  • A prompt gamma-ray neutron activation (PGNA) system was simulated by the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code (MCNP-4A) to estimate the level at which the scattered photon fluence rate, the absolute efficiency of the HPGe-detector, the volume of the concrete sample and the $^{35}$ /Cl(n, ${\gamma}$) reaction rate in this sample contribute to the count rate in the NaCl concentration measurement. The n- ${\gamma}$ fluence rates at the ST-2 beam tube exit of the HANARO reactor were used as input data, and the GAMMA-X type HPGe detector was modeled to tally 1.1649 MeV ${\gamma}$ -rays emitted from the $^{35}$ Cl(n, ${\gamma}$) reaction in the concrete sample. For three cylindrical concrete samples of 13.8, 46.8 and 157.1 ㎤ volumes, respectively, the relations between the NaCl weight fractions of 0.1, 1, 2 and 5 % in each of the concrete samples and the 1.1 649 MeV pulses created in the HPGe detector model were studied. As a result, it was found that the count rate at the same NaCl concentration nearly depends on the volume of the samples in a simulated condition of the same NaCl concentration samples, and that the linearities of the NaCl concentration calibration curves were reasonable in the narrow range of the NaCl weight fraction.

  • The solid state detector system was constructed using commercially available rectifier diode for the assessment of quality assurance in radiotherapy. Dosimetry system which consists of the electrometer and the water phanton was used for measuring small field size scanning. The measured results, which had linearity in accordance with variation of radiation dose for gamma-ray of Co- 60 and 6 and 10MV photons of linear accelerator, showed quite linear characteristics within 1% error. The percent depth dose of 10MV photon of Mevatron KD linear accelerator was measured in small field size using diode, and the results were compared with that of using ion chambers. The results show that the difference of percent depth dose between the value of diode and that of ion chamber was negligible in large field size. However, in small size less than 4$\times$4cm, the difference of percent depth dose estimated by diode and ion chamber was 4.7% by extrapolation to 0$\times$0cm. Considering the smaller volume of diode than that of ion chamber, it might be more reliable to use diode for estimating percent depth dose. Above results suggest that diode can be used for routine check such as beam profile, flatness, symmetry and energy

  • In respiratory-induced proton therapy, the accuracy of tracking system and beam controlling is more important than photon therapy. Therefore, a high accuracy motion tracking system that can track internal marker and external surrogate is needed. In this research, our team has installed internal and external marker tracking system at our institution's proton therapy system, and tested the scanning with gating according to the position of marker. The results demonstrate that the developed in-house external/internal marker based gating system can be clinically used for proton therapy system for moving tumor treatment.

  • Laser driven accelerators promise to provide an alternative to conventional accelerator technology. They rely on the excitation of large amplitude density waves in a plasma by the photon pressure of an intense laser. The density oscillations in which electrons and ions are separated, result in extremely large longitudinal electric fields that can be several orders of magnitude larger than those that are used in today's radio-frequency accelerators. Whereas this principle had been demonstrated experimentally for nearly two decades, it was not until 2004 that the production of high quality electron beams around 100 MeV was demonstrated. Analysis, aided by particle-in-cell simulations, as well as experiments with various plasma lengths and densities, indicate that tailoring the length of the accelerator, together with loading of the accelerating structure with beam, are the keys to production of mono-energetic electron beams. Increasing the energy towards a GeV and beyond will require reducing the plasma density and design criteria are discussed for an optimized accelerator module. The current progress and future directions are summarized through comparison with conventional accelerators, highlighting the unique short and long term prospects for intense radiation sources and high energy accelerators based on laser-drivenplasma accelerators.

  • Purpose: The goal of this study was to develop a new index as an objective reference for evaluating current and newly developed indices used for osteoporosis screening based on dental images. Its name; IDIOS, stands for Index of Dental-imaging Indices of Osteoporosis Screening. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive PubMed search was conducted to retrieve studies on dental imaging-based indices for osteoporosis screening. The results of the eligible studies, along with other relevant criteria, were used to develop IDIOS, which has scores ranging from 0 (0%) to 15 (100%). The indices presented in the studies we included were then evaluated using IDIOS. Results: The 104 studies that were included utilized 24, 4, and 9 indices derived from panoramic, periapical, and computed tomographic/cone-beam computed tomographic techniques, respectively. The IDIOS scores for these indices ranged from 0 (0%) to 11.75 (78.32%). Conclusion: IDIOS is a valuable reference index that facilitates the evaluation of other dental imaging-based osteoporosis screening indices. Furthermore, IDIOS can be utilized to evaluate the accuracy of newly developed indices.

