mixed with three photosensiizers, CQ, PD and DA, respectively. And the photopolymerization effect of photoinitiators were compared with that of 4-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (AEM), the most widely used photoinitiator. The photopolymerization efficiency of UDMA containing the photoinitiator increased with irradiation time. The increase was in the order: MBP

The bulk photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with disilanes such as 1,2-diphenyldisilane and 2-phenyl-1,3-disilapropane was carried out to yield poly(MMA)s containing the corresponding disilyl moiety presumably as an end group. It was found that while the polymerization yields and the polymer molecular weights decreased as the relative disilane concentration increased, the TGA residue yields and the relative intensities of SiH IR stretching bands increased with increment of molar ratio of disilane over MMA. The photopolymerization of MMA with 2-phenyl-1,3-disilapropane produced higher-molecular-weight polymer with lower TGA residue yield when compared to the photopolymerization of MMA with 1,2-diphenyldisilane. The disilanes seemed to significantly influence on the photopolymerization as both chain initiation and chain transfer agents.

This miniaccount presents the selective examples of our recent discoveries in the photopolymerization of vinyl monomers using the organic initiators such as hydrosilanes, poly(hydroarylsilane)s, benzoin silyl ethers, and thianthrene cation radical. In the photopolymerization of vinyl monomers with silanes polysilanes, while the polymerization yields and polymer molecular weights of the poly(MMA)s containing the silyl moieties decreased, the TGA residue yields and intensities of SiH stretching IR bands increased as the mole ratio of the silanes over MMA increased. The hydroarylsilane and poly(hydroarylsilane) seemed to influence strongly on the photopolymerizaiton of olefinic monomers as both chain initiation and chain transfer agents. For the photohomopolymerization and photocopolymerization of MA and AA, the similar trends were observed. Benzoin silyl ethers and thianthrene cation radical also exhibit the photoinitiating ability in the photopolymerization of MMA.
Photopolymerization and phase separation behavior during the PDLC formation process were investigated by simultaneous resistivity and turbidity measurement. Using this experimental method, we investigated the effect of liquid crystal structure on photopolymerization and phase separation behavior.
The bulk photopolymerization of methacrylic acid (MA) with phenylsilane was performed to produce poly(MA)s containing phenylsilyl moiety presumably as an end group. It was found that while the polymerization yields and intrinsic viscosities decreased, the TGA residue yields and the relative intensities of SiH IR stretching bands increased with increasing molar ratio of phenylsilane over MA. The phenylsilane seemed to significantly influence on the photopolymerization as both chain initiation and chain transfer agents.
The bulk thermal and photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA) with phenylsilane were performed to produce poly(MMA)s containing phenylsilyl moiety presumably as an end group. It was found for both thermal and photopolymerization that while the polymerization yields and polymer molecular weights decreased as the relative phenylsilane concentration increases, the TGA residue yields and the relative intensities of SiH IR stretching bands increased with increasing molar ratio of phenylsilane over MMA. The polymerization yield, molecular weight, and TGA residue yield for the thermal polymerization were higher than those for the photopolymerization. Thus, the phenylsilane seemed to significantly influence on the polymerization as both chain initiation and chain transfer agents. However, an appreciable silane effect was not observed on the thermal and photopolymerization of 4-vinylpyridine, acrylonitrile, styrene, and vinyltrimethoxysilane.
