The picosecond time resolved fluorescence spectra of Hematoporphyrin Derivative (HPD) in both solutions and cancer cell are measured by a time correlated single photon counting system with a synchronously mode locked dye laser. Two exoponential decay components in the fluorescence spectra were observed. The slow decay(6.3 ㎱)and the fast one(350 ㎰)are attributed to be originated from monomers and dimers, respectively. The absorption and fluorescence measurements in steady state also showed the presence of a monomeric and dimeric forms of HPD molecules. The monomer lifetime in the cancer cell was measured to be longer than that in solution, which was expected from the blue shift and narrowing of the absorption spectra for HPD-treated in vitro. The relative amplitude of the fast component was found to be enhanced in cancer cell, strongly indicating the higher affinity of the dimer for the cancer cell.
The photocount distribution from a quasi-thermal light source, a moving ground glass disk (surface roughness; 9 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) illuminated by a well-stabilized He-Ne laser, is measured by a photon counting system, and analyzed with theoretical calculations. The distribution approaches the Poisson distribution for the long coherence time ${\tau}_c$ compared to the measuring time T. The coherence time ${\tau}_c$ of the quasi-thermal source can be changed by controlling the velocity v of the motor driving the glass disk. By the comparison of experimental results and theory for the condition of T/ ${\tau}_c$ >>1, the coherence time ${\tau}_c$ of the quasi-thermal source is turned out to be in the range of 31.43 $mutextrm{s}$~2.48 $mutextrm{s}$ according to the circumferential velocity of the disk, and compared with the simple calculation of $\sigma$/v.

We developed a wireless gamma-ray probe based on radiation photon counting method to diagnose and detect remaining lesions after surgery, and its effectiveness was evaluated using calibration sources and a phantom. The probe was designed and miniaturized using a semi-conductor-based radiation sensor, and a Bluetooth remote communication module was used to implement the wireless diagnosis and detection system. Moreover, a remote monitoring system was implemented to monitor affected areas during diagnosis and surgery. To assess the effectiveness of the developed probe in this study, calibration sources $^{57}Co$, $^{133}Ba$, $^{22}Na$ and $^{137}Cs$ and a chicken breast phantom were used. Furthermore, the probe's detection response to gamma ray was confirmed through evaluation. Its clinical applicability was verified by assessing the response linearity and detection direction according to gamma-ray intensity, as well as the detection efficiency according to the depth of the gamma source in the phantom.
We have tested a combined CT/SPECT system with a single CZT detector for x-ray and gamma-ray medical imaging. The size of detector is 10$\times$10$\times$5 ㎣, and the anodes are pixellated as a 4$\times$4 array with a pixel dimension of $1.5\times$1.5 $\textrm{mm}^2$. The cathode was coated with a continuous Au-plated. We have characterized the system performance by scanning a radiographic resolution phantom and the Hoffman Brain phantom. Pulse counting electronics with very short shaping time (50 ㎱) are used to satisfy high photon rates in x-ray imaging, and response linearity up to 3$\times$10$^{5}$ counts per second per detector element is achieved. Energy resolution of 10.4% and 5.3% FWHM at Tc-99m 140 keV peak are obtained for the 50 ㎱ and 2 $mutextrm{s}$ shaping times, respectively. The spatial resolutions of CT and SPECT are about 1mm and 9mm, respectively. Photopeak efficiency of detector systems are 41.0% for 50㎱ and 72.5% for 2 $mutextrm{s}$ shaping time.
The purpose of this paper is to explore an ASIC design for estimating sizes and concentrations of airborne micro-particles by the means of integrating, amplifying and digitizing electric charge signals generated by photo-sensors as it receives scattered photons by the presence of micro-particles, consisting of a pre-amplifier that detects and amplifies voltage or current signal from photo-sensor that generates charges (hole-electron pairs) when exposed to visible rays, infrared rays, ultraviolet rays, etc. according to the intensity of rays; a shaper for shaping the amplified signal to a semi-gaussian waveform; two discriminators and binary counters for outputting digital signals by comparing the magnitude of the shaped signal with an arbitrary reference voltages. The ASIC with the proposed architecture and functional blocks in this study was designed with a 0.18um standard CMOS technology from Global Foundries and the operation and performances of the ASIC has been verified by the silicons fabricated by using the process.