  • The search for high-density recording materials has been one of most active and vigorous field in the field of magnetism. $FePt-L1_{0}$ nanoparticle has emerged as a potential candidate because of its high anisotropy. In this paper, we provide an overview of recent work at Argonne National Laboratory that contributes to the ongoing dialogue concerning the relation between structure and properties of the FePt nanoparticle system. In particular we discuss the ability to control structure and properties via dosing with Cr. Cr-dosed FePt films were grown via molecular beam epitaxy and annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber, and were studied with the surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (SMOKE), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). We found that small dosage of Cr helps to generate $L1_{0}$ phase FePt magnetic nanoparticles with small size, defined shape and regular spatial distribution on MgO (001) substrate. The nanostructures are ferromagnetic with high magnetic coercivity (${\sim}0.9T$) and magnetic easy axis in the desired out-of-plane orientation. We also show that controlling the lateral region where nanostructures exist is possible via artificial patterning with Cr.

  • The dosimetric properties of Ge- and Er-doped optical fibres are studied. The Ge-doped fibre is found to be more sensitive to radiation and there is little fading of TL signal compared with Er-doped fibre. The Ge- and Er-doped fibres showed a linear response over a range of ${\sim}1\;Gy$ to about 120 Gy and ${\sim}1Gy$ to about 250Gy respectively. The Ge-doped fibre is found to be dose-rate independent both for photons and electron beams of energy ranging from 6 to 10 MeV and 6 to 12 MeV respectively. The fibre is energy independent for energy greater than ${\sim}0.1\;MeV$ for photon or 0.1 MeV for electron beam. From the depth-dose measurement, it was found that the position of maximum dose, dmax, increased with increasing energy ranging from ${\sim}2\;cm$ and ${\sim}2.5\;cm$ for 6 MeV and 10 MeV photons respectively. The central axis percentage depth dose at 10 cm depth was found to be in good agreement with the value obtained using ionization chamber.

  • This paper evaluated the amount of radiation generated by wedge filters during radiation therapy using a high-energy linear accelerator, and the dose to the worker during wedge replacement. After 10-MV photon beam was irradiated with wedge filter, the wedge was removed from the linear accelerator, and the dose rate and energy spectrum were measured. The initial measurement was approximately 1 uSv/h, and the radiation level was reduced to 0.3 uSv/h after 6 min. The effective half-life derived from the dose rate measurement was approximately 3.5 min, and the influence of AI-28 was about 53%. From the energy spectrum measurements, a peak of 1,799 keV was measured for AI-28, while the peak for Co-58 was not measured in the control room. The peaks for Au-106 and Cd-105 were found only measurement was done without wedge removement from the linear accelerator. The additional doses received by the radiation worker during wedge replacement were estimated to be 0.08-0.4 mSv per year.

  • Quantifying the solute composition of a cloud droplet (or a whole droplet) is an important task for understanding formation processes and heating/cooling rates. In this study, a combination of droplet fixation and SR-XRF microprobe analysis was used to visualize and quantify elements in a micro-scale droplet. In this study, we report the preliminary outcome of this experiment. A spherical micro-scale droplet was successfully solidified through exposure to ${\alpha}$-cyano-acrylate vapor without affecting its size or shape. An X-ray microprobe system equipped at the beam line 37XU of Super Photon ring 8 GeV (SPring-8) was applied to visualize and quantify the elemental composition in an individual micro-scale droplet. It was possible to reconstruct 2D elemental maps for the K and Cl contained in a microdroplet that was dispensed from the 10-ppm KCl standard solution. Multi-elemental peaks corresponding to X-ray energy were also successfully resolved. Further experiments to determine quantitative measures of elemental mass in individual droplets and high-resolution X-ray microtomography (i.e., 3D elemental distribution) are planned for the future.

  • We are developing a sensitive gamma ray spectrometer based on superconducting transition edge sensors. The detector consists of a small piece of high purity Sn as an absorber and a Ti/Au bilayer as a temperature sensor. It is designed to measure the thermal signal caused by absorption of gamma rays. The mechanical support and the thermal contact between the absorber and the thermometer were made with Stycast epoxy. The bilayer was formed by e-beam evaporation and patterned by wet etching on top of a $SiN_X$ membrane. A sharp superconducting transition of the film was measured near 100 mK. When the film was biased to the edge of the transition, signals were observed due to single photon absorption emitted from an $^{241}Am$ source. The measured spectrum showed several characteristic peaks of the source including 59.5 keV gamma line. The full with at half maximum was about 900 eV for the 59.5 keV gamma line. The background was low enough to resolve low energy lines. Considerations to improve the energy resolution of the gamma ray spectrometer are also discussed.