In this talk, I will introduce two topics. The first topic is the polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) using graphene oxide quantum dots as emissive center. More specifically, the energy transfer mechanism as well as the origin of white electroluminescence in the PLED were investigated. The second topic is the facile synthesis of eco-friendly III-V colloidal quantum dots and their application to light emitting diodes. Polymer (organic) light emitting diodes (PLEDs) using quantum dots (QDs) as emissive materials have received much attention as promising components for next-generation displays. Despite their outstanding properties, toxic and hazardous nature of QDs is a serious impediment to their use in future eco-friendly opto-electronic device applications. Owing to the desires to develop new types of nanomaterial without health and environmental effects but with strong opto-electrical properties similar to QDs, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted great interest as promising luminophores. However, the origin of electroluminescence (EL) from GQDs incorporated PLEDs is unclear. Herein, we synthesized graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) using a modified hydrothermal deoxidization method and characterized the PLED performance using GOQDs blended poly(N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) as emissive layer. Simple device structure was used to reveal the origin of EL by excluding the contribution of and contamination from other layers. The energy transfer and interaction between the PVK host and GOQDs guest were investigated using steady-state PL, time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experiments revealed that white EL emission from the PLED originated from the hybridized GOQD-PVK complex emission with the contributions from the individual GOQDs and PVK emissions. (Sci Rep., 5, 11032, 2015). New III-V colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized using the hot-injection method and the QD-light emitting diodes (QLEDs) using these CQDs as emissive layer were demonstrated for the first time. The band gaps of the III-V CQDs were varied by varying the metal fraction and by particle size control. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) results show that the crystal states of the III-V CQDs consist of multi-phase states; multi-peak photoluminescence (PL) resulted from these multi-phase states. Inverted structured QLED shows green EL emission and a maximum luminance of ~45 cd/m2. This result shows that III-V CQDs can be a good substitute for conventional cadmium-containing CQDs in various opto-electronic applications, e.g., eco-friendly displays. (Un-published results).
A Rayleigh Lidar used for wind detection works by transmitting laser pulses to the atmosphere and receiving backscattering signals from molecules. Because of the weak backscattering signals, a lidar usually uses a high sensitivity photomultiplier as detector and photon counting technology for signal collection. The capturing of returned extremely weak backscattering signals requires the lidar to work on dark background with a long time accumulation to get high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Because of the strong solar background during the day, the SNR of lidar during daytime is much lower than that during nighttime, the altitude and accuracy of detection are also restricted greatly. Therefore this article describes an ultra-narrow bandwidth filter (UNBF) that has been developed on 354.7 nm wavelength of laser. The UNBF is used for suppressing the strong solar background that degrades the performance of Rayleigh wind lidar during daytime. The optical structure of UNBF consists of an interference filter (IF), a low resolution Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and a high resolution FPI. The parameters of each optical component of the UNBF are presented in this article. The transmission curve of the aligned UNBF is measured with a tunable laser. Contrasting the result of with-UNBF and with-IF shows that the solar background received by a Licel transient recorder decreases by 50~100 times and that the SNR with-UNBF was improved by 3 times in the altitude range (35 km to 40 km) compared to with-IF at 10:26 to 10:38 on August 29, 2018. By the SNR comparison at four different times of one day, the ratio-values are larger than 1 over the altitude range (25~50 km) in general, the results illustrate that the SNR with-UNBF is better than that with-IF for Rayleigh Lidar during daytime and they demonstrate the effective improvements of solar background restriction of UNBF.

Monochromatic x-ray CT has several advantages over conventional CT, which utilizes bremsstrahlung white x-rays from an x-ray tube. There are several methods to produce such monochromatic x-rays. The most popular one is crystal diffraction monochromatization, which has been commonly used because of the fact that the energy spread is very narrow and the energy can be changed continuously. The alternative method is the use of fluorescent x-ray, which has several advantages such as large beam size and fast energy change. We have developed a parallel-beam and a fan-beam monochromatic x-ray CT, and compared some characteristics such as accuracy of CT numbers between those systems. The fan beam monochromatic x-rays were generated by irradiating target materials by incident white x-rays from a bending magnet beam line NE5 in 6.5 GeV Accumulation Ring at Tukuba. The parallel beam monochromatic x-rays were generated by using a silicon double crystal monochromator at the bending magnet beam line BL-20BM in Spring-8. A Cadmium telluride (CdTe) 256 channel array detector with 512mm sensitive width capable of operating at room temperature was used in the photon counting mode. A cylindrical phantom containing eight concentrations of gadolinium was used for the fan beam monochromatic x-ray CT system, while a phantom containing acetone, ethanol, acrylic and water was used for the parallel monochromatic x-ray CT system. The linear attenuation coefficients obtained from CT numbers of those monochromatic x-ray CT images were compared with theoretical values. They showed a good agreement within 3%. It was found that the quantitative measurement can be possible by using the fan beam monochromatic x-ray CT system as well as a parallel beam monochromatic X-ray CT system.
Purpose: N-13 ammonia uptake and retention in the myocardium is related to perfusion and metabolism. There are several potential advantages of N-13 ammonia positron emission tomography (PET) to detect myocardial ischemia, such as higher spatial resolution, greater counting efficiencies, and robust attenuation correction. But there are few reports comparing Tc-99m myocardial perfusion single photon emission tomography (MPS) and N-13 ammonia PET. We thus compared adenosine stress N-13 ammonia PET/CT and Tc-99m sestamibi MPS in patients with suspected coronary artery stenosis. Materials and Methods: Seventeen patients (male 13 : $63{\pm}11$ years old) underwent adenosine stress N-13 ammonia PET/CT (Discovery ST, GE), Tc-99m sestamibi MPS (dual head gamma camera, Hawkeye, GE) and coronary angiography within 1 week. N-13 ammonia PET/CT and Tc-99m sestamibi MPS images were assessed with a 20-segment model by visual interpretation and quantitative analysis using automatic quantitative software (Myovation, GE). Results: Both sensitivities and specificities of detecting an individual coronary artery stenosis were higher for N-13 ammonia PET/CT than Tc-99m sestamibi MPS (PET/CT: 91%/89% vs MPS: 65%/82%). N-13 ammonia PET/CT showed reversibility in 52% of segments that were considered non-reversibile by Tc-99m sestamibi MPS. In the 110 myocardial segments supplied by the stenotic coronary artery, N-13 ammonia PET/CT showed higher count densities than Tc-99m MPS on rest study (p < 0.01), and the difference of count density between the stress and the rest studies was also larger on N-13 ammonia PET/CT. Conclusion: Adenosine stress N-13 ammonia PET/CT had higher diagnostic sensitivity and specificity, more reversibility of perfusion defects and greater stress/rest uptake differences than Tc-99m sestamibi MPS. Accordingly, N-13 ammonia PET/CT might offer better assessment of myocardial ischemia and viability.
Using the 2-D and 3-D Hoffman brain phantom, 3-D Jaszczak phantom and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography, the effects of data acquisition parameter, attenuation, noise, scatter and reconstruction algorithm on image quantitation as well as image quality were studied. For the data acquisition parameters, the images were acquired by changing the increment angle of rotation and the radius. The less increment angle of rotation resulted in superior image quality. Smaller radius from the center of rotation gave better image quality, since the resolution degraded as increasing the distance from detector to object increased. Using the flood data in Jaszczak phantom, the optimal attenuation coefficients were derived as 0.12cm$\^$-1/ for all collimators. Consequently, the all images were corrected for attenuation using the derived attenuation coefficients. It showed concave line profile without attenuation correction and flat line profile with attenuation correction in flood data obtained with jaszczak phantom. And the attenuation correction improved both image qulity and image quantitation. To study the effects of noise, the images were acquired for 1min, 2min, 5min, 10min, and 20min. The 20min image showed much better noise characteristics than 1min image indicating that increasing the counting time reduces the noise characteristics which follow the Poisson distribution. The images were also acquired using dual-energy windows, one for main photopeak and another one for scatter peak. The images were then compared with and without scatter correction. Scatter correction improved image quality so that the cold sphere and bar pattern in Jaszczak phantom were clearly visualized. Scatter correction was also applied to 3-D Hoffman brain phantom and resulted in better image quality. In conclusion, the SPECT images were significantly affected by the factors of data acquisition parameter, attenuation, noise, scatter, and reconstruction algorithm and these factors must be optimized or corrected to obtain the useful SPECT data in clinical applications.
